Abstract:
Abstract No major professional sports league epitomizes Guy Debord’s idea of the spectacle more than the NBA. The league was the first to understand the importance of highlights and global expansion, and participated in creating the first branded superstar in Michael Jordan. Naturally there are some controversies surrounding the rise to its present-day status, like the (supposedly) fixed 1985 draft or Michael Jordan’s (supposedly) enforced first retirement. One of the most controversial events in recent league history took place during Game Six of the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings. A lot of controversial calls by the referees allowed the Lakers to win the game and eventually the series. As the Lakers were about to get eliminated, the league officials allegedly encouraged referees to force a Game Seven. The problem with the allegations was that they were made public by former referee Tim Donaghy, who himself used to bet on games. David Stern, the league’s former commissioner was referring to Donaghy’s gambling addiction as the reason for the falsity of his statements. My paper uses the game in question as a case study in order to present the spectacular aspects of the NBA.

Abstract:
After his election in 1973, Los Angeles’s first African American mayor, Tom Bradley, worked to implement reforms that would increase civilian oversight and accountability of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Ensuring procedural fairness that treated all residents equally, Bradley and other liberals believed, would lead to reductions in police harassment, abuse, and shootings. Placing their faith in the power of government to effectively manage the police allowed liberals to pledge both strong support for tough law enforcement and propose police reforms. This liberal law-and-order, however, did not result in similar police reforms, such as civilian review, pursued in other Democratic-run cities. No event demonstrated this limitation of Bradley’s liberal law-and-order approach to police reform as the Rodney King beating and the 1992 Los Angeles rebellion. Rather than demonstrating the failure of liberal reform, Los Angeles shows how liberal law-and-order facilitated the expansion of police authority after the 1960s.

Abstract:
On the west front of Bath Abbey there are carved two stone ladders stretching from heaven to earth on which twelve angels are climbing, six on each ladder. A tourist who sees the west front of the abbey for the first time is told that the carvings represent the dream of Oliver King, Bishop of Bath and Wells under Henry VII and his former chief secretary. The bishop had a nocturnal vision of angels climbing ladders to heaven. As he stood before the ladders in amazement, he heard voices saying that an olive should establish the crown and that the king should restore the church. He took the reference to olives and kings to be an allusion to his own name and concluded that he, Oliver King, should support the Tudor monarchy and rebuild the ruined abbey at Bath.

Abstract:
‭This study traces the route by which the city of Los Angeles came to be called by that name. Late in life St. Francis retired to a tiny hut on “a little piece of property,” una porziuncola near Assisi. Because angels were frequently heard singing there, the area around his hut was known as “La Valle di Nostra Donna degli Angeli.” Here, Francis experienced two appearances of Mary and her Son, during which he obtained the revolutionary plenary indulgence known as Il Perdono d’Assisi. The Porziuncola became a pilgrims’ shrine, and Francis’s hut was transformed into a huge basilica dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli. Reception of the indulgence slowly spread throughout Europe, and most particularly in Spain. Columbus, who was a Franciscan Tertiary, after a stay in the monastery of Our Lady of the Angels at La Rábida, set sail on his momentous journey on the feast of the Perdono (2 August). The indulgence was carried to the New World by the Franciscans where the devotion developed a wide-spread cult. Three hundred years later, the Spanish king’s army, accompanied by Franciscan friars, journeyed up the western coast and came upon a clear stream, which they called la Porciúncula. In 1781, the New World City of the Angels was founded in the cult’s honor.‬

Abstract:
“The Miracle of the Golden Arches: Race and Fast Food in Los Angeles” examines the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and its advocacy on behalf of the city’s black McDonald’s franchisees. The franchisees believed that McDonald’s limited their ability to franchise restaurants outside of predominately black neighborhoods. Analyzing the rhetoric surrounding these disputes, the article argues that despite their economic prosperity as a group, African American McDonald’s franchisees often found themselves in an uneasy position as models of racial progress and victims of racial discrimination. The article covers the period between two urban uprisings—the aftermath of Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968 and the days after police officers were acquitted of beating Rodney King in 1992—to expose the relationship between McDonald’s and black consumers in moments of economic, social, and racial crisis.

Abstract:
This Thesis is a proposal for a prototypical hillside housing community in Los Angeles, California. As a prototype it is responsible for setting an architectural precedent. In this effort, the Thesis continues with focus on issues of construction methodology, urban planning, and land use relationships concerning the present city. Being clear and uncomplicated is the driving force of this architectural process. On the horizon is the 21st Century. Architecture has become increasingly convoluted rather than enlightened. Here, I have focused my attentions on developing a technologically based, material-driven, compassionate solution to answer the issue of housing on the hillsides of Los Angeles. I have realized a clear system of building using uncomplicated technology and material. However, as demonstrated, this system of building provides only an envelope for space definition. It becomes the architectural precedent, a canvas, through which the inhabitant can define his existence. Enlightened limitations.
Master of Architecture

Therefore, it is necessary to acquire knowledge about the characteristics of the species during the nursery stage, especially regarding their nutritional requirements and their responses to substrate correction. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of liming with different types of limestone and of Ca and Mg deficiency correction, along with non-corrective sources of soil acidity, on the development of angelim-pedra (Dinizia excelsa), cedar (Cedrela odorata) and mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) seedlings. This study was carried out in the FCA/UFAM greenhouse, using as a Yellow Latosol substrate. We tested three types of limestone and three Ca:Mg ratios (with non-corrective products of acidity). The treatments tested were: T0 - control, T1 - dolomitic limestone (3:1), T2 - magnesium limestone (9:1), T3 - calcitic limestone (15:1), T4 - Ca and Mg in 3:1 ratio; T5 - Ca and Mg in 9:1 ratio and T6 - Ca and Mg in 15:1 ratio. The experimental design was composed of randomized blocks with 5 repetitions, for a total of 35 plots. Each plot was formed by 3 seedlings, grown in citropotes, with a capacity of 3.2 kilograms of substrate. Corrective fertilizating was done in doses equivalent to 100, 250, 150 and 15 kg.ha-1, N, P2O5, K2O and S, respectively, and Chelamix, a source of B (0,5% ), Cu (0,2%), Fe (0,3%), Mn (0,2%), Mo (0,5%) and Zn (2,4%), disolved in water, was used as a source of micronutrients . The growth characteristics evaluated were height, diameter, dry weight of the shoot (ADM), dry weight of the root, total dry weight, root/shoot ratio and shoot nutrient content. The means were compared using a Scott-Knott test with a 5% probability. The angelim-pedra seedlings responded to the different limestone sources and to Ca and Mg addition, for all the assessed growth characteristics, except for the root/shoot ratio. The best results were obtained when the seedlings developed under a Ca:Mg ratio of 9:1, regardless of source. The cedar seedlings were more sensitive to the acidity of the growing substrate, responding only to the addition of magnesium limestone for all the evaluated growth characteristics, with the exception of height, which responded to the addition of calcitic limestone, and of the root/shoot ratio. The mahogany seedlings showed the effect of the different treatments only regarding height, with the limestone treated seedlings being the same to the seedlings treated with the 15:1 Ca and Mg ratio. However, the liming had a positive effect on the absorption of K, Ca and Mg by the seedling shoots, showing the importance of liming for obtaining quality seedlings. Overall, the three species under study showed the best results when cultivated using magnesium limestone as a corrective for acidity and as a source of Ca and Mg in the growing substrate.

Abstract:
During the Twentieth Century, Los Angeles experienced periods of both positive and negative city branding. Its gleaming midcentury optimism devolved into challenges such as the Rodney King riots. However, modern leadership has a renewed sense of optimism in the Los Angeles city brand that appears to rest on a more integrated and therefore more sustainable foundation. This chapter examines examples of this more integrated and diverse approach toward Los Angeles' city brand. Examples include major events, industrial development, and examinations of certain cultural and ethnic enclaves. It ends with a discussion of how the specific actions taken by Los Angeles can be translated into other cities and their unique assets.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the fight for housing affordability, which is just one instance of civic action. Advocates across the coalitions and organizations in this study talked about housing “affordability” as one of their primary concerns, and often the biggest one. When they said housing in Los Angeles was unaffordable and there was a “housing crisis,” they usually meant housing was too expensive for many ordinary Angelenos or frequently unavailable at an affordable price. Using the same language of affordability, it makes sense to ask about the big picture. Is housing unaffordability usually temporary or chronic? Does it result from deep, institutional processes or contingencies relatively easy to alter? Does it affect only particular kinds of people or places? It makes sense to ask about this study's locale too. What might make housing conditions and problems in Los Angeles distinctive, or characteristic of life in the United States, or global, or maybe all three? The chapter provides a brief sketch of crucial contexts that affect the affordability of housing and make it potentially a problem.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the history of Brazilian music in Los Angeles, covering the journey of the collation of rhythms known as samba into the rest of the Americas, to the emergence of bossa nova as a major cultural force, to the post-bossa Brazilian sound in the United States. It argues that as music moves, it operates according to its own logic. Influences are fluid: a bossa nova rhythm can morph easily into a second line, a two step can slide into a samba, and writing music is, thankfully, a far more interesting way to write history than history writing. But it is undeniable that, since the late 1930s, the language, swing, and palette of Brazilian music have influenced the world and changed music in the city of Los Angeles profoundly, while very few of us noticed.

Abstract:
Computational simulation of flow, heat transfer and combustion in a vertical tube heat recovery system generator (HRSG) with a single angel roof, a dual angle roof and an air flow optimized evase are studied. Existing theoretical models for flow and gas combustion [1] are used to predict how the three kinds of roof shapes influence the flue gas and temperature distribution in the whole HRSG System, and particularly the flue gas distribution upstream of first heat exchanger bundles (superheater 3 and reheater 2) and duct burner as well as the temperature distribution downstream of the duct burner. The gas phase conservation equations of momentum, enthalpy and mixture fraction are solved utilizing the k-(epsilon) turbulence model. A Finite Rate/Eddy Dissipation model and the P-1 radiation mode are used to predict gas combustion and radiative heat transfer, respectively. The simulation results show the air flow optimized evase not only provides a more uniform velocity profile upstream of the first heat exchanger bundle, but is also able to reduce the pressure drop through the whole HRSG system.
