Abstract:
This thesis examines Lorenzo Monaco's altarpiece the Man of Sorrows with the Virgin, St. John the Evangelist, with the Emblems and Episodes of the Passion, (c. 1404) under historical, religious, political, and liturgical rubrics. While comparing various depictions of the Man of Sorrows, this project places Lorenzo Monaco's unique interpretation within the context of events surrounding the painting's conception and realization. With particular attention to Lorenzo's distinctive composition, techniques and juxtaposition of imagery, this study shows that his Man of Sorrows in fact conveys a complex message about Florentine society in Late Gothic times.

(INTRODUÇÃO) "A cidade enquanto tal não existe. Existem diferentes formas de vida urbana." ' Fica, desde logo, clara a ideia de que, quando o objecto de estudo é a cidade, é intransponível a necessidade de aceitar a multiplicidade que a mesma implica. Se a cidade é, em si mesma, uma forma de vida urbana, então desde a sua origem que se manifestam diversidades e divergências. Um lugar pode ser habitado de diferentes formas, e isso traduz a base do que é a cidade. Se tomarmos como exemplo o termo Polis, este representa o lugar onde determinada gente, específica quanto a tradições e costumes, tem a sua sede - onde reside, onde tem o seu próprio Ethos. Esta particularidade ontológica e genealógica não se aplica, porém, ao termo latino Civitas. A diferença é substancial, sendo que, neste se manifesta a sua proveniência do termo Civis­ grupo de pessoas que se reúnem no mesmo lugar e que se submetem às mesmas leis para dar vida à cidade. De facto, hoje, concebemos a cidade como lugar onde as pessoas confluem ao aceitarem e obedecerem a uma lei. Esta é uma lógica aparentemente fácil de aceitar, mas que na realidade sugere um conflito do ponto de vista das modalidades do habitar. A Polis, a cidade-lugar, o espaço para morar, não parece suportar a tensão da ideia de universalidade. Mantemos a necessidade de dimensão humana. Mas que referencial tomamos como certo? O vínculo à estirpe ou à lei? Como se constrói uma comunidade se representamos uma série de diferentes interesses? Cada vez mais vemos a cidade como uma máquina. Cada vez mais damos prioridade à função e exigimos um instrumento que nos permita executar os nossos afazeres. À cidade, exigimos, então, multiplicidade. De facto,na cidade moderna, as presenças chave são os lugares de produção e de troca. Tudo se organiza em torno destas presenças como factores capazes de atribuir simbolismo ao todo global da cidade. A organização faz-se em função destes momentos, instituindo-se, assim, a urbanística. É a intervenção destes factores referenciais, de valor partilhado, que permite dar sentido a uma multiplicidade de outra forma dispersa. Estes corpos, ainda que rígidos ou fixos, servem de referência e permitem métricas que resolvem, ou podem resolver a totalidade do sistema. O centro histórico, tão fundamental no contexto deste trabalho, surge com o desenvolvimento da cidade em função dos pontos de produção e de troca - dominantes e centrais. Presenças estruturantes do espaço, criadoras de escalas que permitem reconhecerem a dialéctica centro-periferia. A realidade, hoje, é, no entanto, particularmente distinta. O conceito de cidade-território impede este tipo de programação, tornando o espaço algo mais indefinido, homogéneo, com uma indiferente relação entre lugares ou mesmo uma cada vez mais difícil identificação destes. Os acontecimentos não correspondem a uma ideia de agregação e identidade singular. Quanto aos centros históricos, o que acontece é que estes passam a ser não mais do que uma espécie de museus. Museus de uma memória com decadente validade criativa e produtiva. Antes da emergência desta cidade-território, o espaço da metrópole apresentava-se regrado por uma hierarquia de edifícios - os tais corpos de referência que ritmavam a métrica do conjunto. O urbanismo contemporâneo nunca deixou de procurar as garantias que a linha desses corpos proporciona, racionalizando a utilização do espaço a partir desta base. As suas qualidades e propriedades específicas desempenham tarefas de importância reguladora, e neste ponto o novo conceito de espaço urbano não diverge. O que acontece é um extrapolar dos antigos limites, e um lançar do crescimento da cidade na linha das suas directrizes originais. Tudo isto acaba por se traduzir num paradoxo, já que esta ideia de libertação dos limites e consequente crescimento, acaba contrariada com a incontornável magnetização aos corpos de referência que a geram. No fundo, este é um conflito criado pela insuperável exigência psicológica de presenças fortes, significativas e simbólicas. Resposta a este impasse, e premissa para a proposta apresentada neste trabalho, é a possibilidade destes polos. Destas actividades designadas como centrais, terem agora uma maior liberdade quanto à sua posição. No entanto, esta facilidade não deveria significar o sucumbir perante a pressão corporativa. Do investimento produtivo, comercial e administrativo, que aponta no sentido do desrespeito pelos eixos tradicionais. E que despoja o território de qualquer sentido espacial - de qualquer noção de lugar. Infelizmente, e por não ser contrariada, esta é já a realidade. O sentido é cada vez mais temporal. Na verdade, já não importa a que distância se encontra determinado ponto. Mas o tempo que demoramos a atingi-lo. O espaço tornou-se um obstáculo, não tanto uma oportunidade. Como podemos então esperar que a cidade seja um conjunto de lugares? Como é que os lugares de riqueza simbólica podem representar um obstáculo? Queremos atravessar a cidade num tempo impossível enquanto não admitimos que não seja quase impossivelmente bela. Impõem-se novos edifícios que sejam, em si, lugares. Que reftictam o tempo. Que comuniquem movimento. "Vivemos obcecados por imagens e mitos de velocidade e ubiquidade, mas os espaços que construímos insistem, obstinadamente, em definir, delimitar, demarcar. Precisamos de lugares onde habitar. Mas estes não podem ser espaços fechados que contradigam o tempo do território no qual(...) vivemos."

This research explores the Populist era in Kansas and the life of the state's twelfth governor, Lorenzo D. Lewelling. Lewelling is an important figure in the Populist movement in Kansas and his rise to power, and subsequent fall, mimics that of the movement as a whole. Through close examination of primary and secondary sources, this research paints the picture of Lewelling's life before and during his political career to give a better understanding of the state's past. This research gives context to the broader Populist movement by examining the intricacies of one of the state's leading figures.

Abstract:
La industria de fabricación de baldosas cerámicas para piso y pared ha crecido durante los últimos 10 años, provocando que las empresas inviertan más en la modernización de sus plantas y en la optimización de sus procesos, elevando así la competitividad de sus productos. Sin embargo, desde hace aproximadamente tres años, el País enfrenta un proceso de desaceleración debido a: (a) la crisis financiera internacional, (b) la caída del precio de los metales que el Perú exporta, y (c) la desaceleración del consumo privado. En el caso del sector construcción, que ha sido el soporte de la industria de baldosas cerámicas, se ha experimentado un menor crecimiento debido a un menor dinamismo del sector inmobiliario y una paralización de la inversión pública. Ante este panorama, el presente Plan Estratégico constituye una herramienta de gestión que le permitirá a Cerámica San Lorenzo no solo identificar las oportunidades del entorno para hacer frente a la desaceleración, sino también aplicar estrategias comerciales más ambiciosas que impulsen el cumplimiento de los objetivos establecidos a largo y corto plazo. Es importante recalcar que se ha aplicado el Proceso Secuencial de Planeación Estratégica propuesto por D’Alessio (2014), que guía el planeamiento desde la identificación de las principales oportunidades, amenazas, fortalezas, y debilidades de la empresa hasta la definición de las estrategias que se deben aplicar para alcanzar la visión trazada. Finalmente, con la implementación del presente Plan Estratégico se busca fortalecer la competitividad de Cerámica San Lorenzo y reforzar la difusión de su marca. Por otro lado, se pronostica para los próximos años la reactivación del sector inmobiliario y de la inversión pública, por lo que el presente plan le permitirá a la empresa estar preparada para crecer de forma rentable y sostenible en este contexto.
The manufacturing industry of ceramics for floor and wall tiles has grown during the last 10 years causing companies investing more in modernizing their plants, process optimization, increasing the competitiveness of their products. However, from around three years ago the country faces a slowdown because of: (a) the international financial crisis, (b) the fall in the price of metals that Peru exports, and (c) the slowdown of private consumption. For the construction sector, which has been the support of the ceramic tiles industry, it has experienced slower growth due to a lower dynamism of the real estate and a stagnation of public investment. In this scenario, the present Strategic Plan is a management tool that will allow Ceramica San Lorenzo not only to identify available opportunities to deal with the slowdown but also apply more ambitious commercial strategies that promote the fulfillment of the objectives set in long and short term. It is important to emphasize that it was applied the Sequentially Strategic Planning Process proposed by D'Alessio (2014) guiding the planning from the identification of the main opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses of the company to the definition of strategies to be applied and achieve the vision outlined. Finally, through the implementation of this Strategic Plan it seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of Ceramica San Lorenzo and reinforce the brand. On the other hand, it is forecast for the coming years the recovery of the real estate sector and public investment, so that this plan will allow the company to be prepared to grow profitably and sustainably in this context.

Abstract:
A presente pesquisa de mestrado consiste na tradução da obra De Voluptate de Lorenzo Valla (1407-1457), publicada pela primeira vez em 1431. Nesta obra, alvo de inúmeras polêmicas entre os pensadores humanistas da Europa do Renascimento, Valla inicia discussão que prosseguirá na obra De Libero Arbítrio (1439) sobre os conceitos de honestas e voluptas no debate entre epicuristas e estóicos, opondo-se às teses de Boécio (480-524) inscritas nos livros de I a IV da Consolação da Filosofia (século VI). Para Valla e os demais humanistas, segundo corrente bibliográfica inaugurada na década de 50 por Hans Baron, Eugênio Garin e Paul O. Kristeller, estes temas estavam intimamente relacionados ao seu modo de pensar e agir sobre a vida civil no contexto das repúblicas italianas do quattrocento, onde encontraram espaço para forjar uma cosmovisão autêntica dentro da historiografia denominada de Humanismo.
The present research consists of a translation of Lorenzo Vallas (1407-1457) De Voluptate, published for the first time in 1431. In this work which suffered many attacks from humanistic thinkers in Renaissance Europe Valla starts a discussion, carried on De Libero Arbitrio (1439), about the epicurean and stoic debate on the concepts of honestas and voluptas, where he opposes Boethiuss (480-524) theses as expressed on books I and IV of his Consolation of Philosophy (6th century). A current of historians founded in the 1950s by Hans Baron, Eugênio Garin and Paul O. Kristeller states that these themes expressed by Valla and others humanistic thinkers were intimately related to the way of thinking and the civil life in quattrocento Italian Republics, where they found a proper place to forge an authentic worldview named by the Historians as Humanism.

En termes généraux, le travail s’insère dans le cadrage théorique des Cultural Studies («études culturelles»). Ce courant de recherche, né en Grande-Bretagne dans les années 1960 à partir des travaux de R. Hoggart, S. Hall et, ensuite, de R. Williams invite à questionner la notion de culture dans toutes ses dimensions, mettant en évidence les enjeux politiques, idéologiques et de pouvoir. Selon les Cultural Studies le concept de texte ne désigne pas seulement le langage écrit, mais toute production culturelle, image comprise.Conformément à cette perspective, l’objet d’étude, c'est-à-dire l’œuvre de Lorenzo Viani est appréhendée à travers une approche transdisciplinaire. Il s’agit donc de travailler sur les textes ou, le cas échéant sur les images, à l’aide du croisement des apports de disciplines différentes telles que la sociologie, la philosophie, l’esthétique, l’histoire de l’art, les théories de la littérature, la médiologie et la sémiotique. Pour cette raison, pour le corpus primaire, c’est-à-dire toutes les œuvres publiées de Viani, une fois achevée la première étape de compréhension littérale des textes, qui a nécessité une approche philologique, a été analysé de façon ouverte, attentive à la société, à l’histoire et aux relations avec les phénomènes culturels dont ils tirent leur origine. En premier lieu, la thèse dresse une étude approfondie de la biographie de Viani. Nous avons reconstruit en détail sa formation intellectuelle et le réseau des relations que Viani, personnage très actif sur la scène politique et culturelle de son époque dans la Versilia, a construites et cultivées au cours de son existence.Compte tenu du fait que Viani, talent pluriel, a commencé son activité artistique comme peintre et dessinateur et qu’il se consacré à l’écriture (journalistique ainsi que littéraire) dans une phase successive, dans nos analyses des textes nous avons donné poids à la dimension de l’image. Nous utilisons le concept d’ «image verbale», selon la définition qu’en donne W.J.T. Mitchell. Il s’agit de comprendre d’où viennent ces images, pourquoi Viani les choisit, si elles ont une fonction esthétique ou d’une autre nature. Le but est une analyse comparée mot/image verbale. On vise à examiner si l’idée générale que Viani a du sens de l’art, à savoir art comme instrument qui permet de saisir la réalité en termes de signes, déjà assez définie dans les arts figuratifs, se présente dans la littérature de la même façon ou pas. À ce propos le corps humain, en termes d’image verbale, est choisi comme catégorie d’investigation principale pour conduire l’analyse. La recherche comble ainsi une lacune en s’intéressant à un aspect non encore examiné de l’œuvre de Viani. Notre travail ouvre de nouvelles perspectives d’investigation qui permettent de prendre en considération la production de Viani selon l’approche contemporaine des Visual Studies en analysant les phénomènes de sémiosis, c’est-à-dire de signification qui se cachent derrière l’image verbale. Encore, elle permet d’approfondir la connaissance de modalités d’utilisation croisée de plusieurs espaces sémiotiques (littérature et peinture) qui, malgré la diversité du signe, permettent d’obtenir des résultats descriptifs puissants.La recherche a permis d’obtenir des résultats importants. Nous avons vérifié la présence d’un trait constant dans toute l’œuvre de Viani, c'est-à-dire la présence d’une forte composante visuelle, s’exprimant, parmi les autres vecteurs, à travers les représentations du corps humaine. L’analyse approfondie de sa production écrite premièrement, mais également figurative, ainsi que l’étude approfondie de ses écrits et notes d’art ont permis de trouver ce fil rouge qui donne un sens à l’œuvre de Viani cohérente et, chose la plus importante, inédite
Broadly speaking, this work is framed within Cultural Studies. This current of thought, born in Great Britain in the 1960s from the works of R. Hoggart, S. Hall, and R. Williams, invites us to question the notion of culture in all its dimensions, evidencing political, ideological, and power issues. According to Cultural Studies, the concept of text designates not only that of written language, but all cultural production, including image.In keeping with this perspective, the object of study, that is Lorenzo Viani’s work, is undertaken through a transdisciplinary approach. The texts, or in this case images, are worked on aided by a crossover of contributions by different disciplines, such as Sociology, Philosophy, Aesthetics, Art History, Literature Theories, Mediology, and Semiotics.Because of this, the main corpus, as in all of Viani’s published works, once achieved the first stage of literal comprehension of the texts which required a philological approach, was analysed in an open manner, considering of society, history, and relationships with cultural phenomenons from which they originate. In first place, the thesis deals with an in-depth study of Viani’s biography. We have reconstructed in detail his intellectual education and the network of relationships which Viani, who was a very active character in the political and cultural scene of Versilia in his time, built and nurtured throughout his life.Taking into account the fact that Viani, one of many talents, began his artistic endeavors as painter and illustrator, and that he devoted himself to writing (journalistic and literary) in a subsequent phase, we have given weight to the dimension of image in our analyses of his texts. We use the concept of “spoken image”, going by W.J.T. Mitchell’s definition. That is to understand where these images come from, why Viani chose them, and if they have an aesthetic function or one of another nature. The objective is a comparative analysis between word/spoken image. We aim to examine if the general idea that Viani has of the meaning of art, that is of art as a tool that allows us to seize reality in terms of signs, already very defined in Figurative Arts, is present in Literature in the same manner or not.To this end the human body, in terms of a spoken image, was chosen as the main research category to conduct the analysis. The investigation thus covers a gap by focusing on an aspect of Viani’s work that has not yet been examined.Our work opens new investigative perspective that allow us to take into consideration Viani’s production through the contemporary Visual Studies approach by analysing the phenomenons of semiosis, that is to say hidden meanings behind the spoken image. Moreover, it allows us to deepen our knowledge of crossover modes of various semiotic spaces (Literature and Painting) which, despite the variety of signs, allows us to obtain powerful descriptive results.This research has allowed us to obtain important results. We have verified the presence of a constant trait in all of Viani’s work, namely the presence of a strong visual component, expressed, among other vectors, through representations of the human body. The in-depth analysis of his written, yet just as figurative, works, as well as the in-depth analysis of his writings and notations about Art, has allowed us to find this red string that gives Viani’s work a coherent and, most importantly, as of yet unheard of meaning

La tesis está compuesta de 14 capítulos, donde se analizarán temas relacionados con ubicación y dimensionamiento de planta, diseño de producto, planeamiento y diseño de productos, planeamiento y diseño de proceso, planeamiento y diseño de planta, planeamiento y diseño del trabajo, planeamiento agregado, programación de operaciones productivas, gestión logística, gestión de costos, gestión y control de calidad, gestión de mantenimiento, y cadena de suministro. En el desarrollo de la tesis se propondrán mejoras que serán analizadas con el enfoque de elevar la rentabilidad y perfeccionar los métodos de trabajo. Las mejoras desarrolladas se enfocan en capítulos de gestión, como planeamiento y diseño de producto, planeamiento y diseño de proceso, gestión de logística, gestión de costos y gestión de mantenimiento, donde se utilizarán diversas metodologías de gestión y se aplicarán herramientas de análisis para cuantificarlas y generar ahorros significativos en la empresa. Con estas mejoras, se obtendrán ahorros para el año 2017 que representan el 4.5% a 5% de las ventas totales, por el cual se obtendrá un precio más competitivo en el mercado y se obtendrá poder de negociación ante la competencia; brindando una mejor opción de compra para sus clientes
The purpose of this thesis is the study of the operational diagnosis of Ceramics San Lorenzo’s company. In this, there is the development of several chapters that contained areas of better relevance into the organization, with the purpose of generating beneficial proposals for the organization. All the 14 chapters analyze themes related to the location and size of the plant, design of the product, planning and conception of the products, planning and process design, planning and plant design, planning and work design, attached or aggregated planning, productive operational programming, logistics management, cost management, management and quality control, maintenance management and supply chain. Development of this thesis suggests doing some improvements that will be analyzed to raising the profitability and enhancing working methods. Developed improvements focus on management chapters, as product planning and design, planning and process design, logistics management, or cost and maintenance management, where various management methodologies will be applicated, like analysis tools to quantify and generate significant savings for the company. Abstract:
I began with a place, the Roman ruin of San Lorenzo in Milan. This place has been a "provocateur," not an object or a set of parameters from which I responded. Architectural readings of the city are contaminated with foreshadowings or hints of what is yet to appear. One may read the city as "Janus" who pulsates back and forth leaving traces of past cosmogonies which look forward to being remembered. As the "haruspex" regards the liver in order to auspiciously found a city, distinct bodies of the city are "mirrors of the world at the moment of sacrifice."

Reading the city as a Janus-faced entity suggests a slippery liminal zone between what is often clearly separated as existing and intervening. The act of drawing the site is also an act of remaking the site. The section of the city is a hieroglyph to be deciphered and "completed." This "completion" is necessary but not absolute.

La presente tesis tiene por finalidad establecer, desde una lectura de la teoría de género, un acercamiento por la temporalidad y afectos queer en un personaje relatado en un cuadro de costumbres decimonónico llamado Lorenzita (1878). Sobre la base de la teoría de las emociones y fenomenología queer en Sara Ahmed (2014, 2018), además del enfoque en los estudios culturales poscoloniales, analizaré los espacios discursivos heteronormativos y masculinizantes representados en el cuadro de costumbres escrito por Manuel Atanasio Fuentes. El motivo de mi análisis radica en develar las emociones subyacentes en los sujetos heteronormativizados como respuesta ante lo abyecto queer en Lorenzita. Dichos afectos son muestras contradictorias de las bases fundacionales de la modernización latinoamericana: melancolías, repugnancias y odios disfrazados en amores (re)productivos como evidencias que se distancian del Otro queer para demostrar la frágil ideología masculinizante en el Perú del siglo XIX.

This document provides a resource for performers of Brazilian piano music. Chapter One explains why an awareness and understanding of the choreography, historical and social context of the indigenous dances of Brazil are important to accurately interpret Brazilian piano music.The second chapter investigates the development of music and dance in the Brazilian culture by examining the historical background and cultural origins of the three main influences on the resulting miscegenation within the population: Portuguese, Native Indians and Africans. A concise historical overview of the influence of dance on compositions for piano is presented in Chapter Three. The period of time covered is divided in two main phases. The period of European dominance is examined first through the composers Brazílio Itiberê da Cunha, Alexandre Levy and Alberto Nepomuceno. The second period covers the movement toward Nationalism after 1914, representative composers being Ernesto Nazareth, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Camargo Guarnieri.Chapter Four introduces the four selected dances, Cateretê, Jongo, Congada and Frevo, and provides insights into the origin, purpose, musical elements and choreography of these dances.Finally, in Chapter Five a comparison is made of the similarities between the specific dance and its corresponding piano composition. Brief biographies of the composers, Francisco Mignone, Lorenzo Fernandez and Marlos Nobre are provided along with a discussion on how the piano performance can be enhanced by an understanding and portrayal of the dance.

Dans cet étude j’ai essayé d’analyser, en en suivant l’évolution, les moments les plus significatifs de l’appréciation de la pensée épicurienne au début de l’ère moderne, en donnant une attention particulière à ceux qui, aux XVème et XVIème siècles, se sont inspirés de la pensée d’Epicure pour élaborer une éthique humaine, laïque et indépendante de la religion. Cependant, en considération de la grandeur du sujet et de l’importance des auteurs qui peuvent être considérés comme représentants de la nouvelle approche à l’égard du philosophe du Jardin, j’ai jugé opportun focaliser l’attention sur l’auteur qui, plus que d’autres, a opéré une revendication explicite de l’épicurisme au XVème siècle: il s’agit de Lorenzo Valla et de son dialogue De voluptate. L'intention était celle de reconstruire l'histoire de la composition du dialogue, ainsi que d'en analyser les contenus à la lumière du rapport essentiel, qui dans l'œuvre est institué, entre argumentation philosophique et exposition rhétorique; mais histoire du texte, d’un texte qui veut se faire porteur d’une interprétation originale de l’éthique d’Epicure, est au même temps histoire du contexte dans lequel telle œuvre fut conçue. J’ai donc essayé, pas seulement de fournir une lecture exhaustive du dialogue, mais surtout d'en donner raison à la lumière de la nouvelle atmosphère humaniste dans laquelle Valla écrivait, nouvelle atmosphère qui avait permis une réévaluation de la philosophie d'Epicure à différents niveaux et avec différents résultats; réévaluation pas orthodoxe, c’est à dire de la figure historique d'Epicure, mais qui toutefois semble d'extrême intérêt pour la formation de la pensée utilitariste moderne
In this study I tried to analyze, following its evolution, the appreciation of the Epicurean thought at the beginning of the modern era, giving particular attention to those who, in the 15th and 16th centuries, were inspired by the thought of Epicurus to elaborate an ethics human and laic. However taking into consideration the importance of the authors who can be considered as representatives of the new approach towards the philosopher of the Garden, I considered opportune to focus the attention on the author who, more than the others, in the 15th century operated an explicit revaluation of the Epicureanism: Lorenzo Valla its dialogue De voluptate. The aim was the analysis of the dialogue composition history, as well as the examination of its contents considered under the light of the essential relationship, established in the work, between philosophy and rhetoric. I hence tried, not only to supply an exhaustive reading of the dialogue, but also to give reason of it considering the new humanistic atmosphere in which Valla wrote, new atmosphere which had allowed a revaluation of the philosophy of Epicurus at different levels and with different results; revaluation not orthodox, that is of the historic figure of Epicurus, but that however seems of extreme interest for the creation of the modern utilitarian thought

Abstract:
This work questions the present migration toward prescriptive building procedures through a micro-historical reading of Michelangelo's use of architectural template drawings. Examining the artist's ten surviving paper templates (called "modani") from the facade of San Lorenzo (1516-1520), the Medici Chapel (1519-1525), and the Laurentian Library (1524-1527), Michelangelo's template-making practices are mined for possible ways to reorient current thinking toward a dynamic worksite that embraces, rather than shuns, in-progress alterations. Taking the common word origin of 'template' and 'temper' as a starting clue, the relationship between Michelangelo's template drawings and the building site are theorized as a process of tempering, a 15th and 16th century term investigated through key sources such as Ficino's writings on health ("De vita"), the commentaries on Vitruvius by Barbaro and Cesariano, and Biringuccio's treatise on metallurgy ("De la pirotechnia"). From this, key connections emerge between Michelangelo's template-making and contemporaneous practices of tempering, where dynamic, in-situ material adjustments achieve great effect through tiny alterations. Whether in the health of the body, music, or material techniques, tempering offers a method of in-progress commensuration between axiomatic proportions and those of material, sensibly present harmonies. The tempering power of templates is investigated in three parts that follow the transmutation of Michelangelo's templates between paper, tin, and stone. The investigation begins with paper and, following a close examination of the extant drawings, discredits the common conclusion that Michelangelo's templates were drawn free-hand. Rather, it is shown that the extant templates are actually a small fragment of a once robust collection of parent and offspring templates related through tracing. Next, parallel practices in bell-casting and column profiling are discussed in terms of template materials, particularly tin, and how small adjustments may be leveraged to great narrative and conceptual effect in the emerging work. The final part examines the San Lorenzo building site through assembling the body of architecture, where templates are seen as surrogate building stones in the conception and adjustment of the in-progress work. The dissertation concludes with an assertion that Michelangelo's use of templates as instruments for micro-interventions amidst an unstable building site serves as a marvelous exemplar for tempering as a method for materializing the poetic image through disciplined practice.

Esso viene conservato nell’Archivio storico della Santa Casa di Loreto, ed è meglio conosciuto con il nome apocrifo di Libro di spese diverse. Possiamo considerarlo uno dei più significativi documenti del Rinascimento italiano: infatti esso ci parla dei rapporti che l’artista ha intessuto con committenti, colleghi ed amici, rivelando tanto la sua condotta di vita che la sua attività. È una ricerca che tenta di concentrarsi sull’artista attraverso una lettura più corretta di questa fonte: infatti in passato il Libro di spese diverse era considerato un diario e studiato attraverso una visione non consona al genere di riferimento.
Regarding my doctoral project, I am conducting research on the analysis and the commentary of the account book by Lorenzo Lotto. It is held at historical archive in Loreto, and it is better known as Libro di spese diverse, an apocryphal name which we find on the front page. We can consider it as one of the most important document for the Italian Renaissance studies: indeed, the Lotto’s document refers to meetings with patrons, colleagues and friends, showing his lifestyle as well as his professional activity. This research focuses the attention on the artist reading this source more correctly: in the past times the Libro di spese diverse was considered a diary and it was studied by a wrong point of view.

Caracteriza la composición de las comunidades de macroinvertebrados bentónicos del submareal somero de la isla San Lorenzo. Los muestreos se realizaron a lo largo de 13 transectos perpendiculares a la línea de costa, cada transecto presentó cuatro estaciones entre los 3 y 20 m de profundidad, en el periodo de junio y noviembre del 2010. Posteriormente, en base al análisis de muestras se obtuvieron los datos de número de especies, número de individuos y peso húmedo por taxa. La composición de las comunidades fue analizada en base a tres factores: sustrato, profundidad (4 rangos) y exposición al oleaje, además se evaluó la influencia de estos factores sobre estas comunidades. Los resultados mostraron que los fondos submareales de la isla San Lorenzo albergan un importante número de invertebrados macrobentonicos, registrando un total de 219 taxa dominados por los Phyla Annelida, Mollusca y Arthropoda. Los análisis multivariados mostraron que el único factor que influye significativamente en la composición de las comunidades es el tipo de sustrato. Los fondos de sustrato rocoso y mixto fueron los tipos de sustrato que presentaron el mayor número de taxa, individuos, mayor biomasa, diversidad y riqueza de especies, en cambio los sustratos arenoso y fangoso presentaron valores inferiores. Se concluye que la composición de las comunidades de invertebrados bentónicos en la Isla San Lorenzo, el único factor que influye significativamente es el tipo de sustrato, y que estas comunidades poseen valores de diversidad específica entre altos y moderados.
