Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of Korean American fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Korean pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. Two research questions were developed to guide the study: (a) How are participants’ ethnic identity perceptions as Korean Americans intertwined with their fanship to Hyun-Jin Ryu? and (b) How are participants’ lived experiences intertwined with their fanship to Ryu? The study focused on the details of how fans perceived their ethnic identity in relation to Ryu’s performance and presence in Major League Baseball. Findings revealed that fans initially became involved due to their ethnic ties to Ryu and remained as fans because they felt connected to the motherland of Korea. Fans individually identified with Ryu through the perceived minority status of being Korean American in the US. Fans experienced vicarious satisfaction as they felt Ryu broke racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes through his body image and physical performance. Consequently, they developed Korean pride when Ryu performed well. This study extends Tajfel and Turner’s social identity theory and Phinney’s concept of ethnic identity to examine fanship to a specific player rather than a team.

Abstract:
This classic examines the landmark publication ‘Reconstruction of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament in Athletes’ by Jobeet al, published in 1986. Dr Frank W Jobe was the first to perform and describe a standard technique for ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction with the use of a figure-of-eight configuration and submuscular ulnar nerve transposition to treat throwing athletes with UCL insufficiency. Before Jobe’s pioneering work, the initial operative approach to patients with UCL tears involved repair of the native ligament. Despite this treatment, injuries of the UCL were considered career-ending in those days. The original article describes the surgical technique for UCL reconstruction and the postoperative rehabilitation and outcomes in 16 throwing athletes, including Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John (Los Angeles Dodgers). Jobe reported good results, with 10 of the 16 patients returning to their previous level of participation in sports, one patient returning to a lower level of participation and five patients retiring from professional athletics due to reasons not related to the operation. However, a high incidence of ulnar nerve complications was reported, requiring secondary surgery in two patients. In the decades following the original publication by Jobeet al, modifications of the Jobe technique, involving different graft choices, tunnel positions, and graft configurations and fixation methods have resulted in improved clinical results. Originally presented as a treatment option for elite athletes only, UCL reconstruction has gained public interest as incidence rates of ‘Tommy John surgery’ have reached epidemic proportions, especially in high school-aged baseball pitchers in the USA.

Abstract:
Seventeen years after professional baseball player Jim Eisenreich first developed symptoms of Tourette syndrome (TS), the correct diagnosis was finally made.At age 6, his rapid eye blinking led to a diagnosis of hyperactivity. “I was told I would grow out of it,” says the 39-year-old Eisenreich, who may have played his last game as a Los Angeles Dodger. “I knew I was different even then.”In the early 1980s, Eisenreich's condition first became public. Since then, his achievements as a professional athlete have made him a role model for other TS patients.Sports were always a haven for him as he grew up. “I found peace, comfort, and security in sports. Whatever the season, I played the sport—football, baseball, hockey,” says Eisenreich. “Socially, I didn't go to the movies or go out much with girls.”After 2 years in the minor leagues, he was called up by the Minnesota Twins in 1982 as an outfielder. During the season, a TS specialist recognized his grunting and sniffling as signs of the disease. “I had no idea what the specialist was talking about, and the Twins doctors dismissed it because I didn't have copralalia,” he says. The Twins team physician (an internist) prescribed a sedative. Then Eisenreich tried Inderal, which caused hyperventilation, and Catapres, which caused depression.

Full text
Abstract:
Gray leaf spot of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) turf was first reported in the United States in 1991. The disease epidemic was primarily confined to golf course fairways in southeastern Pennsylvania (1). Subsequently, moderate to severe outbreaks of gray leaf spot occurred in perennial ryegrass fairways and roughs in numerous locations throughout the eastern and midwestern United States. In August 2001, a serious decline of perennial ryegrass turf was observed in a bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers) baseball field in Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA, that had been overseeded with perennial ryegrass. The bermudagrass turf was not affected. The perennial ryegrass turf developed necrotic lesions that resulted in blighting of leaf blades. In laboratory assays, Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc., was consistently isolated from symptomatic ryegrass blades from turf samples collected from the site. Of the 12 P. grisea isolates collected from the assayed leaf blades, five isolates were selected for a pathogenicity assay. Twenty-five ‘Legacy II’ perennial ryegrass plants were grown from seeds in 4 × 4 in.-plastic pots, (10 × 10 cm) which were filled to 1 cm below the rim with granular calcine clay medium (Turface MVP, Allied Industrial Material Corp., Buffalo Grove, IL). Three weeks after seeding, plants were fertilized with a water-soluble 20-20-20 N-P-K fertilizer (1.3 g/liter of water) once per week. Treatments (isolates of P. grisea and a control) were arranged as a randomized complete block design with five replications. Five-week-old plants were sprayed with an aqueous suspension of P. grisea conidia (≈5 × 104 conidia per ml of sterilized distilled water with 0.1% Tween 20) using an atomizer until the leaves were completely wet. Plants sprayed with sterilized distilled water served as the control. After inoculation, individual pots were covered with clear polyethylene bags and placed in a controlled environment chamber maintained at 28°C and continuous fluorescent light (88 μE m-2 s-1). Four days after inoculation, necrotic lesions (<2 mm diameter) developed on ryegrass blades inoculated with each isolate of P. grisea. Lesions did not develop on leaves of control plants. Seven days after inoculation, the polyethylene bags were removed, and 50 symptomatic blades from each pot were collected, and disease incidence (percent infected leaves) and severity (index 0 to 10; 0 = none, 10 = >90% of the leaf blade necrotic ) were assessed. P. grisea was isolated from symptomatic leaves of plants inoculated with the fungus. Disease incidence and severity on inoculated plants were 92 to 96% and 8.8 to 10, respectively. There were no significant differences in disease incidence and severity (P = 0.05) among the isolates of P. grisea included in the test. To our knowledge, this is the first report of gray leaf spot of perennial ryegrass turf in California. Reference: (1) P. J. Landschoot and B. F. Hoyland. Plant Dis. 76:1280, 1992.

Abstract:
To improve online learning pedagogy within the field of paralegal education, this study investigated how paralegal students and paralegal instructors perceived the effectiveness of synchronous and asynchronous online paralegal courses. This study intended to inform paralegal instructors and course developers how to better design, deliver, and evaluate effective online course instruction in the field of paralegal studies.Survey results were analyzed using independent samples t-test and correlational analysis, and indicated that overall, paralegal students and paralegal instructors positively perceived synchronous and asynchronous online paralegal courses. Paralegal instructors reported statistically significant higher perceptions than paralegal students: (1) of instructional design and course content in synchronous online paralegal courses; and (2) of technical assistance, communication, and course content in asynchronous online paralegal courses. Instructors also reported higher perceptions of the effectiveness of universal design, online instructional design, and course content in synchronous online paralegal courses than in asynchronous online paralegal courses. Paralegal students reported higher perceptions of asynchronous online paralegal course effectiveness regarding universal design than paralegal instructors. No statistically significant differences existed between paralegal students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of synchronous and asynchronous online paralegal courses. A strong, negative relationship existed between paralegal students’ age and their perceptions of effective synchronous paralegal courses, which were statistically and practically significant. Lastly, this study provided practical applicability and opportunities for future research. Akyol, Z., & Garrison, D. R. (2008). Abstract:
The role of marketing communications is to advance the bottom line and the public good – and not necessarily in that order. Giving back is an integral part of the New Normal. And there has never been a better tool to accomplish this mission than social media. But healthcare marketing –and particularly of the regulated variety --is between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, marketers understand the importance and opportunity in social media. It’s where the people are. It’s where the action is. But then there are all those pesky regulatory concerns. As Walter O’Malley –the man who moved the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles once commented, “The future is just one damn thing after another.”

Abstract:
Last month, legendary baseball manager Tommy Lasorda died. I met Tommy only once. It was a warm July evening, the Los Angeles Dodgers were playing the Philadelphia Phillies, and Tommy was in town for the game. His beloved Boys in Blue soundly beat my home team, 16 to 2. I'd already read Tommy Lasorda: My Way, a biography full of his aphorisms and stories. Still, I was an eager audience as Tommy held forth—not only on baseball but also, in so many words, on the game of life and what it means to play it well. The morning after he died, it was that book I pulled from the shelf and sat down to reread. Here is one of the last stories in the book.
