Abstract:
The majority of local health departments perform routine restaurant inspections. In Los Angeles County (LAC), California, approximately $10 million/year is spent on restaurant inspections. However, data are limited as to whether or not certain characteristics of restaurants make them more likely to be associated with foodborne incident reports. We used data from the LAC Environmental Health Management Information System (EHMIS), which records the results of all routine restaurant inspections as well as data regarding all consumer-generated foodborne incidents that led to a special restaurant i

AbstractZoning codes dramatically impact every community they touch. Ostensibly, these ordinances are meant to impose some collectively determined order on our built environments. In practice, they often draw lines in the sand that distribute power unevenly between residents. As home to the U.S.’ second largest homeless population, Los Angeles is but a stark example of the widespread housing crisis hitting many cities around the globe. In the 1970s, this is where the city drew borders around its Skid Row and consolidated social services in a bid to contain homelessness within the region’s urba

SUMMARY We use broad-band stations of the ‘Los Angeles Syncline Seismic Interferometry Experiment’ (LASSIE) to perform a joint inversion of the Horizontal to Vertical spectral ratios (H/V) and multimode dispersion curves (phase and group velocity) for both Rayleigh and Love waves at each station of a dense line of sensors. The H/V of the autocorrelated signal at a seismic station is proportional to the ratio of the imaginary parts of the Green’s function. The presence of low-frequency peaks (∼0.2 Hz) in H/V allows us to constrain the structure of the basin with high confidence to a depth of 6

The interaction between environmental noise and the built environment is an often-neglected area in the practice of urban planning and design. Most quantitative research is limited to single value loudness metrics and ignores the more complex spatial nuances of the noisescape. Qualitative soundscape research, on the other hand, is difficult to generalize to the urban scale. We report on an exploratory noise sensing project in Los Angeles, CA that investigates both qualitative and quantitative aspects of the noisescape. Using an experimental array of noise sensors mounted on city street lights,

This study evaluated the effects of coarse aggregate angularity (CAA) on the performances of warm mix asphalt (WMA) because previous studies have predominantly focused on the effects of CAA on the hot mix asphalt (HMA) performances. Five different CAAs were fabricated using Los Angeles abrasion test, and the digital image processing method was used to identify the CAA. Five mixes with different combinations of CAA and Sasobit-modified asphalt binder were prepared according to the Marshall mix design procedure. This paper deals with the analysis of combined wave and current forces acting on an 8.3-ft-diameter, 70-ft-long submarine pipeline mounted on a steep slope at Keahole Point on the island of Hawaii, Hawaii. Force transfer coefficients have been obtained for a large number of wave and current conditions. In the absence of strong currents, mean values of wave force coefficients calculated by a frequency-domain method have proven to predict extremely well the distribution of peak wave forces. In cases where current effects are relevant, a wave-by-wave analysis of the loads indicates that, for the

The focus of this study is an analysis of the novel The Brick People published by the Chicano author Alejandro Morales in 1988 and its homonymous documentary film from 2012. Both narratives are based on the same story, namely the lives of Mexican immigrants, who worked as employees in Simons Brickyard in Los Angeles, California, a city originally founded by Mexicans. In the official historiography, this part of Mexican migration in California has been ignored. This study will reveal how the novel and the documentary deal with this gap or interstice in North-American history and how they reflec
