Full textMalaria is a curable, preventable disease which has been around for millennia. Unfortunately, in this time of unprecedented growth and resources, the world has yet to prevent malaria from continuing its vicious cycle, taking the life of a child every thirty seconds. This project is an interdisciplinary creative writing exploration of the underlying biological, sociological, and theological reasons for this failure to eradicate an avoidable illness. Aside from the biological difficulties involved in creating vaccines for the complex strains of the malaria parasite, the deeper cause of malaria's persistence within the bloodstream of humanity is the narcissism to which all people are prone, especially when self-interest is upheld as the highest virtue of Western capitalistic society. Literature, sociology, and theology, among other fields, each point to the answer of humility and love as solutions to the global problem caused by the fact that, ultimately, there is something far worse than malaria plaguing everyone from within

Full textThe growing number of studies carried out in recent years has shown that bioacoustics is particularly interesting for the monitoring of secretive species. The emergence of autonomous recording devices, combined with new methods of analysis, have recently contributed to the increase of studies in this field. Over the last 30 years, many bioacoustic studies have been developed for the Grey wolf (Canis lupus), a secretive large carnivore known for its howls spreading over distances up to several kilometers. These researches notably aimed to improve its monitoring, which is complex because of the strong wolf dispersal capacities over long distances, the large extent of their territories and the various natural contexts in which they live. In this context, this PhD thesis was organized around three research axes. The first two axes focused on the contribution of passive bioacoustics for the Grey wolf monitoring in the field. By combining acoustic, statistical and cartographic analysis, the first objective was to develop a spatial sampling method adapted to large study areas for the detection of wolf howls by using autonomous recorders. Then, the same protocol was used to investigate the possibility to localize wolves thanks to their howls. Field experimentations, conducted in mid-mountain (Massif des Vosges) and lowland (Côtes de Meuse) environments, in two study areas of 30 km² and with an array of 20 autonomous recorders, demonstrated the high potential of passive bioacoustics for the Grey wolf monitoring. Indeed, nearly 70% of broadcasts (synthetic sound with similar acoustic properties to howls) were detected by at least one autonomous recorder in mid-mountain environment and more than 80% in lowland environment, for sound source-recorders distances of up to 2.7 km and 3.5 km respectively. By using statistical model and Geographic Information System, the detection probability of wolf howls was modeled in both study areas. In the mid-mountain environment, this detection probability was high or very high (greater than 0.5) in 5.72 km² of the study area, compared with 21.43 km² in lowland environment. The broadcast sites were localized with an overall mean accuracy of 315 ± 617 (SD) m, reducing until 167 ± 308 (SD) m after setting a temporal error threshold defined from the data distribution. The third axe focused on the application of acoustic diversity indices to estimate the number of howling wolves in choruses and thus to contribute to pack size monitoring. Index values of the six indices (H, Ht, Hf, AR, M, and ACI) were positively correlated with the number of howling wolves in the artificial tested choruses. Interesting size predictions based on real choruses were obtained with one of the indices (ACI). The effects of several biases on the reference values for the acoustic indices were then explored, showing that three of them were relatively insensitive (Hf, AR and, ACI). Finally, results obtained with autonomous recorders confirm the real potential of passive acoustic methods for detecting the presence of wolves but also for localizing individuals with high precision, in contrasting natural environments, at large spatial and temporal scales. The use of acoustic diversity indices also opens new perspectives for estimating pack sizes. All of the promising methods emerging from this thesis require now further investigations before considering a concrete application for monitoring the Grey wolf in its natural environment

Full textThe aim of this study was intensification ofhydrodynamic and mass transfer properties ofexternal-loop airlift reactor by means of self-agitatedimpellers mounted in the riser section. The influenceof impellers’ insertion on the main hydrodynamicand mass transfer characteristics was investigated forvarious liquid phases and sparger types. The valuesof riser gas holdup, downcomer liquid velocity andvolumetric mass transfer coefficient obtained inconfigurations with and without impellers werecompared. Results showed that the installment of self-agitatedimpellers led to a significant bubble breakage anddecrease of bubble size, especially in viscouscarboxymethylcellulose solutions. The efficiency ofself-agitated impellers was immensely influenced bysuperficial gas velocity, liquid phase, and distributortype. Obtained riser gas holdup values were up to47% higher in the configuration with impellers, incomparison to the configuration wthout impellers.Despite the fact that self-agitated impellersrepresented an obstacle to liquid flow, relatively lowreduction of downcomer liquid velocity was attained(about 10%). Furthermore, the insertion of impellersinduced up to 82% higher values of volumetric masstransfer coefficient at lower superficial gas velocities. At higher superficial gas velocities, i.e. conditionsmainly operated in various fermentation processes, about 20-30% higher values of volumetric masstransfer coefficient were achieved with impellers. In addition to empirical correlations, artificial neuralnetwork models were sucessfully developed topredict riser gas holdup, downcomer liquid velocityand volumetric mass transfer coefficient in bothexternal-loop airlift configurations.

Full textThis thesis explores the relationship between Electronic Dance Music (EDM) which originated in clubs, and the mass media consolidated music video. Focussing on how EDM influences the music video, an aesthetic paradigm shift on the latter is discussed. This change stemmed mainly from the structure of the instrumental, modular EDM track, which is significantly different from the structure of the song. Originally, the music video was intended as way of visualising the performance of the artist on the monitor; however, the advent of instrumental EDM tracks posed critical problems for this approach, and arguably renders it obsolete. New strategies of illustrations are required. Parts I and II of this thesis analyse music video and EDM through scientific discourses in an attempt to define their respective aesthetic attributes. In part III the relationship between tracks and images in club visuals is discussed in order to illustrate the singularity of this dialogue. In part IV, conclusions from the foregoing sections are evaluated and applied to a study of “Windowlicker” by British artist Aphex Twin, the video to which was directed by Chris Cunningham in 1999. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the aesthetic studies of the music video to clarify its status as an essential part of popular music in monitor culture. As an artistic genre it has to be taken seriously because it can display contemporary avant-gardes.

Tang Dynasty, under the reign of Emperor Taizong, enjoyed great prosperity in many aspects. “Zhen Guan Zheng Yao” is a set of political records complied by historian Wu Jing on the dialogues among Emperor Taizong and his chancellors. These records are considered by many as exemplary studying material of leadership. The wisdom that can be garnered from “Zhen Guan Zheng Yao” can even be applied to administrative leadership in education nowadays. 21stcentury education is complex and complicated; school principals have to lead their teams through various problems and challenges. A successful principal should be able to adapt ancient wisdom in his or her conduct, face problems with a positive attitude, and find the best solution. The contents of “Zhen Guan Zheng Yao” can be categorized in four sections:“accepting critique and opinions”, “appointing worthies and be fair”, “be respectful and modest”, and“repenting errors and be respectful of teachers”. A successful principal should be affirmative in his or her guidance, and be able to cultivate the greatest potential in his or her team, thereby earning the acceptance of his or her staff. As suggested by “Zhen Guan Zheng Yao”, principals should shape a vision of success for the school, motivate staff and teachers to work toward achieving that vision, and be charismatic, inspiring, and supporting. Zhen Guan Zheng Yao can offer strategic solutions for principals facing leadership difficulties. Nip the problem in the bud is a perfect example. Before setting a policy into motion, a successful principal should be attentive to the thoughts and feelings of the teachers, thus can he or she straighten out the problems and gain the acceptance of the teachers. “Confucian Analects”, “The Romance of Three Kingdoms”, “The Dream of the Red Chamber”, “Zhen Guan Zheng Yao”, and “The Altar Sutra of Sixth Patriarch” are Chinese classics that can offer insight and inspiration of leadership to school principals. Only by always learning, self-reflecting, and repenting one’s attitude on critique and differences in opinions, can true leadership be achieved. Among the principals interviewed, most agreed that a successful leader should be openminded about learning new things, reflecting one’s conduct, and be able to make the best decision after listening to the various suggestions and critique from teachers, parents, and society. Successful leadership is more than just listening to all the different perspectives, it also includes conveying the differences to all parties involved, and bringing them together for a win-win situation.

Full textII. Evidence based evaluation of the efficacy of Chinese medicine . The public's increasing use of Chinese medicine has added urgency to the need of examining the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine practice and product. In order to understand the efficacy of Chinese medicine and the feasibility of standard research methodology of evidence-based medicine, two clinical trials were conducted in 100 healthy subjects and 82 breast cancer patients using the preparation contains YunZhi (Coriolus versicolor ) and Danshen (Radix Salviae miltorrhizae). The findings showed that the YunZhi and Danshen compound significantly enhanced the quality of life in healthy and some breast cancer subjects with reference to physical, emotional and health transitions.
III. Role of Chinese medicine in our health care system. Chinese medicine has been used for more than 3000 years in China and there have been numerous reports of efficacy. Chinese medicine would be offering solutions to some medical condition, where modern medicine yet failed to provide effective solution. Examples included chronic diseases, viral infections, allergies, derangements, cancers, etc. The health care system could provide the public alternative choices of medical treatment related to Chinese medicine as valuable supplements to modern medicine. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
The use of alternative medicine has become increasingly popular around the world, mainly because of growing interest in holistic medicine and natural methods of healing. The Public is becoming increasingly aware of the limits of Modern medicine, and is looking forward to the possible benefits of alternative medicine. Because of the lack of perfect confidence on Modern medicine due to the unclear role of health promotion and unsatisfactory outcome of chronic diseases, people turn to alternative medicine. In Hong Kong, alternative medicine in reality, means very much Chinese medicine. A better understanding of the prevalence of Chinese medicine is needed in order to determine what needs to be done to improve the safety and efficacy of Chinese medicine with regard to its service role in the Health Care System. This thesis is structured to assess the popularity and peoples' attitude of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong; to assess the validity of evidence-based approach in the evaluation of the efficacy of Chinese medicine; and to explore the role of Chinese medicine in health care in the Health Care System.

"The effect of scleraxis-transduced tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs) on tendon repair in a rat model." 2013. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b5549324.
TDSC-Scx可能促進肌腱損傷的早期修復。
We hypothesized that transduction of tendon-derived stem cell (TDSC) with scleraxis (Scx) might promote its tenogenic differentiation and promote better tendon repair compared to TDSC without Scx transduction. This study thus aimed to investigate the effect of Scx transduction on the tenogenic differentiation of TDSC and the effect of the resulting cell line in the promotion of tendon repair.
TDSCs were transduced with lentivirus-mediated Scx or empty vector and selected by blasticidin. The mRNA and protein expression of Scx were checked by qRT-PCR and Immuno fluorescence, respectively. The expression of different lineage markers were examined by qRT-PCR. A rat patellar tendon window injury model was used. The operated rats were divided into 3 groups: (1) scaffold-only group, (2) TDSC-Mock group and (3) TDSC-Scx group. At week 2, 4 and 8 post-transplantation, the repaired patellar tendon was harvested for ex vivo fluorescent imaging, vivaCT imaging, histology, or biomechanical test.
TDSC-Scx consistently showed higher expression of tendon-related markers compared to TDSC-Mock. However, the effect of Scx transduction on the expression of chondro-osteogenic markers was less conclusive. The transplanted TDSCs could be detected in the window wound at week 2 but not at week 4. Ectopic ossification was detected in some samples at week 8 but there was no difference among different groups. The TDSC-Scx group promoted early tendon repair histologically and biomechanically compared to the scaffold-only group and the TDSC-Mock group.
TDSC-Scx might be used for the promotion of early tendon repair.

"A 1.5 V, 2.4 GHz monolithic CMOS sub-integer-N frequency synthesizer for WLAN application." Thesis, 2011. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6075113.
Full textTo demonstrate the feasibility of the two proposed coupling methodologies, two subinteger-N PLLs with different fractional frequency dividers have been fabricated in a 0.35 11m standard CMOS process. In design 1, the dual divide-by-4 ILFD in the fractional frequency divider is implemented with the cross-coupling scheme while the coherent-coupling scheme is used in design 2. The measured spurious tones of both designs are under -64 dBc and their measured phase noise at 1 MHz frequency offset is less than -115 dBc/Hz. The two proposed frequency synthesizers settle at approximately 32 us and their phase mismatches of the quadrature outputs are better than 38 dB (characterized by image rejection ratio). Moreover, both designs individually occupy a chip area as small as 0.70 mm2. At a supply of 1.5 V, the total power consumption for each design is below 24.1 mW.
Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are being extensively deployed since their introduction in the late 1990s. Low cost, high performance frequency synthesizers are indispensable in WLAN telecommunication systems. Meanwhile, integer-N phase-locked loop (PLL) architecture is commonly chosen due to its low circuit complexity and clean output spectrum with few spurs. However, designers have to face the tradeoffs between frequency resolution, phase noise performance and switching time. To solve the above dilemma, fractional-N PLL architecture is proposed, but fractional spurs emerge in the output spectrum, degrading the spectrum purity. Sub-integer-N PLL is thus a compromise between the integer-N and fractional-N PLL. Its structure is same as that of the integer-N while fractional division is achieved by a fractional frequency divider that is not relied on time-varying modulus control as in the fractional-N PLL.
