This thesis primarily investigates lossy compression of an inverted index. Two approaches of lossy compression are studied in detail, i.e. (i) term frequency quantization, and (ii) document pruning. This research focuses on the quantification of image quality in lossy compressed images, exploring the impact of digital artefacts and scene characteristics upon image quality evaluation. A subjective paired comparison test was implemented to assess perceived quality of JPEG 2000 against baseline JPEG over a range of different scene types. Lossy channel systems were originally introduced to model communication protocols. It gave birth to a complexity class wich remained scarcely undersood for a long time. In this thesis we study some of the most important gaps. In particular, we bring matching upper and lower bounds for the time complexity. Then we describe a new proof tool : the Post Embedding Problem (PEP) which is a simple problem, closely related to the Post Correspondence Problem, and complete for this complexity class. Finally, we study PEP, its variants and the languages of solutions of PEP on which we provide complexity

For several years, microwave engineers have dreamed of using non-ionising electromagnetic waves in medical imaging applications. The rate of evolution of microwave techniques for medical application has been immense and shows no signs of relenting. Since the limitations of X-ray mammography are well reported, alternative techniques using microwaves for breast cancer detection are developed. Some of these techniques have progressed to the point where positive clinical experience has emerged.
