Fleming, Michael. "Cosmic Lotus, Rising." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/24555.

Full text
Abstract:
Cosmic Lotus, Rising is a seventeen-minute, multi-movement experimental intercultural work for North Indian tabla and a fourteen-instrument chamber ensemble. This piece integrates playing styles from cosmopolitan classical music of European origin (US tradition), North Indian classical music (Lucknow lineage) and South Indian classical music. In this piece, I focus on the poignant image of the lotus flower, which ascends from the murky depths of desire and attachment to bloom in the light of realization. As one of India’s most recognizable flowers, the lotus is a symbol of creation and spiritual enlightenment. Its long stalk symbolizes the connection with its origins while the flower represents the enlightenment that human beings seek. In each movement, I utilize and integrate taal rhythm cycle structures to inform orchestration, melody, and harmony. This piece explores the concept of a lotus flower emerging, rising, and dancing, as love, growth, and cosmic energy make manifest.

Abstract:
The focus of this work is the relationship between theory and practice in the professional career of the architect Zenon Lotufo (1911-1985) pointing out remarkable facts that determined a personal evolving picture in a certain historical context. A period when the Brazilian modern architecture began to appear and consolidated . Facts as his academic formation in the Engineer-Architect course at the Escola Politécnica de São Paulo (33-36) and the influence of Professor Luis Anhaia Mello give origin to this itinerary. The contacts with Abelardo de Souza and Hélio Duarte (46-48) and with Oscar Niemeyer  in the project of the Ibirapuera Park (51-54) complement his modern repertory. His experience as a professor at the new founded Faculty of Archictecture and Urbanism (48) culminates with the polemic Chair Exam (57). Abstract:
The usefulness of RAPDs (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) to distinguish among different taxa of Lotus was evaluated. The following species were included: L. corniculatus, L. tenuis, L. alpinus, L. japonicus, and L. uliginosus. Several accessions for each species were studied. Following DNA extraction, amplification reactions were performed in a Hybaid DNA Thermal Cycler, and the product visualized according to a standard procedure. Twenty primers were used for each species/accession. Clear bands and several polymorphisms were obtained for all primers. A phenogram was drawn based on the genetic distance among the species. L. alpinus appears as the most distant species from L. corniculatus, followed by L. uliginosus, L. tenuis, and L. japonicus. With the exception of L. alpinus, these findings are in agreement with previous experimental studies in the L. corniculatus group. The use of a greater number of primers and increased number of species may provide a greater resolution of the systematics of these taxa.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bets are analyzed using an intertemporal, state dependent expected utility model with non-linear probability weighting. Gamblers face a tradeoff between long-run expected utility from wealth and the short-run and fading emotional utility from gambling. Different wager tax bets, including lotto, are compared in various settings (fair bet versus monopoly). Reaction patterns are analyzed with respect to tax rates, the price of tickets, jackpots and the 'scale' of the gamble. It is shown that optimal tax rates are higher for larger lotto communities, jackpots induce overshooting 'bubbles' and taxes on lotto and fix-prize gambles are regressive. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
Forage legume species such as Lotus., adapted to the local environmental conditions of South Brazilian States can be an important alternative to increase the supply of high protein content forage to the cattle besides the good adaptability to low-fertility soils. One of the advantages of using forage legumes relays on the acquisition of nitrogen from the symbiosis with diazothrophic bacteria such as Rhizobia. This work aimed the selection of native Rhizobia from soil samples of eight localities of Rio Grande do Sul. It was obtained 259 Rhizobia isolates from plants of Lotus glaber and 68 from Lotus subbiflorus. These isolates were evaluated on the efficiency of symbiotic nitrogen fixation with plants, grown in greenhouse conditions, on colonial morphology, capability of melanin production and genetically characterized by PCR genomic DNA fingerprinting using primers BOX and ERIC. Only five isolates produced melanin. It was selected nine isolates for L. glaber that were more efficient on nitrogen fixation than strains SEMIA 830 and U510, with relative efficiency index ranging from 88 to 132%, and two isolates for L. subbiflorus that were more efficient than strains SEMIA 849 and SEMIA 850, with relative efficiency index of 128 and 159%. Related to the genetic characterization, it was observed that isolates have no identity to the recommended strains, which shows that in the soils of Rio Grande do Sul there are autochthonous Rhizobia capable of efficient symbiotic nitrogen fixation with Lotus glaber and Lotus subbiflorus, which may be recommended to field evaluations and to the production of inoculants to these legume in Brazil.

How many times have you been dreaming as a child that you run and after a few steps your body detaches off the ground and floats into the air? Most of the leisure activities we cultivate today have deep roots into humankind`s history and are still confined to land. The history of hovering has been inspired by the great comic books sci-fi stories and was illustrated through Star Wars flying vehicles, which have been later translated into jetpacks and hovering bikes. What if you would be stuck somewhere in the middle way between dream and reality? What if this vehicle would be at first available to you in a virtual platform, so that you could train to fly it, and when you would master the art or flying it, you could try the real experience?

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis, we study a class of multi-stable reaction-diffusion systems used to model competing species. Systems in this class possess uniform stable steady states representing semi-trivial solutions. We start by considering a bistable, interaction, where the interactions are of classic “Lotka-Volterra” type and we consider a particular problem with relevance to applications in population dynamics: essentially, we study under what conditions the interplay of relative motility (diffusion) and competitive strength can cause waves of invasion to be halted and reversed. By establishing rigorous results concerning related degenerate and near-degenerate systems,we build a picture of the dependence of the wave speed on system parameters. Our results lead us to conjecture that this class of competition model has three “zones of response” in which the wave direction is left-moving, reversible and right-moving, respectively and indeed that in all three zones, the wave speed is an increasing function of the relative motility. Moreover, we study the effects of domain size on planar and non-planar interfaces and show that curvature plays an important role in determining competitive outcomes. Finally, we study a 3-species Lotka-Volterra model, where the third species is treated as a bio-control agent or a bio-buffer and investigate under what conditions the third species can alter the existing competition interaction.

Abstract:
We analyse the preservation of physical properties of numerical approximations tosolutions of the Lotka-Volterra system: its positivity and the conservation of theHamiltonian. We focus on two numerical methods : the symplectic Euler method andan explicit variant of it. We first state under which conditions they are symplectic andwe prove they are both Poisson integrators for the Lotka-Volterra system. Then, westudy under which conditions they stay positive. For the symplectic Euler method,we derive a simple condition under which the numerical approximation always stayspositive. For the explicit variant, there is no such simple condition. Using propertiesof Poisson integrators and backward error analysis, we prove that for initial conditionsin a given set in the positive quadrant, there exists a bound on the step size, such thatnumerical approximations with step sizes smaller than the bound stay positive overexponentially long time intervals. We also show how this bound can be estimated. We illustrate all our results by numerical experiments.

Abstract:
An isoenzyme survey of several taxa within the genus Lotus was undertaken to provide markers for genetic research and to test hypotheses concerning the phylogenetic origin of Lotus corniculatus L. A preliminary study identified seven enzyme systems PGI, TPI, PGM, MDH, IDH, 6-PGDH and ME, that produced consistent clear phenotypes in L. uliginosus Schkuhr. Variation in phenotype with tissue type and stage of development suggested the presence of several isozyme zones in the phenotypes. Enzyme phenotype was constant for shoot tissue of plants older than six weeks. A second study examined recombination and segregation of isoenzyme phenotypes in interspecific hybrids, allo- and autopolyploids, and in L. corniculatus. Duplication and quadruplication of pgi2 loci in hybrids, amphidiploids, and in L. corniculatus was used as evidence that the latter is a segmental allotetraploid. A third study surveyed the occurrence of various isoenzyme alleles in L. alpinus Schleich., L. japonicus (Regel) Larsen, L. tenuis Waldst. & Kit., L. uliginosus and L. corniculatus. Lotus uliginosus had unique distinct alleles for several enzymes that did not occur in the other species. This evidence argues against the involvement of L. uliginosus in the origin of L. corniculatus.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The use of grasslands capable to tolerate high levels of aluminum is a viable alternative to bypass one of the main problems existing in cultivated areas with acid soils. Among the forage legumes, the birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) stands out for its nutritional quality and versatility of adaptation. Given the importance, this work was carried out to select plants of L. corniculatus tolerant to aluminum, and analyze the genetic diversity between these materials with the aid of microsatellite molecular markers. Three genotypes of birdsfoot trefoil were used (Draco, São Gabriel and UFRGS) in nutrient solution containing 200 µmol/L of calcium (CaCl2.2H2O), 100 µmol/L of aluminum (AlCl3) and controlled in a pH range of 4.1 - 4.3. Two selection cycles were made, where the seedlings were selected by the root length. Subsequently, the progress achieved by cycles of selection was tested in an experiment in nutrient solution, similar to that used in the selections, with the original and improved populations, in four concentrations of aluminum (0, 50, 100 and 150 µmol/L) (AlCl3). The initial, final and the growth of the radicle were evaluated. After the end of the second cycle of selection it was carried out the analysis of genetic diversity among genotypes of birdsfoot trefoil studied. Eighteen pairs of primers developed for Lotus japonicus (Regel) Larsen and Trifolium repens L. were used. The genetic similarities based on Jaccard coefficient was used to make the grouping of genotypes by the UPGMA method, using the program NTSYS pc 2.1. The number of alleles and the polymorphism information content (PIC) were calculated for each locus. The selection in nutrient solution was efficient in the selection of seedlings of birdsfoot trefoil tolerant to aluminum. The materials analyzed differ for this characteristic, with the genotype UFRGS F2, being the most tolerant. The microsatellite markers are suitable for accessing the genetic variability among genotypes of L. corniculatus.

Abstract:
In a stochastic Lotka-Volterra model on a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions and subject to occupation restrictions, there exists an extinction threshold for the predator population that separates a stable active two-species coexistence phase from an inactive state wherein only prey survive. When investigating the non-equilibrium relaxation of the predator density in the vicinity of the phase transition point, we observe critical slowing-down and algebraic decay of the predator density at the extinction critical point. The numerically determined critical exponents are in accord with the established values of the directed percolation universality class. Following a sudden predation rate change to its critical value, one finds critical aging for the predator density autocorrelation function that is also governed by universal scaling exponents. This aging scaling signature of the active-to-absorbing state phase transition emerges at significantly earlier times than the stationary critical power laws, and could thus serve as an advanced indicator of the (predator) population's proximity to its extinction threshold. In order to study boundary effects, we split the system into two patches: Upon setting the predation rates at two distinct values, one half of the system resides in an absorbing state where only the prey survives, while the other half attains a stable coexistence state wherein both species remain active. At the domain boundary, we observe a marked enhancement of the predator population density, the minimum value of the correlation length, and the maximum attenuation rate. Boundary effects become less prominent as the system is successively divided into subdomains in a checkerboard pattern, with two different reaction rates assigned to neighboring patches. We furthermore add another predator species into the system with the purpose of studying possible origins of biodiversity. Predators are characterized with individual predation efficiencies and death rates, to which "Darwinian" evolutionary adaptation is introduced. We find that direct competition between predator species and character displacement together play an important role in yielding stable communities. We develop another variant of the lattice predator-prey model to help understand the killer- prey relationship of two different types of E. coli in a biological experiment, wherein the prey colonies disperse all over the plate while the killer cell population resides at the center, and a "kill zone" of prey forms immediately surrounding the killer, beyond which the prey population gradually increases outward.

Abstract:
Legumes assimilate N2 through the establishment of Root Nodule Symbiosis (RNS) with bacteria from the genus Rhizobia. Small RNAs are 18-25nt molecules that regulate gene expression in a sequence-specific manner via a mechanism known as ‘RNA silencing’. Among the different types of smRNAs, microRNAs (miRNAs) are post-transcriptional gene regulators that, in plants, play key regulatory roles in plant-microbe interactions. In this context, we chose the model legume Lotus japonicus to assess the contribution of microRNAs to RNS. First, we identified the main RNA silencing effectors in Lotus japonicus, with emphasis on miRNA-related pathways, and generated L. Japonicus transgenic lines expressing the tombusviral silencing suppressor P19, which interferes with miRNA action. We then embarked on a smRNA cloning/sequencing strategy. The pooled sequenced data served as basis for the identification of miRNA genes in Lotus japonicus: 16 conserved and 27 potentially novel miRNA families. Comparative analysis of cloned smRNAs from root and nodules revealed that a discrete number of conserved miRNAs, miR167, miR172, miR390 and miR397, are highly expressed in mature nodules, as opposed to roots. Genetic analysis showed that the accumulation of miR167 and miR172 is Rhizobium-independent, as opposed to miR397. Further genetic studies showed that miR397 induction is also reproduced at the systemic level but dependent on the establishment of a successful N2 fixation, rather than on the infection by Rhizobium per se. Thus, our findings confirm that miRNA are important gene regulators at different stages of the establishment of Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:
Post-anthesis colour change (PACC) is widely thought to be an adaptation to signal floral viability to pollinators, and may be a developmental pre-pattern for bird pollination in Lotus. Lotus filicaulis and Lotus sessilifolius are insect-pollinated herbaceous legumes with flowers that open yellow, shift to orange and finally, red. This thesis examines the ecological and molecular basis for floral colour change in these Lotus species. L. filicaulis was cultivated in a glasshouse from which pollinating insects (bees) were excluded, and the rate of colour change was recorded in both unpollinated and manually pollinated flowers. Unpollinated flowers from both the yellow stage and red stage were sampled for sequencing. The transcriptomes of L. filicaulis and L. sessilifolius of both colour stages were analyzed for differentially expressed genes and enriched ontologies. Pollination significantly accelerates PACC in L. filicaulis, consistent with the hypothesis that PACC increases pollination efficiency by directing pollinators to unpollinated flowers. RNA-seq results show the synchronized upregulation of the entire cyanidin biosynthesis pathway in the red stage of PACC of both Lotus species – possibly at the expense of adjacent pathways competing for the same substrate. This thesis is the foundation for understanding the molecular evolution of PACC in Lotus and will be useful in testing the hypothesis that PACC is a preadaptation to bird pollination in Lotus.

The Lotka-Volterra equations, frequently referred to as predator-prey equations, are a set of non-linear differential equations constructed to describe the interaction dynamics between different species in nature. Yet, since their publication many authors have proved that the applications of these equations go way beyond mathematical biology. The present work focuses on their application to the banking system and to economics. Regarding the banking system, we study three dynamical systems that may describe the relationship between deposit and loan growth in a bank's balance sheet. In addition, we look at the resemblance between a three level ecological food chain and a three level banking system, and study its stability. As for the applications to economics, we study the famous Goodwin's model for the cyclic behavior of wages and employment. To finish our work we present a pair of predator-prey equations that model the dynamical relationship between consumption and capital goods, finding that economic cycles are endogenous, self-sustained and non-linear.

Abstract:
Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L. cv. Leo), is a perennial forage legume that has difficulty in establishing stands due to slow seedling growth, weed competition and herbicide sensitivity. The development of herbicide resistant cultivars would be of economic importance. Resistant lines were isolated after sequential selection at the callus, shoot and whole plant levels to the sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides Harmony (DPX-M6316, code name for methyl 3- ( ( ((4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5,triazine-2-yl)amino) carbonyl) amino) sulfonyl-2-thiophenecarboxylate), or Classic (DPX-F6025, code name for 2(( (4-chloro-6-methoxypyrimidine-yl)amino carbonyl) aminosulfonyl)benzoic acid ethyl ester. In field and growth chamber tests the Harmony regenerant lines displayed an increased tolerance as compared to control plants from tissue culture, and from seed. Results of the evaluation of callus cultures of regenerated mutant lines signify stability of the resistance. Outcrossed seeds collected from field trials, and tested in vitro for herbicide resistance, indicate that the trait is heritable and that resistance may be due to reduced sensitivity of acetolactate synthase to SU inhibition. It is concluded that herbicide resistant birdsfoot trefoil cultivars can be isolated using in vitro selection.

Abstract: Small farms which produce corn for their own usage, mainly for animal feeding, have problem to preserve the produce due to the lack of efficient and low cost technics. Small farmers generally use empirical methods to extend corn storage-life and to keep it s quality. In th is work it was evaluated the effect of eucalyptus leaves CEucaliptus citriodora) as a preservative for unhusked corn ear in order to improve storage technic for small farmers and to reduce quantitative losses. The results showed that utilization of eucalyptus leaves and fumigation technics are equivalent but the former brings about economical and operational advantages over fumigation. In addition, it was observed that a conjugated treatment fumigation plus eucalyptus leaves) had best preserved the stored produce quality as well as improved fumigation. However, it seems that the husk is a very important factor in preserving unhusked corn ear quality

Abstract:
Traditionally recognized as the first of the great Buddhist treasure revealers, Nyang-rel Nyima Özer (1124-1192) historiographically reconstructed the Imperium into a golden age of Tibetan Buddhism. An analysis of his two early biographies demonstrates that he was among the first to recall an unbroken series of preincarnations in real historical time, which was a crucial link that led to the ascension of concatenated reincarnates like the Karmapas and Dalai Lamas. For Nyang-rel, his past life as emperor Tri Song-détsen (d. 800) provided the teleological karmic basis for his life as a finder of the old texts and relics deemed "treasure." According to his biographies and the two narratives that are attributed to him, Nyang-rel’s treasures were uniformly material objects extracted via quite mundane methods, though the discovery of old manuscripts seems to have been only an initial step in a process of compilation, redaction and composition that resulted in their reintroduction. Allegedly among these treasures was the first complete biography of the eighth-century Tantrika, Padmasambhava, which later became renowned as The Copper Palace. Much of this narrative was incorporated into the history of Buddhism entitled Flower Nectar: The Essence of Honey that is also attributed to Nyang-rel. Based on a comparative analysis of available recensions, however, I propose three hypotheses as equally viable alternatives to what has been asserted concerning the composition of these two texts. First, Nyang-rel did not consider his biography of Padmasambhava to be a treasure, but the tradition later manufactured a recovery narrative and accompanying title that promoted it as such. Second, Nyang-rel did not compile the Flower Nectar history. Third, based on oral, textual and mnemonic fragments, Nyang-rel produced a narrative of Tri Song-détsen and Padmasambhava that others developed into The Copper Palace and Flower Nectar. In sum, Nyang-rel was a progenitor of some of the most definitive aspects of Tibetan Buddhism, yet these very innovations ensured that he would be eclipsed by later adepts who, in adopting his claims and methods, revealed new iterations of his scriptures and narratives. He thus remains one of the most influential yet unsung figures of the Tibetan renaissance.

Gustin, Melissa L. "Eating the lotus : new critical approaches to neoclassical sculpture." Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20534/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation uses object-based case studies to explore how works by Emma Stebbins and Harriet Hosmer—and by extension, the broader field of American neoclassical sculptors—were influenced by the complex visual and historical field of Rome, 1852–1878. This project models different ways of reading and responding to sculptures which are complex works of classical translation, reference, and response, through an object-first and experience-based approach. I discuss four sculptures in three case studies: Hosmer’s Daphne and Medusa (1853, 1853/4), Stebbins’s The Lotus-Eater (1857/60), and Hosmer’s Pompeian Sentinel (1876/8). These case studies have been chosen for their rich, multivalent relationships to previous artistic models, texts, and visual spaces in Rome (both the modern city and the ancient empire). I bring together methodological and critical approaches that have not been previously used for American neoclassical scholarship, especially Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s definition of ‘camp’ and weak theory. I utilize literary models of classical reception, allusion, and intertext, theories of objects in relation to time and to other objects, ecological models, and archaeological theories. My object-first approach draws heavily on first-hand observation of sites in Rome and its surrounding areas, especially Pompeii. Within this thesis, I emphasize this first-hand experience along with the importance of travel to these sites as part of my research method through the strategic use of the first person and an emphasis on the intellectual, emotional responses to sites that I had. This reinforces my dissertation’s aim of enlivening the scholarly discourse around neoclassical scholarship as well as engaging in academic honesty, rather than upholding a dispassionate empiricism that does not reflect the methodological and critical approach of this project. These will be theoretically rich, chronologically complex, and emotionally engaged readings of these works, that embrace the multivalent, anachronic potentials of neoclassical sculpture.
