Abstract:
Accurate measures of animal population densities are essential to evaluate conservation status and implement action plans to ensure species survival. Gorilla numbers were assessed using the recce survey method within Moukalaba-Doudou National Park (MDNP) in Gabon using fresh nest counts of up to 1 week old. We walked 3,592 km within a 23.01-km2 study site totalling a sampling effort of 297 days. Encounter rate was 0.12 fresh nests per kilometre, and gorilla density estimates generated by home range sizes (by minimal convex polygon) ranged between 1.14 and 1.48 gorillas/km2. Gorillas preferred mixed forest for nesting over other habitats (Cheason index value 1.31). Results showed that gorilla density values within the study area concurred with previous studies that used line transect methodologies. We conclude that the choice of sampling design is dependent on environmental conditions characterised by each habitat type and target species.

Engo, Jean Marc Mezui. "Economic valuation of protected areas : the case of the Lope National Park in Gabon." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80780.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2010.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the economic value of the Lopé National Park in Gabon. The creation of the Lopé National Park (LNP) in 2002 aimed at answering international engagements of Gabon as regards conservation of the biodiversity. To be able to value this protected area, an economic valuation technique called the Total Economic Value was applied. Total economic value (TEV) is a valuation method which attempts to estimate monetarily some tangible and intangible environmental benefits. After a brief presentation and an overview of legal aspects of the LNP, two management scenarios were considered: a scenario „with the Lopé National Park‟ and a scenario „without the Lopé National Park‟. The former scenario takes in account the establishment of the park whereas the latter suggests the non-establishment of the park. A set of hypotheses was set to perform the valuation. Furthermore, the data used in this study was based on primary research and various telephone interviews to confirm their validity. Based on various valuation techniques, selected tangible and intangible ecosystem benefits classified as direct use values, indirect use values, option values and existence values were quantified. The result of this study shows that the economic value of the scenario with the Lopé National Park produces a higher economic value than the scenario without the Lopé National Park. In other words, the decision to establish a protected area is a justifiably sound economic decision as it creates social welfare at local, national and international level. It is important to note that this valuation exercise is incomplete as this study does not take into account all the environmental benefits generated by any forest ecosystem due to the difficulty in valuing its intangible nature.

Fairet, Emilie Maguy Melanie. "Vulnerability to crop-raiding : an interdisciplinary investigation in Loango National Park, Gabon." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6399/.

Abstract:
Human-wildlife conflict is a major threat to long-term wildlife survival and to subsistence communities’ livelihoods in developing countries, particularly near protected areas. In this thesis, I use an interdisciplinary approach based on a threefold vulnerability framework to examine the specific issue of crop-raiding in Loango National Park, Gabon. First, I investigate the context of conservation at the study site, and how this limits, or intensifies, conflict over wildlife. People in Loango have an understanding of sustainability that shares common ground with modern conservation principles. However, local people resent and resist current conservation practices, which exclude local communities, threaten local environmental entitlement and thus exacerbate institutional vulnerability to crop-raiding. Next, I examine biophysical vulnerability to crop-raiding and find that elephants cause the most crop damage in Loango. Crop-raiding by elephants, when considered at the scale of the study site, follows a seasonal pattern which probably results from elephants’ use of water points. However, field isolation and surrounding forest types render some fields more vulnerable than others. Farmers use diverse deterrent methods to limit raids, but none seem effective. The lack of efficacy of deterrents stems from lack of access to labour, driven by rural exodus, which prevents their successful implementation. State mitigation strategies exist but are inadequate and ineffective. Demographic changes also make farmers increasingly vulnerable to poverty, which ultimately increases social vulnerability to crop-raiding. The consequences of crop-raiding, which span from increased food and economic insecurity to social marginalisation, create a negative spiral of vulnerability to poverty and to crop-raiding. Ultimately, spatial and social isolation are the main factors driving vulnerability to crop-raiding in Loango, and both need to be addressed. Vulnerability proves to be a very appropriate analytical framework for the holistic investigation of crop-raiding, and I recommend its use in future research on human-wildlife conflicts and in conservation.

Thesis, Strasbourg, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014STRAG032/document.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the management policies of the Park National in Gabon, and particularly those of the Cristal Mounts. It tries to understand, from an anthropological point of view, the processes of sidelining of the autochtonous populations of the natural environment in which they stock up with natural resources. The main concept which guides this thesis is the one of the "feudal management". Environmental policies, the objective of which is the long-lasting preservation of the Gabonese ecosystems turn into "marginalizing" and produce "perverse effects". Among these, the change of the social status of people living in the periphery of the park of Cristal Mounts, passing from "native" to "poacher". The legislation in force relative to the environmental protection upsets and transforms the lifestyle of the autochtonous populations. In reaction to these politics and in the absence of compensatory social measures, these populations join processes of resistance, always doubling ingenuity, next to the "migrant populations ", to take the resources of the park and protect their mode life. It is thus in modalities of permanent conflicts that get organized reports between the institutional actor, the autochtonous populations and the migrant populations

Abstract:
Since nature conservation has become an issue of global concern, efforts have been made to encourage the creation of protected areas since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, especially in forest basins countries. After Rio, sustainable development has become crucial. In order to make its contribution to this international cause and at the same time diversify its economy, Gabon, country of the Congo Basin forest, created thirteen national parks in 2002. Altogether, the 13 protected sites represent 11 % of the national territory classified for the conservation of Gabon's rich biodiversity. Our study is based on the analysis of this challenge, more precisely in the Loango National Park and in a country whose economic development is fully dependant on its natural resources. It deals with the application of the participative management between the different actors concerned who have different perceptions of natural resources. It examines the social, economic and cultural impact of something which is managed according to international standards and with very little consideration for local realities. We also underline the difficulty Gabon faces in choosing between its national economic development and conservation. This difficulty is often caused by international demands. The study also raises the question of social acceptability expressed by conflicts between actors
