Abstract:

Abstract:

Evans, Lynette, and Lisa Meehan. "Body Dissatisfaction as a Motivator for Weight Loss: Should Assessment of Body Dissatisfaction be Considered in Primary Health Settings for Women Planning to Lose Weight?" Australian Journal of Primary Health 12, no. 3 (2006): 85. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/py06050.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to assess whether body dissatisfaction predicted weight loss in terms of an inverted U relationship. It was predicted that women with high and low body dissatisfaction were less likely to lose weight than women with moderate levels of body dissatisfaction. The study also sought to determine if the number of weight loss attempts, success at past weight loss and self-concept predicted percentage of weight loss in women at six months; and to test whether weight loss led to decreased body dissatisfaction and increased self-concept. Women attempting to lose weight (n = 209) were asked to complete a set of questionnaires at two time points. Results show that women with moderate scores on body dissatisfaction lost more weight than women with higher or lower scores, although this association disappeared when Body Mass Index (BMI) was controlled for in the analyses. Low BMI, success of previous weight loss and low personal self-concept predicted weight loss six months later. Women who lost weight reported lower body dissatisfaction and improved self-concept. It was concluded that, assessing for body dissatisfaction, BMI and weight loss history in the context of primary health settings, may aid in identifying women able to motivate themselves to successfully lose weight in a self-directed manner.

Abstract:
Compared to the indirect tests, the determination of the Los Angeles abrasion loss is time consuming and expensive, and requires a large amount of samples. For this reason, the prediction of Los Angeles abrasion loss from some indirect tests is useful for preliminary studies. In this study, Los Angeles abrasion, noise level (NL) measurement, density, and porosity tests were carried out on 27 different rock types such as igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The test results were evaluated using the simple and multiple regression analysis. A good relation was found between the Los Angeles abrasion loss and the NL. In order to check the possibility of obtaining more significant relations, multiple regression analysis was performed by including density and porosity values. However, the regression analysis showed that the correlation coefficients of the multiple regression equations were slightly higher than that of the simple regression equation. Since the simple regression equation is practical and statistically significant, it is suggested for estimation purpose. In conclusion, it can be said that Los Angeles abrasion loss of aggregates can be reliably estimated from NL measurement.

Abstract:
Retest stability and retest reliability were assessed for the Words-in-Noise Test (WIN) in two experiments involving older listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. In Experiment 1, the 70-item WIN protocol was administered during two sessions 12 months apart to examine retest stability on a sample of 315 veterans from four VA Medical Centers. The mean 50% points on the WIN were 12.5- and 12.8-dB S/N for the two sessions with a critical difference of 3.5 dB and an intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.88. [Normal recognition performance on the WIN (50% point) is ≤6-dB S/N.] In Experiment 2, intra- and inter-session retest reliability was examined for the two 35-word WIN protocols on 96 veterans, 48 of whom had mild-to-severe hearing loss (Group 1) and 48 of whom had a moderate-to-severe hearing loss (Group 2). The mean 50% points on the WIN during the two sessions (separated by 40 days) were 13.0- and 13.4-dB S/N (Group 1) and 15.3- and 15.8-dB S/N (Group 2) with no significant intra-session differences. A 3.1-dB critical difference was calculated for the groups combined with intra-class correlations of 0.89 and 0.91 for Group 1 and Group 2, respectively.

Abstract:
This is the fourth in a series of papers to investigate corrosivity test methods published by the Polyolefins Fire Performance Council, an operating unit of The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. In the first paper, 24 polymeric materials were evaluated for smoke corro sivity following the test method proposed by ASTM E05.21.70 which uses a ra diant combustion/exposure apparatus. The second paper discussed the evalua tion of the same materials using the CNET corrosion test method under consideration by ISO TC61/SC4/WG2 and IEC TC89/WG3 and compared the CNET results with the ASTM E05.21.70 results. In the third paper, the 24 poly meric materials were evaluated using a modified DIN acid gas test method and the results were compared to both the previous ASTM E05.21.70 and CNET results. These commercially available polymeric materials cover a broad range of compositions used for wire and cable insulation and jacketing. In this paper, the same polymeric materials were evaluated following the "Fire Response Standard for Determining the Corrosive Effect of Combustion Products Using a Cone Corrosimeter" proposed by ASTM D09.21.04. In this test method, a specimen is subjected to radiant heat at the recommended heat flux using a spark igniter to ignite combustible vapors. A portion of the pro ducts of decomposition or combustion are channeled in a dynamic mode through an exposure chamber in which corrosion targets are placed until the specimen has lost 70% of its total available mass loss. The mass loss is deter mined from previous experiments at the recommended heat flux. When the specimen has lost 70% of its mass loss, the exposure chamber is sealed and iso lated. The corrosion of the target is determined by exposing the target to the now static combustion products for one hour measured from the start of the test. The target is then placed in an environmental chamber at 75% relative humidity at 23°C for 24 hours. The test method measures the increase in elec trical resistance of a metallic circuit. This increase is related to the decrease in conductive cross-sectional area resulting from metal loss due to corrosion. The increase in electrical resistance of each target is determined throughout the test and correlated to its metal loss. The 24 hour corrosion value is reported as metal loss in angstroms. In this study, heat fluxes of 25 and 50 kW/m2 were used to simulate two dif ferent fire scenarios. All of the materials were run at 50 kW/m2 and 12 materials were run at 25 kW/m 2. Two targets, one with a span of 2,500 Å and the second with a span of 45,000 A were used during each test at each heat flux. The results of this study indicate that the measured corrosivity of materials: (1) does not correlate consistent with the expectations based upon the known chemis try of their compositions (2) varies numerically with the heat flux under which the tests are run and on the target used to obtain the corrosion data and (3) although numerically different, loosely ranks the corrosive potentials of the materials in a consistent manner at both heat fluxes and with both targets. The test protocol does not specify either the heat flux or the targets to be used recommending both in the appendix. As corrosion values are numerically de pendent on the conditions and target used to obtain the data, it is questionable how this test method can be used as a standard for determining and comparing the corrosion potentials of materials without requiring that both the specific heat flux and the target be specified in the test protocol as well as be reported with the results. To complete the review of corrosion test methods, a comparison of the corro sive potentials of the 24 materials using the four test methods will be made and one test method recommended for use as a global standard.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article reports on a research project that uses two innovative heuristics to examine the changes that texts – produced to disseminate new scientific knowledge – undergo when they travel across space and time. A critical analysis of such transformations would enhance our understanding of the processes involved in knowledge dissemination and inform the practice of communicating scientific knowledge to a variety of audiences. Based on our study of 520 closely linked science and science-related sources collected over 12 months in 2016, we argue that when scientific knowledge is re-contextualized to be disseminated to different audiences, it is not simply rephrased or simplified to make it more accessible. Rather, it also undergoes transformational processes that involve issues of social power, authority and access that require new analytical tools to surface more clearly. We report on the methodology of the study with a particular focus on its heuristics, and the transformations that result from a critical analysis of the data collected. We finally discuss a number of theoretical and practical implications in relation to contemporary practices for re-entextualizing scientific knowledge.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the incidence and causes of tooth loss in periodontal subjects from a private practice in Brazil. Two trained examiners extracted data from the records of subjects who sought periodontal treatment from 1980 to 2013. Only records of patients who completed the non-surgical periodontal treatment and had at least one visit for maintenance were included. Data were analyzed by chi-square test, Student’s t-test, Kaplan-Meier survival curve and Cox regression. A total of 3,319 records were reviewed and 737 records included (58.6% women, mean age of 46.6±13.0 years at the beginning of the treatment). Maintenance period ranged from 1 to 33 years (7.4±6 years). During this period, 202 individuals (27.4%) lost 360 teeth, 47.5% of losses within the first five years (n=171). Non-compliers lost more teeth than compliers (p<0.001), respectively 211 and 149 teeth. Regarding reasons of tooth loss, 84 individuals lost 38% of the teeth from periodontal disease progression (n=137). Survival analysis showed that most patients lost only one tooth from periodontal disease, and differences in the survival rates between compliers and non-compliers were observed following the second tooth loss. Approximately one-third of tooth losses was related to periodontal disease progression, and there was stability in time of the proportion of losses from disease progression and other reasons. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that compliant patients in a private practice lose fewer teeth than do non-compliers. Among compliers, periodontal disease progression was not the main cause of tooth loss.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Overweight and obesity are a major public health concern in the United States, including among active duty military personnel. Approximately 51% of active duty personnel are classified as overweight and 15% are classified as obese. This may impact military readiness. The current study aimed to determine if a weight loss intervention impacted fitness test scores among Air Force personnel. Materials and Methods From 2014 to 2016, 204 Air Force members with overweight/obesity were randomized into either a Self-paced or counselor-initiated arm in a weight loss program. Study procedures were approved by the Institutional Review Board of the 59th Medical Wing in San Antonio and were acknowledged by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Fitness test scores from before, during, and after the intervention were used to determine if the intervention resulted in improvements in overall fitness test ratings and scores on individual components of the test. Results Participants who lost at least 5% of their weight had better fitness ratings during the intervention compared to individuals who did not lose 5%. However, in the overall sample, fitness ratings worsened from preintervention to during the intervention, and from during to postintervention. Participants with overweight had better aerobic scores pre- and postintervention as well as better abdominal circumference scores and better fitness test ratings preintervention, during the intervention and postintervention compared to participants with obesity. Conclusions Behavioral weight management interventions that achieve 5% weight loss may help improve military fitness test ratings.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: There are many published studies about loss of consciousness related to general trauma however works on loss of consciousness in respect to orthopedic injuries are scarce. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate whether loss of consciousness worsens the prognosis of patients with orthopedic injuries. Method: A retrospective cohort study of orthopedic traumas was performed in the university Hospital of Base in São José do Rio Preto. All accident victims with injuries of the extremities classified as Score 3 or 4 by the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) were included in this observational quantitative study. Patients with minor injuries and injuries that did not involve the extremities were not included. The association of loss of consciousness at the scene of the accident with evolution to death was investigated. The t-test, chi-squared and Fisher exact tests, and relative risk were used for statistical analysis. An alpha error of 5% (p-value ≤ 0.05) was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 245 patients with ages between 13 and 98 years old and a mean of 45.4 years had extremity AIS scores of 3 or 4. Of these, significantly more men (170 - p< 0.001) suffered this type of injury than women (71). Thirty-six (14.94%) of these patients lost consciousness compared to 205 (85.06%) who did not lose consciousness. The total death rate in this group of patients was 5.39%; 9 (25%) of the 36 patients who lost consciousness and 4 (1.95%) of the 205 who did not lose consciousness died (Fisher exact test: p-value = 0.0001 and relative risk = 12,813 – 95% confidence index: 4,166 to 39,408). Conclusion: Loss of consciousness in patients with orthopedic injuries of the extremities is associated to a higher death rate.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents a test method for determining the thermal loss from a solar central receiver at normal operating conditions. The thermal loss determined by this test method is independent of knowing the incident solar power onto the receiver. Thermal loss includes losses from emitted radiation, convection, and conduction. Reflected radiation is accounted for by an effective solar absorptance. The paper describes the test method and derives the equations used to evaluate the receiver thermal loss from the test.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We study the loss of power of the stratified log-rank test (SLRT) compared to the unstratified log-rank test (ULRT) in the case of a large number of strata with relatively a small number of stratum sizes in terms of the asymptotic distributions of test statistics under local alternatives. The SLRT tends to lose information due to overstratification. It is better to test the homogeneity among strata before using the stratified log-rank test.
