Abstract:
AbstractThis article demonstrates how migration formed a process of memory construction in the work and thought of Russian émigré composer Arthur Lourié (1891–1966). It analyses Lourié’s song cycle Recollection of Petersburg, composed over two decades and across four countries, providing close readings of music and poetry and exploring the network of intertextual connections the cycle activates. Lourié has proven a difficult subject because of the diversity of aesthetic positions he took from decade to decade. Recollection allows us to trace a line of continuity as he passed through these incarnations, revealing an aesthetics of accumulation and arrangement with origins in Acmeist poetics. This aesthetics, in turn, served as a coping strategy for Lourié’s life in emigration, as he sought to order the voices of memory and escape the flow of time. Lourié’s case will contribute to our understanding of the profound impact of migration on music in the twentieth century.

Abstract:
AbstractArthur Vincent Lourié (1891–1966), futurist, communist commissar of music, and close friend of Stravinsky in Paris in the 1920s, was an important member of avant-garde Russian artistic circles in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Yet by the 1950s he seems to have faded into obscurity. This article attempts to fill the gap left by the lack of discussion of the strange permutations of Lourié’s career after his emigration in 1922 by way of an analysis of his miniature 1961 song cycle Zaklinaniya (‘Incantations’). The cycle consists of five settings of lines from Anna Ahkmatova’s Poema bez geroya (‘Poem Without a Hero’), whose first part recalls Lourié and Akhmatova’s shared past in Russia’s Silver Age. Akhmatova (1889–1966), an intimate friend of the dandyish Lourié and at the centre of avant-garde artistic circles in pre-Revolutionary St Petersburg, describes the early 1910s as a Meyerholdian nightmarish masquerade in which the protagonists were constantly in danger of losing their identity through nihilistic role playing. Lourié’s elusive figure can be seen as the embodiment in the Poema of the frightening, superfluous shadow with ‘neither face nor name’. Rather than any unfortunate turn of political or personal history, it was Lourié’s affection for masks – for taking up exaggerated poses and concealing his real face – that provides the most compelling reason for his gradual disappearance from view in the chaos of the first half of the twentieth century.

Arthur Louri??s conception of revolution (political as well as cultural) is explored through his writings, with particular emphasis on its evolution from his Russian period to his Parisian and American exiles. Analyzing Louri??s Eurasianist views specifically I argue that through his association with Eurasianism and his engagement with Neoclassicism Louri? did not abandon his revolutionary disposition; the means through which his revolutionism was pursued as well as the ideals that shaped it were merely redefined, while remaining firmly grounded in the Silver Age.

Abstract:
AbstractRussian composer Arthur Vincent Lourié (1881/2–1966) dedicated his The Blackamoor of Peter the Great (1948–1961), an opera based on Pushkin's story about the poet's African great-grandfather, to ‘Russian culture, the Russian people and Russian history.’ Neoclassical in its subject matter, reliance on conventional musical forms, and adherence to tonality, Lourié's Blackamoor is nevertheless also an exemplary symbolist opera. This article explains three symbolist aspects of the work: the sources of its libretto (Lourié's librettist Irina Graham interspersed the libretto with symbolist texts), its multi-layered cultural associations, and Lourié's decision to liberate and embody the erotic drive of the main character Ibrahim by representing it as the figure of Eros. Eradicated during the years of Stalinist terror, the culture of Silver Age Russia thus continued to find a voice in the emigrant Lourié's last opera.

Pierova, Maryna. "“CINQ PRELUDES FRAGILES” FOR PIANO BY A. LOURIÉ: THE ATTEMPT OF COMPOSITIONAL AND DRAMATURGICAL ANALYSIS." Problems of Interaction Between Arts, Pedagogy and the Theory and Practice of Education 58, no. 58 (March 10, 2021): 53–64. http://dx.doi.org/10.34064/khnum1-58.04.

Abstract:
Background. The article identifies the stylistic principles of composer’s thinking of A. Lourié on the basis of the “Cinq preludes fragiles” for piano op. 1. The musical science works of recent years, which include the articles by M. Gorodilova, L. Sitsky and D. Gojowy, deal with the problem of repressed Russian avant-garde. Objective. The purpose of the research is to reveal the specifics of individual composer style of A. Lourié on the basis of the “Cinq preludes fragiles” for piano op. 1. Methods. Achieving the goal of the research involves using the following methods: stylistic approach, genre approach and compositional approach. Results and Discussion. Exposition of the main material of the study includes the compositional, dramaturgical and stylistic analysis of the cycle, which is recognized as the first piece by A. Lourié. The analysis of the intonational dramaturgy of the cycle by A. Lourié is a necessary stage in the theoretical understanding of the composer’s artistic thinking and the stylistic features of his heritage. Prelude No. 1 (Lento, es-moll) is a kind of introduction to the holistic “plot” of the cycle, as it represents the world of the lyric hero. It can be assumed that this is the image of the Poet, which is characteristic of the romantic tradition. Prelude No. 2 (Calme, pas vite, es-moll) is also lyrical in nature, with a touch of melancholy, but more active and strong-willed. Prelude No. 3 (Tendre, pensif, B-dur) is the lyric center of the cycle. This is a musical pastoral. In this prelude, various psychological modes are combined: the union of man and nature (contemplation), the thoughts of a man alone with himself (reflection), an internal conversation with the creator (prayer). Prelude No. 4 (Affabile, F-dur) is recognized as a bright intermezzo. The miniature is imbued with states of exultation, delight, joy of being. The general mood of the prelude is supported by the author’s remark “joyeux, capricieusement” (“fun, capriciously”) and corresponds to the intermezzo compositional function. The character of Prelude No. 5 (Modéré, gis-moll) is melancholic and detached. This miniature is very close to the Prelude No. 1, with which it creates an arch of images of the dialectic of the protagonist’s soul. It seems that the hero had lost his life goals again. The dramaturgical author’s intention is realized as follows: Preludes No. 1 and No. 2 represent a double exposure, which reveals the figurative dichotomy of «melancholia – activity» as two hypostases of a lyrical hero; Prelude No. 3 shows the picture of nature and a man’s attitude to it; Prelude No. 4 is the bright culmination of the image of a dream; in Prelude No. 5, a lyrical hero returns to reality. The results of the research support the idea that the main features of A. Lourié’s individual compositional style are the semantics of “fragility”, the principle of thematic concentration and miniaturism of intellection. The semantics of “fragility” is manifested in the poetic aura of the symbolism of the “silver age”, which represented an idea of beauty as the ultimate, vanishing state. The principle of thematic concentration is manifested in the saturation of events in a unit of musical time. The miniaturism of thinking is the ability to model and reflect global ideas of human life in the performing process in a chamber chronotope. Conclusion. In the article the unity of the content and form-building levels of the cycle “Cinq preludes fragiles” for piano op. 1 is revealed. The refraction of the romantic tradition of interpreting the piano in the works of A. Lourié was studied. The role of the miniature genre in the context of the composer’s piano heritage is described. The specificity of metro-rhythm, harmonic and intonational semantics of A. Lourié’s piano works is revealed. The prospects for further researches include the necessity of in-depth study of composer heritage of A. Lourié.

It can hardly have escaped the reader's attention that certain changes have taken place in Eastern Europe and beyond. In December 1980, when Lewis Foreman published his comments about Nikolai Roslavets in Tempo No. 135, discussion of the Russian modernists, of composers such as Roslavets, Lourié and Mossolov, was still largely impossible in the Soviet Union. It followed that it was extremely hard to find out what music had in fact survived in archives public and private, and even harder to get that music performed.

Abstract:
This article discusses the concept of I'jaz al-Qur'an and its relationship with Arabic as a form of criticism of the logos concept put forward by Louis Awad. This research is a literature review conducted by collecting related data sources to analyze the character's thought in question. The concept of I'jaz al-Qur'an is a study related to the faith of Muslims, in this case the existence of the al-Qur'an as Kalamullah. Among the Islamic scholars, two views have been very influential since this issue was raised, namely the Asy'ariyah and Mu'tazilah circles. These two groups agree to believe that the Qur'an is Kalamullah. However, in this case, Dr. Louwis expresses this opinion and relates it to the concept of Christian Logos, in which the concept of al-Qur'an, as the eternal Kalamullah (qadim) put forward by two major groups in Islamic Theology, is an adoption of the Christian Logos concept. The misappropriation of the information provided by Dr. Louwis shows his lack of understanding and mastery regarding the issues he addresses in his book. Not supported by historical facts and correct scientific studies, he conveyed in his book a form of hatred against Islam, the Koran and the Arabic language in particular and the Arab nation in general.
