Abstract:
This research study investigates Lotus FM, as one of many South African Media components that are catering for one specific cultural or religious group. The investigation explores the implications of practice of a pecific media component that caters for specific cultural or religious groups operating in a post-apartheid South Africa. After the end of the apartheid era in South Africa, a number of South African media components have proclaimed their commitment to reconciliation and nation building within South Africa by attempting to unite audiences. The South African Broadcasting Corporation, which held the monopoly on South African Broadcasting for decades, has promulgated the notion of the rainbow nation to audiences in South Africa. Since 1994, sub-components of the different South African media segments were developed to cater for specific ethnic or cultural groups by the station managements. This was aimed at reversing the effects of pre-1994 media that catered for the former ruling minority only or ethnic groups that were categorized by the former political dispensation. It is possible, however, that this has resulted in a renewed and continued separation of interest groups present in South Africa today.

Ndawana, Tariro. "'The whole nation on one station'? National FM as a case study of radio for indigenous small linguistic communities in Zimbabwe." Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30346.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an institutional ethnography of National FM as the only PSB radio that broadcasts in all local languages. It examines the feasibility of having one radio station broadcasting in all the indigenous languages of Zimbabwe. Language rights are pivotal in human development and many countries have developed many ways that can be used to promote them. The media have also been used in preservation of language rights (AMARC, 2014). However, many minorities are deprived of their language rights. Previous research in Zimbabwe on small indigenous communities, have looked at general rights and the right to education. Available literature on radio has also studied content and concentrated on Radio Zimbabwe. This thesis explores both the promotion of language rights and the involvement of radio in the preservation of minority languages. It delves into the forces behind the production of local minority languages at National FM. The institutional ethnography encompassed the use of observation, in-depth interviews with sixteen participants and document analysis. It also used content analysis of all programmes that are Barwe, Chikunda, Doma and Hwesa which have the smallest number of speakers in the country (Hachipola, 1998; Magwa, 2008; Ndlovu, 2009). This study proves that National FM is not fully representing all the minority languages. The political economy of the station and sociology of journalism directly affect the production. National FM, like all PSB radio stations in the country has gone commercial. Management is now focusing on generating revenue than promoting language rights. National FM broadcasts in Shona and Ndebele instead of the minority languages. ZBC management consists of Shona and Ndebele speakers and decision making is done by people who are not minority language speakers. Content analysis of the four selected languages indicates that the languages which have been dominated are still marginalized as National FM broadcasts current affairs programmes only for the selected languages. These languages are given very little broadcast time and the programmes are not interactive.

The aim of this study was to analyze the appropriation of the Alternativa FM Communitarian Radio by the women involved in the actions of the non-governmental organization Nazaré da Mata Women Association – Amunam. What was specifically wanted was to understand the point until which the work in the production of a communitarian radio contributes for the development of the human and social capitals of these women. Searching the communitarian radios as initiatives that are related to the local development constituted a possibility to think of the communication produced by the popular contexts and directed toward them. In the specific case of a work that evaluated the production of a communitarian radio by agricultural women, the condition to think of the construction of human and social capitals in these women came from this radio practice. The theoretical support for Communitarian Radio was based on authors as Cicília Perruzzo, Lílian Bahia and Dioclécio Luz. The question of Gender was brought by Joan Scott, Norma Sanchís, and Alma Espino; the Social Capital by Carlos Julio Jara, Robert Putnam and Heloiza Matos; and the perspective of communication directed to the local development was emphasized by the authoress Maria Salett Tauk Santos. It is a study of case that used combined techniques of data collection, such as: bibliographical research, documentary analysis and half-structuralized interview with the Amunam coordinators, the Alternativa FM directors, coordinators and female broadcasters of this radio station. During the work, it was observed that the Amunam, through the Alternativa FM Radio Station, develops a project directed to the local development using endogenous energies towards the attempt of accomplishing improvements in Nazaré da Mata, which are related to the human capital construction, when they make the formation and development of the female broadcasters‟ technical abilities possible, and the social capital‟s, as the work in the radio station stimulates contribution and political participation of these women who are involved in the radio practice, although it is perceived that the human and social capitals are still being formed and are part of a process that is not suddenly established.

Kaihar, Sunita. "Multifaceted broadcasting : an analysis into Lotus FM's role and identity as a "national public service-cum-commercial broadcaster with community responsibility"." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/5323.

Abstract:
Radio broadcasting is usually classified as either a public broadcasting service or as being commercially driven. In the South African context, the concept of community radio has further complicated the definition of a public broadcasting service. While profit motivation and niche marketing characterize a radio driven by commercial means, community radio is predominantly non-profit oriented, directed towards a particular community. A public broadcasting service is, amongst other elements, typified as being geographically accessible to all and of paying particular attention to minority groups. Lotus FM, a radio station that came into existence on 16 January 1983, for the South African Indian community, describes itself as a "national public service-cum-commercial broadcaster with community responsibility". The South African Indian community, a minority group within the broader South African population, comprises of five language groups (Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil and Telegu) and three religious groupings (Hinduism, Islam and Christianity). This research aims to explore the feasibility with which Lotus FM is accommodating the conflicting interests of being a melange of all three forms of broadcasting and reflecting it via its programmes.

Due to the model of radiowave propagation is estimated under the conditions of geographical and climatic environments abroad, the accuracy of result needs to be proved by practical measurement when this model is used in Taiwan. herefore, the measurement information in this study is practically collected from 93 points around the regions in Kaohsiung by using the signals from Radio Station transmissions of FM, 98.3MHz 、FM101.7MHZ and FM104.9 MHZ。 Through the CHIRplus-BC software in Germany L&S company, this study uses the propagation models of ITUR-370 、ITUR-1546 、Okumura-Hata 、L&S VHF/UHF 、Epstein-Peterson and Longley/Rice to predict the field strength value measured from 93 points. Furthermore, by using the errors between the values of prediction and reality measurement, the accuracy of propagation models prediction under the different conditional regions, different frequency and different distance will be also analyzed in this study to estimate the field strength of FM radio station in Kaohsiung area,Through the simulation results show the ITU-R 370 model is the most estimate to the field strength of FM radio station in Kaohsiung area

Abstract:
Today. the pandemic of HIV/AIDS has become a serious challenge especially in developing and underdeveloped nations. For this reason, all nations, different health institutions and nongovernmental organizations are investing their wealth to increase public awareness on the seriousness of this pandemic disease. Media institutions also play an unparalleled role in controlling HIV/AIDS through educating the society. HIV/AIDS is a great threat both to South Africa and Eritrea as they are part of the Sahale Sahara of Africa. That area is highly affected and infected by the pandemic. It is certain that media have been used to disseminate information in the society about HIV/AIDS in both countries. This study attempts to identify the nature of communication strategies that are employed against HIV/AIDS by Radio Ukhozi FM in South Africa and Radio Dimitsi-Hafash Programme Tigringa in Eritrea. The study attempts to identify the communication formats that both radio stations utilize to increase public awareness about HIV/AIDS. It also examines whether both stations are using Entertainment-Educational communication strategies to disseminate HIV/AIDS messages. Furthermore, the study assesses target audience participation; both stations assessment of their programme and scheduling of HIV/AIDS awareness messages. Finally, it attempts to single out the challenges that both stations encounter in designing messages for combating HIV/AIDS in their respective communities.

As the digitalization of broadcast being an inevitable trend in age of digital convergence, Taiwan had introduced DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) system, but it failed owing to overall environment factors. For these years, with the consecutive changes in media environment, there has been progress in technology of information, communication and communication convergence resulting in gradually getting out of the shadow that failed to promote DAB in Taiwan. How will the broadcasting digitization be innovated, spread and how the communication technology used by and satisfied the audience, whether the broadcast APP (Application) may achieve the both conditions are the research directions in this study. The thesis adopts participant observation and focus group interview as the research method by inviting radio broadcasting practitioners, related professionals from industry, and the most important, radio audience, to discuss this new radio broadcasting technology and its future developmental potential. The research results indicate the broadcast APP is an option for audience after the digitalization of broadcast, which attract the attention of audience. The excellence of the program contents, however, is still crucial no matter how the technology evolve. In terms of the possibility of future development of broadcast APP, the discussion of this research provides viewpoints and suggestions from radio broadcasting practitioners and audience regarding this technology, and we hope it can bring relevant information for the broadcast media as reference.

Dalene, Maria Bjerke. "Community radio and participation : the case of Siyaya FM." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/2343.

Full text
Abstract:
Community radio and participation - the case ofSiyaya FM illustrates that radio is a powerful tool when it comes to communication and empowerment for active listeners. However, it also shows that community members are not empowered to the same extent if they are not engaged. Participation is essential for development and empowerment as described by, among others, Chambers (1983). At the same time the thesis demonstrates that it is difficult to involve all parts of a community because of power structures and therefore the radio station might end up empowering people already in power. Siyaya FM has, however, a role to play in Cato Manor with its high unemployment rate by training people the tool of radio and also educating listeners and informing them of important issues that can improve their knowledge. In addition, the radio station can take part in building social cohesion among the different groups of community members. By strengthening community radio stations the national authorities have a potential to meet the goals of their development strategies, while at the same time fulfilling the constitutional promise of freedom of speech for all by creating access to the airwaves for everybody. However, funding shortages create obstacles for many South African community radio stations to fulfil their task as community developers.

Abstract:
This study will examine the role sport plays in a new democratic South Africa between the periods 1994-2002. Its objective is to look at how sport can be used, through the medium of radio, as a unifying activity in the diversified South African society. The study will specifically compare the broadcast of soccer and rugby on the two radio stations (Ukhozi FM and Umhlobo Wenene FM). The main aim is to explain the relevance of the inclusion of sport into the programmes of the two radio stations mentioned above, in the period 1994-2002. This comparative approach will also explain the extent to which the listeners of these stations understand the sporting codes mentioned (soccer and rugby) now compared to how they did before 1994. This study was undertaken because there is little of its kind (if any) that looks at the power of sport broadcasting on radio in changing people's mindsets, attitudes and misconceptions regarding soccer and rugby in a new South African context. There is also little literature available that looks specifically at how Ukhozi FM and Umhlobo FM listeners relate to the broadcast of these popular but diverse codes after the end of apartheid regime. The conclusions drawn up in this study show that radio is still powerful in changing people's behaviour and attitudes not only about different sporting codes aired on radio but also in the effort to promote unity among South Africans regardless of cultural, ethnic racial and genderdifferences. In this regard, radio does cross divides created by issues of colour, culture, gender, age and racial differences.

The propagation model ITU-R 370 is a popular method of radio field strength estimation in the area of North America and Europe. Because the terrain and climate in Taiwan are different from those in North America and Europe, the performance of ITU-R 370 model is degraded in estimating the field strength of the FM radiobroadcast station in Taiwan area. The drawback will influence the reuse of the frequency, and therefore waste the resource of radio spectrum. Based on the measured data, Back Propagation Neural Network model is used to construct an estimation model for the field strength estimation of FM radio station in Kaohsiung area. Through the training process, simulation results show that the Back Propagation Neural Network model improves the performance of ITU-R 370 model. Therefore, the proposed model can be an effective auxiliary tool for the ITU-R 370 model to estimate the field strength of FM radio station in Kaohsiung area. The more accurate the field strength estimation, the more solid the arrangement of frequency reuse.

Very few scholars have ventured into language use in media discourse, especially in African Languages. The purpose of this study was to determine the language use in media discourse in the Nḓevhetsini Programme on Phalaphala FM, to investigate linguistic elements that create challenges amongst presenters, reporters, listeners and guest speakers and also the manner in which the message is received by listeners. This study employed a qualitative approach to obtain data from Nḓevhetsini episodes. The episodes were divided into themes identified in order to compare common cases and those that differ in language use amongst presenters, reporters, compilers, listeners and guest speakers engaged on the Nḓevhetsini episodes. The study found that borrowing, code-mixing, dialectal variants use, and not interpreting the English message to listeners bring challenges in language use in media discourse. Language programmes that promote language should be implemented. Rules that guide language use are important in language preservation.

This study investigates the role of radio in South African education, with Phalaphala FM as a case study. The aim was to investigate the extent to which Phalaphala FM's programmes include educational material and the extent to which the respondents listen to Phalaphala FM to satisfy their educational needs. Phalaphala FM as a regional radio station predominantly serves rural listeners, as they often do not have access to alternative forms of media. The theoretical point of departure is the uses and gratifications with its emphasis on the active audience concept. Content analysis of Phalaphala FM' s programme schedule was conducted to determine the amount of educational material. Focus group interviews and survey research were used to determine the respondents' media usage patterns. The results indicate that entertainment programmes are given more time on Phalaphala FM and that the respondents prefer entertainment programmes, to informational and educational programmes.

As the local radio broadcast industry underwent a drastic revamp since 1993 following a series of ratio frequency deregulations by the government opening up opportunities to file for broadcast licensing, privately run radio broadcast stations have begun to thrive and eventually become mainstream in the broadcast business. As a majority of the emerging radio broadcast stations are of medium to small frequency powered radio stations, and as restricted by radio wave frequency projection, the service coverage tends to be limited to within a radius of 5 to 20 kilometers of a moderate range, yet with a relatively moderate scale of equipment investment and operating capital. At which, the number of legally registered radio stations has mushroomed in the past decade, presently there are a total of nearly 160 radio broadcast stations that are legally registered to compete the piece of the action and share the broadcast advertising pie. With a limited market scale, the radio broadcast industry finds itself enthralled in an unavoidable heated market competition as new operators rush to joint the marketplace in multiple numbers. As a result, it is not surprising that radio station operators would need to ponder how best to secure a nice market through business management thinking of audience segregation, professionalism and strategic pact. Managing an audience-specific market has benefited from diverse listening choices available to the mass audience, which in turn allow the broadcast industry to take to a diversified development feature to harbor content enrichment. Yet, notwithstanding the emerging force does contribute towards breaking down the once monopolistic industry dominated by a few powerful stations, coupled with certain loopholes in government regulations, the developing trend, nevertheless, has posed certain impact to the structure and landscape of the radio broadcast industry, and ramifications derived from the development only further accelerates business operating difficulties that test the wits of the radio broadcasters. The study aims to examine how the conventional radio broadcast stations confront a drastically fast-changing marketplace, and how they evolve in operating philosophy and mentality, and move to revamp their management and adjust their strategies, and some of the more drastic moves that they have sought in transforming from a mass broadcast market to an audience-specific market. A station that has successfully transformed itself into one positioned as a finance, economic and money-management oriented one has been taken as an example to further profile and examine the process through in-depth interviews and hands-on participation and field observations broaching from the practical viewpoint. One other objective has been to propose the author’s humble input and to contribute some of the study findings deriving from such type of station managing knowledge accumulated on some of the crucial focuses required for a radio broadcast station once focusing on mass audiences to transform itself into an audience-specific broadcasting establishment.

Hart, Thomas Bongani. "Community radio : the beat that develops the soul of the people? : a case study of XK fm as a SABC owned community radio station and its role as a facilitator of community based development." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/6346.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is concerned with the potential of a community radio station under the ownership of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in being a facilitator and social actor of community-based development. XK fm is a radio station run by members of the !Xun and Khwe (two ethnic San communities), but owned and governed by the SABC. It was established to preserve and protect the cultures, languages and histories of the two communities as well acting as a facilitating and promoter of development. The focus of this research is on the examination of the station‘s day-to-day development programmes, the processes involved in operation, production and transmission of these programmes and the outcomes of these processes in the reception of the programmes among the two communities. As a means of critically analyzing the multi-layered aspects of operations within the radio station and the listening habits of its audiences as a whole, this study is situated within a Circuit of Culture (du Gay et al, 1997) framework of theory. It is also based on a case study approach of methodology that utilizes ethnographic methods of data collection from semi-structured and in-depths interviews to passive and participant observations that have been recorded on video. Based on the principles of both forms of development radio broadcasting, this study concludes that XK fm has been successful in utilizing indigenous knowledge and culture to produce radio programming that is sensitive to the development needs of the !Xun and Khwe communities. It has created awareness of development issues through both its cultural programmes and it informational programmes, and through the SABC has been enabled to be productively sustainable, technically advanced and participatory in nature. However, the SABC‘s control over the station does limit the two communities‘ ownership of the station and participation in policy construction, thus constraining the station in more effectively acting as a community radio station. It suggests that XK fm cannot act alone as the sole facilitator of development and needs other mechanisms to enhance participation and effective dialectical information exchange such as radio listening clubs.
