Assessment of fabric handle relies on the feel of humans. The precision of the results greatly depends on the size of the fabric sets. The precision decreases with increasing number of samples as a consequence of assessors' fatigue and loss of concentration. Given the importance of handle assessment and in the absence of guidelines that assist assessment of large sample sets, this study proposes a comprehensive approach for testing large sets of fabrics by dividing them into several testing sessions, each of 10 samples at most. AbstractMigration implies both benefits and costs. The latter include a possible breakdown of social networks, and thus a loss of social capital. Although there is some literature on the evolution of family networks after migration, not as much is known about friendship. This article assesses the quality of friendships between German emigrants and their friends who stayed in Germany. In particular, it asks three research questions: (a) How does the quality of relationships with friends in Germany differ from the quality of other relationships after migration? (b) How is friendship quality after migration related to socio-demographic or socio-economic factors? And (c) is there a link between friendship quality and the subjective well-being of emigrants? Results indicate that friendship quality measured as frequency of contact with friends falls in the middle range of contact frequency, as emigrants typically have more contact with partners and children, but less contact with some other relatives, compared to close friends. Furthermore, several determinants of contact frequency (e.g. gender, age, length of stay and household constellation) can be identified and correlations with various aspects of subjective well-being were found.

Abstract Reame reflects on her role as an early researcher on tampon safety and assesses the climate of vigilance today, demonstrating that 30 years after the discovery of the link between tampons and toxic shock syndrome, efforts to improve tampon safety protections have languished. In drawing on her past research, Reame shows how critical it is to innovate research methods and materials and to ensure that federal standards for tampon absorbency ranges and nomenclature, as well as testing procedures for tampon safety, don’t lose ground. Reame draws attention to the fact that tampon producers continue to introduce various product innovations with little government oversight for testing standards or ingredient disclosure. She concludes by offering suggestions for crucial ways in which activists in the ‘second menstrual moment’ can partner with the federal research enterprise to improve the research ‘vagenda’ in menstrual health.

AbstractChilean society is confronted with increasing risk from wildfires. Individual rather than collective risk management solutions predominate. Large forest companies, for example, reduce the probability of wildfires affecting their tree plantations with hierarchically-ordered management routines. Additionally, they purchase insurance policies to protect themselves from economic losses. Other stakeholders in the Chilean forest regions, however, do not have the same access to these forms of risk management due to the high degree of technical knowledge and organizational competences required. In his contribution, Michael Handke assesses the strengths and weaknesses of interacting hierarchical and market forms of risk management and calls for a deeper geographical approach to risk governance. He reveals that detailed geographical knowledge of wildfires is explicitly decontextualized and even ignored in current risk management practices. As a result, essential knowledge about the causes and effects of arson, which seem to be on the rise in Chile, is lost.

Chapter 3 analyses the electoral consequences of the UUP’s support for the Belfast Agreement. The UUP fell from its perch, suffering electoral collapse and the loss of all the party’s Westminster MPs by 2010, before temporarily recovering in 2015 only to lose Westminster representation again two years later. The electoral problems of the UUP arose as unionists lost confidence in the Belfast Agreement. The UUP was engulfed by internal chaos and the DUP picked off the talent from its rival, outwitting the UUP politically and offering impressive internal discipline. The DUP claimed to offer the unionist electorate a better arrangement than the deal negotiated by the UUP, a successful electoral pitch. The chapter assesses the UUP’s attempts to shore up its position, via a variety of alliances—with the Conservatives in 2010, via electoral pacts with the DUP in 2015 and a cross-community pitch for nationalist vote transfers in 2017.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the law on pass-on. Pass-on is key to the compensatory objective of antitrust damages. It ensures that claimants along the supply chain are only awarded their losses and not part of the overcharge passed-on in higher charges to their customers. Yet allowing pass-on does not avoid overcompensation and if applied alone would likely ensure that the claimant is under-compensated. This is because pass-on and lost sales are intimately intertwined, at least from an economic perspective. Thus, irrespective of whether pass-on is allowed or disallowed, the claimant suffers an additional loss of profits on the sales not made because its prices are now higher. The Damages Directive allows for a lost profit claim but leaves this to the national laws of the Member States. This is no doubt a policy decision to focus on the prospect of over-compensation rather than the legal principle of full compensation. The European Commission’s Practical Guide and the Pass-on Guidelines on the relationship between pass-on and lost profits due to reduced sales is explicitly recognized.

This chapter assesses how the political development changed the political culture and reduced the importance of friendship. Friendship lost much of its significance in Iceland when the country became part of the Norwegian realm. The new administrative system turned the chieftain's role upside down. Chieftains now got their power from the king, who, in turn, got his power ostensibly from God. This meant that the chieftains no longer needed to build up their power base from below through protection, feasting, and gifts to householders. Now, as the king's officials, the chieftains were to prosecute the householders and possibly punish them, not help them in their conflicts.

This chapter assesses how business schools have responded to periods of economic crisis—or have not. What is striking is how business schools seem to have been remarkably untroubled by any of the economic crises the nation has endured since business schools opened for business. Whether in the 1930s, in the 1970s, or at the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been a collective shrugging of the shoulders inside most business schools. That nonresponse helps one understand that many at business schools and the business leaders with whom they interacted defined “crisis” in a different way. For them, the crisis was one of public relations—how to make business look better when it had lost the confidence of so many Americans—not one of what business had done to lose that trust.

Abstract:
Audiologic testing in the form of pure-tone air-conduction and bone-conduction audiograms provides diagnostic information about the type of hearing loss (conductive, sensorineural, or mixed) and the degree of hearing loss and attendant communication difficulties. The addition of speech tests that use specific types of speech stimuli directly assesses the patient’s ability to hear and to understand speech. Acoustic reflex and reflex decay tests are used to evaluate the integrity of a complicated neural network involving not only the auditory tracts to and through the brain stem but also decussating pathways in the brain stem and the course of CN VII to the innervation of the stapedius muscle. EOAE tests provide an objective measurement of the peripheral hearing system from the external ear through the cochlear outer hair cells. They are useful screening tests for hearing in infants, in patients suspected of auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony, and in patients suspected to have pseudohypacusis, that is, feigned or exaggerated hearing loss.

This chapter discusses further aspects of shareholder remedies, namely the common law multiple derivative claim; derivative claims under Companies Act 2006 (CA 2006), Part 11; the reflective loss principle; personal actions at common law; and specific statutory rights under the CA 2006. At common law, a shareholder aggrieved by a breach of duty by a director could bring a derivative claim on behalf of the company, as an exception to the rule in Foss v Harbottle. That common law claim now remains as a common law multiple derivative claim whereas the ‘ordinary’ derivative claim now is a statutory claim under CA 2006, Part 11. This chapter explores both types of derivative claim and assesses their value to shareholders. An important constraint on shareholder recovery is the principle governing reflective loss which has recently been restated by the Supreme Court. This chapter considers the current position in the light of that development.

A common characteristic of biodiesel, relative to petroleum diesel, is a lowered heating value (or per mass energy content of the fuel). For same-torque engine comparisons, the lower heating value translates into a higher brake specific fuel consumption (amount of fuel consumed per unit of power produced). The efficiency at which fuel energy converts into work energy, however, may remain unchanged. In this experimental study, evaluating nine unique engine operating conditions, brake fuel conversion efficiency (an asse

Abstract To get both the resolution and the field of view needed, 3Di devices are characterized in this paper using phase-contrast X-ray tomography performed in a synchrotron source. The paper shows how the synchrotron-based tomography can be routinely used as a tool for failure analysis, and how some strategies can be applied to make those analyses more time-efficient and automatic without any loss of resolution. It presents and assesses the possibilities offered by a synchrotron radiation facility such as European Synchrotron Radiation Facility for the field of failure analysis in microelect

Abstract Around the 1960s, the proposal of the supercritical dioxide (s-CCO2) power-cycle was first introduced; however, because of various obstacles, the development was slow at that time. With current worldwide emission and power problems, the s-CO2 power cycle has regained more attention because of its unique properties as a working fluid for power-cycle, and zero-emission potential. Each s-CO2 power cycle requires various components for compression, expansion, and heat exchange operation. Among various working fluid, s-CO2 has four significant advantages favorable for developers: 1. Relati

This project conducts research in energy dissipation. It also demonstrates the power of the new Moving Frame Method (MFM) in dynamics to inspire undergraduate students to embark on research in engineering. The MFM is founded on Lie Group Theory to model rotations of objects, Cartan’s moving frames to model the change of a frame in terms of the frame, and a new notation from the discipline of geometrical physics. The MFM presents a consistent notation for single bodies, linked systems and robotics. This work demonstrates that this new method is accessible by undergraduate students. The MFM stru

Diesel fuel carriage in locomotives, while safe in normal operational conditions, presents a potential hazard in the event of serious accident or derailment. Development of an effective mitigation method against this hazard requires an understanding of operational conditions that lead to fuel spill and fire. This paper describes a study of fire hazard stemming from rail accidents and potential approaches to mitigation. Data for the study was obtained from a large sample of National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation reports for accidents involving both freight and passenger locom

The risk of pipeline failure is a measure of the state of knowledge of the pipeline; improved knowledge of the pipeline reduces the uncertainty and therefore can reduce the associated risk. Specifically for corrosion defects, the knowledge of the number and size of defects is often obtained using in-line inspection tools which have uncertainty associated with their measurement capabilities. Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) is a methodology that objectively assesses a range of pipeline integrity threats including the threat of corrosion failure. At Shell Bitumen Plant, Takoradi, Beverley Thermal Fluid Heater (BTFH) generates heat energy to heat thermal fluid (Thermia B) which flows through heat exchanger and then heats bitumen which is to be maintained at temperature range of 140 °C to 160 °C before it is discharged. High rate of heat losses have been observed and in order to maintain the temperature range of bitumen at (140 °C to 160 °C), a lot of heat energy is needed to be generated which means higher fuel consumption for BTFH. Industrial fuel oil is used to fuel the BTFH. This paper assesses the existing insulation system on the p
