Abstract:
Airfields are used in common polymer fiber spinning processes, such as melt blowing and spunbonding. A pair of louvers was installed in the air flow field of a melt blowing slot die. Previous research work has shown that, with louvers in place, the air velocity along the fiber threadline is higher than the velocity when louvers are not used. Since the air velocity is what drives the spinning process, the presence of louvers was expected to increase the attenuation of the molten filaments and thus improve the melt blowing process. Melt blowing runs were made with variable louver size (chord), louver separation, louver distance from the die face, the angle of the louvers relative to the die face, and air flow rate. Fibers were collected and fiber diameters were measured.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of an experimental study of louvers that are used for diversion of fish from water intakes and canals. This investigation was conducted in two phases. Phase I involved the field testing of a louver with curved slats for the guidance of hatchery-reared juvenile rainbow trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss) for louver angles θ of 7.2° and 17.0°. Phase II was a laboratory study with flat slats placed perpendicular to the approaching flow with θ of 10.0° and 15.0°. The velocity in the bypass in terms of the approach velocity increased to 1.7 and 2.5, respectively, for the curved and flat louvers for a bypass width b equal to 5% of the width of the approach channel B. The discharge in the bypass channel Qb in terms of the discharge in the approach channel Q was 0.15 and 0.20 for b/B = 0.10 for the curved and flat louvers, respectively, and Qb/Q = 0.07 for b/B = 0.05 for both the curved and flat louver slats. Key words: fish diversion, louvers, canals, open channels, water intakes, turbulent flows.

Full text
Abstract:
This study performs a 3D turbulent flow numerical simulation to improve heat transfer characteristics of wavy finandtube heat exchangers. A compound design encompassing louver, flat, and vortex generator onto wavy fins can significantly enhance the heat transfer performance of wavy fin-and-tube heat exchangers. Replacement of wavy fins around tubes with flat fins is not effective as far as the reduction of thermal resistance is concerned, although an appreciable pressure drop reduction can be achieved. Adding two louvers with a width of 8 mm to the flat portion can reduce thermal resistance up to 6% in comparison with the reference wavy fin. Increasing the louver number and width can further decrease the thermal resistance. Also, it is found that the optimum louver angle is equal to the wavy angle for offering the lowest thermal resistance. Therefore, compound geometry with three louvers, a width of 12 mm, and the louver angle being equal to wavy angle with waffle height to be the same as fin pitch of the reference wavy fin has the most reduction in thermal resistance of 16% for a pumping power of 0.001 W. Adding punching longitudinal vortex generators on this compound geometry can further decrease thermal resistance up to 18%.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with prediction of the air-side heat transfer coefficient of the louver fin geometry used in automotive radiators. An analytical model was developed to predict the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the louver fin geometry. The model is based on boundary layer and channel flow equations, and accounts for the “flow efficiency” in the array, as previously reported by Webb and Trauger. The model has no empirical constants. The model allows independent specifications of all of the geometric parameters of the louver fin. This includes the number of louvers over the flow depth, the louver width and length, and the louver angle. The model was validated by predicting the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of 32 louver arrays tested by Davenport, which spanned hydraulic diameter based Reynolds numbers of 300–2800. At the highest Reynolds number, all of the heat transfer coefficients were predicted within a maximum error of −14 / + 25 percent, and a mean error of ± 8 percent. The high Reynolds number friction factors were predicted with a maximum error −22 /+ 26 percent, with a mean error of ± 8 percent. The error ratios were slightly higher at the lowest Reynolds numbers.

Abstract:
Micro and Nano-satellites with their low thermal capacitance are vulnerable to rapid temperature fluctuations. Therefore, thermal control becomes more important, but the limitations on mass and electrical power require new approaches. Possible solutions to actively vary the heat rejection of the satellite in response to variations in the thermal load and environmental condition are the use of variable emissivity devices, such as micro louvers, micro thermal switches, etc. Micro louvers with small volume, low weight, less power consumption and large emissivity variation, will be the more suitable solution for micro and Nano-satellites thermal control. In this paper, a polyimide based micro louver is developed. The device structure was designed, the actuation voltage was analyzed theoretically and fabrication process was described. The main parameters were tested and results were presented.

Abstract:
Ventilation in buildings is the simplest and most convenient way to purify indoor air. However, when the ventilation is not enough due to natural ventilation, it should be cleaned by mechanical ventilation or air purifier. This process requires building energy. Therefore, it is possible to save the energy of the building by merely increasing the natural ventilation efficiency. This study conducted airflow analysis simulations to investigate the effects of changes in the shape of ventilation openings and louvers on the ventilation efficiency of a window ventilation system. The streamlined window opening exhibited a greater increase in airflow (41.3%) than did the conventional window (24.3%) for the ventilation model with four openings. It was also observed that flow separation and wakes were generated by the adverse pressure gradient arising from the increased airflow speed when a louver was employed. Based on these results, it can be concluded that using a louver as a wind augmentation device is an obstacle to improving the airflow in a window ventilation system.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Previous research has suggested that hand dryers may operate at dangerously loud levels for adults. No research has explored whether they operate at a safe level for children’s hearing. Children’s ears are more sensitive to damage from loud sounds than adult ears. Health Canada prohibits the sale of toys with peak loudness greater than 100 dB. This study tested installed dryers in public washrooms to see if they were safe for children’s hearing. Methods Forty-four hand dryers in public washrooms were each measured for peak sound levels in a standardized fashion, including at children’s ear canal heights. Each dryer was measured at 10 different combinations of heights and distances from the wall, and with and without hands in the air stream coming from the hand dryer, for a total of 20 measurements per dryer. Results Xlerator units performed the loudest, with all being louder than 100 dBA at all measurements whenever hands were in the airstream. Several Dyson Airblade models were also very loud, including the single loudest measurement of 121 dBA. While some other units operated at low sound levels, many units were louder at children’s ear heights than at adult ear heights. Discussion Many dryers operated much louder than their manufacturers claimed, usually greater than 100 dBA (the maximum allowable noise level for products/toys meant for children). Conclusion This study suggests that many hand dryers operate at levels far louder than their manufacturers claim and at levels that are clearly dangerous to children’s hearing.

ISSN 0804–4643 We studied the luteinizing hormone (LH) secretory pattern in three patients, aged 30, 23 and 43 years, with gynecomastia due to Leydig cell tumor of the testis, before and 6 months after unilateral orchidectomy. The results were compared to those of 11 normal fertile controls aged 20–35 years. Blood sampling was done at 20-min intervals from 22.00 h to 10.00 h. The LH data were analyzed with the Cluster analysis algorithm with "optimal parameters for LH male data" to determine the pulse interval and pulse amplitude. The Expfit program was applied to LH pulses to calculate the apparent half-life of immunoreactive LH. Before surgery, when compared to controls, the patients had a low to normal testosterone/estradiol ratio (0.053, 0.110, 0.046 vs 0.148 ± 0.038) and mean LH levels (1.96, 3.7, 2.55 vs 4.0 ± 1.9 IU/l), decreased pulse amplitude (2.65, 3.01, 2.21 vs 3.31 ± 1.41 IU/l) and reduced apparent half-life of LH (74, 69, 78 vs 97 ± 16 min). After removal of the Leydig cell tumor, the testosterone/estradiol ratio returned to the normal range (0.141, 0.177, 0.093) while an increase in mean LH levels (5.75, 7.90, 4.88 IU/l), LH pulse amplitude (3.07, 6.05, 2.86 IU/l) and apparent half-life of LH (138, 106, 104 min) was observed in all three patients. Our data indicate that endogenous hyperestrogenism in patients with Leydig cell tumor of the testis results in an inhibition of LH secretion, and suggests that such inhibition could result from a reduction in pulse amplitude and apparent half-life. Full text
Abstract:
A prior study of the acoustical performance of a double-skin facade (DSF) as a noise barrier was carried out based on the percentage of the air vent open surface area, shading louver configurations, and shading louver surface materials. Earlier research findings led to experimental investigations of the acoustical performance capabilities of compact silencers to replace DSF air vents as both noise barriers and air channels because DSF air cavities, which contribute to natural ventilation performance (e.g., wind-driven or buoyancy-driven performance), are acoustically vulnerable to noise transmitted through the air vents. This experimental investigation aims to explore noise reduction (NR) through compact silencers applied to DSF air vents. Double-skin facade mock-up test cases were designed based on three test scenarios of a ventilation open surface area: (1) a 100%air vent open surface area (open mode), (2) a 0% air vent open surface area (closed mode), and (3) a compact silencer. From a data analysis of DSF mock-up test results, the overall NR values of a DSFmock-up ranged from20 to 37 dB(A) depending on the number of compact silencers and the shading louver orientation used. Configurations of compact silencers and shading louvers helped the DSF mock-up achieve additionalNR values of 5 to 10 dB(A) depending on the test case. Moreover, applying compact silencers to a naturally ventilated DSF mock-up led to significant noise reduction at low frequencies (125Hz).

Abstract:
Windcatcher louvers are designed to capture air flowing outside a building in order to increase its natural ventilation. There are no studies that have designed the shape of the louver to increase the natural ventilation efficiency of the building. This study aimed to conduct a computational fluid dynamics simulation and mock-up test of a Clark Y airfoil-type windcatcher louver designed to increase the natural ventilation in a building. The following test results were obtained. The optimal angle of attack of the airfoil was calculated via a numerical analysis, which demonstrated that the wind speed was at its highest when the angle of attack was 8°; further, flow separation occurred at angles exceeding 8°, at which point the wind speed began to decrease. The results of the mock-up test demonstrated that the time required to reduce the concentration of fine particles in the indoor air was 120 s shorter when the windcatcher was installed than when it was not, which indicating that the time to reduce particles represents a 37.5%reduction. These results can be seen as reducing the energy consumption of ventilation in the building because the natural ventilation efficiency is increased.

Abstract:
This paper presents an assessment and comparison of the effects of static and kinetic external shading elements on the dynamic measurement of daylighting. For this purpose, we used a method and parametric tool developed previously for the design and analysis of external shading elements in buildings. The proposed approach was used to compare static and dynamic movement scenarios for achieving optimal internal adjusted useful daylight illuminances (AUDI). The current paper presents the results of a methodical analysis, which compared various types of louvers in static and dynamic operation scenarios for a typical office in a Mediterranean climate. The results show that dynamically adjusted louvers perform notably better than fixed or seasonally adjusted modes of operation. The results show that dynamic operation scenarios can increase the AUDI by up to 51%. The results also show that in some conditions the existing rules of thumb fail to predict the correct design approach to louver geometry and that the use of rules of thumb in architectural daylight design needs to be revaluated.

The study was made on a MEMS-based thermal emissivity variable micro-thermal control device to meet the requirements of the thermal control system of the spacecraft. An emissivity adjustment model for louvers was established. Main parameters that influence the equivalent emissivity of the louver were also investigated. Characteristics such as the electrostatic torque driven by parallel electrodes were modeled and analyzed. As a result, curves of the relationship between angles driven by parallel electrodes and electrostatic torques were obtained. Based on theoretical analysis, the adjustment range of the thermal emissivity was obtained for torsional micro-thermal control devices. The results showed that the properties meet the requirements for the control of space thermal emissivity.

14131 Background: Gastric cancer is often diagnosed in locally advanced or metastatic stages and prognostic is particularly bad. Results of a Phase II study of oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and folinic acid was previously published (Louvet et al, J Clin Oncol. 20:4543–8, 2002). Grade 3 peripheral neuropathy occurred in 21% of patients (oxaliplatin-specific scale). Seven patients withdrew because of treatment-related toxicity. For these patients, tolerance of chemotherapy must be considered. Ca/Mg infusions seem to reduce incidence and intensity of acute oxaliplatin-induced symptoms and might delay cumulative neuropathy (Gamelin et al, Clin Cancer Res 15: 4055–61, 2004). Methods: In this study, in our medical Oncology department, we treated a first group of patients with FOLFOX 4 and a second group with FOLFOX S (FOLFOX S: LV5FU2 Simplified (Folonic acid 200 mg/m2, 2h, 5FU 400 mg/m2,bolus, 5FU infusion 1200 mg/m2, 44h) + oxaliplatin: 85 mg/m2, 2h, d1-d15) combined with infusions of Ca gluconate and Mg sulfate (1 g) before and after oxaliplatin and then we evaluated efficacy and toxicity. Results: Of the seventeen patients with advanced and/or metastatic stomach carcinoma enrolled between August 2000 and December 2004: Median age was 59 range (26;73) years, 12 were male, 5 female with a WHO performance status (PS) <3. There were 7 patients with objective response. Of the 13 evaluable patients for neurotoxicity, 6 were treated with FOLFOX 4 and 7 with FOLFOX S combined with Ca/Mg infusions. Neurotoxicity gr II was noted for 3/6 patients of the FOLFOX 4 group but for 1/7 patients also treated with Ca/Mg infusions. No grade 3/4 leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia were observed. Conclusions: This oxaliplatin-containing regimen is effective in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. This regimen combining FOLFOX and Ca/Mg infusions seems to have a more favourable toxicity profile. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract:
Micro channel heat exchangers (MCHX) can be broadly classified as fluidic devices that employ channels of hydraulic diameter smaller than 1 mm. The present study focused on validate the better configuration parameters of louver fin used in MCHX for apply in residential air-conditioner condenser. The study has considered for three different louver angle case, two different louver lengths for better louver angle case and finally two different louver pitches for better louver angle and louver length case. The study indicates that the pressure drop will depends upon the louver angle and pitch. The louver angle i.e. 25deg provides reasonable pressure drop and high heat transfer rate. Thus by changing the length of louver can increase the pressure drop in MCHX. The case ie., 1.2mm louver length have more heat transfer rate. But when comparing to 1mm louver length case Net Heat Transfer rate is high. So the study further continued by having the louver length 1mm and changing the louver pitch. The louver pitch 0.8 and 1.2 has only considered for the study. The length of louver can decrease the pressure drop in MCHX. The variation of net heat transfer rate to changing the louver pitch indicating the importance of number of louver present in the MCHX. Thus the present study indicates the importance of configuration parameters for MCHX. The study also indicates that the increasing the louver length and angle will increase the net heat transfer rate. While increasing the louver pitch is inversely proportional to the net heat transfer rate of MCHX.

Abstract:
14028 Background: Prognosis of inoperable PBCa is poor. Large randomized studies in pancreatic cancer showed a better survival in patients (pts) with locally advanced (LA) in comparison with metastatic disease. Data on radiochemotherapy are scarce in pts with LA disease. Therefore, we performed this multicenter, phase I study on the combination of radiotherapy and Gem/Ox. This regimen showed superior activity to Gem alone in pancreatic cancer (Louvet C et al. JCO 2005;23:3509–16.) Methods: After signed informed consent, pts with LA pancreatic cancer (n = 14) or biliary tract cancer (n=1) were included. They received two cycles of Gem/Ox1 followed by 5 weeks of RT (25 fractions of 1.8 Gy up to a total dose of 45 Gy) in combination with a weekly fixed dose of Gem (300 mg/m2 in 30’) and an escalating weekly dose of Ox (levels: 40/50/60 mg/m2). NCI-CTC 2.0 was used weekly to score treatment-related toxicity in all pts. Results: Today, 15 pts. with a median age of 61 y (range: 44–74), median Karnofsky performance score 90 (range: 70–100) and M/F = 8/7 were included. Upto 60 mg/m2 Ox, no disease limiting toxicity (DLT) occured. Grade 3 toxicity included nausea (n = 1), neutropenia (n = 3) and thrombocytopenia (n = 1). This latter patient was treated with 40 mg/m2 Ox and subsequently also experienced a grade 4. One patient receiving 50 mg/m2 Ox developed a grade 4 thrombocytopenia. Most frequent grade 1/2 toxicity was nausea (n = 8, 53%), thrombocytopenia (n = 5, 33%) and diarrhea (n = 5, 30%). Fourteen out of 15 received the full course of radiotherapy. Median time to progression (TTP) is 6.7 months (95% CI: 3.7–13.5). Thirteen out of 15 pts. are still alive. Conclusions: Combination of radiotherapy and Gemcitabin/Oxaliplatin in pts with LA pancreaticobiliairy cancer is feasible and well-tolerated. The long TTP underlines the potential activity of this regimen. As no DLT has been reached, we will use a dose of 60 mg/m2 Ox for further evaluation. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
Numerical study using ANSYS Fluent is conducted to investigate the effects of louver angle on pressure drop and heat transfer of a heat exchanger. Flow simulations are conducted on 3D modeling of multi stacks louvered fins at three different parameters of louver angles which are 22.0o, 25.5o and 29.0o with Reynolds number ranging from 200 to 1000. These Reynolds numbers are based on louver pitch and fin pitch. The flow temperature is set at 300K which is the room temperature, while temperature of louver fin is set at 400K. The results show that Reynolds number based on fin pitch 2.02 mm and louver angle of 22.0o generate higher performance of heat exchanger compared to louver pitch of 1.40 mm and the other louver angles. Therefore, configuration of Reynolds number based on fin pitch 2.02 mm and louver angle 22.0o is preferred to be adopted in the design process of heat exchanger.

Heat transfer and fluid flow on the air side for heat exchanger in the air conditioning system are numerically simulated by FLUENT commercial software. Numerical analysis is conducted on the plate louver fin, the sinusoid louver fin and the leaf louver fin when the inlet velocity rang is from 2m/s to 7m/s. Heat transfer factor and friction coefficient are respectively fitted with the Reynolds number by the correlation. The sinusoid louver fin is found to have the best comprehensive heat transfer performance. Not only the leaf louver fin’s comprehensive heat transfer performance is good, but also its pressure drop loss is 28.1%~38.8% lower than that of plate louver fin

Intense sound levels produced by engineering equipment have become an acute issue. As most of engineering equipment require air supply, exhaust and good ventilation, it is not possible to control the noise by covering them with tight hoods. Louver with blades covered with acoustic materials and gaps that enable free circu- lation of air are used to this end. Three louver configurations were tested in the semi-anechoic chamber: bare metal louver blades, louver with blades covered with 20-mm-thick polystyrene foam slabs on both sides, and louver with blades covered with 15-mm-thick glass wool slab. According to the test results, louver with blades covered with glass wool slab demonstrated the best noise attenuation characteristics. The reduction of equiv- alent sound pressure level subject to blade inclination angle was from 10.8 to 12.5 dB. Sound pressure level reduction by louver with blades covered with poly- styrene foam slabs was weaker: the reduction of equivalent sound pressure level was from 5.4 to 8.4 dB. Louver with blades not covered with any acoustic material demonstrated the least noise attenuation result from 1.9 to 3.9 dB

Abstract:
A simple method has been developed to predict the flow division at the louver, based on the experimental finding of Shepherd et al. (2007) that the specific energy of the flow through a diversion structure housing a louver system is approximately constant. Flow through louver slot is expressed using a consolidated contraction coefficient to account for the lumped effect of flow contraction between the louver slats and the approximations of the proposed theoretical model (e.g., constant specific energy, flow direction through the louver slots). A relationship is developed for the consolidated coefficient from the simulation of experimental results obtained from Shepherd et al. (2007). It is observed from the simulation results that the consolidated contraction coefficient is best correlated with the relative width of the bypass. Finally, the use of this simple method is demonstrated using a set of numerical experiments within the range of experimental conditions of the louver system.

Abstract:
The heat transfer enhancement is recycled in many engineering uses such as heat exchangers, refrigeration and air conditioning structures, chemical apparatuses, and automobile radiators. Hence many enhancing extended fin patterns are developed and used. In multi louvered fin, in this segment for multi-row fin and tube heat exchanger, an increase in heat transfer enhancement is found 58% for ReH = 350. When the Reynolds number is 1075, the temperature gradient is more distinct for greater louver angle that is the higher heat transfer enhanced for large louver angle. For variable louver angle heat exchanger, the maximum heat transfer improvement achieved by 118% Reynolds number at 1075. In the vortex generator for the delta winglet vortex generator, the extreme enhancement of heat transfer increased to 16% compared to the baseline geometry (at ReDh = 600). For a compact louvered heat exchanger, the results showed that a regular arrangement of louvered fins gives a 9.3% heat transfer improvement. In multi-region louver fins and flat tubes heat exchanger, the louver fin with 4 regions and the louver fin with 6 regions are far better than the conventional fin in overall performance. At the same time, the louver fin with 6 regions is also better than the louver fin with 4-region. The available work is in experimental form as well as numerical form performed by computational fluid dynamics.

Abstract:
The aim of the research presented in this paper is to investigate the feasibility of generating 3D features in sheet metal blanks using laser forming techniques. Aiming for systematic process planning and a good process control capability, only the temperature gradient mechanism is considered for this purpose. The research has been performed on a 6 kW CO2 laser CNC platform. In a first part, bending along curved lines and bending close to edges are investigated. In a second part, these findings are applied for the creation of a louver. A dimensional measurement system is used for analyzing the geometric dimensional characteristics of the formed shapes. It is found that louvers can be made as a local 3D feature in a sheet metal blank. Based on these initial results, it can be concluded that form features, which are traditionally generated by means of form tools on a punching machine, can to some extend also be obtained by means of industrial lasers, widening the application range of these machine tools.

Abstract:
Abstract Two-dimensional numerical investigations of the fluid flow and heat transfer have been carried out for the laminar flow of the louvered fin-plate heat exchanger, designed to work as an air-source heat pump evaporator. The transferred heat and the pressure drop predicted by simulation have been compared with the corresponding experimental data taken from the literature. Two dimensional analyses of the louvered fins with varying geometry have been conducted. Simulations have been performed for different geometries with varying louver pitch, louver angle and different louver blade number. Constant inlet air temperature and varying velocity ranging from 2 to 8 m/s was assumed in the numerical experiments. The air-side performance is evaluated by calculating the temperature and the pressure drop ratio. Efficiency curves are obtained that can be used to select optimum louver geometry for the selected inlet parameters. A total of 363 different cases of various fin geometry for 7 different air velocities were investigated. The maximum heat transfer improvement interpreted in terms of the maximum efficiency has been obtained for the louver angle of 16 ° and the louver pitch of 1.35 mm. The presented results indicate that varying louver geometry might be a convenient way of enhancing performance of heat exchangers.

Eur J Endocrinol 1996;135:328–34. ISSN 0804–4643 The aim of this study was to determine those hormonal alterations in the gonadotropin-ovarian axis that are related to eating behavior in oligomenorrheic patients. We studied 74 oligomenorrheic women aged 26.2 ± 0.8 years, divided into group IA (N = 13) with eating disorders, group IB (N = 61) without eating disorders and 18 normally cycling controls aged 29.2 ± 1.6 years (group II). No subject had ovarian failure, pituitary disease, thyroid dysfunction or was taking any drug. Blood samples were taken on days 3–6 after the last menses. Luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured in two plasma pools, each made up of three samples taken at 30-min intervals, starting at 15.00 h (LH-1 5 h) and 09.00 h (LH-9 h), which allowed the mean LH (mLH) and variability in LH (V-LH: percentage increase from the lower to the higher of the two LH values) to be calculated. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), sex steroids, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone-stimulated LH (sLH) and -FSH (sFSH) were also evaluated. Eating behavior was evaluated with the EAT questionnaire; the EAT 26 score, the dieting score (DS) and bulimia score (BS) were calculated. Dietary intake was evaluated in 35 group IB patients based on food diaries analyzed with the REGAL program, to evaluate daily calorie intake (Cal) and calories provided by carbohydrates (Carb), lipids (Lip) and proteins (Prot). Comparisons between groups were done by analysis of variance (followed by the Fisher PLSD test) and the KruskalWallis test. Groups IA. IB and II did not differ regarding age, body mass index, LH-9 h, LH-15 h, mLH, FSH, sLH, sFSH, estradiol or dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate; group IA had a higher V-LH than group II (p < 0.02) and a higher testosterone level than groups IB and II (p < 0.05). Positive correlations were found between V-LH and DS (p < 0.01) and BS (p < 0.05), and between testosterone and BS (p < 0.02) and DS (p < 0.05). The V-LH was negatively correlated with Cal and Carb, and testosterone was positively correlated with Cal and Lip. In patients referred for oligomenorrhea, it is concluded that testosterone levels and variability of LH levels are related to eating behavior.
