Abstract:
This article examines the involvement of Lord Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, and to a lesser extent that of his wife, Princess Louise, in theatre both at Rideau Hall and elsewhere in Ottawa, and in their travels in Canada and the United States. Using Lorne's diary as well as newspapers and magazines of the day, it seeks to recreate the theatre life of the capital during the Lornes' tenure in Canada.

Abstract:
In Kantian Humility I argue that, for Kant, ignorance of things in themselves is ignorance of the intrinsic properties of substances, and that this is epistemic humility, rather than idealism: some aspects of reality, the intrinsic aspects, are beyond our epistemic grasp. The interpretation draws upon what Falkenstein takes to be ‘a novel and not implausible understanding of Kant's distinction between things in themselves and appearances’ which views it as a distinction between the intrinsic and the relational. He concedes that Kant frequently puts his distinction in just these terms, that I make ‘a strong textual case for it’, that it is ‘plausible and intriguing’ and that it may even be ‘correct, at least for a certain strand of Kant's thought’. He presumably also allows that this distinction between ‘things as they are in relation to other things and things as they are on their own’ is at base a metaphysical distinction, which makes no mention of how things look to us, appear to us or depend on our minds. I am pleased to find sympathy for this understanding of Kant's distinction in a review whose overall tenor is so critical.

Abstract:
Abstract‘Lower Old Red Sandstone’ deposits preserved by cauldron subsidence at Glen Coe, Scotland have hitherto lacked secure biostratigraphical age constraint. A sporomorph assemblage recovered from basal sediments of these deposits permits age determination, despite being highly carbonized. The sporomorph assemblage is correlated with the micrornatus-newportensis Sporomorph Assemblage Biozone, indicating a late early-early late Lochkovian age (early Devonian). Sporomorph assemblages from basal sediments of the ‘Lower Old Red Sandstone’ sequence at nearby Lorne, a suggested correlative of the Glen Coe deposits, are older (latest Pridoli-earliest Lochkovian age). However, the new biostratigraphical data do not preclude the possibility that the Glen Coe and Lorne deposits are lithological correlatives and the basal sediments are diachronous.

Abstract:
Lorne Peak Station, near Garston in Northern Southland is a 5650 ha station, which until recently, has been run as an extensive store sheep and beef property. Major constraints for this hill country property, like many others in the region, are long winters with occasional snowfall, low pasture growth rates, dry summers, unpredictable autumns and limited cash flow to develop and improve the land. The intensification of New Zealand's hill country farms is a critical aspect in ensuring financial viability. Since 2009, Lorne Peak has undergone a rigorous intensification program, initially aided by income produced from wintering dairy cows on the property. With careful selection of crops and pastures, farm profitability has increased, through selection of different stock breeds/classes and high utilisation of feed supply over the year. FARMAX® modelling software has been used retrospectively to analyse these changes, and compare it with the current scenario. The analysis clearly shows that the use of lucerne for grazing, fodder beet for beef production, subdivision and increasing soil fertility have been real game changers for Lorne Peak. A 292% increase in farm profit before tax is testament to this achievement. However, an increase of 26% for total farm working expenses, highlights the need for investment to be planned to build resilience into the farming operation. Keywords: hill country, intensification, dryland, lucerne, fodder beet, sheep, beef, FARMAX®, profitability

Full text
Abstract:
Participatory action combined interventionist research approaches can offer possibilities for community-based facilities and institutions attempting to re-engage with their communities and assert their presence. St. Cuthbert’s Church is a heritage-listed property, located on a major landholding, right in the heart of the summer tourist town of Lorne, on Melbourne’s peri-urban ‘sea change’ fringe. Its sloping hillside vantage offers spectacular views to the beach and Bass Strait, beyond. The congregation, however, is aging, while the broader community is increasingly secular. In response to these circumstances, the Church is looking to assert its relevance with the procurement of a community centre to be erected on the property. Using an interventionist research approach, with a professional facilitator in ‘participatory action design’, it was found that while both residents and visitors to Lorne were favourably disposed to the idea of a community centre, it was also clear that the locus of power that needed to realise this objective lay outside the congregation’s control. A conclusion of this research is that community-based organisations may have to pro-actively engage in professional marketing and prepare business plans, as well as engage in substantial political lobbying both within and external to the Church, if the project is to progress and succeed.

Abstract:
Wildfire evacuations disrupt people’s lives, create an additional hazard for emergency responders and residents, and are expensive to execute. Alternatives to evacuation are used in Australia and a few jurisdictions in the United States. Numerous studies have examined the “stay and defend” option during a wildfire in Australia, and evacuation alternatives have also been examined in the US. However, evacuation alternatives have not yet received scholarly attention in Canada. This study focused on the community of Mt. Lorne, Yukon, and explored residents’ perceptions of alternatives to evacuation due to wildfires, their evacuation intentions, and factors that influenced their intentions. Focus group participants planned to stay on their property despite a wildfire evacuation order because of the perceived safety of their property, and concerns about evacuating including leaving their property unprotected, losing harvested meat or other food stocks due to spoiling, and not knowing what to do with sled dog teams or livestock. However, some of these residents lacked the knowledge about how to stay on their property safely.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The ~75 Ma Mount Lorne monzodiorite stock has been studied paleomagnetically to estimate the tectonic motion of the northern Canadian Cordillera since the Late Cretaceous. The stock is one of several paleomagnetic studies currently underway at the University of Windsor Paleomagnetic Laboratory which are funded by the Lithoprobe - Slave northern Cordillera Lithospheric Evolution (SNORCLE) Project. Al-in-hornblende geobarometry and plagioclase-amphibole geothermometry data suggest that the stock has not been tilted since emplacement but does provide evidence that the stock has a normal fault trending north-south through its centre with the east side uplifted relatively by ~1000 m. Paleomagnetic measurements from 12 of 19 granitoid sites yield a well-defined characteristic remanent magnetization direction that is south-southwest and up, and a further six sites yield a direction that is north-northeast and down. Data from a mafic dike yield a negative contact test, suggesting that the dike is coeval with the stock. Combining the 18 granitic site mean characteristic remanent magnetization directions yields a paleopole at 69.1°W, 78.3°N (dp = 4.1°, dm = 4.5°) which suggests that the host Stikine Terrane has been translated poleward by 10.5 ± 3.5° (1170 ± 390 km) and rotated clockwise by 57 ± 11° relative to the North American craton between 75 and 50 Ma. Except for the estimate from the nearby coeval Carmacks Group volcanic rocks, the Mount Lorne estimate is consistent with all other paleomagnetic results within the Stikine Terrane. These latter estimates are also consistent with plate-tectonic models that suggest the Pacific oceanic plates had an increased velocity northwards during the Late Cretaceous.

Abstract:
AbstractPalynomorphs from the Stonehaven Group indicate a late Wenlock to early Ludlow age. This is older than the currently accepted Pridoli age based on fish and arthropods. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. A previous correlative of the Stonehaven Group has been the Old Red Sandstone of Kerrera, Argyll. However, palynological assemblages from both Kerrera and the adjacent succession at Oban are in fact younger than that from Stonehaven in being of latest Silurian to earliest Devonian age. The palynomorphs from Kerra and Oban lie beneath the important geochronological tie-point of the Lorne Lavas and suggest that the Silurian-Devonian boundary is older than currently accepted.

Abstract:
A large caprellid amphipod recently discovered at a salmon farm in the Lynne of Lorne near Oban, Scotland, has been identified as Caprella mutica, a species indigenous to north-east Asia. The caprellid population appears to have become established in the last four years at the site with a high abundance of animals occurring year round on the farm nets, mooring ropes and on artificial experimental structures located <10 m from the fish farm. This paper briefly describes C. mutica found in Scotland. Application of Chapman & Carlton's criteria for determining introduced species suggests that C. mutica is non-indigenous to the area.
