Abstract:
The Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, a domicile and hospital for Union veterans of the Civil War, opened west of Los Angeles in 1888 on land donated by real-estate developers. Barrett Villa Tract, a development of small plots later renamed Sawtelle, was established outside the south gate of the Soldiers’ Home. There veterans bought homes where they could “live out” and enjoy family life while continuing to avail themselves of the services of the Pacific Branch. Sawtelle incorporated as a city in 1906 but consolidated with Los Angeles in 1922. Issues of Pacific Branch members’ votes, behavior, and community leadership mark Sawtelle’s history. Union veterans played a significant role in the development of West Los Angeles.

Abstract:
Myth hides nothing: its function is to distort.—Roland BarthesIn Los Angeles, California, the home of the nation's second largest Federal Theatre Project (FTP), a group of FTP artists spent over a year developingThe Sun Rises in the West, a popular and critically well-received but forgotten play about the Dust Bowl migration and its effects on California's agricultural valleys. The play was mounted by the Southwest Theatre Unit (SWTU), an experimental branch of the Los Angeles Federal Theatre Project that worked as a collective to produce plays independently of the FTP's more mainstream endeavors. The SWTU attracted ample publicity during the latter half of the 1930s for its experimental, politically charged material, but because the group's artistic record has been buried for decades in government and university archives, much critical work remains to be done on its contributions to theatre history. This essay seeks to remedy this gap with a brief sketch of the SWTU as an avant-garde force in Los Angeles and an analysis of the SWTU's original play,The Sun Rises in the West.

Abstract:
Abstract Geologic data suggest that the Coachella Valley segment of the southern San Andreas fault (southern California, USA) is past its average recurrence time period. At its northern edge, this right-lateral fault segment branches into the Mission Creek and Banning strands of the San Andreas fault. Depending on how rupture propagates through this region, there is the possibility of a throughgoing rupture that could lead to the channeling of damaging seismic energy into the Los Angeles Basin. The fault structures and potential rupture scenarios on these two strands differ significantly, which highlights the need to determine which strand provides a more likely rupture path and the circumstances that control this rupture path. In this study, we examine the effect of different assumptions about fault geometry and initial stress pattern on the dynamic rupture process to test multiple rupture scenarios and thus investigate the most likely path(s) of a rupture that starts on the Coachella Valley segment. We consider three types of fault geometry based on the Southern California Earthquake Center Community Fault Model, and we create a three-dimensional finite-element mesh for each of them. These three meshes are then incorporated into the finite-element method code FaultMod to compute a physical model for the rupture dynamics. We use a slip-weakening friction law, and consider different assumptions of background stress, such as constant tractions and regional stress regimes with different orientations. Both the constant and regional stress distributions show that rupture from the Coachella Valley segment is more likely to branch to the Mission Creek than to the Banning fault strand. The fault connectivity at this branch system seems to have a significant impact on the likelihood of a throughgoing rupture, with potentially significant impacts for ground motion and seismic hazard both locally and in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Abstract:
The present paper is devoted to the Riesz basis property of the mode shapes for an aircraft wing model in an inviscid subsonic airflow. The model has been developed in the Flight Systems Research Center of the University of California at Los Angeles in collaboration with NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. The model has been successfully tested in a series of flight experiments at Edwards Airforce Base, CA, and has been extensively studied numerically. The model is governed by a system of two coupled integro-differential equations and a two parameter family of boundary conditions modelling the action of the self-straining actuators. The system of equations of motion is equivalent to a single operator evolution–convolution equation in the energy space. The Laplace transform of the solution of this equation can be represented in terms of the so-called generalized resolvent operator, which is a finite—meromorphic operator—valued function of the spectral parameter. Its poles are precisely the aeroelastic modes. In the author's previous works, it has been shown that the set of aeroelastic modes asymptotically splits into two disjoint subsets called the β -branch and the δ -branch, and precise spectral asymptotics with respect to the eigenvalue number have been derived for both branches. The asymptotical approximations for the mode shapes have also been obtained. In the present work, the author proves that the set of the mode shapes forms an unconditional basis (the Riesz basis) in the Hilbert state space of the system. The results of this paper will be important for the reconstruction of the solution of the original initial boundary-value problem from its Laplace transform and for the analysis of the flutter phenomenon in the forthcoming work.

Abstract:
Indian laurel-leaf fig (Ficus microcarpa L.) is a commonly used indoor and outdoor ornamental tree. F. microcarpa is most frequently encountered as lining city streets, especially in warmer southern California climates. A disease known as ‘Sooty Canker,' caused by the fungus Nattrassia mangiferae (Syd. & P. Syd) B. Sutton & Dyko, is particularly devastating on F. microcarpa. Disease symptoms are characterized by branch dieback, crown thinning, and if the disease progresses to the trunk, eventual tree death (2). Recent taxonomic revisions have renamed Nattrassia mangiferae as Neofusicoccum mangiferae (Syd. & P. Syd.) Crous, Slippers & A. J. L. Phillips (1). An initial survey conducted during the spring of 2011 across four cities in Los Angeles County included, Culver City, Lakewood, Santa Monica, and Whittier. Five symptomatic branches per city were collected from trees showing branch cankers and dieback. Pieces of symptomatic tissue (2 mm2) were plated onto one-half-strength potato dextrose agar. Most isolates initially identified by morphological characteristics, such as growth pattern, speed of growth, and colony color, resembled those in the Botryosphaeriaceae (4). Two representative isolates from each site location were sequenced. Sequences obtained from amplification of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8rDNA-ITS2) and the β-tubulin gene were compared in a BLAST search in GenBank. Results identified isolates as Botryosphaeria dothidea (identity of 99% to EF638767 and 100% to JN183856.1 for ITS and β-tubulin, respectively); Neofusicoccum luteum (100% to EU650669 and 100% to HQ392752); N. mediterraneum (100% to HM443605 and 99% to GU251836); and N. parvum (100% to GU188010 and 100% to HQ392766) and have been deposited in GenBank with the following accession numbers: JN543668 to JN543671 (ITS) and JQ080549 to JQ080552 (β-tubulin). Pathogenicity tests were conducted in the greenhouse on 6-month-old F. microcarpa with one isolate from each previously listed fungal species. Five plants per isolate were stem-wound inoculated with mycelial plugs and wrapped with Parafilm. Uncolonized agar plugs were used as a control. Inoculations were later repeated a second time in the same manner for a total of 10 plants per isolate. Plants were observed for 6 weeks and destructively sampled to measure vascular lesion lengths. Mean vascular lesion lengths were 26, 22, 54, and 46 mm for B. dothidea, N. luteum, N. mediterraneum, and N. parvum, respectively. The mean lesion lengths for all isolates were significantly different (P = 0.05) from the control. Each species was consistently recovered from inoculated plants, except the control, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the pathogenicity of multiple Botryosphaeriaceae species causing branch canker and dieback on F. microcarpa in California. These results are significant since trees along sidewalks in southern California are often crowded and undergo extensive root and branch pruning and some Botryosphaeriaceae spp. are known to enter its host through wounds caused by pruning or mechanical injury (2,3). Further sampling is imperative to better assess the distribution of these canker-causing fungal pathogens on F. microcarpa. References: (1) P. W. Crous et al. Stud. Mycol. 55:235, 2006. (2) D. R. AbstractThe walnut twig beetle (WTB),Pityophthorus juglandisBlackman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), vectors a fungus,Geosmithia morbidaKolařík, Freeland, Utley, and Tisserat (Ascomycota: Hypocreales), which colonises and kills the phloem of walnut and butternut trees,JuglansLinnaeus (Juglandaceae). Over the past two decades, this condition, known as thousand cankers disease (TCD), has led to the widespread mortality ofJuglansspecies in the United States of America. Recently the beetle and pathogen were discovered on severalJuglansspecies in northern Italy. Little is known about the extra-generic extent of host acceptability and suitability for the WTB. We report the occurrence of both the WTB andG. morbidain three species of wingnut,Pterocarya fraxinifoliaSpach,Pterocarya rhoifoliaSiebold and Zuccarini, andPterocarya stenopterade Candolle (Juglandaceae) growing in the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, National Clonal Germplasm Repository collection in northern California (NCGR) and in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in southern California, United States of America. In two instances (once inP. stenopteraand once inP. fraxinifolia) teneral (i.e., brood) adult WTB emerged and were collected more than four months after infested branch sections had been collected in the field. Koch’s postulates were satisfied with an isolate ofG. morbidafromP. stenoptera, confirming this fungus as the causal agent of TCD in this host. A survey of the 37PterocaryaKunth accessions at the NCGR revealed that 46% of the trees had WTB attacks and/or symptoms ofG. morbidainfection. The occurrence of other subcortical Coleoptera associated withPterocaryaand the first occurrence of the polyphagous shot hole borer, a species nearEuwallacea fornicatusEichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), inJuglansare also documented.

Abstract:
The complete genomes were sequenced for ten hepatitis B virus (HBV) strains. Two of them, from Spain and Sweden, were most similar to genotype D, although encoding d specificity. Five of them were from Central America and belonged to genotype F. Two strains from Nicaragua and one from Los Angeles, USA, showed divergences of 3·1–4·1% within the small S gene from genotype F strains and were recognized previously as a divergent clade within genotype F. The complete genomes of the two genotype D strains were found to differ from published genotype D strains by 2·8–4·6%. Their S genes encoded Lys122, Thr127 and Lys160, corresponding to the putative new subtype adw3 within this genotype, previously known to specify ayw2, ayw3 or, rarely, ayw4. The complete genomes of the three divergent strains diverged by 0·8–2·5% from each other, 7·2–10·2% from genotype F strains and 13·2–15·7% from other HBV strains. Since pairwise comparisons of 82 complete HBV genomes of intratypic and intertypic divergences ranged from 0·1 to 7·4% and 6·8 to 17·1%, respectively, the three sequenced strains should represent a new HBV genotype, for which the designation H is proposed. In the polymerase region, the three strains had 16 unique conserved amino acid residues not present in genotype F strains. So far, genotype H has been encountered in Nicaragua, Mexico and California. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete genomes and subgenomes of the three strains showed them clustering with genotype F but forming a separate branch supported by 100% bootstrap. Being most similar to genotype F, known to be an Amerindian genotype, genotype H has most likely split off from genotype F within the New World.

Abstract:
Thus, experiments that prove this characteristic are very important. The purpose of this study was to compare the connective tissue reaction caused by MTA White Angelus, MTA Bio and Sealepox RP. Fifty-four Wistar albino rats were divided in three equal groups. The materials were implanted in subcutaneous connective tissue of the animals, into polyethylene tubes. As control group, gutta-percha was placed in one of the tubes border. The rats were sacrificed after 15, 30 and 60 days. Histologic samples were sectioned in 5µm thickness and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for statistical analysis (p<0,05). The results showed that in all groups there was a standard result on the inflammatory infiltrate observed. The 15 days period showed a more severe response, which has been diminishing over time. There was no statistically significant difference between the materials with respect to the volume density of inflammatory cells observed. Based on the methodology used and taking into account its limitations, it can be concluded that all materials are biocompatible.

A pasta Lysanda® apresentou o maior número de amostras infiltradas (18), em maior período de tempo.<br>The objective of this study was to in vitro evaluate the sealing ability of some dental retrofilling material and for that, we used the White MTA Angelus®, MBPc, CPM® cements and Lysande® paste, by examining Enterococcus faecalis infiltration. Ninety human extracted single-rooted teeth were instrumented, had their apex cut perpendicular to the long axis where the retrograde cavities were prepared with 3 mm deep, sealed with the retrofilling materials used on the study. Specific cultures of Enterococcus faecalis were prepared and inoculated into the teeths root canals previously fixed in special apparatuses that had in their opposite side a sterile type of culture specific for the bacteria in question, separated only by the retrofilling materials under test. Daily, the sterile culture was checked to verify their possible turbidity; and when there was, it demonstrated the bacterials passage by the retrofilling material. All experimental groups showed at least one specimen with bacterial infiltration in the very first 24 hour testing, however, the number of specimens that showed turbidity had decreased numerically during the trial period of 120 days. White Angelus MTA®, CPM® and MBPC cements showed effective sealing capacity and also similar behavior among themselves, because the turbidity of the few samples occurred just in the first three days. Lysanda® paste presented the greatest number of samples infiltrated (18), in a greater period of time.

Abstract:
This thesis examines selected political speeches with regard to word-formation and its processes, namely from the grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic points of view. The analyzed political speeches are the Otto von Bismarck's speech delivered on 20 July 1870, the Adolf Hitler's speech delivered on 1 September 1939, the Willy Brandt's speech delivered on 10 November 1989, and the Angela Merkel's speech from 14 December 2015. This is an interdisciplinary thesis which deals with politics, history, and linguistics. The thesis examines four different periods, namely Bismarck's era, Nazism, the Federal Republic of Germany between 1949 and 1990, and the contemporary Federal Republic of Germany. These periods are analyzed from the political, historical, and socio-cultural points of view. Subsequently, the selected political speeches are analyzed with respect to word- formation, its processes, and the period in which they were delivered. The individual results are then compared and certain conclusions are drawn from the comparison. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the importance of word-formation and its processes which are significant for political speeches from the 19th century onwards. This thesis shows and analyzes the motives, purposes, aims, and consequences of their usage in particular...

Abstract:
This essay analyzes the influence of John Fante's 1939 novel Ask the Dust on recent works of fiction such as Noah Van Sciver's 2015 graphic novel Fante Bukowski. It also explores the influence of such Fante's predecessors as James Branch Cabell, author of Jurgen, on Fante's own fiction, focusing particularly on Fante’s early short story “To Be a Monstrous Fellow.” Key authors of Los Angeles fiction, from L. Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz) to Steve Erickson (Days Between Stations), are juxtaposed with Fante and his unique literary interpretation of southern California as presented in Ask the Dust.

Abstract:
During the Twentieth Century, Los Angeles experienced periods of both positive and negative city branding. Its gleaming midcentury optimism devolved into challenges such as the Rodney King riots. However, modern leadership has a renewed sense of optimism in the Los Angeles city brand that appears to rest on a more integrated and therefore more sustainable foundation. This chapter examines examples of this more integrated and diverse approach toward Los Angeles' city brand. Examples include major events, industrial development, and examinations of certain cultural and ethnic enclaves. It ends with a discussion of how the specific actions taken by Los Angeles can be translated into other cities and their unique assets.

Abstract:
In 1938 and 1939, Cary Grant enjoyed a close, romantic relationship with the actress Phyllis Brooks. They travelled together through Europe in the summer of 1939 and they very nearly married on their return to the USA. Brooks’ mother, however, disliked Grant, and this proved fatal to their relationship. Professionally, Grant continued to branch out as an actor, making the tough aviation drama Only Angels Have Wings (1939). Howard Hawks directed Grant alongside co-stars Jean Arthur and Rita Hayworth, both of whom found the director difficult to work with. Grant branched out further by making the melodramatic “woman’s film” In Name Only (1939) with co-star Carole Lombard. These films were well received by critics and the public, but his next film, His Girl Friday (1940), was a much more significant hit. In this quintessential screwball comedy, director Howard Hawks encouraged Grant and co-star Rosalind Russell to adlib lines, speaking over one another to build a frenzied comic atmosphere. Although critical reviews were mixed in 1940, the film’s reputation has grown over the years, and His Girl Friday now stands among his very best films.

Abstract:
This chapter juxtaposes two artistic interventions into money: one, an “occasional coffee shop” where patrons are exhorted to “throw $$ on the floor;” the other, the work of artist MáximoGonzálzez, who creates installations out of cut and folded decommissioned banknotes. This juxtaposition allows the author so discuss the relationships among money, waste, art and payment. Venturing into “Squamuglia,” a pop-up coffee shop and/or artistic performance in Los Angeles presents an occasion to reflect on physical banknotes, art and philosophy with Squamuglia’s host, Ben Turner. Merging sound, objects, refuse, trees and branches, plastic, wooden beams and other items, Turner’s coffee shop went through diverse, always different iterations, each one, however, centered around serving espresso coffee drinks, and an exhortation to pay—or not—by throwing money on the floor. Ben would collect the money, which would usually have become dirty, and wash it with soap and a sponge before recirculating it. Yet he felt that this made the bills less “vibrant.” Money’s dirtiness or vibrancy also has to do with its relationship to the state, a theme explicit in González’s art.

Boffone, Trevor. "This Bridge Called Dubsmash." In Renegades. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197577677.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the varied ways that Renegades build digital communities using Dubsmash and Instagram. It argues that online communities hold the potential to democratize access and reject coastal biases typically seen in popular US culture. The traditional entertainment centers of Los Angeles and New York City, while still important, are relegated to second-tier status behind cities such as Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta, in addition to less populated areas across the American South. By taking up digital space on an inclusive platform, Renegades re-center traditional scripts of community building, effectively demonstrating the necessity for culturally responsive communities. These Dubsmashers search for what is familiar and lay the groundwork for equity and inclusion from there, promoting a shared sense of values that enables a plurality of voices to rise to the top. The chapter uses the official Dubsmash Instagram account as a case study, unpacking the nuanced ways that Dubsmash promotes the work of its most well-known influencers alongside a growing set of Renegades who show brand loyalty by regularly engaging with the app and who promote this subset of hip hop culture through their micro-performances on Dubsmash. Specifically, this chapter explores the different ways that Dubsmash has used dance challenge and games to bring people together and further a sense of connection during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

Gracey, James. "Seeing Red." In The Company of Wolves. Liverpool University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781911325314.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks into the heart of Neil Jordan's The Company of Wolves as a story of sexual awakening, literal and figurative formation, and the empowerment of women. It discusses how The Company of Wolves carries a strong feminist message that is more than a singular concept, like the short stories from Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber. It also explains Carter's brand of feminism that represents one strand that was often at odds with those of other feminists at the time and even considered highly controversial. The chapter analyses how Carter sought to expose how women's sexuality is perceived as a myth instigated and perpetuated by moral and social conditioning. It discloses Carter's frequent visit to the world of fairy tales to critique culturally constructed notions relating to women, gender roles and femininity.

Abstract:
Curtiz signed a term deal with Paramount and helmedWhite Christmas (1954), the initial picture with the wide-screen format of VistaVision. Boosted by the star power of Bing Crosby, it was his most financially successful picture and became a Yuletide staple despite a clichéd script. He began a relationship with a twenty-year-old model, Jill Gerrard, while continuing hislong-term affair with the actress Anitra Stevens (Ann Stuart).Darryl Zanuck hired Curtiz to direct his uber-epic The Egyptian. Marlon Brando dropped out in favor of Edmond Purdom, and Zanuck cast his foreign-born mistress, Bella Darvi, as one of the leads.Curtiz addedAnitra Stevens to the cast as Nefertiti. The Egyptian was a critical and financial flop. He directedWe’re No Angels(1955), with Humphrey Bogart, which was a qualified success, followed by The Vagabond King, a Rudolf Friml musical that was an unmitigated disaster. He attempted to recover withThe Scarlet Hour, a crime drama starring a pair of new actors that wasanother disappointment. Soon after finishing up on that film, Curtiz was arrested for “disorderly conduct” (hiring a couple to have sex while he watched) and was written up in Confidential magazine.Although he partially rebounded with the Fox musical The Best Things in Life Are Free(1956), his professional future at age seventy appeared problematical.

Reuss, Martin. "The Development of American Water Resources: Planners, Politicians, and Constitutional Interpretation." In Managing Water Resources, Past and Present. Oxford University Press, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199267644.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
To understand the development of American water resources, one must first look at American political and social values and American governmental institutions. Even a cursory examination shows the lasting influence of decisions and attitudes moulded as the country took its first hesitant steps as a republic. Historian Joyce Appleby (2000: 249) has argued that the first generation of Americans bequeathed ‘open opportunity, an unfettered spirit of inquiry, [and] personal liberty’ to future generations—qualities, we might note, that often introduce an element of uncertainty into public administration. But if we extend the analysis a bit, we might not only gain an appreciation of the many challenges facing water resource developers, but also illuminate a fundamental question facing democratic nations: to what extent should human liberty be constrained in order to provide and manage a human necessity—water. Beyond Appleby’s observations, one notes at least two pervasive elements woven into American political behaviour. The first, the inescapable, element is distrust of powerful governments. Power corrupts, the first Americans agreed without much hesitation, and the challenge was how to minimize that corruption, how to ensure that good men will not be enticed to do evil, and how to disperse power to minimize oppression. Loudly over the years, Americans continue to proclaim their distrust of big government; even popular presidents generate scepticism when they appear to reach for increased power and authority. Only as a last resort, and then with resignation, not enthusiasm, as during the Great Depression, do Americans turn to the national government to solve their problems (Kelley 1989: 30-1; Wills 1999). The result can be truly impressive: Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams, locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi, the California Central Valley Project, and the Los Angeles flood control system all came out of depression era politics, but, as I will argue, all are aberrations in the story of American water resources. The second element, almost as pervasive as the first, is that power and liberty are fundamental antagonists. The dispersion of power among the three branches of government purposely sets power at war with itself rather than with ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’.

Abstract:
Snage inkluzivnih i ekskluzivnih društava regrutiraju s obje strane tradicionalnog ideološkog spektra.
