Abstract:
✓ The term “papilledema” indicates swelling of the optic discs secondary to increased intracranial pressure. Papilledema can be caused by an intracranial mass lesion or by other factors. Visual symptoms frequently accompany papilledema, which can lead to permanent visual loss if left untreated. Starting with an illustrative case, the authors review the pathophysiology of the visual signs and symptoms of papilledema. They also briefly review potential treatment options, focusing on the role of the neurosurgeon in the treatment of patients with papilledema.

On September 14, 1981 a major slide was discovered in the upstream slope of San Luis Darn, located about 100 miles southeast of San Francisco, California. The slide occurred at the end of a period of rapid drawdown of the reservoir. Although this was the longest and fastest drawdown in the life of the dam, 180 feet in 120 days, there had been seven previous cycles of drawdown, some nearly as severe as the one that preceded the slide. Field measurements showed the slide was caused by the clayey slopewash material left in the foundation of the dam during construction. Although the slopewash wa

Full text
Abstract:
The origins and effects of loss in turbomachines are discussed with the emphasis on trying to understand the physical origins of loss rather than on reviewing the available prediction methods. Loss is defined in terms of entropy increase and the relationship of this to the more familiar loss coefficients is derived and discussed. The sources of entropy are in general: Viscous effects in boundary layers, viscous effects in mixing processes, shock waves and heat transfer across temperature differences. These are first discussed in general and then the results are applied to turbomachinery flows.
