Le patronyme « Liebrich » est loin d’être inconnu en Alsace, notamment en Alsace Bossue, où cette famille, originaire de Hesse, forme une véritable dynastie de pasteurs luthériens du XVIIIe au XXe siècle. This chapter focuses on Lenny Kohm’s visit to Norma Kassi’s family hunting camp in Crow Flats, a vast wetland area north of Old Crow, Yukon. Kassi invited him to visit in May 1988 to take pictures for the slide show and to learn about their lives on the land. While there, Kohm often accompanied and photographed Norma’s brother Danny Kassi and others engaged in subsistence and cultural activities. The chapter includes many different perspectives on Kohm and his photography, including stories shared by Norma Kassi and Lorraine Netro, both citizens of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. These stories demonstrate how Kohm found a political cause and formed deep personal connections in Gwich’in country.

Abstract This chapter examines the lives and careers of Ed and Lorraine Warren, as well as the cinematic depictions of their cases. The chapter begins with a biography of the Warrens assembled using their own writings, archival materials, and interviews with the authors and paranormal investigators who met them. There is evidence that the Warrens began to emphasize their roles as “demonologists,” rather than ghost investigators, in the 1970s in response to The Exorcist. The rest of the chapter reviews their cases in chronological order while discussing any films inspired by the cases. Cases discussed include the legend of the demon-possessed “Annabelle” doll, the haunting of the Perron family that became the basis of The Conjuring, the Amityville Horror case in Long Island, and the so-called “demon-murder trial” of Arne Johnson.

In 2017, thirty years after Lenny Kohm first visited the Arctic, Lorraine Netro organized a caribou dinner and screening of The Last Great Wilderness slide show in the community hall in Old Crow, Yukon. This chapter describes how Vuntut Gwitchin responded to the show. Their questions afterwards addressed issues ranging from climate change to alliance-building with environmentalists and the role of Vuntut Gwitchin in the Arctic Refuge struggle. They also asked what happened to Kohm’s other photographs (not just those in the slide show) taken in and around Old Crow. Delving into the questions they posed, the chapter highlights how particular photographs—including Kohm’s at Norma Kassi’s family hunting camp along Zelma Lake and Subhankar Banerjee’s of polar bear denning sites along Beaufort Sea—can be seen as historic records of Arctic lands before they were so dramatically impacted by catastrophic climate change. Finally, the chapter explains how the author eventually found Kohm’s other Arctic slides and had them digitized and returned to the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.

Catherine Baudoche’s versatile patronage illustrates that, in Metz, female performance fed broader currents of cultural patronage and financial agency. This chapter develops a multifaceted portrait through the biographies of Catherine and her stepmother, Catherine Gronnaix, revealing a family history that positioned these women at a nexus of social and economic power. Through ceremonial practice and entertainments, these two Catherines forged connections with local and trans-regional elites that reinforced those created by the Saint Catherine jeu. Moreover, at multiple points in their lives – early childhood, youth, marriage, widowhood, old age – the Catherines took part in financial transactions that put them at the center of performative legal acts. Catherine Gronnaix, for example, enacted her vassalage to the dukes of Lorraine through a combination of spoken oath and physical sealing. Such performances served as a sign and representation of identity that was affirmed through public rite. Personal wealth enabled the financial power that supported acts of dramatic and liturgical patronage. Yet economic ownership and agency also positioned the Catherines to represent themselves in seals, legal language, ceremonies, and household performances that established them as full participants in the Messine legal and political spheres.

Wight defined international legitimacy as ‘the collective judgment of international society about rightful membership of the family of nations’. International legitimacy derived mainly from prescription and dynasticism, the customary rule of hereditary monarchs, until the American and French Revolutions instituted the popular and democratic principle of the consent of the governed. The increasing reliance on popular politics led to the triumph of national self-determination in the 1919 peace settlement, with certain exceptions, notably the decision not to conduct a plebiscite in Alsace-Lorraine. New principles, such as territorial contiguity and integrity, influenced decisions about the legitimacy of the frontiers of the states formed from the breakup of European colonial empires after the Second World War. India, for example, referred to the principle of territorial integrity to justify the acquisition of Hyderabad and Goa. Critics of colonial arrangements have regarded them as illegitimate and unacceptable by definition. A state seeking independence via secession can succeed in its bid for self-determination only if it can gain sufficient external support. Therefore Biafra’s bid failed while that of Bangladesh succeeded. Communist principles of legitimacy emphasize the self-determination of the proletariat under the guidance of the Communist party. Legitimacy principles are subject to pragmatic constraints, and in practice governments generally recognize whoever controls state power.

The play is set in the post–World War II era, but many of its scenes and actions relate back to real estate practices that began at the turn of the century and that continued to evolve into the midcentury and to some degree beyond. During those decades, housing development and finance increased dramatically in scale, professionalization, and standardization. But in their concern for their predominantly white consumers’ preferences for segregation, real estate developers, brokers, financial institutions, and finally governmental agencies adopted standard practices that excluded African Americans from many housing opportunities and that then reinforced white preferences for housing segregation. Many seemingly minor features of the play reflect the way that African Americans had been sidelined in the earlier decades’ evolving real estate practices—not just the family’s overcrowded apartment, but also more subtle cues, such as the source of the initial funds for the new house, the methods for its finance, and the legal background of the white homeowners’ effort to discourage the purchase. This essay pinpoints these and other small clues, and describes how standardizing real estate practices dating from the turn of the century effectively crowded out African American consumers like the Youngers, with consequences that we continue to observe in modern patterns of urban segregation.
