In this thesis we study mean field interacting particle systems and their McKean-Vlasov limiting processes, in particular we focus on three different interaction mechanisms, mainly emerging from biological modelling. The first type of interaction is given by the so called simultaneous jumps. We consider a system of interacting jump-diffusion processes that interact by means of the discontinuous component: each particle performs a main jump and it simultaneously induces in all the other particles a simultaneous jump whose amplitude is rescaled with the size of the system. The effect of door and window openings on long timber framed shear walls was the subject of this thesis. Four different wall configurations containing various openings and one control wall with no openings were tested to examine ultimate load capacity and stiffness. All walls were forty feet in length and contained tie-down anchorage at the extreme ends of the wall only. Two replications of the five wall configurations were built. Each of the five wall configurations was tested using a: 1) monotonic displacement pattern and 2) sequential phased displacement pattern. A better understanding

Thesis (PhD (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis undertakes a comparative examination of South African and Kenyan auto/biographical narratives of crime and imprisonment. Although some attention is paid to narratives of political imprisonment, the study focuses primarily on autobiographical accounts by criminals, confessional narratives, popular fiction about crime and prison experience, and journalistic accounts of prison life. There is very little critical work at this moment that refers to these forms of prison writing in South Africa and Kenya. Popu

Poor urban learners' long walks to school and the influence on their school activities. My study is about poor urban learners who walk long distances to school. I explore how their school trip affects their participation in school activities - co-curricular and extra curricula activities, and their understandings about the educational implications. The purpose of this study is two-fold: to understand poor urban learners' school trips through their own voices; and to reflect on the school management implications of the findings. The focus of the study is the Ecotourist Spectrum devised by Weaver and Lawton in 2001. The Spectrum was the first to suggest that ecotourists display a range of hard to soft characteristics and has become an accepted part of the literature on ecotourism. Yet, a detailed examination of the literature found that this behaviour-based Spectrum produced only a limited distinction between ecotourists, while other studies suggested the potential to incorporate values into the Spectrum to provide a more detailed segmentation of ecotourists (Blamey & Braithwaite, 1997, Zografos & Allcroft, 2007). The study area extends from west of the Great Divide to the Broken Hill and Tibooburra regions of far western New South Wales, encompassing several important mining districts that not only include the famous Broken Hill lodes (Pb-Zn-Ag), but also Parkes (Cu-Au), Peak Hill (Au), Cobar (Cu-Au-Zn) and White Cliffs (opal). The area is generally semi-arid to arid undulating to flat terrain covered by sparse vegetation. ¶ During the Cretaceous, an extensive sea retreated across vast plains, with rivers draining from the south and east. The first result, we discuss the asymptotic behavior of the gyration radius of order r where 0 < r < α and α > 2. Furthermore we obtain the main coefficient as fixed one xj-axis direction for j = 1, 2, ..., d. The second result, we discuss the recurrence or transient for the long-range random walk with α > 0 and dimension d > 0. The proof is basi

Since the publication of the seminal work by Lakoff and Johnson (1980a), Metaphors we live by, countless research has been done on metaphor. This research was conducted because, in the past, metaphor was considered a deviant and poetic device that could be used only by those who were skilful. These scholars offered another view: metaphor is a matter of thought. They showed that linguistic metaphor is the manifestation of conceptual metaphors that are in our subconscious mind and are found in every day language. In other words, metaphors are a revelation of how we think. Linguists and translati
