Innocence is central to German memory politics; indeed, one can say that the German memory landscape is saturated with claims of innocence. The Great War is commonly portrayed as a loss of innocence, while the Nazis sought, in their way, to reclaim that innocence by proclaiming Germany as the innocent victim. After World War II, denazification and courts established administrative and legal boundaries within which claims of innocence could be formulated and adjudicated, while the “zero hour” and “economic miracle” established a basis for a different form of reclaiming innocence, one roundly cr

Backyard Bedsides is a series of paintings that explore the loss of innocence associated with childhood abuse and premature sexual discovery. The work focuses on the psychological and emotional repercussions of such events on prepubescent behavior and adolescent development. The images reference composite photographs, scientific studies, statistics, testimonials, and personal experience. The paintings also examine how color, composition, and context can be used to express feelings of isolation, confusion, and conflict. For those who have suffered tremendous personal and financial damage as a result of a wrongful incarceration, the available remedies include the expensive and time-consuming routes of litigation for malicious prosecution, negligent investigation and a Charter breach, or the highly-politicized exercise of mercy by a government to make an ex gratia payment. The title of my dissertation “Ashes of Gold” derives from Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” . The poem is mentioned in “The Outsiders”, and the protagonists, Johnny and Ponyboy, speculate about its meaning. In the middle of such problematic lives, every character deals with his coming of age, and how can you “stay gold” when you are a rebel? My intention is, therefore, to build a bridge between the traditional Hollywood teenage-rebel forefathers in American cinema( “The Wild One”, “Rebel Without a Cause”, “Blackboard Jungle”), and some selected later works which involve group/gang p

The relationship between the mass media and children is historically fraught, characterised by a concern for the potential effects on the leaders of the future. The impact of mass media is undeniable, and vital to a discussion of modern sexualisation of girls, as Huston, Wartella and Donnerstein maintain there are “strong theoretical reasons to believe that media play an especially imp

Abstract:
Poetic creation and encounter with God are two concepts that the Spanish poet Antonio Machado relates to dreams and childhood. He thus recovers the dream as a sphere of contact with God, overcoming in a certain way the faith/reason dialectic that modernity takes pleasure in emphasising. The dream is beyond reason, and there comes the divine inspiration which can then be translated into “a few true words”. Poetic language thus acquires a status far superior to that of delight: it is the key that allows us to touch the mystery. The relationship between dream and childhood also allows Machado to
