Abstract:
The main theme of this work is analysis blending of sport and international relations. This relationship is discussed on the example of Olympic Games in Moscow and Los Angeles. These Olympic Games met with collective boycott of the Western or more preciesly the Eastern block. Boycotts of both of these Olympics Games were associated with the current political situation and with the culmination of the Cold War. The Soviet Union invaded to Afghanistan in 1980.Significant part of the Western world responded to this invasion by announcing a boycott of the olympic games in Moscow. The olympic games in Los Angeles were held four years later. Most of the countries of the Eastern block decided to boycott the games beacause of the fear for the safety of their sport expeditions. The theoretical part of this work describes the main events between sport and internetional relations in the 20th and the 21th century. The practical part is devoted only to olympic games in Moscow and Los Angeles, It is especially focused on the period before these Olympics Games. During these periods it has been decided about the boycott of the games at the high level policy. Final thesis, which is based on this diploma work, is the fact, that the sport is frequently used tool of the foreign policy and it is not very effective.

Abstract:
During the past decade (1984-1994), Australia experienced its worst recession since the depression of the 30's, followed by a no-growth period and an unemployment rate hovering around nine per cent. The awareness of Commonwealth and State Governments of the need for specific policies to stimulate new ventures and support small and medium enterprises (SME's), was increased by a range of reviews which resulted in a variety of initiatives. However, two key national initiatives, licensed Management and Investment Companies (MIC's) and the Second Board Stock Market, which aimed at making access to funds easier for new ventures, failed to provide sustained financial support to new innovative firms. Small businesses in Australia account for some 80 per cent of all businesses and 50 per cent of employment in the private sector. While many factors contribute to the successful establishment and growth of new businesses, a key factor is the availability of and access to affordable finance. The major objective of this study was to identify key success/failure factors in new venture creation and to review in detail the rise and fall of the Second Board Stock Market (1984-1992) - arguably one of the most significant Government initiatives during the 80's to provide access to equity funds. A survey of Melbourne companies listed on the Second Board was to provide valuable information on the success/failure of the Second Board Stock Market and to illuminate desirable Government initiatives meeting SME's survival needs.

Abstract:

This interdisciplinary thesis begins with a 1981 birthday gift of art, music, photography, and words presented to the citizenry of Los Angeles for their bicentennial titled The City of Our Lady Queen of the Angels. The installation was created by Anthony Duquette and Angelino artisans and depicted a court of giant Archangels presided over by their queen, the patron angel of the city. The installation was accompanied by a poem written for Los Angeles by Ray Bradbury, set to music by Garth Hudson, and preserved through photography by James Chen. I reconstruct the fragments of Bradbury's poem and prepare them as spell for transportation as a Los Angeles specific ritual performance. I document and then use the installation and poem as the inspiration for my own reinterpretation of the 1981 work through music, words and choreography titled A Dance in the Green Garden of the Queen of the Angels. My oral interpretation of the poem defines its structure, and composer David Johnson creates a score for the work, which I perform and record with instrumental quartet. I choreograph, cast, and costume the resulting Queen of the Angels Sonata as a ritual dance, and the piece is performed at CSULA’s International Day of Dance Concert, 2016. I then create a film production team to digitally record and edit the entire dance concert as a feature length film, and its seven individual dances as short film excerpts, that are distributed globally on YouTube.

Watson, Jonathan Leslie. "The Los Angeles NAACP, 1914-1949." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.420499.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the development of the Los Angeles branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during the first half the twentieth century. It charts the progress of the branch from its founding in 1914, to the departure of its fifth president in 1949. The pwpose of this thesis is to re-evaluate the role of the Los Angeles NAACP within two contexts: the history of twentieth century black Los Angeles and the history of the NAACP. In the former, the branch has long been considered a force of moderate conservatism within the black community, in the latter, the role of branches has been viewed as an issue of minor importance in charting the development of the organisation. By focussing on the branch, this thesis challenges these constructions. In the local context, it argues that the Los Angeles NAACP was less conservative and more pro-active than historians of black Los Angeles have given it credit for. Further, the history of the branch demonstrates a continuity of activism and protest in the city unmatched by any of its rivals. Within the context of the NAACP, the history of the branch helps construct a better understanding of how the organisation worked as a national network; it charts how the local branch responded to national policy, but also how the concerns and character of black Los Angeles framed the branch's activism and conception of itself within the national organisation. The thesis is divided into five chapters: the first examines the foundation of the branch; chapter two explores the impact of the ''New Negro" philosophy on branch activism in the 1920s; the third chapter details the branch's response to the Great Depression; chapter four charts the response of the branch to the challenges brought by the Second World War and chapter five explores the divisive conflict over leadership and communism that nearly destroyed the branch in 1948 and 1949

O'Hara, Christine Edstrom. "Revisiting Eden : the Olmsted Brothers' ecological plans for Los Angeles, 1914-1931." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31295.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecological planning relies on a keen awareness of relationships between biophysical and social processes, then uses this knowledge for decision making in accommodating for human needs. The value of this planning process allows for design intervention while also ensuring a sustained use of the landscape, with these insights blending skill and artistry into place-making. In the 1960s, environmental concerns galvanized a generation of landscape architects who first codified ecological planning as a rationale for decisions with environmental stewardship. While this is the accepted canon, in the early 20th century during a period of experimentation and exploration, the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm was using ecological principles as foundations for landscape architecture practice. This thesis challenges current discourse and accepted history, presenting evidence that the Olmsted Brothers' work in the 1920s predated many modern ecological theories and applications, and is an important addition to the historiography of ecological planning. This thesis largely focuses on Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. as the central historical figure, offering a more in-depth understanding of the evolution of the firm, and fills the gap of the Olmsted legacy. As the children of Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr., Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. (1870-1957) along with his brother John Charles Olmsted (1852-1920) co-founded the Olmsted Brothers and created one of the most prolific landscape architecture practices, developing projects in all aspects of landscape design. The Olmsted Brothers' work in California accounts for over 200 projects, and ranks among the highest number of their 5000 designs developed in the United States. In the early 20th century, the city of Los Angeles offered significant ecological, cultural, and technological challenges for the firm, with the city's unbridled urbanization and proliferate use of water and automobility. Rich in solutions, the firm's built and proposed designs over the course of 20 years revealed the discipline of landscape architecture in its richest and most scalar form. From small scale gardens, residential communities, park and parkway systems, to open space and watershed planning, the Olmsted Brothers created public spaces that worked in relationship to the ecology of the region during a critical juncture in the history of regional planning in Southern California. A range of methods were utilized in this thesis. Primary data provided both qualitative and quantitative material for study and was extracted from letters, reports and writing, drawings, photos, plans and maps. Over 20,000 primary documents, written by the firm's principals, provided the basis for analysis, and in a new way, this thesis interprets not only the written documents, but related construction documents developed from 1914 - 1931. As part of its data collection, an original contribution of this study is a comprehensive corpus of Olmsted Brothers source material from their work in Los Angeles. Methodologies sought to modify these documents into a spatial understanding of their work through digital analysis and re-creation of designs. The Olmsted Brothers' design solutions provide insights into today's ongoing concerns about water management, sustainable urban planning, and multifunctional landscapes. Their design proposals solved multiple problems with the design, accounting for not only vast geography, but complex cultural and natural systems within it. The value of their ideas reflects landscape architecture solutions as hybrid, dynamic, and strategic, offering 21st century practitioners paradigms in an ever-changing ecology.

Waldow, Jennie. "Beyond Boring Art: Humorous Critique in the Work of John Baldessari, 1966–1974." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/116.

Abstract:
Visually, Baldessari’s art mirrors the schoolroom chart, the cinematic storyboard, the Surrealist collage, the sensationalist graphics of the tabloid, and the grid format of the textbook. Black and white photography, performance, collage, bright prints, film, drawing, and painting: Baldessari has done it all. The artist has consistently demonstrated an inventiveness and sense of play in his work, and it is unlikely that he would stick to any one mode of artmaking for an extended period of time. It is probable that the explicit critique of contemporary Conceptualists of the text paintings mellowed because Baldessari had moved on to new questions. While he continues to examine the trope of the artistic outsider despite his commercial success, it is always with a wink. As Baldessari’s use of his own image in Portrait (Self) demonstrates, he has encouraged his audience to interrogate any artistic self-representation as a purposeful construct. Unlike the majority of his fellow Conceptualists, Baldessari’s serious goals are couched in a selfmocking attitude and in the colorful, playful style he has made his own.

Abstract:
Our approach to the notion of dysfunction favors a formal analysis. The word corruption will never illustrate crime fiction. It will be used in its philosophical meaning as defined by Aristotle to describe a system which goes from the single to the plural before it finally breaks off. Along the L. A. Quartet, a narrative progression leads the single but divided ‘I' to a polyphony of voices. The Quartet experiments at turns the narrative modes which characterised the history of crime fiction, from the Private eye to the Police procedural. Those changes go hand in hand with a tranformation of the investigator. The deconstruction of the text leads to the erosion of its medium. It is paralleled with the numerous intradiegetic dysfunctions which result from the crises of social, family and sexual reference points. The death of women, infanticides, and incestuous relationships are patterns emerging from the loss of unity due to the dysfunction of the Symbolic. Ellroy's characters trangress laws as the writing gets free. In twisting the language, it inscribes the text in a literary transgression leading the reader to a subversive exeprience

Abstract:
In 1983, the report A Nation at Risk launched a national education reform movement to make academic excellence the states’ education policies top priority. California became deeply involved in this movement, particularly in the subject area of history. In 1988, the new History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools, adopted by the State Board of Education, made history the focus of the social studies curriculum. While cultural wars were dividing the country, California drafted a framework aiming to combine academic excellence with multiculturalism. In 1998, California set academic standards and goals of achievement for schools. From then on, schools were held accountable for their students’ performance. Contrary to what reformers had initially planned, standardized testing brought memorization of discrete facts back to the history classroom, to the detriment of critical thinking and social participation. By focusing on the case of Los Angeles Unified School District, we examine the academic excellence movement within California’s political and cultural hyperpluralism. We single out the successive steps of the reform process from the state level to the schools to emphasize several aspects of California’s education policy: the political goals and institutional culture supporting the reform, the complexity of implementation at the district level, and the contradictory demands made on teachers

Bevan, R. "Screening the L.A.P.D. : cinematic representations of policing and discourses of law enforcement in Los Angeles, 1948-2003." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1322452/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines cinematic representations of the L.A.P.D. within the context of discourses of law enforcement in Los Angeles and contends that these feature films constitute a significant strand within such discourse. This contention, which is based upon the various identifiable ways in which the films engage with contemporary issues, acknowledges that the nature of such engagement is constrained by the need to produce a commercially viable fictional entertainment. In four main chronological segments, I argue that it is also influenced by the increasing ethnic and gendered diversity of film-makers, by their growing freedom to screen even the most sensitive issues and by the changing racial and spatial politics of Los Angeles. In the 1940s and 1950s, the major studios were prepared to illustrate some disputed matters, such as wire-tapping, but represented L.A.P.D. officers as white paragons of virtue and ignored their fractious relationships with minority communities. In the aftermath of the Watts riot of 1965, racial tensions were more difficult to ignore and, under a more liberal censorship regime, film-makers―led by two independent African American directors―began to depict instances of police racism and brutality. Between the major L.A.P.D. anti-gang initiative of 1988 and the Rodney King beating of 1991, two films were released which tackled the inter-related issues of gang violence and the controversial nature of the police response. In the febrile atmosphere of the time, each found itself at the centre of local discourses of law enforcement. Then, in the wake of the King beating, Los Angeles and its police force endured the 1992 riots, the trial of O.J. Simpson and the Rampart scandal. These highly publicised events, which gave the L.A.P.D. a world-wide reputation for racism, brutality and corruption, also informed several movies in which the misdeeds of filmic policemen outstripped even the worst excesses of their real-life counterparts.

Abstract:
Angela da Foligno’s Liber is a fundamental text for the scholar of Women Mystics between the XIIIth and the XIVth century in Italy and all over Europe, and it has been chosen in my research because of its originality, with refer of its feminine and franciscan essence. Angela teaches to the italian hagiographic tradition the internal point of view of the holy woman, who becomes the teller of her both ordinary and extraordinary experiences. After giving references about the religious and social historical universe in evolution during the XIIth century, my research proceeds with a linguistic and rhetorical analysis based upon the Liber. I have been searching in Angela’s text and in contemporary italian feminine hagiography the sensory metaphor of “tasting”. That kind of metaphor has an ancient memory and, thanks to the Origene’s studies - the Christian Father of the IIIrd century - we can easily recognize it already in the Bible; Origene identifies the sensory metaphor as a rhetoric system, able to exemplify the God learning process of soul. Theory of “spiritual senses”, theory of vision and rhetoric, evolving from the IIIrd to the XIIIth century, are the theological and linguistic heritage of our feminine and franciscan literature. Inside of that, the metaphor of “tasting” moves and changes, therefore becoming the favourite way of mystics to represent the contact of their souls with God.

Abstract:
info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Quiney, Linda J. ""Assistant angels": Canadian women as voluntary aid detachment nurses during and after the Great War, 1914-1930." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6196.

Abstract:
This study recovers the history of Canada's Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses, or VADs, from their creation as a reserve of emergency auxiliary nursing assistants in 1914 under the aegis of the St. John Ambulance Association, to their demobilization and resettlement into peacetime civilian life to 1930. Canada's VAD plan was modelled on a British scheme initiated in 1909 in anticipation of war in Europe. Intended to supplement the domestic military medical services, the role of the Canadian VADs evolved with the advent of the war into fulltime nursing assistance. The research for the study is based on archival sources, including diaries, letters and pre-recorded narratives of VADs who served in Canada and overseas, official government documents, and those of the St. John Ambulance and Red Cross in Canada and Britain, who were responsible for the VAD organisation. In addition to manuscript sources of individuals involved in the VAD movement, the published records from contemporary books, memoirs, journals and newspapers were examined. This research permitted the identification of 808 Canadian VADs, out of an estimated 2,000 primarily young, single, middle-class Anglo-Protestant women, who served as nursing assistants, but also as ambulance drivers and support personnel. The study demonstrates the evolution of Canadian VADs as an extension of the nineteenth century voluntarist traditions of the women's movement. Through patriotic and maternalist ideology, VAD service was legitimised as a form of voluntary active service for women, equating to masculine military service. Excluded from Canada's military hospitals overseas, VADs served in military convalescent hospitals at home, and British military hospitals abroad. As volunteers, they challenged the professional aspirations of Canada's qualified graduate nurses, motivating them to seek regulation of the qualifications for nursing practice, and elevating the educational standards. Volunteering as a VAD offered Canadian women a singular opportunity for active war service. Previously overshadowed by British VAD experience, the study of Canada's VADs restores a dynamic organisation to the history of women and women's work, as well as contributing to scholarship in Canadian medical and military history.

Abstract:
Brown v. Board of Education (1954) was a significant court case fought to provide equal educational opportunities for African-American students. Though the case was fought with good intentions, there may have been unintended consequences that occurred due to the policy implementation. The purpose of this research was to explore the policy, its implementation, and assess the extent to which the goals of the original policy were met. This study used a mixed-methods approach and was set within one large urban school district. The qualitative portion of the study included interviews with a small group of educators who were directly impacted by Brown and its implementation. The data from both the interviews and the selected focus schools indicated that the initial goals of Brown, equal educational opportunities and integrated schooling, were not met. This research provided information from key areas that may serve as a guide to help make future policy implementation successful.

The aim of this thesis is to discuss how the gender issue is represented in literature by pointing out differences and similarities between Clarice Lispector’s A Cidade Sitiada (1949) and Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus (1984). In A Cidade Sitiada (1949), Lucrécia is a "beleaguered" woman; she is not presented to the reader as the subject of her story, but, rather, an object. She is a foreigner in her world, with what she does not interact, surrounded, exiled by city walls. In her novel Carter shows the process of modernization, love, the perspective of the marginalized, human relations and female freedom. To build the effect of liberation, the author frees herself from closed environments that were part of the settings of her previous novels and opts for an exterior space. And she also chooses as protagonist Fevers, a woman with wings, a powerful image of liberation and female transformation and aware of what she represents. The discoveries of the protagonists are set in the process of social modernization of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. While in England the woman is born with wings and free, in Brazil she remains trapped in patriarchal society. Lastly, this research paper intends to compare the way in which Clarice Lispector and Angela Carter can discuss the gender issue in literature and break through the lines of patriarchal society. From this point of view, the intention of this thesis is to confront the construction of the female characters in the works and discuss the process of modernization under the eyes of the protagonists in English and Brazilian literatures.
CNPq: 142328/2013-8

Abstract:
This paper attempts to provide a cost-benefit analysis of the economic and social effects of hosting the Olympic Games. I provide an overview of the economic and social impacts of the Games and analyze their effects. I focus the economic effects of the Games on tourism, trade, corporate sponsorship and the sale of television rights. I also look at the social effects of the Games on infrastructure and employment. Finally I assess why the Olympics remain an appealing venture for cities, despite evidence that demonstrates how they produce more actual harm than good for the host city. In addition, I provide predictions for two alternative directions that the Olympics could take in the future: to either continue in the current trend of immense growth and commercialization, or alternatively, implement a new Olympic bidding process that establishes stricter criteria for candidate cities.

Abstract:

A synchronic examination of the fiction of the guatemalan novelist miguel angel asturias emphasizes its close relatioship with pre-columbian mythe and religions and draws light on the criteria which led the novelist to merge pre-columbian myths and rituals into his own works of fiction and on the way in which he singles out some of them and brings them up to date, so as to create from them fresh myths of his own. The writer is in search of a society, a world of harmony, which has long since been distroyed and forsaken, a world represented by the way of life of agricultural indian tribal communities. This way of life is based on the myth of indian corn and the rites it entails are recreated by the novelist in his fiction, using pre-columbian texts as a point of departure. More often than not, where this harmony breaks down is with the intrusion of western civilization, its values and its modes of thought, expressed in the form of archetypes drived from western traditions or developed from them: judas, maladron, the green tempter. . . This breakdown is connected with the fall, following the original sin in an infernal barren world dominated by the forces of evil typically embodied in the maya god tohil or the half-cast devil candaga. Similarly, asturias pursues his quest for the bygone harmonibus society through experiences met with in the western world and reinserted into the central american context through language and a modernization of the quetzalcoatl myth. The dual origin of the novelist's inspiration thus becomes evident through his choice of language and form of expression, which serve to integrate western experiences into the central american world (occasionally a somewhat artificial literary process), as if the half-cast was eagerly demanding recognition and wanted to rediscover his roots. Thus by virtue of asturias's choice of sources and masterly handling of language, his works transcend the central american world and attain a more universal meaning

Abstract:
If Charles Bukowski never formulated a theory presiding over his work, nor made explicit metrical research, and never claimed any literary school, this rejection of any form of literary elitism is, in fact, a paradoxical poetics, which seeks to break down the barriers between writing and orality, between the work and the body that produced it, between the work and the life of its author. A poetics of presence is carried by a utopia where the boundary between world and language disappears, to put the poet's body at the center of the literary process. The poetic writing refuses its share of absence, that of the body and the voice, that of the moment of writing, to become almost a performance. The result is a deceptive transparency, the clarity of which is so dazzling that, rather than exposing it, it conceals its depth between the lines of the text

In fact the hierarchy of gender, race and class black drove black women to the border of events, often forging true facts, subduing and silencing the afrofemales voices. Accordingly, we demonstrate that oppression due to race, gender and social class influence the existential condition of the authors who through traumatic experiences have massacred their own identities. In order to rescue the lost identity and subjectivity, Carolina Maria de Jesus and Maya Angelou write and (re) construct a self that even fragmented by the vicissitudes of life is able to express their scream through writing. Above all, the intersectionality of oppressions becomes the major theme of the works in question, and can be understood as a confrontational and tense social reality that is either transformed

Rites of passage, myths, heroic and initiation journeys are common in carter's fiction. Several literary genres (utopia, dystopia, gothic, picaresque, science fiction, fantastic) help carter to update and subvert those themes, thus highlighting the ideological content of myth, as defined by barthes. The adventures of carter's young heroes follow traditional initiation patterns (separation, initiation, return) and take place in predictable symbolical places. Physical and psychological monsters abound. Monsters illustrate relations of power between adolescents and terrible mother and father figures on the one hand, and between young men and women on the other hand. Dominating the other is the main issue in these meetings ; it involes violent behaviour, sexual abuse, occasionally cannibalism. Such confrontations are also rites of passage for carter's heroes, where what is really at stake is acknowledging and accepting otherness, especially the radical difference between the sexes. Ideology and mythology finally merge when the feminist issue of the oppression of women in patriarchal societies parallells the oppression of the poor by those in power. Yet, there is a marked evolution over the years. Carter's early heroes' attempts to dominate and destroy the other gradually evolve, turning into a quest for one's own identity. After the predatory and aggressive heroes of her first novels, discovering oneself becomes the priority of later ones, which helps them to accept the other and culminates in a joyful sensuous celebration of life. This new tolerance changes the way carter's heroes see the other and eliminates the potential threat of otherness. As others are not seen as monsters any more, the heroic pattern is later abandoned in carter's fiction

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
The intellectual production of feminism questioned the representations and social roles of gender and contributed to an evolution of a critical perspective towards the oppression suffered by women. In this sense, this work intends to make a critical reflection about the memoirs of the black writers Carolina Maria de Jesus and Maya Angelou, in their respective books: Diário de Bitita and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. For that we raised questions concerning the plot and emphasize the black protagonists´ peculiar course towards awareness of a reality built around unequal powers. So, we first consider the black people condition and underline the black women situation before and during slavery time. Secondly, we talk about the confessional literature focalizing the diary and memoir forms in order to make evident their similarities and differences in the confessional universe. At last we attempt to a work of analysis of the books where we point out important items and discuss the characters´ course towards self-acceptance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I argue that Douglas Sirk was attempting to dissolve the boundaries of the cinematic medium by assimilating elements of avant-garde art, architecture and design into the colour, composition and settings of many of his most popular studio produced films. While the exaggerated artifice of this directors formal style has often been remarked upon, it has yet to be interpreted in the light of his detailed cognisance of the major art and architectural movements of the period, which include German Expressionist painting and Machine Age Modernist design. This is a lacuna that my thesis should at least partially fill, since I have shown that Sirks highly self conscious visual approach was deeply influenced by the artistic debates that were taking place in Europe during the 1920s and 30s and in America after World War II. To my mind, there is no doubt that this directors syncretic mise-en-scène was the result of an interdisciplinary, transnational dialogue, and I have sought to illuminate some of the social, philosophical and political meanings that it seems to convey.

Tiphine, Lucas. Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSEN009/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In a context of traf8ic networks saturation related to urbanisation acceleration, thisresearch is aimed at contributing to the scienti8ic debate on this issue by building a model to describe dynamic pedestrians’ physical distances regulation behaviours in public places. The urban dimension of Edward T. Hall’s theory of proxemics is taken as an initial inspiration. This author argues that a correlation exists between the organisation of space at the macro level of Society and the micro level of individual behaviours. It leads him to a synthetic distinction between ‘contact cultures’ and ‘non-contact cultures’. The former tends to prefer smaller distances at all scales of space organisation compared to the latter. This hypothesis is considered seriously in the research. Nonetheless, Hall’s macroculturalist anthropological area distinction (e.g.: the ‘Arab World’ = ‘contact culture’) isnot relevant anymore in the urban globalization era. Therefore, a new ‘micromacro’theory, based on 4 macro orientations expected to have an influence on micro behaviours,is proposed: equality between urban citizens, individualisation, relative urbanity and urban planning regulation. Two other scalar correlation theories of spatial relations description are also tested. One,called ‘micromeso’, is based on Roger Barker’s behaviour setting theory. It states thatproxemical behaviours are correlated with intermediate units related to a specific placeand time such as ‘the subway at peak hours’. The other theory, called ‘micro’, states thatany form of scalar correlation is an ecological fallacy. Accordingly, the description processhas to remain at the very level of physical distance relations between individuals. These different theories are tested empirically in Delhi, Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyowhich all answer differently to the macro orientations of the micromacro theory. Behaviours inside the metro and outside of it are observed (micromeso theory). In each condition, similar levels of spatial competition for places are taken into consideration (micro theory). The results lead to conclude that traffic relations between pedestrians are best describedwhen considered cumulatively as micro > micromeso > micromacro by order of efficiency. Eventually, I defend the thesis that urban dwellers should debate of traffic relationshipsmicro conditions improvements rather than focusing on micromacro and micromeso explanations of the networks breakdowns which can be found for instance in the competition promoted between individuals on civil behaviours
