Abstract:
Cu2+ contaminated areas pose serious health risk for the living organisms. In this study, the biosorption of Cu2+ by Pseudomonas putida immobilized on loofa sponge (Luffa cylindrica L.) was investigated. Effects of the particle size of loofa sponge, initial pH, temperature, initial Cu2+ concentration and the stirring speed on the adsorption of Cu2+ were examined. Optimum conditions were determined as follows: loofa sponge particle size is 0.42 - 0.85 mm, initial pH is 5.0, temperature is 30 °C, initial Cu2+ concentration is 25 mg/l, and stirring speed is 130 rpm. According to the results of kinetic calculations, Qmax and ro values were determined as 0.394 mg/g and 0.077 mg/g.min for P. putida immobilized on loofa sponge, respectively, while they were found to be 0.096 mg/g and 0.052 mg/g.min for the loofa sponge only. It is thought that Cu2+ can be removed effectively from the wastewaters by using P. putida immobilized on loofa sponge.

Abstract:
Resource technology for food waste has become the research hot recently. To perform ethanol fermentation from food waste could realize energy recovery and pollution prevention. This study investigated the effects of two kinds of immobilization carriers, loofa sponge and fiber ball on ethanol fermentation from food waste. The seven runs of fermentation experiments demonstrated that the fermentation broth with fiber ball showed an increase of residue sugar concentration (31.98g/l) and a decrease of sugar utilization ratio (60.02%) in the fourth run. When it came to the seventh run of experiment, the sugar utilization ratio was only 49.04%, which showed that the fermentation yield by the yeast decreased significantly. While the fermentation by loofa sponge revealed stable fermentation efficiency, the sugar utilization ratio were all above 80%. The effect of size and inoculum for loofa sponge showed that 3 gram dry loofa sponge in 100 ml saccharification liquid was suitable. While the size had little effect on the fermentation.

High fidelity calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite (bio) inorganic replicas of the fibrous network of the dried fruit of Luffa cylindrica are described, utilizing a facile synthetic route. The loofa sponge is a highly complex macroscopic architectural template, an inexpensive and sustainable resource. In the context of the morphosynthesis, the capability of replication of the loofa sponge opens the possibility of the use of biodiversity in obtaining new materials. We would like to emphasize that the template proposed in this paper, makes possible the preparation of inorganic replicas with a very desirable size, on the centimeter scale. This fact is innovative with respect to inorganic replicas described in the literature, which predominate at the micrometric scale, limited to the original size of the template.

Abstract The vegetable sponge of Luffa cylindrica was studied as a matrix for the immobilization of Aspergillus niger 26. p roducer of polymethylgalacturonase (PMG). Entrapped spores could grow and multiply within the lattice of the sponge. The influence of loofa sponge inoculum content, initial spore inoculum content, and du ration of the growth cycle on the enzyme activity and mycelium growth was studied. The best yield of PMG was reach ed with 1 piece of loofa sponge (approx. 0.10 g dry weight), 109 spores per g carrier and 48 h duration of one cycle. Data obtained during long-term semicontinuous cultivation showed that production capacity increased significantly and the production period was extended more than 10 times compared with the free cell culture.

Abstract:
For building a sustainable fermentation process, it is essential to reduce dependence on natural resources and lower the amount of pollution that is created. The reuse of agro-industrial wastewater after possible treatment leads to the achievement of these goals concurrently. This study investigates the production of citric acid and the cellulase enzyme by A. niger cultivated in olive mill wastewater (OMW) using a loofa sponge-packed column bioreactor. The process was conducted under batch conditions using a single-stage packed bioreactor and under continuous operation using two-stage packed-column bioreactors. Citric acid and cellulase enzyme production were enhanced when the culture was supplied with cellulose. Employing loofa sponge slices for cell entrapment/immobilization improved the efficiency of the process. The maximum citric acid concentration achieved was 16 g/L with a yield (YCit.A/BOD) of 38.5% and a productivity of 2.5 g/L/day. When the process parameters were translated into continuous operation employing two loofa sponge-packed column bioreactors, citric acid production was improved significantly to 25 g/L in a steady-state period of 5 days at a production rate of 3.6 g/L/day and an allover yield (YCit.A/BOD) of 57.5%. Cellulases and reducing sugars were continuously supplied to the second-stage bioreactor by the first-stage bioreactor, which in turn enhanced fungal growth and citric acid production.

Abstract:
Abstract Four Hirschmanniella species are known to occur in Europe: H. gracilis, H. loofi, H. behningi and H. zostericola; a fifth species, H. halophila sp. n., is described from Germany, where it was found along the Elbe estuary and on the adjoining coast of the North Sea. Three other species reported for Europe are considered as species inquirendae or appear to be misidentified. Based on sampling material from Germany, detailed morphological descriptions of H. gracilis, H. loofi and H. behningi are given; H. zostericola has not been found since its first description. The variability, even of characters of diagnostic significance, may be enormous, which makes correct identification difficult if little material is available. Hirschmanniella halophila sp. n. is morphologically very close to H. caudacrena, which has been isolated several times from aquarium plants imported from East Asia to Germany and for which morphological details are given. In Germany, H. gracilis is the most common species and is widely distributed; it is also known from many other European countries. Hirschmanniella loofi (also known from The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Italy) is less common. Hirschmanniella behningi, previously reported only from Russia and Sweden, was identified from nine places in Germany, including several coastal sites. Most of the Hirschmanniella records refer to moist soils with reed and other grasses or sedges; only H. gracilis was found exceptionally in arable soil. At many sampling sites, two or even three Hirschmanniella species co-occurred. A table for distinguishing the five European species is presented.

Abstract:
Soil samples were collected from the rhizosphere of mulberry (Morus alba L.) trees, in a 1,000 m² plot, at the Experimental Farm Santa Lucia, in Barva, Heredia, Costa Rica, in August 2013. The plants showed symptoms of yellowing, declining and poor development. Specimens of two ring nematode were collected from the soil and identified as Mesocriconema sphaerocephalum (Taylor 1936) Loof 1989 and M. anastomoides (Maqbool & Shahina 1985) Loof & De Grisse 1989, based on the morphological and morphometrical analysis of females. Both nematodes have been previously found in Costa Rica. However, this is the first report of nematodes from the Criconematidae family associated to mulberry trees and it provides additional information on the distribution of this phytoparasite.

Abstract:
The formation of magnetic order in solids is a complex and subtle issue. There are a wide range of different types of magnetisation, all of which may be favoured under different circumstances. In this thesis we consider a novel combination of ideas where the formation of spatially modulated magnetisation is linked to a metamagnetic transition. In this we are inspired by a general principle of modulated phases intervening as intermediate states in phase transitions. In particular we draw analogies with the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of spatially modulated superconductivity. We study a mean-field theory for itinerant magnetism where the crystal lattice drives the formation of a rich phase diagram. A peak in the electronic density of states due to a van Hove singularity creates ferromagnetism and a metamagnetic transition. Furthermore we find that a modulated magnetic phase - a spin-spiral, becomes favoured along the metamagnetic transition line. The appearance of this phase causes the metamagnetic transition to bifurcate to enclose the modulated region. The topology of this reconstructed phase diagram shows remarkable similarity to that observed in experiments on Sr₃Ru₂O₇. This material shows a metamagnetic transition which can be tuned by field angle towards zero temperature. Before this point is reached a new phase with high and anisotropic resistivity appears. We believe that this anomalous phase can be explained by the formation of a phase of modulated magnetisation caused by a peak in the electronic density of states. This mechanism may also apply in a range of other materials as it is driven by rather generic features of the bandstructure.

Freamat, Mario Vadim. "NORMAL AND SPIN POLARIZED TRANSPORT IN HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTOR TUNNELING JUNCTIONS." UKnowledge, 2004. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/426.

Abstract:
One of the challenges facing condensed matter physics nowadays is to understand the electronic structure of high temperature superconductors. This dissertation compiles our contribution to the experimental information concerning this subject. Tunneling conductance spectroscopy a technique capable of probing the electronic density of states in hybrid structures was used to study the current and spin transport properties across junctions between metallic counterelectrodes and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8- (BSCCO) crystals. Since in these structures the transport is mediated by transmission channels depending on superconductive characteristics, the energy resolved density of states is a signature of the mechanism of superconductivity. For instance, one can observe the superconductive energy gap and the behavior of subgap bound states due to phase sensitive Andreev reflections at the junction interface. In particular, tunneling spectroscopy makes possible the observation of the LOFF state characterized by the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism. Cuprates like BSCCO are highly anisotropic materials and their superconductivity is almost two dimensional, being confined in the CuO2 planes. Therefore, our junctions combine monocrystals of underdoped samples of BSCCO with various thin film counterelectrodes normal metal (Ag), conventional superconductor (Pb) and ferromagnetic metal (Fe) deposited perpendicular onto the cuprate ab-plane (CuO2 plane). We performed measurements on Ag/BSCCO junctions for two current injection directions into the same crystal. We observed that, near the 110 crystal surface, the conductance spectra show a high zero bias peak (ZBCP) which is a manifestation of zero energy Andreev bound states due to an anisotropic superconductive order parameter. Near the 100 surface, the ZBCP is largely suppressed. This is consistent with a predominantly 2 2 x y d - -wave pairing symmetry. In some cases, the ZBCP splits or decreases in amplitude at low temperatures. This is consistent with the existence of a subdominant s-wave (or xy d ) resulting in a mixed d is + state which breaks time reversal symmetry (BTRS). Since we observe this phenomenon in the underdoped case, we do not confirm the possibility of a quantum critical point close to the optimal doping. Our Pb/BSCCO spectra contradict the theory explaining the BTRS by proximity effect. The Fe/BSCCO junctions measure the effect of spin polarization. We explain the recorded 4-peak asymmetric structure by the combined effect of a spin independent BTRS state and a spin filtering exchange energy in the barrier responsible for a large ZBCP splitting. The LOFF state was observed in the proximity region induced on the ferromagnetic side of multilayered-Fe/Ag/BSCCO structures. As expected for the LOFF order parameter, the spectra develops coherent damped oscillations with the Fe layer thickness probing different regions. The magnitude and sign of the oscillation depends on the energy. The conductances at energy zero or equal to the superconductive gap are modulated in antiphase proving that the order parameters takes successively positive and negative values. Changing the junction orientation with 4 p , results in an opposite behavior for the same distance. The maximal amplitudes in one direction is replaced by minima, showing that, besides space, the LOFF state modulation depends on the phase of the high temperature order parameter inducing the proximity

Abstract:
Fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) technology combines the robust coated particle fuel of high-temperature, gas-cooled reactors with the single phase, high volumetric heat capacity coolant of molten salt reactors and the low-pressure pool-type reactor configuration of sodium fast reactors. This paper discusses one key technology area required to further define and develop the FHR: the thermal hydraulic performance of the core, primary system and second loop. Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) is leading the China Academy of Science (CAS) FHR program. A TMSR-SF1 reactor with a fluoride cooled pebble bed design has been suggested by SINAP, and the design is currently in progress. For this preliminary thermal hydraulic assessment, a TMSR-SF1 system model was developed using RELAP5. The RELAP5 model was used to help define and size systems such as the intermediate coolant salt selecting. A loss of flow transient was also simulated to evaluate the performance of the reactor during an anticipated transient event. A steady-state calculation was carried out and the calculated initial conditions show the influence of different salt. The loss of forced flow (LOFF) transient simulation results show that the passive residual heat removal system can effectively remove all decay heat from the primary loop under this extreme accident scenario. Some initial recommendations for modifying system component designs, such as heat exchanger with different salt and install place of pump, are also discussed.
