Many studies have shown that the “house money effect” is a robust phenomenon but few scholars explain the mechanism of it well. We suppose the reason for the house money effect is that the ante (starting amount) is from the prior gambling profits, and its potential loss has relatively low psychological value. AbstractI analyse the relative influence of lawmakers before and after a watershed moment in the development of faction institutions: the abolition of legislative service organizations. Blocs of lawmakers in the House of Representatives were afforded official resources to advance their policy agendas between 1979 and 1995. In the wake of the “Republican Revolution,” however, these groups were categorically dismantled. Using a difference-in-difference design, I estimate the individual-level effect of losing congressional resources on relative legislative effectiveness. The results inform our un

In Nathaniel Hawthorne’ s early literary works, “homelessness” was an important concept. It was not only reflected in the conflictions between the individuals and their house and clans, but also in Hawthorne’ s unique understanding of the concept of “home”, which closely combined with various other concepts such as “Family” and “Homeland”. Therefore, the sense of “homeless” cannot be simply understood as people leaving their family and homeland in space, or people losing their house in their real life, but also should be considered from the angle of religion, philosophy and the early American

Abstract When Karl Lagerfeld took over the Maison Chanel in 1983, its founder, Coco Chanel, had been dead for twelve years, and the iconic brand was foundering. Once the epitome of French glamour, history, and feminine luxury, the house was rapidly losing prestige and relevance. Lagerfeld revived the brand through a complex reinterpretation of its iconography, its founder’s persona, and especially its relationship to French identity and patrimoine culturel—cultural patrimony. His reign at Chanel amounted to a de facto commentary on nationality, personality, style, and gender, demonstrating how

The purpose of this article is to show how conceptual systems of classification in the case of Bobo ethnography enter into the construction of social life without narrowly determining people's conduct. The southern Bobo recognise both patrilineal and matrilineal descent categories in which people are included by patrifiliation and matrifiliation. The inclusion occurs at the birth of the person and there are cultural mechanisms that make the change or the misrepresentation of this identity especially difficult. However, the unilineal sets do not frequently materialise as social groups. Agnatic

Time has had varying versions of existence in the modern world. When time is singular, it has the same meaning attributed to by everyone in the same community. It presents the psychic paranoia of Brijmohan, the protagonist who has stolen a dressing table from a Muslim prostitute Naseem Jaan, during communal riots. The Public Policy doctrine is an unruly horse in India, when it comes to the enforcement of domestic and foreign awards. The main objective behind choosing this topic was to shed light on how public policy has been used by the losing party, in delaying the enforcement of arbitral award, which hampers the whole objective of arbitration. Though one may argue that the 2015 Amendment Act has settled all the controversies regarding public policy and enforcement of arbitral award, the author is of the opinion that there are still some areas that are left unexplored by the Arbitration Amendment Act.
