Abstract:

Lorenzo de’ Medici, uomo di profonda fede, data la mirabile educazione ricevuta in famiglia, accettò il governo della città dopo la morte del padre, Piero il Gottoso, come dovere, sentendone il peso, data la sua giovane età di 21 anni, secondo quanto lui stesso dice “mal volentieri accettai”. In tutta la sua vita, non molto lunga, privilegiò come fine il conseguimento del bene comune e non il proprio interesse. Attento anche alle situazioni dei meno fortunati, come il popolo fiorentino e i contadini del Mugello, si rivelò un abile politico che riuscì ad equilibrare la politica dei vari staterelli italiani, ma non dimenticò mai quale fosse il traguardo vero della vita dell’uomo e cioè guardare verso Dio staccandosi dalle ambizioni della vita terrena. Soprattutto raccomandò ai figli di saper governare diventando esempio “perché il signore deve essere servo de’ suoi servi” come scrive nella Sacra rappresentazione di Giovanni e Paolo messa in scena il 17 febbraio 1491 nella Compagnia del Vangelista.

Informal politics in the italian city state and Tuscany This proseminar – paper deals with the corruption and Patronage in late medieval and modern age Florence. The reign of the Medici is especially looked at with prominent figures such as Lorenzo de Medici or Cosimo de Medici. The necessary institutions for this to happen are adressed as well as the forms these practices had. The ties with the pope and the church are also a part of the paper. As will be shown, the leaders of Florence often had to tolerate forms of corruption due to the nature of this italian city state.

Abstract:

Around the end of the second decade of the sixteenth century, in the Villa Medici of Poggio a Caiano in the vicinity of Florence, the Florentine artist Andrea del Sarto painted a great fresco, commissioned by Pope Leo X in honour of his late father, Lorenzo de’ Medici. This fresco contains one of the earliest representations in Europe of a living South American primate, which can easily be identified as Marcgrave's capuchin, Cebus flavius ( Schreber, 1774 ). The appearance is so accurate that we can assume that the painter was familiar with the animal, and may even have used a live monkey as a model. Marcgrave's capuchin is a taxon that was recently rediscovered in Brazil, where it has been found in fragments of the Atlantic Forest in the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Paraíba. The portrayal of this species in the early sixteenth-century decoration of Poggio a Caiano raises interesting questions about the popularity of Brazilian primates in European artistic and scientific circles from the time of the discovery of the New World, and about the rapidity of the initial anthropogenic diffusion of some of these animals beyond their homeland.

Il Barlaam e Josafat di Bernardo Pulci rappresenta sia un interessante testo drammaturgico, sia un altrettanto originale e interessante sottotesto encomiastico di Lorenzo il Magnifico. Rappresentata nel 1474, come evidenziato da alcuni documenti d'archi-vio, la trama di questa sacra rappresentazione altro non è che la storia di Siddharta poi detto il Buddha tradotta in greco, e poi cristianizzata e circolata in Europa attraverso numerosi manoscritti. Trasformati i personaggi principali nei santi Barlaam e Josafat, un eremita e un giovane principe (alias il Siddharta della fonte), la leggenda venne inclusa nella sua Legenda Aurea da Varagine. Pulci, anche seguendo un gusto per l'orientalismo successivo al concilio delle chiese d'Oriente e d'Occidente tenutosi a Firenze nel 1439, riesce a intessere all'interno di una sacra rappresentazione, andata in scena in S. Marco, e dunque nella sfera d'influenza culturale e politica dei Medici, una raffinatissima trama encomiastica, ma anche un ancor più abile sottotesto politico tutto in favore delle manovre condotte dal Magnifico in quegli anni.

AbstractSources show that the Flemish artist Johannes Stradanus, whose career flourished from about 1555 in Florence, collaborated on several occasions on large-scale, temporary decorations, most of them commissioned by the grand dukes de'Medici, for important dynastic events such as baptisms, entries into cities and funerals. A multitude of artists and craftsmen carried out these decorations on the basis of often complicated iconographic programmes. In 1564, for instance, on the occasion of Michelangelo's funeral in S. Lorenzo, Stradanus painted the grisaille Michelangelo in 1529 in his dwelling in the Giudecca being received by the nobles of Venice by order of the Doge Andrea Gritti and the Signoria. In 1565, for the triumphal entry into the city of Johanna of Austria, he painted all the pictures decorating the triumphal arch erected on the Canto de' Tornaquinci. These consisted of five scenes glorifying the following exploits of rulers of the House of Austria: Rudolf conferring the Archdukedom of Austria on Albrecht I, Maximilian II being crowned emperor, Ferdinand I defending Vienna against the Turks, Albrecht slaing Adolf of Nassau in a battle, Philip II of Spain receiving the corona obsidionalis from Malta and two large trompe-l'oeil street views. In 1574, for the funeral of Cosimo I de'Medici in S. Lorenzo, Stradanus was probably involved in the painting of the skeletons and coats of arms. Furthermore, on the occasion of Francesco I de' Medici's funeral in S. Lorenzo in 1587, he painted the grisaille Francesco visiting his betrothed, Johanna of Austria, in Innsbruck; in 1588, for the entry of Ferdinando I de' Medici into Pisa, the canvas The burial of Pope Stephen I in the catacomb of Callixtus for the decoration of S. Stefano dei Cavalieri; in 1589, for the entry of Christina of Lorraine, the painting The retreat of the Turks after the siege of Vienna, as part of the decorations on the Canto de' Bischeri. Finally, in 1598, for the obsequies in memory of Philip II of Spain in S. Lorenzo, the grisaillc The siege and capture of Antwerp; for the same occasion he also provided the design for the grisaille The conquest of the Philippine islands, painted by his son Scipione. Stradanus' first commissions date from the start of his career in Florence, when he was working in Vasari's studio. As one of the master's assistants in decorating the Palazzo Vecchio, he had already gained ample experience in large-scale painting for the Medici. After leaving Vasari's studio in about 157 and setting up as an independent artist, Stradanus remained one of the leading Florentine artists who received commissions for official large-scale decors. He retained this status up to a venerable age, a sign of the appreciation he continued to enjoy in this field. Unfortunately none of Stradanus' decorative work has survived, with the exception of the canvas in Pisa. An impression of his skill in this field in conveyed by contemporary sources and the sketches, drawings, etchings and engravings presented in this article. This material clearly shows that in his long and productive life Stradanus was not only active as a painter of frescos and altarpieces and a designer of tapestries and engravings, but also played a prominent role at the court of the Medici as a painter of decorations.

Abstract:

Re-examination of a key group of Michelangelo's sketches for the Laurentian Library, located in the monastic complex of Florence's S. Lorenzo, offers a new understanding of his design process and the project as it was built. While drawings by Michelangelo survive for all three of the library's intended spaces, this study concentrates on a number of drawings on four sheets for the entrance vestibule, or ricetto, and the two drawings for what would have constituted the third space, the unbuilt rare books room. It offers a major revision of Rudolf Wittkower's pioneering study of the library's design stages, and will also allow for the identification and discussion of key precedents and their role in the development of Michelangelo's design. These included ancient Roman and Renaissance sources, as well as his own designs both for the unbuilt façade of S. Lorenzo, and for the Medici Chapel attached to the same church (Fig. 1). Consideration of the drawings for the Laurentian Library ricetto in conjunction with letters written to Michelangelo from his Roman agent, Giovanni Francesco Fattucci, and the papal secretary Pier Paolo Marzi, recording Pope Clement VII's responses to a number of important design ideas, allows for a reliable reconstruction of Michelangelo's penultimate scheme for the ricetto, which enables the recognition of a key ancient precedent that inspired Michelangelo, and throws new light on the genesis of the final design. It becomes clear, too, that Michelangelo would later rework certain design ideas that he developed in these Laurentian Library sketches for subsequent projects in Rome, including an early design for the Palazzo dei Conservatori, and also the final form of both this palace and the Palazzo Senatorio.

Karl Steinbuch (1917-2005) war ein Pionier in der Computertechnik und einﬂussreich in Futurologie und Kybernetik. Als Entwicklungsleiter bei Standard Elektronik Lorenz meldete er zahlreiche Patente an und entwickelte als Professor an der TH Karlsruhe 1961 eines der ersten künstlichen neuronalen Netze. Zugleich äußerte sich Steinbuch über Jahrzehnte politisch - mit Bestsellern und Artikeln, in Rundfunksendungen und im Fernsehen. Als Wahlkampfhelfer von Willy Brandt war er zugleich wissenschaftlicher Berater der SPD, ehe es 1972 zum oﬀenen Konﬂikt kam. Steinbuch näherte sich zunächst der Union, dann nationalistischen Standpunkten an. In der Person von Karl Steinbuch kristallisieren verschiedene Dimensionen des Verhältnisses von Technik und Politik, Technokratie und technological fix. Die Untersuchung der Wortmeldungen des Technik-Intellektuellen eröﬀnet somit Perspektiven, wie technisch strukturiertes Denken Vorstellungen über Gesellschaft und Politik prägen kann. Zugleich zeigt sich, dass ein konstantes Technikverständnis keineswegs zu konstanten politischen Ansichten führt, wenngleich eine Nähe zu autoritärem Denken oﬀenbar wird. Der Aufsatz liefert zudem neue Hinweise zur Biograﬁe Steinbuchs, deren weitere Erforschung aufgrund seiner zentralen Rolle in der politischen Kultur des deutschen Südwestens als Desiderat gekennzeichnet wird.

Dans cette interview, Lorenzo Menoud, nous propose une réflexion stimulante sur la narrativité. Selon lui, la narrativité n’est pas un concept qui serait défini indubitablement par certaines propriétés essentielles, mais plutôt un terme dont on a tou·te·s une idée, plus ou moins précise et plus ou moins variable. Ainsi, la narrativité se constitue dans un réseau conceptuel au croisement de plusieurs enjeux, parmi lesquels : qu’est-ce que l’on envisage comme un récit et pourquoi ? quels rapports la narrativité entretient-elle avec la fiction et l’art ? pour quelles raisons raconte-t-on des histoires ? Abstract:

El autor en este ensayo recupera las posturas centrales de la obra del pensador florentino Nicolás Maquiavelo, a propósito de la celebración de los 500 años de la aparición de su célebre libro El Príncipe. En la discusión de la ciencia política, Maquiavelo aparece como su fundador e inspirador principal; desde entonces se delinean sus rasgos fundamentales; el estudio de la política es el estudio de la conducta humana atravesada por la lógica del poder. La modernidad de Maquiavelo, -nos indica el autor- está en su postura secular en un contexto de fuertes tensiones religiosas como fueron las que se desataron en el contexto del renacimiento italiano, del cual es seguramente uno de sus máximos exponentes; la política deja de ser la instrumentación en la tierra de un poder sobrenatural y pasa a ser la construcción de una obra humana por excelencia. Tal cual acontece con la ciencia natural y experimental de Telesio o de Galileo; de igual forma, la ciencia de Maquiavelo es la experimentación de la mejor forma de organización de las relaciones interhumanas. En su forma germinal, la política es guerra y enfrentamiento. El Príncipe debe estar en capacidad de construir su poder mediante la anulación de los otros poderes; política y diplomacia se presentan como dos caras de una misma moneda, como arte de arreglar los conflictos o de preparar las mejores condiciones para el enfrentamiento y para la guerra; una funcionalidad alterna que tiene que ver con la presentación de los medios más adecuados para conseguir, mantener y reproducir el poder político. Una combinación de pragmatismo y visión estratégica que Maquiavelo no encontró en los líderes de su tiempo; la tragedia de Maquiavelo no consistió solamente en su aislamiento de las lógicas del poder, en su dificultad por incidir decisivamente en el curso político de la Florencia de su época, su mayor tragedia residió en la indiferencia con la cual fue acogido su opúsculo De principatibus por Lorenzo de Medici, a quien estaba dedicado y en quien confiaba la tarea del resurgimiento de Italia; indiferencia que contrastará con la aceptación que su obra tendrá en la posteridad, una aceptación enormemente polémica, de elogio y rechazo, pero en ningún caso de indiferencia.

Cet article est l´édition critique des Stanze in lode delle più famose cortigiane di Venegia par Marco Bandirini, publiés à Vénice à 1540, dont l´exemplaire est part de la collection de la British Library. Comme ses oeuvres montrent, l´auteur, partisan d´Ariosto, est plus intéressant pour comprendre les modes littéraires du temps que par son valeur poétique. En suivant le genre de las Stanze in lode di nobildonne, il loue ainsi les courtisanes plus célèbres de Vénice comme modéles de vertu et honnêteté, loin des canon de la poésie pornographique par Pietro Aretino ou Lorenzo Venier.

El Ms. K-III-4 de la Biblioteca de San Lorenzo de El Escorial reúne tres poemas del temprano siglo XIII que presentan numerosos rasgos comunes, en particular temáticos, a pesar de sus diferencias. Las asociaciones entre unos y otros los acercan en la dinámica compilatoria del códice, a pesar de que la crítica previamente los distinguiera como representantes del “mester de clerecía” y del “mester de juglaría” hispánicos debido a su metro estilizado (Libro de Apolonio) o su metro popular (Vida de Santa María Egipciaca y Libro de los tres reyes de Oriente). La ejemplaridad cristiana es el eje que permite unificarlos, mediante la oposición bien-mal que configura cada poema y de la identificación de las formas del bien con lo colectivo y de las manifestaciones del mal, en contraposición, con la individualidad.

Im Jahre 1954 erschien eine Sonderbriefmarke der Deutschen Bundespost von Bertha Pappenheim (1859–1936) in der Reihe «Helfer der Menschheit» gemeinsam mit Käthe Kollwitz, Lorenz Werthmann und Johann Friedrich Oberlin. Während das Engagement dieser bedeutenden Frau als Sozialarbeiterin und Frauenrechtlerin in der Vergangenheit auch an anderer Stelle eine Würdigung erfuhr, wurde sie von der pflegehistorischen Biographik bislang nicht zur Kenntnis genommen. Der vorliegende Beitrag, der einen Überblick über das Leben und Werk von Bertha Pappenheim vermittelt, arbeitet von daher schwerpunktmäßig ihre Bedeutung für die Krankenpflege heraus.

O artigo trata do comparecimento da temática ‘educação pública’ na obra pedagógica do educador espanhol Lorenzo Luzuriaga, buscando uma compreensão acerca dos traços de sua escrita da história da educação que são dados a ver nos seus títulos que integram a Biblioteca del Maestro, coleção organizada por ele mesmo na Editorial Losada de Buenos Aires. Tais traços são pensados fundamentalmente a partir da análise do livro Historia de la educación pública, publicado em 1946, e também por intermédio da perscrutação da trajetória intelectual de Luzuriaga. Os procedimentos adotados intentam fornecer possíveis respostas às representações assumidas por uma noção cara ao seu professado escolanovismo, o da prerrogativa estatal na organização da educação, tomando-se por ângulo de observação uma das obras representativas do seu modo de escrita da história da educação. Os resultados da investigação apontam para o enquadramento da temática na perspectiva do internacionalismo que ganhava força com o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial e a criação de instituições de alcance global, como a Organização das Nações Unidas.

Introducción: se busca comprender la salud sexual y reproductiva de las adolescentes de las comunidades de San José, Tunzará y Veneros del Resguardo Indígena San Lorenzo, departamento de Caldas, Colombia, desde una visión que abarque la interrelación entre una descripción de las vivencias y percepciones individuales del comportamiento reproductivo, principalmente de la primera menstruación, una caracterización del acceso a los sistemas médicos para su salud sexual y reproductiva, como la partería tradicional, y un análisis de esta a partir de algunas condiciones grupales y estructurales, como el trabajo doméstico de las mujeres indígenas en las ciudades y los procesos organizativos de ellas. Desarrollo: para esta comprensión, se optó por el paradigma cualitativo, con una metodología etnográfica basada principalmente en observación, observación participante, 21 entrevistas abiertas, 30 entrevistas semiestructuradas y 3 grupos de discusión, con el complemento de una técnica cuantitativa que implicó la realización de 23 historias reproductivas. Conclusiones: se visibiliza cómo la salud sexual y reproductiva de las adolescentes indígenas requiere de una comprensión basada en la contextualización e interrelación de los niveles individuales, grupales y estructurales que influyen y afectan a las mujeres indígenas para poder adecuar un sistema de salud propio e intercultural.

Además de la cosecha de uva para consumo en fresco, elaboración de jugos y la producción de vinos, los viñedos (Vitis vinifera L.) por su condición de plantas leñosas y longevas pueden tener una participación importante en la asimilación y retención del carbono atmosférico. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la tasa de intercambio neto de bióxido de carbono del ecosistema por sus siglas en inglés (NEE) en un viñedo durante su ciclo de producción, y su relación con el secuestro de carbono atmosférico. El estudio se realizó (de abril a diciembre de 2018) en un viñedo del cultivar Shiraz de 11 años, de la Vinícola San Lorenzo, Parras, Coahuila. La tasa de flujo de bióxido de carbono entre el dosel del viñedo y la atmósfera, a través de los meses de crecimiento se midió con los sensores de un sistema de covarianza eddy. De abril a noviembre el viñedo actúa como un sumidero de carbono atmosférico y durante mayo, junio y julio se tuvieron los valores mayores de NEE, con un valor promedio de -3.014 g C m-2 s-1. El carbono almacenado en la madera de las plantas del viñedo fue 3.35 t C ha-1. Estos resultados muestran que, los viñedos son sistemas agrícolas que pueden tener una participación importante en la mitigación del bióxido de carbono atmosférico, que aunado a su condición de plantas leñosas-longevas y las grandes superficies establecidas de viñedos en México y el mundo, son ecosistemas de almacenamientos de carbono muy importantes.

Artykuł poświęcony jest wysokiej klasy medalowi znanemu z niewielkiej liczby egzemplarzy wybitych w złocie i srebrze ku czci biskupa krakowskiego Andrzeja Trzebickiego (1677). Na awersie przedstawiono popiersie hierarchy w prawo z legendą biegnącą dookoła, natomiast na rewersie wizerunek łabędzia z łacińską dewizą i datą. Emisja miała miejsca w Gdańsku, a projekt numizmatu wykonał Johann Höhn Mł. Niestety emitent, ani okoliczności zamówienia nie są znane. Kluczowe znaczenie ma prawidłowa interpretacja sygli na awersie: ATH D.D.D., które dotychczas czytano: „Andreas Trzebicki honor dat, donat, dedicat”. W myśl takiej lekcji sam biskup byłby emitentem medalu ku swojej czci. Autorzy po analizie źródeł zaproponowali wariantywne propozycje odczytu: „Andreae Trzebicki Honori Dat Dedit Dedicat” lub „Andreae Trzebicki Haec [numisma?] Data Decreto Decurionum”. Druga lekcja wydaje się prawdopodobniejsza, co skłania do hipotetycznego uznania za emitenta medalu krakowskiej rady miejskiej. Bezpośrednim powodem emisji mogło być popieranie przez Trzebickiego starań o uzyskanie przez władze Krakowa samodzielności w wybieraniu rajców, dotąd wskazywanych przez miejscowego wojewodę. Starania te miały miejsce w 1677 r. i zakończyły się wydaniem przez króla Jana III Sobieskiego odpowiedniego przywileju (30 grudnia) w Gdańsku. Wspaniały medal ma wydźwięk apologetyczny i głosi chwałę hierarchy nie tylko przez ukazanie jego wiernej podobizny. Trzebicki posługiwał się herbem łabędź, który był interpretowany powszechnie jako symbol czystości. Dewiza Candore odnosi się zarówno do bieli łabędzia, jak do zasad przyświecających biskupowi w życiu prywatnym i działalności publicznej. Omawiany medal cieszył się od początku szczególnym uznaniem kolekcjonerów, o czym zaświadcza jego dokładna analiza w opracowaniu kolekcji medali króla Fryderyka I w Berlinie autorstwa Lorenza Begera (1704). Autor zwrócił uwagę na błędną z punktu widzenia protestanta tytulaturę hierarchy „Dei et Apostolicae Sedis gratia”), a także na ambiwalencję łabędzia jako symbolu czystości (ptak ten ma czarną skórę ukrytą pod białymi piórami, co można interpretować jako dwoistość, nieczystość intencji i hipokryzję). Summary: The paper deals with a high-quality and very rare medal issued in honour of the Bishop of Cracow Andrzej Trzebicki in 1677, of which only a few specimens struck in gold and silver are known. Its obverse represents a bust-length image of the prelate turned right, with a legend running around the rim, while the reverse features an image of a swan accompanied by a Latin motto and date. The medal, issued in Gdańsk, was executed after a design by Johann Höhn the Younger. Regrettably, neither the issuer nor the circumstances of the medal’s commission are known. What is of key importance for determining the above facts is the correct reading of the sigla: ‘ATH D.D.D’, inscribed on the obverse, which so far have been deciphered as: ‘Andreas Trzebicki honor dat, donat, dedicat’. In keeping with this reading, the bishop himself would have been the issuer of a medal struck in his honour. Having analysed documentary evidence, the authors of the present paper have put forward alternative readings of the inscription: ‘Andreae Trzebicki Honori Dat Dedit Dedicat’ or ‘Andreae Trzebicki Haec [numisma?] Data Decreto Decurionum’. The latter reading seems to be more plausible and suggests that, hypothetically, the medal may have been issued by the Cracow city council. The immediate reason for issuing the medal may have been Trzebicki’s support of the strivings of the municipal authorities of Cracow for autonomy in electing members of the city council, which until then were appointed by the local voivode. These efforts took place in 1677 and concluded with a charter issued by King John III Sobieski in Gdańsk on 30 December of that year, granting the city the requested rights. The magnificent medal reveals an aspect of eulogising the prelate, and his praise is expressed not only through his faithful likeness depicted on the obverse. Trzebicki used the ‘Swan’ coat of arms, and the swan was widely interpreted as a symbol of chastity. The motto ‘Candore’ on the reverse refers to not only the whiteness of the swan but also to the principles to which the bishop adhered, both in his private life and in carrying out his public duties. The medal under discussion has from the very beginning enjoyed a special appreciation of collectors, as attested by his detailed analysis included in a study of the medallic collection of King Frederick I in Berlin, by Lorenz Beger, published 1704. Beger has noted the titulature of the prelate, ‘Dei et Apostolicae Sedis gratia’ – which he considered incorrect (from a Protestant point of view). Additionally, he pointed out to the ambiguity of the swan as a symbol of chastity, as the bird has a black skin hidden under white plumage, which can be interpreted as duplicity, unfair intentions and hypocrisy.

Abstract:

In Reggio Emilia, the sculptor Prospero Spani, also known as Clemente (1516-1584), created two statues representing Adam and on the facade of the cathedral. Along with Saint Daria and Saint Crisanto, they were both commissioned in 1552. The two statues indisputably draw inspiration from Dawn and Dusk, which are part of the monument dedicated to Lorenzo de’ Medici in the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo in Florence, work of Michelangelo Buonarroti. In January 1892, Eva’s leg by Prospero Clemente broke and fell to the ground. During the restoration, it was noticed that the leg and all other statues were empty inside. There is no formal documentary evidence of Clemente travelling to Florence, where Buonarroti's New Sacristy was opened to the public in 1556 and where, only later on, by the will of Cosimo I, were carried out some engravings representing the whole composition. Despite the existence of other drawings, casts were mainly responsible for spreading Michelangelo’s inventions for the Medici tombs. In the sixteenth century, it was only possible to talk of a culture of casts after 1540 King Francis I Valois’ initiative to ask Francesco Primaticcio – who was already occupied working for him at the decoration of Fontainebleau – to procure the moulds of Rome’s best ancient statues in order to reproduce them. Among the commissioned casts there were also those from Michelangelo, an artist who was extremely admired by the French. As known, masterpieces realised for the King of France had an immediate impact in Italy, which was primarily possible thanks to Primaticcio’s numerous trips in Emilia, where the painter had his own home and used to recruit his collaborators.

Nuevo equipo directivo, nueva editorial. Muchos de los mimbres que la habían llevado a ocupar un lugar destacado en el mundo de las publicaciones sobre nutrición y dietética humana han continuado siendo su principal activo: el apoyo de las sociedades científicas, en especial de la SENPE, los editores adjuntos y los revisores.
