The studies on book culture and the functioning of various libraries have been present in academic circle for many decades. For obvious reasons the interest in books among the illustrious members of Radziwiłł magnate family as well as their scope of activity as the patrons of culture have been analyzed by historians. In the context, the history of the famous Radziwiłł library in Nesvizh can be considered as a separate research topic. This magnificent collection was confiscated after the first partition of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1772) by order of Empress Catherine the Great. Some 15.000 volumes were transported to Saint Petersburg and offered to the Russian Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts (later Russian Academy of Sciences).Nicolas Radziwiłł the Black (1515–1565) is considered to be the founder of the Nesvizh library; however, its full development can be dated back to the time of Nicholas Christopher Radziwiłł “the Orphan” (1549–1616), who rebuilt the ducal palace and organized a library in one of the specially adopted rooms. The Nesvizh collection has been enriched by numerous donations, including that of cardinal and bishop of Vilnius George Radziwiłł (1556–1600), Sigismund Charles Radziwiłł (1591–1642), and many other members ofthe family.The presented catalogue was compiled under the request of Duke Alexander Louis Radziwiłł. This magnate, born in 1594 as a son of Nicolas Christopher Radziwiłł and Elisabeth Eufemia née Wiśniowiecka, received a most privileged education. In 1610 he began his studies in Germany then traveled throughout Germany, France and Italy. He returned to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by the end of 1620, but in 1624 he left for Italy again, this time in the company of Prince Vladislas Vasa. In summer 1625 he again returned to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but soon was totally immersed in political life. Thanks to family connections he advanced his career very fast, becoming in the court marshal of Lithuania in 1635, and grand marshal of Lithuania only two years later. In December 1652 he went to Italy again and died in Bologna March 30, 1654. The manuscript catalogue of the library of Alexander Louis Radziwiłł is currently preserved in the Kórnicka Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Ms BK 1320). It contains of two parts. The first of them (f. 1–25r), compiled according to subjects, was written down in April 1651, then second one (f. 26r–46v), compiled alphabetically – in May and June this year. The catalogues are not identical. The first part, divided into classes, is more comprehensive than the second one (alphabetical). The catalogue was composed by John Hanowicz, mayor of Nesvezh. The manuscript has been marked with the ex-libris of the Radziwiłł library (Ex Bibliotheca Radivilliana Ducali Nesvisiensi) and pressmark (Loc. X, No 17). Hanowicz did not state usually the information about the place and year of publication, which makes the precise identification of the books very difficult. Therefore, one can only predict the exact number of the books (and volumes) preserved in the Nesvezh library at that time. It also happened that Hanowicz stated a title of this same book in both versions: once in the original Latin version and then in (abbreviated) Polish form. Among items included the catalogue one can also find manuscripts, maps, drawings and landed estate documents. Most the books were bound with white or red leather, less frequently with green, cherish, orange or red colored leather, and seldom with morocco leather or paper. The bibliographical descriptions provided in the footnotes should be considered only as suggestions, for only direct analysis of a given book (in visu) allows one to identify and link a book with the Radziwiłł Library. Some of the most precious books were kept in the castle treasury. The Nesvizh collections included also musical pieces, e.g. the libretto (?) of the first opera – Il ratto di Helena – performed on September 4th, 1636, in the theater of the lower ducal castle in Vilnius. The music of the famous opera was composed by an anonymous author, but the libretto was produced by Virgilio Puccitelli.The significance of the magnate families (e.g. that of the Radziwiłłs or the Sapiehas) as promoters and patrons of fine arts and literature was enormous and hard to over-estimate in the history of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A further and detailed study on the content of the Nesvizh library of Duke Alexander Louis Radziwiłł in 1651 gives one the opportunity to present in full and broad contexts a truly European library collection of Baroque culture in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

AbstractThe closeness of a work from Rubens' studio in the English Royal Collection, known as Equestrian Portrait of a Knight of the Golden Fleece (Fig. I, Note 1), to two equestrian portraits painted by Van Dyck during his stay in Genoa, from 1621 to 1626 (Figs. 2, 3, Note 2) has led to the identification of the sitter. A number of other pictures from the circle of Rubens and Van Dyck show horses and/or riders in related poses and the dates on some of them reveal them to have been painted before Van Dyck's portraits. This applies to The Riding School by or after Rubens, which is generally dated 1610-12 (Fig. 4, Note 3), a Paradise Landscape by Jan Brueghel of 1613 (Note 4) and Sight dated 1617 by the same artist (Fig.5, Note 5), which features a horseman known as Archduke Albert. A number of undated paintings inspired by the same model include six supposed to be of Archduke Albert (Notes 6, 10), three by Casper de Crayer (Fig. 6, Note 13) and eguestrian portraits of Louis XIII (Note 14) and Ladislaw IV of Poland. Thus it seems likely that these followers of Rubens', Van Dyck included, based themselves on one and the same equestrian portrait by their teacher. Since Van Dyck almost certainly painted the two equestrian portraits in Genoa during his stay in that city, his model or a replica of it must also have been there between 1621 and 1626. In fact, probably at the request of his patrons (Note 17), he often used models by Rubens, who had worked in Genoa for a time in 1606 (Note 16). However, his two equestrian portraits are not based on the only Genoese one by Rubens now known, that of the Marchese Doria (Fig. 7, Note 18), which is very different and has a liveliness quite, unlike Van Dyck's quiet static compositions. The equestrian portrait in the English Royal Collection was bought by George I in 1723 as a Rubens. The sitter is clad in the Spanish costume of the early 17 th century while the towers in the background could be those of Antwerp (Note 36). The sitter has been identified as the Archduke Albert, but he actually bears no resemblance to other portraits of the Archduke, who was also much older than this at the time of Ruberas' stay in Genoa in 1606. The most likely candidate is Ambrogio Spinola (Note 32) , the statesman and general, of whom both Rubens and Van Dyck painted more than one portrait. Spinola was commander of the Spanish troups in the Southern Netherlands, a friend of Rubens and Knight of the Golden Fleece, and he also came from Genoa, where this portrait could have been painted during a visit he made to the city in 1606 (Notes 33, 34). Stylistically too the portrait seems to fit in with the series of portraits painted by Rubens in Genoa in that year. The physiognomy of the sitter is certainly close to that of the known portraits of Spinola (Figs. 8-1, Note 35), while the details of Spinola's life also support the identification. Spinola (1569-1630), who was Marquis of Sesto and Venafro, belonged to one of the group of closely related, families of bankers who held key positions in Genoa. He arrived in the Netherlands around 1602 at the head of a large and unusually well-trained body of troops. In 1603 he provided funds to prevent a mutiny among the Spanish troups and after his capture of Ostend in 1604 he was appointed second in command to Archduke Albert. He was made a Knight of the Golden Fleece on I March 1605 and in the same year he was put in charge of military finances. From 1606 until his departure for Spain in 1628 he was superintendent of the military treasury and' mayordomo mayor' to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. After the death of Albert in 1621 he became principal adviser to Isabella and thus the most powerful man in the Spanish Netherlands. His amiable character brought him many friends, even among the ranks of the enemy, notably the Princes Maurice and Frederick Henry, with whom he had a great deal of contact during the Twelve Years Truce. It was probably one of them who bought the Portrait of Spinola by Van Miereveld (Fig. 8). After a disappointing mission to Spain in 1628, Spinola was relieved of his command of the Army of Flanders and put in charge of the Spanish troups in Lombardy. He died in his castle in Piedmont in 1630. During the years 1603-5 and later Spinola made several visits to Madrid, where he will undoubtedly have met the powerful Duke of Lerma and probably also seen the equestrian portrait that Rubens painted of him in 1603 (Fig. 12, Note 39). He must also have known of the portraits Rubens painted in Genoa in 1606, since at least three and probably five of them are of members of the Spinola family, while there survives a letter to Rubens from Paolo Agostino Spinola on the subject of portraits (Note 40). All this makes it likely that Spinola would have had his own Portrait painted too and that Rubens may well have painted his first portrait of the man who was to become his lifelong friend as early as 1606. Although Rubens was sometimes irritated by Spinola's lack of interest in his work (Note 41) , he admired him greatly (Note 42). He cultivated Spinola's friendship after his return to Antwerp in 1608 and will doubtless have introduced Van Dyck to him. Van Dyck later painted more than twenty pictures for the five Spinola palaces (Note 43) in Genoa and his work also became known in Madrid via Spinola and his son-in-law Don Diego Felipez Messia Guzman de Legañes, who owned many works by Van Dyck (Note 44). The presumed equestrian portrait of Spinola was much copied, as were other portraits of him by Rubens. Spinola was admired all over Europe and that may have been why other commanders and princes wanted to have themselves portrayed in the same way. The original or a replica may have hung in Spirtola's palace in Brussels, where the first to have seen it would have been Archduke Albert, which may explain the many equestrian portraits of him by Rubens' followeers which were based on it. Another possibility is that Rubens himself may have painted an equestrian portrait of the Archduke very similar to that of Spinola around 1610, but that this is no longer known. Caspar de Crayer of Brussels, a friend, though not a pupil of Rubens, was also influenced by the Spinola equestrian portrait. Furthermore, when he was invited to paint a set of equestrian portraits for the Huis ten Bosch, he sent the young Antwerp painter Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert to The Hague in his place (Note 46) and it was in this way that Rubens' model came to the Northern Netherlands, where it was copied only once, by Isaac Isacsz. in his equestrian portrait of William the Silent (Note 47). The equestrian portrait of Sigmund III of Poland (Fig. 13), a cousin of Archduke Albert, could also have been painted in Van Dyck's studio in Genoa, which was probably visited by his son Prince Ladislaw in 1624 (Note 48). This picture too still owes much to Rubens' model which Van Dyck used again ten years later for his equestrian portraits of Charles I of England (Fig. 14, Note, 50) and Francisco de Moncada (Note 51).

Alors qu’on associe le souvenir des guerres de Religion dans la fiction française au genre des nouvelles historiques et galantes des années 1660, cet article montre comment le roman (sentimental, chevaleresque et d’aventures) du début du xviie siècle a été un premier lieu de mémoire de ces guerres civiles. Les diverses modalités de fictionnalisation de l’histoire ainsi que le traitement romanesque de la violence sont exposés, dans le souci de dégager la spécificité de l’approche romanesque de la guerre civile. Finalement, c’est le travail de mémoire singulier de chaque sous-genre romanesque que met en lumière cette recherche : souvenir partageable, mémoire militante des troubles ou lecture critique du passé pour mieux agir au présent. Les romans écrits entre 1599 et 1629 proposent ainsi une palette intéressante de romans « historiques », bien avant que ce genre de fiction n’apparaisse sous le règne de Louis xiv.

Recent scholarship has located John Fletcher's The Island Princess (1621) in the historical context of the early modern “spice race” but has not addressed the extent to which the intra‐European tensions staged in the play also enact an international contest for symbolic and cultural resources. Taking as its starting point Fletcher's acknowledged sources, Bartolomé Leonardo de Argensola's Conquista de las islas Malucas (1609) and Louis Gédoyn de Bellan's “Histoire memorable de Dias espagnol, et de Quixaire princesse de Moluques” (1615), this essay places The Island Princess in the thick of an appropriative process that moved from Portugal's periphery to Spain, from Spain to France, and from the Continent to England. In doing so, it also traces the contours of a mercantilist logic that linked political dominance, literary hegemony, and economic supremacy—and pursued all three as mutually reinforcing national goals.

Une lecture différente des préludes non mesurés de Louis Couperin est effectué à la lumière de nouveaux critères. Une analyse comparative est réalisée, fragment par fragment, des sources anciennes et des quatre dernières éditions modernes, en faisant intervenir les paramètres d'exécution instrumentale : les doigtés anciens et les tempéraments. Les lignes du graphisme ont été nettement définies, et les liens avec l'ornementation du chant et du luth étudiés. Les éléments stylistiques ont été clairement mis au jour. Une tentative de chronologie des sources anciennes a été établie, dont il ressort qu'il n'y aurait qu'une source véritable dont la deuxième serait issue. Une nouvelle partition est proposée, résultat de cette recherche et un enregistrement discographique la concrétise sur le plan sonore, restituant toute la rhétorique musicale propre à ces piècesA different reading of the unmeasured Preludes of Louis Couperin has been made in the light of new criteria. A comparative analysis has been achieved, fragment by fragment, of the old sources and of the latest four modern editions. Parameters of intrumental performance have been taken into account, such as old fingering technique and temperaments. Temperament as an integral part of the composition and its effect upon its rhetoric has been highlighted. The handwriting lines have been particulary and clearly defined and the links with the ornaments in singing and lute-playing have also been studied. The stylistic elements have been clearly brought to light. An attempt to establish a chronology of the old sources has been made and its results from it that there would be a unique genuine source from which the second would be derived. A new score is proposed, resulting from this research, as well as recording, which gives it a concrete sonorous expression, reproducing the musical rhetoric specific to these musical pieces

Louis Hesselin est un de ces grands amateurs parisiens du XVIle siècle dont l'existence réelle avait fini par disparaître derrière une notoriété certaine, mais devenue imprécise au gré des différents auteurs qui mentionnaient son existence. Ayant constaté qu'en dépit de cette réputation, il n'avait fait l'objet jusqu'ici d'aucune étude sérieuse, c'est cette lacune que nous avons souhaité combler, et les recherches que nous présentons ici, fondées pour l'essentiel sur de très nombreux docoments d'archives inédits, nous ont perrnis de révéler chez Louis Hesselin un individu à la personnalité riche et complexe, profondément original tout en étant pleinement le produit de son époque. Homme de culture mais peu versé dans la politique, il sut néanmoins occuper rapidement une position stratégique au contact direct de la persorme royale, privilège insîgne qui n'est pas le moindre de ses paradoxes. Aprés avoir précisé sa singulière biographie, puisqu'il benéficia très tôt, dans une existence dédiée pour l'essentiel aux plaisirs, d'importants moyens financiers, et tenté d'expliquer sa durable impunité, nous avons consacré la deuxième partie de notre étude à ses diverses résidences (deux hôtels, une maison de campagne, un château), aujourd'hui disparues. Là encore, exception faite de la première et la plus modeste, elles se distinguent par l'ingéniosité de leurs aménagements, créations auxquelles le nom de Le Vau est depuis toujours attaché. Dans une troisième partie, nous avons étudié l'aspect sans doute le plus personnel sinon le plus original de notre personnage, celui du Louis Hesselin collectionneur et mécène. En effet, nos recherches nous ont non seulement permis d'enrichir le premier aspect, celui du "curieux" aux goûts multiples qui faisait depuis longtemps sa réputation, mais aussi d'en établir un second, celui du mecènat. Cette action qui est habituellement le fait de personnages plus illustres distingue une nouvelle fois Hesselin de la plupart de ses contemporains.

Sous louis xiv, de 1661 a 1715, s'est constituee une opposition pacifique qui s'exprime par la litterature, moyen non-violent, et critique la politique belliqueuse du roi. Pour le convaincre, elle utilise les centres d'interet qui peuvent le toucher. Au debut du regne. La fontaine tente de le flechir par la voie des lettres et des arts. Lorsque louis xiv devient devot. La bruyere et fenelon lui montrent le vrai chemin de la religion. Leurs oeuvres manifestent une commune aspiration a la paix, la liberte et la sincerite. Tous trois voudraient l'unite entre le roi et ses sujets, telle qu'elle existait sous saint-louis ou francois 1er. Ils eprouvent aussi la nostalgie d'un passe mythique : age d'or ou eden d'avant la chute. Du cote de la societe. La fontaine et la bruyere plaident en faveur des petits, denoncant la loi du plus fort et les hypocrisies sociales. Du cote du prince, fenelon tente de former un roi selon des principes pacifiques et chretiens. Cette opposition ne parviendra pas a s'imposer, mais la monarchie absolue s'effondrera elleaussi apres 1715. Le siecle des lumieres reprendra alors certaines idees de ces auteurs, mais en les vidant de leur contexte historique et religieux. Or nos trois moralistes, pessimistes et individualistes, ne peuvent se rattacher a une ideologie progressiste. Au xxe siecle en revanche, nous retrouvons des traces de leur pensee, chez des pacifistes recherchant la paix par le droit et la vertu. Cette actualite prouve que de tels temoignages sont significatifs et ne doivent pas etre oublies.

La thèse étudie les modalités de coexistence entre les deux dénominations religieuses présentes dans la ville de Castres, située dans l’ancienne province du Haut-Languedoc. L’étude démontre que les conditions d’existence des réformés français se sont généralement stabilisées au cours de la période comprise entre 1629 et 1661. L’analyse des édits royaux et de la correspondance d’hommes politiques près du régime ont permis d’établir quelles étaient ces nouvelles conditions et d’exposer la mise en place d’une dynamique de clémence et de resserrement soumis aux aléas de la politique extérieure et intérieure de l’époque. Ces conditions étant établies, l’étude s’est penchée sur la nature des interactions religieuses qui constituaient l’essence même de cette coexistence. Après un portrait de la ville de Castres et de la société qui la composait, l’analyse a porté sur les composantes de la localité qui sont révélatrices d’une coexistence pacifique et fonctionnelle : la Chambre de l’Édit, le consulat urbain, le collège et l’Académie. C’est à l’intérieur de ces cadres que nous avons qualifiés d’environnements interconfessionnels que les Castrais interagissaient pour maintenir leur modus vivendi stable, paisible et fonctionnel. Les conflits n’étaient toutefois pas absents et, aux vues de cas qui exacerbèrent les tensions, l’analyse a démontré, grâce à la consultation de diverses sources, la constitution de frontières confessionnelles qui séparaient les deux communautés religieuses. Ces frontières, mobiles et changeantes, ont évolué graduellement pour devenir de plus en plus prononcées. À terme, l’analyse de ces lieux de socialisation et des diverses frontières confessionnelles a démontré la coopération entre les membres des confessions adverses et, ultimement, le choix d’une société qui privilégia l’édilité, le communautaire, l’éducation, le professionnel, et parfois les relations interpersonnelles, avant le religieux.

Ce fut à compter de l'année 1668, à l'instigation de Colbert, que l'Etat porta un réel intérêt à la décoration des vaisseaux. La profusion et le luxe de ces ornements peints et sculptés devaient " faire éclater sur la mer la magnificence " du roi et servir la propagande. Colbert confia à Charles le Brun, la conception des décors des vaisseaux de premier rang, pour qu'il y développe de nouveaux systèmes décoratifs. De cette participation du premier peintre allaient naître trois somptueux décors qui marquèrent l 'évolution de l'ornementation navale en France et qui furent à l'origine de la création des ateliers de peinture et de sculpture dans le arsenaux, dont le rayonnement fut assuré par la nomination d'artistes réputés comme Pierre Puget. En donnant la liberté d'entreprendre à des artistes venus de tous horizons, les arsenaux favorisèrent les échanges et devinrent , au moins jusqu'à la fin de la Régence, des foyers artistiques, où se brassaient les influences.

L'objet de la thèse est de mettre en lumière la fonction royale de restauration de la paix qui, au XVIIe siècle, fait partie du rôle du souverain, au même titre que le pouvoir de faire la guerre. Les négociations pour rétablir la paix entre la France et l'Espagne, menées en même temps que la guerre de 1635 à 1659, sont la base événementielle de cette recherche. La thèse comporte deux parties. La première est une chronologie de ces négociations, établie à partir des sources françaises et espagnoles, avec pour objet l'élaboration lente et difficile de la paix des Pyrénées. L'étude détaillée des sources a permis de mettre en avant des aspects particuliers ou peu développés jusqu'à présent, de l'histoire des diverses tentatives de paix. La seconde partie développe plusieurs thèmes de réflexion : la paix face à l'antagonisme franco-espagnol aux multiples racines, l'obstination en Espagne à poursuivre la guerre malgré une prise de conscience de la crise de la monarchie catholique, les négociations et les négociateurs comme instruments de la fonction pacificatrice des souverains, la paix réelle et la paix selon les conceptions du temps. Le rôle du roi dans la restauration de la paix, donne son unité à la fois au parcours chronologique et aux réflexions thématiquesThe purpose of this study is to focus on one of the major roles of a King in the 17th century : to restore the peace. The main idea is that peace, in the foreign affairs, was as major part of King's duty as was war. To illustrate this, a close analysis was performed of the various attempts of peace negotiation between France and Spain, that lasted all along the war, up to the Treaty of the Pyrenees (November 7, 1659). The first part of the document, which is basically a detailed chronology, aims to give a continuous and unified view of the of the negotiation events, in the prospective of the final peace. A large use of the French and Spanish sources allows to emphasize several previously lessened aspects of this long efforts toward peace. The second part consists of special studies on selected topics : the complexity of the antagonism between France and Spain; the reluctance in Spain to make peace in spite of the perception of a deep crisis of the monarchy; the practice of negotiation as seen from the various attempts of peace, the peace in the reality and in the mentalities of the first half of the 17th century. Each of these studies contributes to enlighten an aspect of the role of the King as a peace maker

Etude d'un manuscrit de Y. L. M. Combeau (1799-1870), traductions en breton de six livres de fables de La Fontaine faites entre 1836 et 1838 et conservées à la Bibliothèque municipale de Rennes (35). La première partie aborde les traductions bretonnes de La Fontaine, la vie et l'oeuvre de Combeau. La seconde contient la retranscription du texte original du manuscrit ainsi que sa mise au normes orthographiques actuelles. La troisième partie est un lexique, réalisé à partir des fables et illustré par des exemples, mettant en évidence la richesse du vocabulaire de l'auteur. Il est suivi d'un recensement de termes et expressions cueillis dans ses oeuvres par de grands lexicographes bretons comme Troude, Milin, Ernault et Vallée. La quatrième partie est une analyse des traductions de Combeau comparées à un échantillon représentatif de fables d'autres traducteurs, une liste de celles que nous avons collectées closant cette partie. La cinquième contient la bibliographie et des annexes : des articles et écrits divers sur l'auteur, de 1869 à nos jours et la correspondance de la revue Mignon al Labourer pour laquelle il travailla en 1833. Neuf numéros de cette revue, extrêmement rare, tous traduits par Combeau, terminent ce volume. Cette thèse contient donc tout ce qu'il nous reste de l'oeuvre très importante de Y. L. M. Combeau, une grande partie de celle-ci est, en effet, considérée comme perdueThis study of a manuscript by Y. L. M. Combeau (1799-1870) with translations into Breton of six books of the fables of La Fontaine, written in the period 1836-1838 and conserved at the Municipal library of Rennes, France. Volume I deals with the life and works of Combeau and the translations into Breton of La Fontaine. Volume II comprises the litteral and the orthographically mdernised transcription of the original text of the manuscript. Volume III comprises a glossary with accompanying quotations in order to highlight the richness of vocabulary of the author. This is followed by an inventory of terms and expressions harvested from the works of Combeau by great Breton lexicographers such as Troude, Milin, Ernault and Vallée. Volume IV analyses Combeau's translations and compares them to a sample collection of extracts taken from other translations by other translators of the fables of La Fontaine. A full inventory of those we collected is provided at the back of this volume. Volume V comprises a bibliography, and an annex of diverse material such as articles and writings on Combeau from 1869 to today. This tome also incorporates correspondence to the periodical 'Migon al Labourer' for which the author worked in 1833. A collection of nine extremely rare editions of this periodical, all worked in 1833. A collection of nine extremely rare editions of this periodical, all translated by Combeau, bring this volume to a close. This thesis therefore, contains all that remains to us of the most important works of Y. L. M. Combeau, most of which is considered to be lost

A l'occasion des guerres de la ligue d'Augsbourg et de la succession d'Espagne, Louis XIV se rend, par deux fois, maître du comté de Nice, possession du duc de Savoie. Cette acquisition s'effectue en réaction à la politique versatile de Victor-Amédée II, qui au commencement de chaque conflit, rompt promptement son alliance avec la France pour rejoindre le camp ennemi. En raison des rétrocessions officielles des traités de Turin (1696) et d'Utrecht (1713), ces périodes sont, le plus souvent, qualifiées " d'occupations ". Mais l'emploi de ce mot n'est pas sans conséquence : il implique que le " roi-soleil " s'est emparé momentanément de Nice, avec l'intention de se substituer que pour le temps des conflits à l'autorité de la Maison de Savoie. Enfermée dans cette définition, la présence française ne présente aucun impact politique réel, car elle n'a pas pour objectif de perdurer. Or différents éléments attestent de la volonté du souverain français d'y exercer définitivement son autorité. Après consultation des généalogistes de la cour, chargés de prouver la légitimité de l'annexion, Louis XIV se proclame à deux reprises " comte de Nice ". Après chaque invasion, le roi de France utilise les techniques éprouvées par le passé pour assimiler une province étrangère. Pour ce faire, les Niçois doivent se soumettre à différentes obligations : l'accueil de commissaires du roi, l'organisation et la prestation d'un serment de fidélité, l'installation et l'entretien des troupes aux frais de la population. Par l'établissement d'une autorité d'ailleurs modérée, Louis XIV réussit surtout à rattacher au niveau judiciaire et fiscal le comté de Nice au royaume de France, sans susciter pour autant l'hostilité des habitants. Mais les deux fois, le souverain français est finalement contraint à une rétrocession en faveur de Victor-Amédée II. Les négociations de paix mettent un terme à cette tentative d'assimilation politique, judiciaire et administrative, en permettant le retour des Niçois sous domination de la Maison de Savoie. A l'issue du premier conflit, et plus encore du second, la France n'a plus les moyens humains et financiers pour se faire reconnaître l'annexion du comté de Nice par le concert des nations européennes.

En 1667, commence la construction de l’Observatoire à Paris. Dès son origine, c’est un projet qui représente une rupture dans l’Europe des savoirs. On le conçoit comme un magnifique palais installé dans un vaste parc au milieu d’autres constructions plus légères. Idéalement, les savants de la nouvelle Académie des sciences, fondée dans un même geste, pourront y loger, s’y réunir et y trouver toutes facilités pour se livrer à la pratique savante. Pour le roi, il s’agit avant tout de développer les connaissances astronomiques et géographiques : l’Observatoire est le réservoir de cette expertise cruciale et le symbole de son pouvoir et de son rayonnement.Au carrefour des sciences studies, de l’histoire des pratiques d’observation astronomique et des études sur les correspondances savantes à l’âge classique, cette thèse a pour objet de revenir sur l’histoire de l’Observatoire, en interrogeant à nouveaux frais les contours précis du projet initial et les modalités de sa mise en œuvre dans le Grand Siècle, qui correspond aux premières décennies de son existence. Revisitant les travaux classiques des historiens des sciences, notre étude se structure autour d’un ensemble considérable de lettres et de notes inédites de Giovanni Domenico Cassini et de ses correspondants. Professeur d’astronomie à Bologne jusqu’en 1669, astronome royal et premier savant courtisan de Louis XIV par la suite, Cassini est appelé en France pour donner un avis sur le bâtiment en construction. Il y vivra et travaillera pendant tout le Grand Siècle : ses manuscrits constituent une source particulièrement riche pour étudier cette institution, réinterroger les choix fondamentaux la concernant et suivre l’évolution de son dessein.De cet examen, nous concluons que bien que d’autres lieux d’observation céleste aient existé auparavant, Cassini invente une nouvelle forme d’organisation de la pratique savante. Fonctionnant sans règles explicites, l’Observatoire innove cependant grandement dans l’organisation du travail collectif au sein d’un établissement dédié à la pratique astronomique et dans la constitution de réseaux d’observateurs aux quatre coins du monde travaillant de manière coordonnée à la poursuite d’un projet commun au service de la monarchie. Nous montrons que le savant organise l’Observatoire autour d’un concept qui provient de son travail sur les méridiennes italiennes, l’esattezza des mesures et de l’écart entre terre et le ciel. Les techniques de l’Observatoire se répandront ainsi grâce à lui : les réseaux de sociabilité de l’Italien conditionneront le fonctionnement quotidien de l’établissement et la circulation des savoirs dans la ville et dans le monde entierIn 1667, the construction of the Observatoire de Paris began. For the king, it is above all a question of developing astronomical and geographical knowledge: the Observatoire is the reservoir of this crucial expertise and the symbol of its power and influence.At the crossroads of the science science, the history of astronomical observation practices and the studies on correspondence in the classical age, the aim of this thesis is to return to the history of the Observatoire, questioning once again the precise outlines of the initial project and the methods of its implementation in the Grand Siècle, which corresponds to the first decades of its existence. Revisiting the classic works of historians of science, our study is structured around a considerable number of letters and unpublished notes by Giovanni Domenico Cassini and his correspondents. Professor of astronomy in Bologna until 1669, royal astronomer and first courtier of Louis XIV thereafter, Cassini was called to France to give an opinion on the building under construction. He lived and worked there throughout the Great Century: his manuscripts constitute a particularly rich source for studying this institution, questioning the fundamental choices concerning it and following the evolution of its purpose.From this examination, we conclude that although other celestial observation sites have existed before, Cassini invented a new kind of organisation of pratique savante. Functioning without explicit rules, the Observatoire nevertheless greatly innovates in the organisation of collective work within an establishment dedicated to astronomical practice and in the constitution of networks of observers around the world working in a coordinated manner in pursuit of a common project at the service of the monarchy. In the thesis we show that the savant organises the Observatory around a concept that comes from his work on the Italian meridians, the esattezza of measurements and the gap between Earth and Sky. The techniques of the Observatoire will spread thanks to him: the networks of sociability of the Italian will condition the daily functioning of the establishment and the circulation of knowledge in the city and throughout the world
