This thesis primarily investigates lossy compression of an inverted index. Two approaches of lossy compression are studied in detail, i.e. (i) term frequency quantization, and (ii) document pruning. In addition, a technique for document pruning, i.e. the entropy-based method, is applied to re-rank retrieved documents as query-independent knowledge. Based on the quantization theory, we examine how the number of quantization levels for coding the term frequencies affects retrieval performance. Three methods are then proposed for the purpose of reducing the quantization distortion, including (i)

Abstract:
An early career as a theatre director had a fundamental, life-long impact on film director Joseph Losey, a factor consistently underestimated in critical and academic assessments of his filmmaking. Losey's stage work in 1930s New York bore the imprint of some of the early twentieth century's major theatre practitioners. He would translate their ideas into a distinctive cinematic language. This study regards Losey's film output as a cohesive whole, challenging commentators' habitual practice of dividing the director's career into discrete, often incongruous, chronological phases; in place of a

Doutoramento em Engenharia Eletrotécnica<br>The performance of real-time networks is under continuous improvement as a result of several trends in the digital world. However, these tendencies not only cause improvements, but also exacerbates a series of unideal aspects of real-time networks such as communication latency, jitter of the latency and packet drop rate. This Thesis focuses on the communication errors that appear on such realtime networks, from the point-of-view of automatic control. Specifically, it investigates the effects of packet drops in automatic control over fieldbuses
