Abstract:
Das Lorscher Arzneibuch stammt aus dem frühen Mittelalter und ist eine Handschrift aus der Zeit von Karl dem Grossen. Das einzigartige Werk entstand im Kloster Lorsch, liegt heute in der Bamberger Staatsbibliothek. Das Buch enthält rund 500 verschiedene Rezepturen, für die damalige Zeit auch ganz neue. Aufgrund seiner Einzigartigkeit wurde es in die Liste des UNESCO-Weltdokumentenerbes aufgenommen, so wie auch die Reste der Benediktinerabtei in Lorsch ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe darstellen.

Abstract:
Im mittelalterlichen System der «artes» nahm die Medizin nur den Rang einer «mechanischen» Kunst ein. Diese Degradierung der Heilkunde wurde durch vielfältige Kritik am ärztlichen Beruf gefördert. Christliche Autoren argumentierten, die Medizin schöpfe aus heidnischen Quellen. Später stützten sich die Kritiker gerade auf antike Autoren wie Cato oder Plinius, welche die Notwendigkeit des Arztberufs bestritten hatten. Vielerorts galten Krankheiten als Gottesstra-fen, ihre Heilung als Anmassung. Verteidigungsschriften wie das Lorscher Arzneibuch des 8. Jahrhunderts lassen weitere Kritikpunkte der Gegner rekonstruieren. Auch im islamischen Kulturkreis waren die Arzte vielfach Angriffen ausgesetzt. Im 12. Jahrhundert zeigte sich im Westen auch Unzufriedenheit mit dem neuen, an der Universität ausgebildeten Arzttypus, der sich auf die scholastische Tradition berief und in den Augen der Gegner die Praxis vernachlässigte. Dieser intellektuelle ((Arzt- Philosoph» wurde auch von konservativeren Kollegen wie Guido von Arezzo angefeindet.

Abstract:
The topic of health and physical activity is an important subject of research and teaching in sport scholarship. The present article focuses on the concepts of health and disease of the Mesoamerican Maya, Christians in the late antiquity and the early medieval period, and traditional Chinese medicine. This cultural-historical approach is based on the social history and particular living conditions which formed the Maya, the Christian and the Chinese people. Key sources include the holy book of the Maya, Popol Vuh, the Lorscher Arzneibuch, and the Chinese Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor. Although the concepts of health and physical activity differ greatly, they combined the same element: they always include a theory of life as a whole; they are always a contemporary construction based on the particular living conditions, thinking and belief; and they are always a means of stabilizing authority and social order.
