Abstract:
This chapter looks at how Regina became part of the Harlem Renaissance upon her arrival in New York City. Events collided to put Regina at the forefront of the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement marked by increased literary, musical, and artistic creativity by African American artists who wanted to challenge the prevailing stereotypical representation of their image. Writers and artists came from all over the United States to participate. In Los Angeles, writer Wallace Thurman encouraged fellow post-office worker Arna Bontemps to go to Harlem. Opportunity editor Charles S. Johnson encouraged Zora Neale Hurston to move to New York City. All of these great thinkers, writers, and artists would pass through the 135th Street Branch, where Regina was assigned.

Schwadron, Hannah. Punk Porn Princess Joanna Angel and the Rise of Jewess Raunch. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190624194.003.0006.

Abstract:
This chapter transitions from mainstream film to the adult film industry, highlighting the punk porn and XXX parody of popular Jewish porn star and director Joanna Angel. As Angel leads an altporn phenomenon, she exemplifies the salability of the Sexy Jewess who sells sex outright. Her Burning Angel brand of Jewish joke-work builds on the emboldened platforms of neoburlesque striptease while nodding to the ironic suggestion of sex in mainstream comedy and its horrible sin when seen in Hollywood plots. Powered by their success as hard-core sex, Angel’s performances play with the liberatory potential of Jewess raunch as a secular comic pulpit for distinctly commercial ends.

Abstract:
The introduction provides the theoretical argument of the book. It explains why the backstudio picture is not a cycle but a genre in its own right, and how the genre depicts Hollywood as a geographic place in Los Angeles, as an industry, and as a symbol. It goes on to show how the backstudio picture has historically served to brand the motion picture industry as “Hollywood,” working in much the same way as consumer brands do today. Additionally, the introduction provides a historical overview of the genre, focusing on its four major cycles of production, from the silent era to the present day. Finally, it briefly describes the content of the seven chapters.

Abstract:
Corporate consulting, a one-time seemingly marvelous mixture of bare-knuckle rationalization, esoterica, and visionary futurism, is invariably deployed when business structures threaten to lose their equilibrium. What it actually means to be consulted, the part played by media in consulting, and how the branch of corporate consulting became a system of knowledge with such a socially important role is the object of this book. For the first time, it explores the ways in which the latest media technology, avant-garde aesthetics, economic pressures, and holistic philosophy together constituted the form of consulting dominant today, and which consequences arise from this. Thus it follows the work of early corporate consultants like Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and H. L. Gantt, while analyzing and describing their visual consulting models. The book develops a new, innovative, interdisciplinary approach, situated between media and business history, media archeology, and social theory, and thereby charts the genesis of modern consulting knowledge. It reveals that corporate consulting must be conceptualized in close relation to the visual culture that prevailed during this time, one which drew from nineteenth-century visualization methods and, more particularly, the new medium of film. Consulting is a cultural technique that is markedly characterized by media processes, in which the boundaries of economic logic and legitimacy emerge, and which, at the same time, considerably shapes and stabilizes this modus operandi up to the present day.

Vélez, Karin. The Miraculous Flying House of Loreto. Princeton University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691174006.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1295, a house fell from the evening sky onto an Italian coastal road by the Adriatic Sea. Inside, awestruck locals encountered the Virgin Mary, who explained that this humble mud-brick structure was her original residence newly arrived from Nazareth. To keep it from the hands of Muslim invaders, angels had flown it to Loreto, stopping three times along the way. This story of the house of Loreto has been read as an allegory of how Catholicism spread peacefully around the world by dropping miraculously from the heavens. This book calls that interpretation into question by examining historical accounts of the movement of the Holy House across the Mediterranean in the thirteenth century and the Atlantic in the seventeenth century. These records indicate vast and voluntary involvement in the project of formulating a branch of Catholic devotion. The book surveys the efforts of European Jesuits, Slavic migrants, and indigenous peoples in Baja California, Canada, and Peru. These individuals contributed to the expansion of Catholicism by acting as unofficial authors, inadvertent pilgrims, unlicensed architects, unacknowledged artists, and unsolicited cataloguers of Loreto. Their participation in portaging Mary's house challenges traditional views of Christianity as a prepackaged European export, and instead suggests that Christianity is the cumulative product of thousands of self-appointed editors. The book also demonstrates how miracle narratives can be treated seriously as historical sources that preserve traces of real events. Drawing on rich archival materials, the book illustrates how global Catholicism proliferated through independent initiatives of untrained laymen.

Powers, Melinda. ‘The Black Body’ in TWAS’ MEDEA and Pecong and CTH’s Trojan Women. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198777359.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores three Harlem-based productions of Greek dramas: Take Wing and Soar’s MEDEA (2008) and Pecong (2010), and the Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Trojan Women (2008). Drawing on the work of performance theorists like Harvey Young, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, Angela Pao, and Brandi Wilkins Catanese, it argues that these performances and their reception both illustrate and pose a challenge to implicit and explicit biases against African Americans. While each work aims to challenge cultural stereotypes of African Americans in distinct ways, their reception, in some cases, also illustrates the persistence of societal ideas of ‘the black body’, an idea of blackness that continues to be projected upon actual bodies. Despite these challenges, each work aims to promote an idea of a hybrid America, one that looks towards a hybrid future while acknowledging a segregated past of racial division that continues to deny opportunities to artists of colour.

Abstract:
This volume of the Humboldt Lectures on Europe serves as a unique contemporary testimony of European integration since the euro crisis. The Walter Hallstein Institute for European Constitutional Law at the Humboldt University of Berlin organizes the Humboldt Lectures on Europe in irregular intervals and has managed to establish these lectures as a valuable and respected forum of discussion on European debates. The present lectures offer a contemporary insight into these debates, depicting the perspectives of European heads of state and government as well as those of high-ranking representatives of the executive, judicial and legislative branches of European states and EU institutions. These lectures contribute to an interdisciplinary discourse in academia, the political arena, and beyond. With contributions by et al Angela Merkel, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Herman van Rompuy, Francois Fillon, Jerzy Buzek, Martin Schulz, Andreas Voßkuhle, Mario Monti, Susanne Baer, Ineta Ziemele, Simon Coveney, Paolo Gentiloni and Olaf Scholz
