Poysti, Pontus. "Theory and praxis : John Zizioulas and Andrew Louth compared." Thesis, Enskilda Högskolan Stockholm, Teologiska högskolan Stockholm, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ths:diva-1121.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a critical study of John Zizioulas’ use of the inner Trinitarian relations as a model and ontological foundation for ecclesial praxis. It compares Zizioulas to Andrew Louth, who, based on his understanding of the Incarnation as recapitulating creation, begins in the economy. The purpose is to explicate how the two approaches could affect the role of theology in the realization of praxis. Zizioulas is criticized in his attempt to create a holistic structure, as it implies that his reading of the fathers and his understanding of praxis must be congruous with his Trinitarian logic. Louth, on the other hand, differentiates between God and creation, which enables him to describe how we can transcend ourselves by relating to God, without the risk of confusing revelation or our experience of Him with His essence, which is beyond words. The ontological difference between God and creation means, in Louth’s implicit criticism of Zizioulas, that the task of the theologian is to enable communication about what the shared experience of God could mean in a particular time and place – to which there could be a diversity of ideas – not to dictate principles from an idea of totality, or a realm that transcends existence as we know it. It also implies that encountering God in and through creation, enables communication with the world and other fields of study.

Vaughan, Louise. "Trophic modelling of the Lough Neagh ecosystem, Northern Ireland." Thesis, University of Ulster, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.554276.

Full text
Abstract:
Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles. The lough is an important multi-purpose resource for the province of Northern Ireland. Previous research on the lough was combined with data from this study to analyse trophic components of the Lough Neagh ecosystem. Analysis of the biomass and abundance of taxonomic groups indicated that size-structuring was important within the system. Macro-invertebrates showed strong evidence of size-structuring over a depth gradient with biomass, abundance and body-size all increasing with depth. Stable isotope analysis showed the lough to be a relatively simple system with strong bases in planktivory and detritivory. It also highlighted the need for further research into other possible base sources within the lake food web. A mass balance trophic model was constructed for the system using the user friendly software Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE). Twenty functional groups were used in the analysis and EwE was used to assess the trophic relationship, energy flow and interactions between them. The model showed the under-utilisation of phytoplankton and detritus by consumers in the system and hence the low transfer efficiency of 6.4% for the overall system. Summary statistics sensu Odum showed that the lough is its early stages of development and consequently may be prone to perturbations particularly anthropogenic events. The model allowed for key gaps in the present research on Lough Neagh to be pinpointed. It is recommended that any further studies on the Lough Neagh ecosystem should include components on the waterfowl populations surrounding the lough as well as incorporating a bacterial element into any future models. The Ecosim component to EwE was investigated as a management tool for the lake system. The Ecosim component was capable of predicting general trends but was not recommended for use as a sole management tool for the ecosystem but rather as part of an integrated management system.

Mimoso, João Nuno Maximino. "Assessment of eutrophication status of two Northern Irish Loughs." Master's thesis, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/3927.

Abstract:
Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia do Ambiente, perfil Engenharia Sanitária
Coastal eutrophication is a global problem which affects many natural systems and human activities throughout the world. The phenomenon of eutrophication has increased substantially due to human activities. It is caused by excess nutrients and is identified by the emergence of some symptoms. The proposed assessment will address this problem in a more specific way. The Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status (ASSETS)methodology is going to be performed to two Northern Irish Loughs in order to rank their eutrophication status and allow a comparison with other existing methods. The data available for these systems allowed the implementation of this innovative methodology, which can provide a classification based on pressure, state and response. Thus, by considering the influences of anthropogenic activities over the coastal areas, examination of specific symptoms of the water systems and analyzing the indicators for future response, it is possible to achieve consistent results regarding the quality of the water in the “loughs” and, consequently, identify the most adequate tools to enable their proper management. By controlling the nutrient enrichment of coastal areas it is possible to avoid problems, such as, fish kills, interdiction of shellfish aquaculture, loss or degradation of sea grass beds and smothering of bivalves and other benthic organisms. As a result, many social and economical costs can be reduced. ASSETS was successfully applied to both Strangford Lough and Belfast Lough, classifying them as “Moderate”. This classification will not change their water quality status under the Water Framework Directive, Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive or Nitrates Directive, however, it is a tool to guide policy makers into better decisions in terms of future management.

Fitzgerald, John Andrew. "Pollen and spore assemblages from the Oligocene Lough Neagh Group." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10365/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was initiated to solve a stratigraphic problem for the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland prior to the revision in 1997 of the 1:250000 map of the solid geology of Northern Ireland. An exploratory drilling programme carried out by the Survey in 1983/1984 revealed the existence of previously unknown Tertiary sediments north west of the Tow Valley Fault. The boreholes revealed a sequence of clays and lignites that were attributed to the Lough Neagh Group. These lay above an interbedded sequence of litho marge, pyroclastics and lacustrine deposits termed the Dunaghy Formation. The Geological Survey required an age to be assigned to this formation and it was proposed that the use of the preserved pollen and spore assemblages offered the best means for dating the sequence. In order to achieve this four boreholes were analysed. Boreholes 13/611, 13/603, 36/4680 and 27/415 contain the Lough Neagh Group. In addition 13/611 and 13/603 contain the Dunaghy Formation. From the pollen and spore assemblages recovered an Oligocene age IS confirmed for the Lough Neagh Group and proposed for the Dunaghy Formation. This information led to the attribution of an Oligocene age to the Dunaghy Formation in the 1997 revised 1:250000 Geological Map of Northern Ireland. The palaeovegetation deduced from the recovered pollen and spore assemblages is in accordance with an Oligocene cooling. The climax angiosperm vegetation, predominantly consisting of temperate forms with some megatherm taxa, grew in a raised bog forest ecosystem within a fluvial-lacustrine environment. All pollen and spore taxa recovered are described including new forms identified. A correlation of the four sections is proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
A 1998 study estimated the stocks of oysters in Strangford Lough to be 100,000. In 2002 the estimated population was 1 million. Stock's peaked in 2003 at 1.2 million. By 2004 there had been a decline of>300,000 oysters. This decline left an estimated 600,000 in 2005. The decline appears to be the result ofunregulated harvesting. Shellfish gatherers were regularly observed in the present study area. Natural mortality can be disregarded as a cause of decrease since no empty oyster valves were evident. In investigating recruitment potential spatfall surveys were undertaken from June to September 2003 and 2004. The research into spatfall patterns and spatial expansion has identified locations suitable for broodstock sanctuaries and where spat settlement is possible. The findings for 2003-2004 did not detect any shift in the timing ofspatfall since the 1998 survey. Both surveys identified July and August as the months with the highest densities of spat. The highest densities ofoysters (>2m2 ) were recorded on littoral mixed shell (LMX). Sites in the southern basin were coded as (LMX) such locations may be important areas of possible settlement in the future. Investigations into the epibiota on the shell of 0. edulis showed increases in biodiversity are possible during O. edulis restoration. Surfaces ofthe oyster shell showed an increase in species richness and diversity when compared with other hard substrata. Increases in size and age are proportional to increases in species diversity. This work shows that hydrographical conditions the availability ofcultch and the spawning potential ofan un-fragmented stock can augment and rejuvenate the current population. It has collated sufficient base line data to initiate and monitor future restoration programmes. Careful management and policing is ess~ntial for any success. A reclamation and costing plan for any future rejuvenation programmes has also been detailed.

Full text
Abstract:
Lough Neagh Special Protection Area (SPA) was one of the most important non-estuarine sites for overwintering wildfowl in Britain and Ireland. Up to 100 000 diving ducks overwintered at the site during the early 1990s, however, by the winter of 2003/04, populations of pochard (Aythya ferina), tufted duck (A. fuligula), scaup (A. marila) and goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) had declined to 23 500 individuals. The changepoint in the temporal trend was the winter of 2000101 with the declines occurring rapidly within 2 winters. Comparable declines were observed in some resident and partially resident species. The density and biomass of benthic macro invertebrates, the main food source of diving ducks, declined by 66-67% between 1997/98 and 2010. This reduction was correlated with a major decline in chlorophyll a concentrations, suggesting a shift in the Lough Neagh ecosystem coincident with the changes observed in the bird community. However, there was no substantial shift in the diving duck diet comparable to the shift observed in the availability of their prey. Stable isotope analysis of duck tissue collected throughout 2010-2012 suggested that 57% of birds, mostly 1 st winter birds, had fed recently on other waterbodies, indicating high levels of dynamic within-winter movements and population redistribution. Analysis of ringing and recovery data provided support for the phenomenon of migratory short-stopping in goldeneye; however, this was not the case for the other species Neve11heless, a meta-analysis of count data suggested rapid climate-driven shifts in the wintering distributions of tufted duck and goldeneye in response to increasingly mild winter temperatures. It is concluded that intrinsic and extrinsic factors coincidentally conspired to make Lough Neagh a less attractive overwintering site, leading to a marked decline in diving duck numbers after the winter of 2000/01.

Chaipongrattana, Pornphun. "Development of a grapefruit-flavoured spirit with the opalescence properties of pastis." Click here to access this resource online, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/428.

Full text
Abstract:
In the form of a potable spirit, an extract of grapefruit skin has been found to develop an attractive opalescence when diluted to below about 38 % ethanol (v/v). This phenomenon is analogous to the pastis effect, called louching, common in many drinks popular in some countries bordering the Mediterranean. The main objective of this research was to develop spirit liquor with commercial potential from grapefruit skin, largely a waste commercial product, as the dominant if not exclusive ingredient other than alcohol and water. This would require making extracts by distillation of undried skins, which would develop a dense opalescence significantly below 40 % v/v ethanol, the common alcoholic strength of spirits as sold in New Zealand. The product concept was thus a clear liquid which when poured over ice for example, would yield a cool opalescent drink with a characteristic grapefruit flavour. In the case of citrus, the chemical basis of louching is the greater solubility of citrus skin terpenes, principally limonene, in ethanol than in water. The louch point is synonymous with the chemical expression critical micelle concentration, detected here by light scattering at the arbitrary wavelength of 450 nm. Early results with an obvious opalescence showed that the alcohol concentration at which the terpenes ceased to be soluble in the grapefruit distillate was about 38 % (v/v). This point was similar to that for pastis (Pernod brand), where the principle louchable ingredient is anethole. However, the light scattering was much greater for pastis. Thus, a grapefruit spirit sold at 40 % ethanol with the louching intensity of pastis should require increasing the solubility of limonene in solutions with a lower ethanol concentration. This in turn should allow higher concentrations of limonene in true solution in 40 % ethanol, theoretically resulting in a more intense louch in the final drink. Thus, a broad range of hydrocolloids and surfactants was tested in an attempt to increase the solubility of limonene in lower ethanol concentrations. None of hydrocolloids or surfactants lowered the louch point of a standard limonene concentration in ethanol/water. The informal flavour assessment showed that the spirit flavour from grapefruit zest alone lacked intensity. It was then thought that better flavour might be obtained by using the whole grapefruit (zest, pith, and juice) rather than zest alone. The additional of pith or pith plus juice caused no significant change in the louch point or light scattering. However, the final flavour was informally judged to be more intense than that derived from zest alone. The problem still remained that the light scattering of grapefruit distillate was never as high as that achieved by pastis, even though it was found (by gas chromatography) that the concentration of limonene (w/w) in the grapefruit spirit was at least as high as that of anethole in pastis. The cause was due to the fact that as a louched compound, anethole was a solid with a flat crystal structure because the melting point (21.4C) is well above that of a cool drink (Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 1947). By contrast, limonene remains a liquid even in an iced drink because its melting point is far below 0C. Flat crystals would obviously scatter light far more than would a micelle containing a liquid, in this case limonene. Although such a grapefruit distillate did not louch as well as pastis, it could still have market potential on the basis that it would be made from the distinctive New Zealand cultivar of grapefruit. Thus a formal sensory assessment was conducted, using a focus group. The grapefruit distillates at 40 % ethanol were perceived by most panellists as refreshing, clean, fruity, and citrusy in aroma, but somewhat deficient in grapefruit flavour, and there was a common perception of strong chemical finish. At this stage of development a commercial proposition cannot be sensibly made.
