Abstract:
The first topic presented in the dissertation thesis is determination of isoprostanes as markers of oxidative stress and other compounds affected by presence of oxidative stress. Isoprostanes iPF2-III, iPF2-VI, iPF2-VI, astaxanthin and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially arachidonic acid (AA) were monitored in Atlantic salmon eggs (Salmo salar). Methods for the determination of these compounds have been developed and optimized using chromatographic separation coupled to conventional or mass spectrometric detection. Freshly laid eggs, eyed embryos and non-viable eggs were used to test a general hypothesis that egg viability can be affected by susceptibility to oxidative stress, either through the specific fatty acid concentration and/or the antioxidant capacity of the eggs. Levels of isoprostanes and arachidonic acid (AA) were significantly higher in non-viable eggs than in control (eyed embryos) as well as relative abundance of PUFA. While no difference of isoprostanes was found between freshly laid and control those from the Atlantic stock except iPF2-VI which was observed under the LOQ in the control. Higher levels of PUFA and AA in comparison with the control were observed in the freshly laid eggs. However, the only statistically significant difference was observed in the amount of astaxanthin. Different levels of PUFA and astaxanthin may be related to their biochemical consumption during the development of eggs. This work evaluated potential effect on the viability of eggs Salmo salar due to the presence of oxidative stress. The monitoring of mycotoxins in food and feed was the subject of the second topic. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi. They are ubiquitous undesirable natural contaminants that are toxic for humans and animals. Today are known more than 500 mycotoxins. However, only few of them are regulated by the European Union. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was asked by the European Commission to provide a scientific opinion on other mycotoxins for which statutory limits could be developed. In this study is proposed simultaneous screening allowing fast, reliable and sensitive approach, identification and quantification of 17 mycotoxins in food and feed sample. The method includes both mycotoxins regulated by the EU and selected mycotoxins required by the EFSA (aflatoxins, deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, zearalenone, fumonisin, ochratoxin A, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, enniatins and beauvericin). Analytes are isolated by the modified QuEChERS method. For separation and target mycotoxins detection, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC –MS/MS) was employed. The method also allows determination of ergot alkaloids (ergocornine, ergosine, ergocryptine, ergocristine and their respective epimers). The developed method was used either for monitoring mycotoxins and ergot alkaloids in feed and raw materials and barley and malt prepared from it.

Bwele, Guillaume. "Logos et modernité." Paris 10, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA100122.

Abstract:
The object of the thesis is to redefine modernity and to establish that, as a synthesis of the rational and the historical, of the eternal and the transitory, modernity is opened on evolutive human phenomena founded on alterity, "logos" of which is characterised by relativity. That leads to cross over all pretentions to achieved totalities, all "logocentrisms" which use metaphores of origin and end, and to avoid either collectivism of individualism. Consequently we formulate the hypothesis that modernity is not going to an end but rather to its complete achievement through the amplification of the recognition of alternity as ego non-ego in the societies and in the world, even if this is through crisis and violence

Abstract:

Plato, Aristotle and the Neo-Platonists have traditionally been considered to be the main sources for interpreting Parmenides The Poem. However, in the last century, the logical and filological dilemmas regarding the concept of being have begun to draw the attention of other scholars seeking more precise interpretations of The Poem, such as ancient philosophy commentator Charles Kahn and analytical philosophers Frege and Russell. In this paper I will argue that philosophers Gorgias and Melisso offer a more accurate interpretation of the concept of being discussed in Parmenides original text. Consequently, it will also be shown that in order to understand precisely The Poem, it is necessary to focus on the interpretations drawn by the two pre-Socratic philosophers supra-cited regarding the Poem, rather than to emphasize on the analysis made by Plato and Aristotle. The main reason supporting this argument that will be presented is that the works of such pre-Socratic philosophers were written in a time period much closer to the one of Parmenides than the works of Plato and Aristotle were. In order to build my argument I will first analyze the filological meanings of the concept of being. Then I will scrutinize the formulations of this concept as Kahn presents them. After that, I will examine the formulations of the concept of being in the works of both Melisso and Gorgias. Finally, I will compare and apply all of these formulations and meanings to Parmenides original text, and therefore conclude my argument.

Abstract:
This paper examines nostalgia in photo-poetry book Nostos, and nostalgia’s existence as a theoretical global condition arising from displacement, looking at nostalgia specifically not as a yearning for home, but a yearning for a lost sense of feeling at home. It traces the lineage of image-text hybrid art practices and examines the significance of conveying meaning through both synergistically. It studies the psychoanalytic process of transforming loss into object, or absence into presence, ultimately using the object as a lens to view oneself and the way in which nostalgia manifests itself.

Abstract:
Modern analytical transmission electron microscopes are able to gather a large amount of information from the sample in the form of multi-dimensional datasets. Although the analytical procedures developed for single spectra can be extended to the analysis of multi-dimensional datasets, for an optimal use of this highly redundant information, more advanced techniques must be deployed. In this context, we investigate alternatives to the standard quantification methods and seek to optimise the experimental acquisition for accurate analysis. This addresses the current challenges facing the electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) community, for whom beam damage and contamination are often the limiting factors. EELS elemental quantification by the standard integration method is limited to well-behaved cases. As an alternative we use curve fitting which, as we show, can overcome most of the limitations of the standard method. Furthermore, we extend the method to obtain, in addition to elemental maps, the first bonding maps at the nanoscale. A major difficulty when analysing multi-dimensional datasets of samples of unknown composition is that the quantitative methods require as an input the composition of the sample. We show that blind source separation methods enable fast and accurate analysis of multi-dimensional datasets without defining a model. In optimal conditions these methods are capable of extracting signals from the dataset corresponding to the different chemical compounds in the sample and their distribution

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine individuals’ perceptions of weight loss and weight loss methods. Respondents were employees and customers attending health/wellness events at local supermarkets in June, July, and August 2019. Participants completed a survey to assess their understanding and perceptions of weight loss and methods used to achieve weight loss. The majority of participants were white females, 60 years or older with a college degree and a Body Mass Index (BMI) classified as overweight or obese. Data revealed most participants had a variety of misconceptions relating to weight loss and weight loss methods that were obscure and fad-diet oriented, including low-carbohydrate diets. Participants did understand benefits of weight loss but expressed maintaining weight loss was a challenge. These findings suggest that fad diets are alluring to individuals and individuals did not incorporate evidence-based behavior changes to promote or sustain weight loss.

Abstract:
This paper will raise issues concerning to a phenomenological ethics. For that, we will seek to find subsidies through the passage of the logos of the aesthetic world to the logos of the cultural world in Merleau-Ponty. One common thread will be determined by this philosopher, with the intent to understand the original nature in the life-world. This thread is called original presence which, in turn, can be identified in both the aesthetic logos as in cultural logos. Merleau-Ponty makes a profound analysis of the studies raised by Husserl, namely a later Husserl, where we find the discovery of a phenomenology of life. Through the discovery of reflexive-body, Merleau-Ponty celebrate the incarnation of the phenomenology of life raised by Husserl. These two philosophers give a strong emphasis facing our attitude toward the opening of the world, the other and the logical objectivity. To better understand this philosophical perspective, we have the contribution of Waldenfels that will extend the concept of attitude and will make, thus, a phenomenological ethic more evident, where this attitude needs to give an answer or rather can not not respond, as the opening of the world create in us a challenge of which I am led to a concrete attitude. This challenge is generated by claims that dialogue with the law (rule) and justice (ethics). This dialogue, in principle, generates a strangeness that drives us to a threshold, creating a gap, allowing a new constitution process. When Waldenfels says that the Ethos begins on the plain of the senses, wants to talk that what affects us depends on the body itself that is affected and that what affects expresses sense for us. In other words, what claims out to us as the possibility of meaning indeed passes through the plain of the senses, must be understood and lived by the own body. In Waldenfels we can find a clear responsive ethics and an ethics of the senses, allowing the construction of a phenomenological ethics.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Electrical Engineering))--Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town, 2000.
This document gives a report on the research that has been done to simulate hearing loss. People working with the hearing impaired have no idea of what and/or how the hearing impaired person hears sound. An instrument that enables a normal hearing person to hear what a hearing impaired person hears, is referred to in this document as a Hearing Loss Simulator (HLS). An investigation of the feasibility and practicability of the abovementioned instrument, has led to the development of the HLS by making use of a distinct type of technology called Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology. Before hearing loss can be simulated, the hearing loss first needs to be determined. A study of different procedures and methods for screening hearing has led to the incorporation of an existing instrument called an Audiometer. An audiometer is an instrument that determines the hearing loss by making use of pure tone sine waves. The results are then plotted on a graph called an Audiogram. The results of other methods that determine the hearing loss can also be transferred to the Audiogram. The Audiogram's information which is, in fact, the frequency response of the ear, is stored in a computer and is utilized to realize the HLS function. Six different DSP based methods were studied to shape any audio information according to a specific frequency response. The optimum method was identified and then implemented. The various methods are the following: Filter bank method Inverse Discrete Fourier Transforms (IDFT) method Inverse Fast Fourier Transforms (IFFT) method Chirp-z method Wavelet method Yule-walker method The ITFT method was identified as the optimum method and was therefore implemented. The algorithm to realize this method, was carried out by doing the IFFT calculation on computer and subsequently doing the filtering on a DSP processor called an ADSP-2181 processor. The audio information under investigation is fed into the instrument, it is then filtered according to the audiogram information and then sent out again. Any normal hearing person who wants to investigate the hearing impairment of the hearing impaired person can listen to sound reproduction through either a set of headphones or through a free field. This process is referred to in this dissertation as Hearing Loss Simulation.

Abstract:
Szczecin is a city in a western Poland which after WW II was damaged, lost its identity and inhabitants. Polish-German border was moved to the west of Oder river. Most of Pomerania, including Szczecin was eventually given to Poland. About 90 precent of the city centre was damaged, bombings took away city’s identity.According to Rossi the city is always considered as a man-made object and the past will always be partly experienced and gives meaning to permanence. So I wondered how much of past is still present in Szczecin? The wounds healed after many years, but what is there left of the city that it used to be?During analyse of city urban structure I found public buildings that were demolished and  forgotten  and  reconstructed  them  from  pictures,  as  pictures  are  the  only  evi-dence of their presence. In Szczecin today there is no theather building, no exhibition hall in the centre, no synagogue building, no panoramic cinema and no public transportation office which is also a public space.Frgaments of memories brought together in one place  are forming the memorial of the city’s past fulfilling the gap between the past and present. Not many of city’s inhabitants know about the fact that the city used to have theatre in  the  place  where  where  now  highway  enters  the  city  centre,  panorama  viewing  building in the park, exhibition hall surrounded by townhouses, public transportation office next to city’s central transportation hub or a synagogue in a place where the library is.

Abstract:
My work is concerned with our perceptions of climate change and our relationship with the environment. Scientific study of historical worldwide climate data shows that global temperatures have been steadily rising for at least the last one hundred years. The concept of the anthropocene—a particular geologic epoch defined by human presence—links climate change specifically to humans and their impact on the environment. Even confronted with the data, many feel disconnected from climate change. While one can detect temperature change of single degrees over the course of seconds or minutes, it is difficult to feel this kind of temperature change over the course of decades. My work for the past three years has been concerned with questions related to how we feel and figure environmental loss. Crafting, mourning, and emotion have continually cropped up in my work as ways of apprehending environmental loss.

Abstract:

Calligraphy in the Arabic language is an ancient form of communication and a method of documenting history. The Arabic script started in a very simple form with characters similar to each other. However, through the years, many developments have occurred within this form of communication. These developments were created by several artists and calligraphers, which resulted in generating a variety of styles of scripts with unique treatments. Since the twentieth century, these traditional calligraphic styles have started to lose their importance, and the use of modern Arabic calligraphy is becoming more dominant, especially in the fields of modern design such as graphic design. However, traditional Arabic calligraphy still has a noticeable impact on modern Arabic designs. This thesis introduces a new way of understanding the influence of traditional Arabic calligraphy on modern Arabic calligraphic-based logo designs. The process is accomplished by explaining and substantiating these influences in a step-by-step study applied on six selected Arabic calligraphic-based logos. As a conclusion, the study confirms a strong influence of traditional Arabic calligraphy on modern Arabic calligraphic-based logo designs.

The present work highlights the importance of Dialogue in dealing with situations of crisis, and human conflicts. It has a starting point in some ideas of David Bohm, and in so doing, it presents itself with the challenge of testing the premise that dialogical strategies, of thought and action, can make the human choices inherent to those situations, more coherent and creative. They also allow us to elucidate and grasp them, towards broader comprehension and resolution, while keeping the framework of consistent assessment. However, we believe that said strategies are not, necessarily, problem solvers. With that in mind, we expanded the notion of Dialogue , systematizing dialogical visions of the world, derived from the ideas of David Bohm, Paulo Freire and Mikhail Bakhtin, in which they give priority to the Dialogue component, in all human relations within crucial contexts. From the elaboration of that systemic and dialogical interface, in which Dialogue appears as common theme, and pervasive tool, we detected the emerging of ancillary themes such as Liberty , Consciousness , Creativity , Ethics and Responsibility . We see these themes as ways of comprehending Life, as each one embodies interests, needs and shared human motivations. We have articulated them as a network, and added to that the need of Reflection in conjunction with Dialogue as a watchful call for noticing the incoherence

Abstract:
Although Parmenides does not present a strongly negative connotation of the mythical discourse of the poetic tradition, as Xenophanes does, there is no less truth to the fact that we witness with him a true transmutation of the Homeric and Hesiodic discourse, especially regarding the complex problem of truth, deceit and verisimilitude. The philosophical originality of Parmenides lies not only in the elaboration of a logos that would, for the first time in Western Thought, embody the idea of a personal critical reason”, capable of judging” the refutation pronounced by the authority of a Master of Truth”, nor in the institution of a gnōmē (judgement) capable of choosing between things with more or less verisimilitude, but also in the fact of undertaking, long before Plato –and in a different manner than in the Sophist–, a reflection on truth and error that is guided by the question of the good and bad combinations, the good and bad separations.

Abstract:
LOTOS (Language Of Temporal Ordering Specification) is a Formal description Technique (FDT) based on the temporal ordering of observational behaviour. It was developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) for the specification of OSI (Open System Interconnection) services and protocols. This thesis presents a method of translating a LOTOS specification written in any given style into either of two simpler forms, known as the Monolithic Style Specification and the Parameterized Tree. A method of applying LOTOS expansion theorems to derive an intermediary form, known as the Behaviour Tree, is described first. A Reduction Algorithm, based on a subset of congruence rules, has been developed to provide a means to eliminate superfluous internal events and branches in the Behaviour Tree prior to conversion to either of the two simpler forms. Methods of transforming the reduced Behaviour Tree to either the Monolithic Style Specification ar Parameterized Tree have been developed. A tool has been developed to demonstrate these concepts. To show the application of this tool, we discuss a method for obtaining test cases from a Monolithic Style Specification. Finally, a method to translate such test cases into TTCN form has been outlined.

Abstract:
Timethreads are a new notation for visual description of the different causality paths of a system. They illustrate causality sequences of activities through systems. A design process based on the use of timethreads has already been defined. The Formal Description Technique LOTOS (Language Of Temporal Ordering Specification) is a specification language based on the temporal ordering of observational behaviour. This thesis aims at the integration of formal methods in the design of real-time and distributed systems by presenting a LOTOS interpretation of timethreads. With the help of a timethread grammar and a suite of techniques, LOTOS specifications are derived from timethread maps. The designer can then 'play' with the design by validating the specifications during the early stages of requirements capture and analysis.

Abstract:
The dynamic behaviour of a LOTOS specification can be described as a tree, called behaviour tree, where the nodes represent the states of the behaviour, and the branches represent the possible next actions. Unfortunately, the behaviour tree for a realistic size LOTOS specification can be very large and often has no finite representation. This is the major limitation for the existing LOTOS verification techniques. The main goal of this thesis is to provide a new behaviour tree exploration technique, called Goal-Oriented Execution, that can be used to check properties of LOTOS specifications by narrowing exploration to a meaningfully selected subset of the tree. In this execution technique, the system derives traces (i.e paths in the behaviour tree) satisfying certain assertions that express temporal ordering of actions and data values properties. Goal-Oriented Execution is a combination of three techniques. The first technique is an automatically generated ADT evaluator/narrower engine. It is capable of evaluating an expression based on a rewriting rule approach, borrowed from functional programming, and deriving solutions to a set of constraints using a narrowing technique, borrowed from logic programming. The second technique is a static analyzer that determines where the given assertions are likely to hold, producing static information called static derivation paths. The third technique, called guided-inference system, involves a new type of inference rules that derive traces using static derivation paths to resolve most non-determinism. Implementation issues of this technique are also discussed, and examples of its usage are provided. The technique is now included in ELUDO, the University of Ottawa LOTOS interpreter.

Abstract:
LOTOS (Language Of Temporal Ordering Specification) is a Formal Description Technique (FDT) based on the temporal ordering of observational behaviour. It was developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) for the specification of OSI (Open Systems Interconnections) services and protocols. CTL (Computation Tree Logic) is a branching-time temporal logic, which can be used to express properties of the system being designed. Efficient algorithms were reported in the literature which make it possible to check whether a given behaviour tree enjoys a property expressed in CTL. Such algorithms constitute what is commonly called "model checking". The topic of this thesis is the design and implementation of a model checker for LOTOS specifications called LMC (LOTOS Model Checker). LMC allows users to check whether a specification behaves correctly. To do so, LMC requires a graph model obtained by expanding the LOTOS specification symbolically, and a set of correctness properties describing the requirements behaviour of the system to be checked. These properties are expressed in the branching temporal logic CTL. We present an introduction to formal description techniques along with a review of some relevant existing work. We then present the technical framework of the branching temporal logic CTL, and discuss some important aspects such as correctness properties of concurrent systems and their classification. We discuss the algorithms used in our model checker together with their application to LOTOS. Finally, we use two examples to illustrate the validation methodology.

Full text
Abstract:
As the demand of oil and gas is increasing, using the existing reservoirs more efficiently as well as searching for new reservoirs is mandatory. Most undiscovered reservoirs are in deep or ultra-deep offshore locations, where drilling to such targets are very difficult with the available fluid circulation technology, since there exists a significant frictional pressure loss due to extreme long wellbores. In order to reduce the frictional pressure losses inside the drillstring, frictional drag reducers are used. Frictional drag reducers are mostly high molecular weight linear polymer molecules and can be used with water or hydrocarbon based solvents. The system used in this study is Baroid EZ-Mud water solutions. Baroid EZ-Mud is a liquid polymer emulsion containing partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide / polyacrylate (PHPA) co-polymer. This study aims to observe the performance of EZ-Mud as a frictional drag reducer. For this purpose, a flow loop that consisted of a circular pipe where the frictional pressure losses can be observed under various flow rates and concentrations is developed. Pipe flow experiments were performed using water-based mud generated using different concentrations of Baroid EZ-Mud at different flow rates. Differential pressure values were recorded for each run. Rheological properties of each mud sample were determined using Fann (Couette) viscometer in order to determine the theoretical frictional pressure losses. Theoretical and measured frictional pressure losses were compared. Results showed that, as the concentration of EZ-Mud was increased, considerable frictional drag reduction as high as 60% was observed. Based on the experimental data obtained from the flow loop using EZ-Mud with different concentrations, a friction factor correlation as a function of Reynolds Number and EZ-Mud concentration is developed. The proposed correlation performance was also compared with the existing correlations from the literature. It has been observed that, frictional pressure losses using the developed friction factor could be estimated within an error range of maximum 15 %, whereas, the existing models could not predict frictional pressure losses as accurate as the proposed model.

Marsili, Aurélien. "Identification of LHC beam loss mechanism : a deterministic treatment of loss patterns." Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00807367.

Full text
Abstract:
CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest machine ever built, with a total circumference of 26.7 km; and it is the most powerful accelerator ever, both in beam energy and beam intensity. The main magnets are superconducting, keeping the particles into two counter circulating beams, which collide in four interaction points. CERN and the LHC will be described in chap. 1. The superconducting magnets of the LHC have to be protected against particle losses. Depending on the number of lost particles, the coils of the magnets will become normal conducting and/or will be damaged. To avoid these events a beam loss monitoring (BLM) system was installed to measure the particle loss rates. If the predefined safe thresholds of loss rates are exceeded, the beams are directed out of the accelerator ring towards the beam dump. The detectors of the BLM system are mainly ionization chambers located outside of the cryostats. In total, about 3500 ionisation chambers are installed. Further challenges include the high dynamical range of losses (chamber currents ranging between 2 pA and 1 mA). The BLM system will be further described in chap. 2. The subject of this thesis is to study the loss patterns and find the origin of the losses in a deterministic way, by comparing measured losses to well understood loss scenarios. This is done through a case study: different techniques were used on a restrained set of loss scenarios, as a proof of concept of the possibility to extract information from a loss profile. Finding the origin of the losses should allow acting in response. A justification of the doctoral work will be given at the end of chap. 2. Then, this thesis will focus on the theoretical understanding and the implementation of the decomposition of a measured loss profile as a linear combination of the reference scenarios; and the evaluation of the error on the recomposition and its correctness. The principles of vector decomposition are developed in chap. 3. An ensemble of well controlled loss scenarios (such as vertical and horizontal blow-up of the beams or momentum offset during collimator loss maps) has been gathered, in order to allow the study and creation of reference vectors. To achieve the Vector Decomposition, linear algebra (matrix inversion) is used with the numeric algorithm for the Singular Value Decomposition. Additionally, a specific code for vector projection on a non-orthogonal basis of a hyperplane was developed. The implementation of the vector decomposition on the LHC data is described in chap. 4. After this, the use of the decomposition tools systematically on the time evolution of the losses will be described: first as a study of the variations second by second, then by comparison to a calculated default loss profile. The different ways to evaluate the variation are studied, and are presented in chap. 5. The next chapter (6) describes the gathering of decomposition results applied to beam losses of 2011. The vector decomposition is applied on every second of the ''stable beans'' periods, as a study of the spatial distribution of the loss. Several comparisons of the results given by the decompositions with measurements from other LHC instruments allowed different validations. Eventually, a global conclusion on the interest of the vector decomposition is given. Then, the extra chapter in Appendix A describes the code which was developed to access the BLM data, to represent them in a meaningful way, and to store them. This included connecting to different databases. The whole instrument uses ROOT objects to send SQL queries to the databases, as well as java API, and is coded in Python. A short glossary of the acronyms used here can be found at the end, before the bibliography.

Abstract:
Psychosocial differences between weight loss maintainers and weight loss non-maintainers were compared at least one year after reaching a medically approved weight goal through a medically supervised weight loss program. Research questions addressed differences between groups on the dimensions of somatization, obsessive/compulsive issues, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, ability to resolve past emotional issues, social interpersonal relationships, and tolerance of ambiguity. The all-female sample consisted of maintainers of weight loss (N=30), non-maintainers (N=33), psychotherapy maintainers (N=14), and psychotherapy non-maintainers (N=ll). Research instruments administered were the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior, Personal Orientation Inventory, and Budner Scale for Tolerance/Intolerance of Ambiguity. To determine differences between groups, a t test was performed on data relating to the maintaining and non-maintaining groups. An analysis of variance was performed on data related to the maintaining, non-maintaining, psychotherapy maintaining, and psychotherapy non-maintaining groups. An intercorrelation matrix was completed for all variables. Non-maintainers of weight loss had significantly more difficulty with somatic problems as indicated in the results of both the t test and the analysis of variance (p < .009, p < .02, respectively). Non-maintainers expressed more complaints which focused on cardio-vascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and somatic equivalents of anxiety (headaches, pain, discomfort of the gross musculature). An analysis of variance showed non-maintainers (p < .05) to be significantly less effective in resolving past emotional issues than maintainers, psychotherapy maintainers, and psychotherapy non-maintainers. Non-maintainers were more burdened by guilt, regrets, and resentments from the past. Results of the analysis of variance indicated that psychotherapy maintainers (p < .03) were more socially adjusted than maintainers, non-maintainers, and psychotherapy non-maintainers. Inclusion and control subscales characterized psychotherapy maintainers to be more socially adaptable and flexible. They assumed responsibility without support of others and were less burdened with fears of helplessness and incompetence.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.B. in Humanities and Engineering)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Humanities, Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies, 2012.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 83).
Catalogue of a Loss is a collection of sixty-two prose poems written within the past year and half. The work is printed on 4x6 cards. Each poem may be read individually from a single card or the poems can be read in sequences. Each poem maps to at least one prescribed sequence that is visually indicated on the card(s). In the case that the poem maps to multiple sequences that poem is reprinted so that each subset it belongs to may be individually represented. Within this document, I've provided re-printings of the cards along with four of the larger possible sequences I have framed for the reader (indicated by red / violet / cyan/ gold). There are no duplicates within this set therefore the described cross-referencing in which a single poem maps to multiple sequences is not represented. The reader is encouraged to make what he will of the sequences: my intention is that the relationships suggested by the proposed reading-sequences do not establish a single structure designed to constrain the reader but offer, instead, multiple structures that will inspire new relationships of the reader's own making. The work is a memoir-of-sorts. I began working on this piece in January 2011 knowing that I would write about my father who died in January 2007-ten years after he first began experiencing symptoms of dementia. In that time I took off the Fall semester and lived in San Francisco. Writing this work caused my own re-examination on life with my parents, life at MIT and life out in the world. The work examines my life at an intimate distance. Even the colors that I used to encode the poems are taken from our family portrait. The card-form emulates exactly how I was remembering my past: connections were formed and then blurred; random details were vivid and unforgettable while others completely disappeared. The resulting work explores the lines between art and life, between art-making and life-making, between past and present, between solitude and loneliness, between intellectual exile and the comforts of home, between "family" self and "independent" self. In the sixty-seven cards represented within this document are the past five years of my life.

Rocha, Watt Dionea. "Tracing loss, touching absence." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2017. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/2846/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research considers an artist’s encounter with works of art that carry or evoke the affective traces of an experience of loss. Examining images, photographs and sculptural objects and installations that inscribe and in turn expose absence in presence, this research through writing as a practice simultaneously investigates and performs the work as a response to loss. The thesis proposes that the work of art evokes loss by materialising absence. The work of art, like the work of mourning, works by inscribing a trace of the affective experience – the absence of the presence of the other. It is through the affective materiality of the work of art that we come to sense loss; when confronted with, and wounded by, the inscription of absence and its powerful relation to time. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, the study shows how loss can silence but also move us to create a new language when existing forms of representation fail to signify. Shifting between asignification and signification, the new poetic language carries an imprint of the body; it reconnects to affects to inscribe loss. In the languages of writing, photography and sculpture, I suggest, art attempts to give shape to what cannot be said, to what cannot be shown, to what resists representation. Through close readings of works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Louise Bourgeois, the thesis suggests that by resisting representation these artists create works in which textile materials indicate a fundamental encounter with a material sign that gives rise to affects. I analyse works in which fabric is infused with the trace of an absent other. The analysis of contemporary works rubs against the narratives of the origins of art in the ‘Corinthian Maid’ and in the history of prehistoric handprints on cave walls, both of which reveal the gesture of inscribing a presence that anticipates absence. The study draws on philosophy to consider that what is inscribed is not only the absence of a presence but existence; what is inscribed is the vestige or trace of a ‘passing through the world’. The research is generated by a transformative encounter with loss and with art that invites yet resists interpretation; an affective encounter through which what is other can touch, and what touches can be thought. Art, I suggest (after Deleuze), can move us to recover the creative potency of thought in order to inscribe the singularity of the encounter. To write through loss is to write what is impossible to represent and yet insists on being written.

Childress, Lawrence. "The Loss-Processing Framework." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2021. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3896.

Full text
Abstract:
The circumstances of responding to loss due to human death are among the most stressful experiences encountered in life. Although grief’s symptoms are typically considered essential to their gradual diminishment, possible negative impacts of complications related to grief are also well known, and have been associated with detriments to mental and physical health. Grief, however, can also generate transformative positive change. Thus, albeit ineludible, responding to loss is not uniformly experienced, expressed, or understood. It is also culturally-shaped, making attempts to define “normal” grief, as well as to label some grief “abnormal”—and to medicalize it—possibly problematic. Bereavement (the situation surrounding a death) and mourning (the publicly expressed response to loss due to death) are changing. Some of these changes (e.g., the increase in hospice care settings prior to deaths, and alterations in the ritual responses following all deaths—irrespective of their context) may have important implications for avoiding grief’s possible complications and for promoting its potential benefits. An improved alignment of grief theory, research, and practice is warranted; but theories of grief are diverse, and historically have not been empirically well-supported. This research articulates a new grief model, the loss-processing framework, featuring three dimensional components (perception, orientation, and direction). As a first step toward validation of the framework, also included is an empirical study examining retrospective descriptive reports of adult loss response relating to the first of these three dimensions (perception). As an interpretive, translational approach to understanding grief, the loss-processing framework may serve to positively impact grieving, health, and life quality.

Abstract:
How to Factor Loss is a collection of poems and translations prefaced by a critical paper over Robert Hass's “Meditation at Lagunitas.” The preface, “A Sensuous Theory, A Sensuous Poem,” explores how Hass merges the discourses of theory and poetry to create a poem that hangs suspended between a confidence and an anxiety about language. The poems in this thesis are primarily responses to finitude. The first section turns toward an “other” as a strategy of placating desire and of reaching both inward and outward. The second section explores the potential failures of art as a means of touching objects. The final section acknowledges that finitude is the condition of humankind, and it turns toward a more tender language, one that embraces limitations and is filled with something like faith. The collection is followed by an appendix which contains translations of several poems by René Guy Cadou and Georg Trakl.

From the complex concept of justice developed by Aristotle, the object of justice is delineated, distinguishing it from morality, with the objective of understanding the classical conception of law, considering its object, concept and sources. For this, the Aristotelian conceptions of the term "justice" are worked out: its absolute and particular, precisely political, meaning, differentiating it from domestic justice and classifying it as distributive, corrective and reciprocal. It follows the delimitation of the object of law as part of justice, the identification of its sources: natural and positive law, and finally, we come to the concept of equity as justice in the case in point and its methodological reflex in the process of appropriate application of positive law and integration of gaps. Then, it returns to the analysis of the modern conception of law, following the same methodology initially adopted, starting from the delimitation of its object, concept and sources, arriving at a diverse concept of equity assumed by the modern juridical philosophy. Finally, it is tried to demonstrate the process of return of the equity, in the classic terms, like justice in the case in concrete, to the modern juridical thought, from the material point of view, evidencing the progressive detachment of the science of the law with the society and the necessity In the construction of a legal theory that encompasses values, especially justice, and responds to the ever-changing social desires; As a methodological point of view, identifying the insufficiency of the formal logical method as the only instrument available to the judge and the progressive introduction of the dialectical process of justice construction case by case and rhetoric as an instrument of motivation and persuasion of the judge, without neglecting what is necessary Justice and legal certainty. As a conclusion, it is tried to demonstrate how the process of absorption of the equity in the classic molds caused new contours to the legal science, reflecting in the concept of law, in the identification of its sources, in the object and in the methodological aspect

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on modelling the distributions of loss in consumer credit arrangements, both at an individual level and at a portfolio level, and how these might be influenced by loan-specific factors and economic factors. The thesis primarily aims to examine how these factors can be incorporated into a credit risk model through logistic regression models and threshold regression models. Considering the fact that the specification of a credit risk model is influenced by its purpose, the thesis considers the IFRS 7 and IFRS 9 accounting requirements for impairment disclosure as well as Basel II regulatory prescriptions for capital requirements. The thesis presents a critique of the unexpected loss calculation under Basel II by considering the different ways in which loans can correlate within a portfolio. Two distributions of portfolio losses are derived. The Vašíček distribution, which is the assumed in Basel II requirements, was originally derived for corporate loans and was never adapted for application in consumer credit. This makes it difficult to interpret and validate the correlation parameters prescribed under Basel II. The thesis re-derives the Vašíček distribution under a threshold regression model that is specific to consumer credit risk, thus providing a way to estimate the model parameters from observed experience. The thesis also discusses how, if the probability of default is modelled through logistic regression, the portfolio loss distribution can be modelled as a log-log-normal distribution.
