Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of Korean American fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Korean pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. Two research questions were developed to guide the study: (a) How are participants’ ethnic identity perceptions as Korean Americans intertwined with their fanship to Hyun-Jin Ryu? and (b) How are participants’ lived experiences intertwined with their fanship to Ryu? The study focused on the details of how fans perceived their ethnic identity in relation to Ryu’s performance and presence in Major League Baseball. Findings revealed that fans initially became involved due to their ethnic ties to Ryu and remained as fans because they felt connected to the motherland of Korea. Fans individually identified with Ryu through the perceived minority status of being Korean American in the US. Fans experienced vicarious satisfaction as they felt Ryu broke racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes through his body image and physical performance. Consequently, they developed Korean pride when Ryu performed well. This study extends Tajfel and Turner’s social identity theory and Phinney’s concept of ethnic identity to examine fanship to a specific player rather than a team.

Germeck, Karl. "“Speaking With” the Ravine: Representation and Memory in Five Cultural Productions of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/867.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the rich and layered intertextual relationship between five artisticrepresentations of the razed neighborhoods of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles, and its former residents. These works include Seattle-based photographer Don Normark’s 1999 photography collection Chávez Ravine, 1949: A Los Angeles Story; the full-length dramatic play Chavez Ravine, written and first performed by Los Angeles-based Chicano comedy troupe Culture Clash in 2003; Jordan Mechner’s 2004 short documentary film Chávez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story; Ry Cooder’s musical album Chávez Ravine: A Record by Ry Cooder; and lastly, high school history teacher Ken Aven’s 2006 debut novel, Chavez Ravine Echoes. Together, these five productions make up a case study that engages with the theoretical debate about privileged groups speaking for, or on behalf of, underrepresented groups. This analysis emphasizes a process of representation that is shared and driven by dialogue between the artists of these productions and the place and people they represent. Through the inclusion of resident involvement in the production process and the weaving of narrative elements from both Mexican American and dominant cultural traditions, these projects promote the Ravine’s cultural wealth and visibility within a popular culture dominated by the symbol of Dodger Stadium. This study, through close readings and textual analysis, demonstrates how these works, considered together, open up spaces for cross-cultural discussions about Chavez Ravine and the various roles it plays within U.S. cultural history. More importantly, these five representations of Chavez Ravine figuratively practice and promote a “speaking to and with” model of intercultural communication between dominant and minority cultures.

The purpose of this study is to find the critical factor affecting outcomes of baseball games. The routine games from 2008 to 2011 between LAD and SF of MLB are used as examples. There were 18 games per year, a total of 72 games, of which 54 are adopted as training data of neural network model for predicting the last 18 games in 2011 and the games held on May 8th, 9th and 10th of 2012. Thus a total of 21 games are the primary test data. This study analyzes and integrates the data recorded after each routine game between LAD and SF, established the critical factors affecting game outcomes, and uses neural network technology to predict the winning team. In aspect of offense, critical factors include HR, RBI, AVG and OBP; in aspect of pitcher, factors include IP, HR, AVG and WHIP. The neural network model adopts the back-error propagation neural network model for its stability, and easiness to converge and learn. This model is compared with other models which applied statistical methods, and the results show that the neural network model is viable for prediction of non-linear models, and can be used to understand the extent of impact of these critical factors on the games.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 moves deeper into the U.S. era, chronicling how, between the 1880s and 1910s, authorities in Los Angeles redirected and expanded the city’s carceral capacity. They did so while targeting a particular population: poor white men, namely those popularly disparaged as “tramps” and “hobos” for migrating constantly, working little, and living and loving beyond the bounds of the nuclear family ideal. By 1910, when white men comprised nearly 100 percent of the local jail population, Los Angeles operated one of the largest jail systems in the country. And, as the city rapidly grew during these years, Los Angeles authorities operated a large convict labor program. In turn, white men sentenced to the chain gang cut roads, beautified parks, built schools, and so on. Chapter 2 details the rise of white male incarceration at the turn of the twentieth century and unveils the little-known history of how incarcerated white men built the infrastructure of the growing city. From Sunset Boulevard to the paths winding around Dodger Stadium, city residents still walk, ride, and run on the imprint of their labors.

Abstract:
Curtiz embarked on the most successful portion of his career as his cinematic style merged with the rapid-paced Warner studio technique. His relentless attention to detail includedresearching the nuances of his adopted country asthey might be applied to each of his film assignments. Screenwriters such as Casey Robinson and Robert Buckner questioned his ability to maintain story continuity, but no one could argue with his ability to make a successful picture. He was nominated as Best Director for Four Daughters, which rocketed John Garfield to stardom, and also for Angels with Dirty Faces, starring James Cagney. He closed out the year by directing Dodge City, a sprawling Technicolor Western starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havillandthat would be one of the top-ten Hollywood moneymakers in 1939. Curtiz and Bess settled into a comfortable routine on the Canoga Ranch; Kitty attended CCNY as the Warners launched a campaign to rally the country against the specter of Nazism in Europe.
