Pearson, James. "The competitive strength of Asian network airlines in competing with low-cost carriers and the use of low-cost subsidiaries." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/21847.

Full text
Abstract:
While 3.3 billion people flew worldwide in 2014 a large number of these were from developed countries. It is emerging countries which offer the greatest potential for future air traffic growth, with forecasts suggesting that 7.3 billion people will fly by 2034. The greatest proportion of this traffic will be in the Asia-Pacific region where there is already high low-cost carrier penetration. Given increasing price-based competition within short-haul markets, there are many significant challenges in terms of how Asian network airlines respond to LCC competition, and a popular response is the use of low-cost subsidiaries. Thus, the aims of this research are to establish the sources of competitive advantage of Asian airlines generally, and to examine the competitive responses of Asian network airlines and the strategic capabilities of them in competing with low-cost carriers, with a particular focus upon the use of low-cost subsidiaries. This research is underpinned with competitive advantage theory, particularly the resource-based view which concerns the internal environment of firms where each firm possesses a collection of unique resources and capabilities that provide the foundation for competitive strategy. For this research, data were collected from 49 senior airline management personnel using questionnaire surveys, resource surveys, and semi-structured interviews. The data were then analysed using VRIN analysis, the importance and difficulty of 37 competitive responses, strategic capability analysis, and the product and organisational architecture model. The results found that both a strong strategy and stable leadership are crucial. The strategies of Asian network airlines must be flexible to respond appropriately to competitive threats as they materialise, with this responsiveness contributing to the attainment of competitive advantage. Out of an analysed 36 intangible resources, the top resources for competitive advantage and responding to competitive threats for Asian airlines generally are slots, brand, and product and service reputation, with the importance of these based more on being hard to copy than valuable. Each analysed airline business model has a relatively distinct core bundle of intangible resources which explains the internal sources of their competitive advantage. The need for Asian network airlines to strengthen their competitive advantage and their ability to compete is because low-cost carriers impact them in many ways, most notably through a reduction in market share and reduced yields given the key motivation of customers within short-haul markets and economy class is now price and value-for-money. Asian network airlines are most likely to respond to low-cost carriers if they focus upon their core markets, grow their market share, and target the core higher-yielding passengers on which network airlines rely. In such instances, Asian network airlines should respond by focusing more on their brands and meeting the needs of their core targeted market segments. There is a strong positive correlation between profit margin and the strategic capability to compete with low-cost carriers. Yet, Asian network airlines have relatively weak capabilities overall. While Vietnam Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Garuda Indonesia are reasonably well placed to compete, network airlines from Northeast Asia, in particular, must strengthen their capabilities especially as Japan, China, and Taiwan are witnessing fast low-cost carrier growth. However, the possession of a strong capability does not mean it is fully or properly leveraged. To compete more effectively with low-cost carriers, the most important competitive responses, based upon analysis of 37 responses, are the ability of management to quickly introduce changes, leveraging brand strength, and increasing aircraft utilisation. Based on the relationship between the importance and difficulty of responses, the most crucial responses for competitive advantage of Asian network airlines are reducing costs to within 30% of LCCs and increasing aircraft utilisation. If achieved, these should lead to meaningful sustained advantage. Low-cost subsidiaries are easier to implement than for network airlines to significantly reduce costs, change to one fleet, or reduce the use of direct distribution, which may explain their popularity within Asia and them being a borderline very essential competitive response. For network airlines, low-cost subsidiaries are a more effective way to compete with low-cost carriers, to participate in the growth of the budget segment, a means of operating uneconomic routes, and to remove unprofitable customers. Network airlines can then focus upon their core market segments and their core competencies. However, their creation is reactive and not proactive which undermines their effectiveness, likewise that low-cost subsidiaries suffer from poor profitability, higher costs, and much smaller size and scale than their key low-cost competitors. This research recommends that Asian network airlines strengthen their existing and primary sources of competitive advantage while pursuing new sources of advantage. While the strategic capabilities of Asian network airlines have strengthened over time, it is essential that they are further strengthened and fully acted upon given increasing competitiveness. The use of low-cost subsidiaries will continue, but it is crucial for themselves and their parent network airlines that they improve their ability to compete and thereby their performance.

Potgieter, Diane. "Competitive strategies and entry strategies of low cost airline incumbent 1time Airline." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007606.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation reports on the factors that contributed to the successful entry strategy of 1time Airline, a low cost carrier, into the South African airline industry as well as its competitive strategies within this context. Research interviews were conducted in November 2005 and research material gathered until end January 2006. Key issues include an evaluation of 1time's business model in relation to other low cost entrants as well as against material sourced through interviews with 1time Airline management, employees and consumers of the airline's product. Porter's Generic Strategies and Five Forces model are used as a framework in evaluating the airline. It is found that Nohria, Joyce and Robertson's "4+2 Formula" is effectively implemented at the airline, but that further implementation of Game Theory in terms of alliances should be investigated for continued success and sustainability.

Abstract:

After the deregulation of the airline industry new actors entered the market and among them were the low-cost airlines. These actors are not involved in the same traditional airline alliance used by the traditional airlines to strengthen their position on the market.

Little research has been made regarding the benefits for low-cost airlines to engage in strategic alliances. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate if low-cost airlines benefit from engaging in strategic alliances or collaborations, and identify possible alliance configurations.

To fulfill the purpose we have used a qualitative method and case studies. Interviews with respondents from two low-cost airlines as well as an airline industry field expert were used to gather information about the thesis subject.

We have concluded that the low-cost airlines in this study benefit from engaging in strategic alliances. The low-cost airlines are using vertical as well as horizontal alliances principally to gain cost-reduction or efficiency benefits. Both cases were against traditional airline alliances due to the high costs involved, and the fact that they do not share the same motives for alliances.

Barnes, Jonavan. "Measuring service quality in the low-cost airline industry." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/24938.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the end of World War II, the service sector has expanded to encompass over 80% of the economy of most developed nations. This places an immense importance on the ability to accurately measure service outputs. However, the most precise method of measuring these outputs is still unclear. This thesis examines Service Quality as a measurement of service outputs, and tests this within an industry-specific context: the low-cost sector of the UK airline industry. This is an industry that has been facing serious challenges since market liberalisation began in 1976. This thesis recognises that offering superior quality may allow airlines to gain a competitive advantage; despite this, there is still no preferred method of measuring Service Quality in this specific context. This PhD therefore examines three methods of Service Quality measurement in the context of the low-cost sector of the UK airline industry: a qualitative method (content analysis), a quantitative survey approach (HiQUAL) and an indexing approach (ALSI). The first study provides an in-depth analysis of the determinants of airline quality through a content analysis study. The second study uses a neglected measurement of Service Quality (HiQUAL) to take a quantitative measurement of Service Quality in the low-cost airline industry. The third study uses measurement (ALSI), an indexing approach, to provide an indication of airline quality. The results of this PhD define the determinants of Service Quality in the low-cost airline industry and confirm the hierarchical nature of Service Quality. This PhD also develops a novel objective metric that represents a shift in ontology from subjective to objective measurements of Service Quality.

Abstract:

We chose our topic, regarding the possibility to get a low-cost airline operating at Karlstad airport, because it is an interesting question whether the region could benefit from a low cost airline or not as well as the existence of the airport. And lately the airport has been discussed in media.

The idea to our purpose arose after having read the report by Wermland Chamber of Commerce regarding the importance of flight connections to and from Karlstad airport, for the region. In this report it appeared that it was desirable with a low-cost airline at Karlstad airport.

This topic is presented by applying theories about an interested party model, risk, agency theory, decision making and growth. All these areas are somehow connected.

We interviewed persons in managing positions at Göteborg/Säve, Stockholm/Skavsta, Jönköping/Axamo and Smaland/Växjö airport, who gave information about the actual situation at their airport respectively. The first two airports have operating low-cost airlines and the last two have not. We also interview partners in Värmland to get their view of the situation at Karlstad airport. The questions were roughly the same, with a difference made if they belonged to the group that has a low-cost airline or if they belonged to the group without a low-cost airline.

We found that there are similarities between the airports. And it turned out that having a low-cost airline operating at an airport is a costly business for the airport, but it seems to be advantageous for the region. And that the risk ought to be diversified between more than one interested parties. In order to be successful you have to make sacrifices and lighten up all parties’ attitudes to risk.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the determinants of air route profitability in the European Union and the cooperating countries of Norway and Switzerland. Building on the assumption that only profitable routes are served, I develop a set of probit models that specify route service as a function of route characteristics, airline networks' attributes, airline partnerships and competition. Estimation results show that route profitability increases with population size and decreases with flight distance and the time efficiency of car travel relative to air travel. An airline's airport presence, that is, its share of airport operations, exerts a significant, positive effect on its route profitability, and so does airport presence of its group or allied partners. Competitive effects are asymmetric across airline business types. This paper's contribution to existing airline-route profitability studies lies in accounting for airline cooperation, controlling for an alternative mode of transport, and using EU data for estimation.

Abstract:
While Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) are prevalent and mature in Europe and North America, the business model of LCCs has only recently started to take hold in Asia, and in recent years, more and more airlines would like to operate the LCC model on Asian region routes. The research examines whether or not LCCs are suitable for operation in Taiwan, as well as developing airline strategies in respond to some recent changes in airline market and political conditions in the country. Firstly, the research illustrates not only the current regulation and marketing situations between Taiwan and other Asian countries, but also reviews the historical data of passenger numbers and load factors of the main airlines since the year 2000. Secondly, the research surveys the views of three different interviewees, CAA Taiwan, airline executives, and passengers to analyse what they expect from an LCC. Thirdly, in order to maximise an LCC's efficiency, the research establishes a yield management system for LCCs and uses it for modifying the operation and precisely calculating operating cost. In addition, it also studies the successful and failed cases in Europe and the U. S. to understand the key points to success in a competitive market. Although the current environment in Taiwan may not be ideally suitable for LCC development, Taiwanese airlines are still able to learn how to reduce costs and improve their sales model from the experience of the LCC revolution. Moreover, the air link between Taiwan and China is likely to be a significant potential market in the future

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the changes to marketing strategy of airline companies in Europe due the proliferation of low-cost carriers in Europe. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the theoretical part the marketing strategy framework is established by reviewing the latest literature on marketing theory and its application to the airline industry. The second chapter provides the historical background and shows the specifics of the airline industry in order to determine when the proliferation of low-cost carriers in Europe occurred. It also analyzes the impact the proliferation had on the business operations of the network carriers by looking at the changes to different elements of the marketing mix. Finally the third chapter summarizes the authors research on consumer behavior in the airline industry. The research was conducted through a quantitative questionnaire and it investigates consumers perception of price and brand awareness.

The Facebook has been growing continuously, with a significant increase in the number of users, whether companies or individuals. It has become increasingly important for companies to be present in this environment and therefore to create a lasting connection with their consumers. Consumers are increasingly paying close attention to what is posted on Facebook business pages, especially to other consumer's experiences. Considering the aviation sector, there is an increasing focus on the use of social networks to promote offers and promotions, to lead to a greater purchase of travel. Consumers turn to Facebook to search content shared by those who have taken the same trip, viewing comments, photos, videos, and more. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand if the information present on Facebook pages of low-cost airlines has influence in the intention to purchase trips of those companies. For that, a study was carried out through an online survey, in order to find out which factors have an impact on the intention to buy online and whether this impact is positive or negative, and what is the relationship between those factors. It was concluded that the factors enjoyment and the use of Facebook for information search have no influence on the online purchase of travelling tickets. The factor risk has a negative impact on the purchase of online travel.

Abstract:
The inception of the low-cost carrier (LCC) into the UK in the early 1990s revolutionised passenger aviation. The now saturated short-haul market finds airlines increasingly manipulative of their business model, seeking to further differentiate their product offering from their rivals. With an abundance of airlines to choose from, the consumer is faced with what at times can be a complex decision-making process as to which airline to fly with. This research seeks through empirical research to identify key characteristics and attitudes of airline passengers (with particular emphasis upon LCCs) and the implications for pre-trip decision-making and airline choice. The study begins with an overview of the airline business models that dominate the UK passenger aviation sector, before introducing Birmingham Airport (BHX) as a case study airport on which part of the main findings of this research are based. A detailed literature review then seeks to offer insight to attitude formation and the decision-making process that facilitates behaviour, before examining the implications for airline choice. The fieldwork was undertaken in two stages with passenger decision-making explored through structured-interviews conducted with passengers in the airside departure lounges at BHX (n = 490). In addition, the attitudes of airline passengers were explored using an online attitudinal survey, distributed internationally to a self-selected sample (n = 307). The quantitative analysis of both strands of research suggests key differences exist in the decision-making processes and research methods employed by passengers’ of airlines operating different business models, but particularly for passengers of LCCs. Both socio-demographic and situational factors are identified as influential in decision-making and choice processes. Attitudes, based upon actual experience and social representation are also considered significant. The findings present a classification of airline passengers based upon the primary research and suggest further quantitative research should explore decision-making over time and in different situational contexts.

Abstract:
Passengers rank safety as a key factor in airline choice. Thus, safety performance impacts an airline's ability to attract customers. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship and difference between airline category low-cost carriers (LCCs) and full-service carriers (FSCs), geographical region, and safety performance measured by accident rates. The target population comprised all airlines in all countries that had an accident during the 14-year period 2004 to 2017. Data consisted of archival data of all global airline accidents and airline departure frequencies for the 14-year period. The theory of organizational accidents in complex sociotechnical systems explains the relationship between LCC and FSC safety performance, as well as between global geographical regions. The Swiss cheese model of organizational accidents theoretical framework remains a relevant model to examine airline accidents and improve airline safety. Data analysis consisted of the t test, ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. LCCs were found to be as safe as FSCs on a global level, and safer than FSCs in some regions. There were regional differences in safety, with North America being safer than Africa. The implications for positive social change include the potential for airline leaders to improve the safety image of their airline and provide passengers a better understanding of airline safety. Providing passengers with information on airline safety performance allows passengers to make informed choices on using different categories of airlines in different geographical regions. The research may result in new travel opportunities for travelers that were previously unrealized due to safety concerns, particularly around the increased use of LCCs.

Abstract:

Fundamental analysts use basic fundamentals, which generally based on available public information, to determine a firm’s intrinsic value. Forecasting future performance is one of the key elements for doing fundamental analysis, and historical results are the foundation for future forecast.

The analysis of this study is conducted into two sections with case studies in the airline business. Firstly, financial ratios are analyzed to examine whether low-cost or traditional airlines better perform their operations during a certain period. The other section is undertaking fundamental analysis of the case studies to evaluate current stock prices of representative airlines based on the potential future forecast. The model using for this valuation is the Residual Earnings Model. Key assumptions of future forecasts are mainly based on their historical ratios. Other related factor such as the gross domestic product (GDP) is included in forecasting sales growth rate because it is one of the key influences in the airline business.

For ratio analysis, the findings suggest that low-cost airlines perform better operations based on five years average. However, the traditional airlines improve their performances significantly in the latest fiscal year. For equity valuation, the findings show that estimates of equity values of the airlines yield inconsistent results comparing to their stock prices. Possible reasons of the difference might be the improvement in key financial ratios of the airlines.

Ferrer, Rosell Berta. "Tourism demand in Spain: trip duration and budget structure, a comparison of low cost and legacy airline users." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/145438.

Abstract:
This thesis compares the behaviour of tourists arriving to Spain by low cost airlines or by legacy airlines, in terms of length of stay and travel budget allocation. It also segments low cost users according to travel budget composition (share allocated to transportation expenses, and to at-destination expenses, both basic –accommodation and food– and discretionary –activities and shopping). Length of stay is analyzed with an ordered logit model to account for multimodality. For expenditure composition analysis, the compositional data analysis methodology is used. Both approaches are completely new to tourism research. A relevant and recurrent finding in this thesis are the small differences encountered between the users of both types or airline. The thesis makes original contributions both regarding the variables included and the methods used

In total, three pilots and three flight attendants who work for a low-cost airline and carrier airlines from all over the world were interviewed. The findings show that a differentiation between before the COVID 19 pandemic and during COVID 19 has to be made. Before COVID 19, pilots were almost satisfied with their working conditions whereas flight attendants felt their working conditions could have been improved in terms of better wages. However, during the COVID 19 time, both the flight attendants and pilots are afraid of losing their job. Due to COVID 19, many flights were cancelled which might have an impact on the flight industry in the future. My studies open up possibilities for new research in the future about the transformation of the flight industry after COVID 19.

This thesis tries to prove a functioning of the Blue Ocean Strategy on the case of Europen low-cost air transport. Through the Blue Ocean Strategy´s Analytical Tools and Frameworks, specifically with the help of the Strategy Canvas, the Four Actions Framework and the Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid, it is proven that the strategy introduced by the airline Ryanair in the nineties of the twentieth century corresponds to the Blue Ocean Strategy. Through the same Analytical Tools and Frameworks and a comparison of business models of three low-cost airlines also the time validity of the Blue Ocean Strategy is proven in this case. The functioning of the Blue Ocean Strategy on the case of European low-cost air transport was verified.

Abstract:
According to the final work project of the Master of Finance, this Equity Research aims at the detailed evaluation of the company Ryanair Holdings Plc, according to the recommendations of the CFA Institute. Initially I decided to study an aviation industry company since it is an industry that appeals to me and I would like to know how it is organized. That said, I have chosen Ryanair because despite being a European airline company, it is pioneering to operate at ultra-low fares offering more than 2000 short-haul flights a day, serving more than 200 airports across Europe. This report contemplates only the information made available until October 26, 2018. Any information or events after this date have not been considered. The target price was calculated using the absolute valuation method, the discounted cash flow method (DCF), and was supplemented by the relative valuation method and the comparable multiples method. It is expected that at the end of 2019 the target price will be €10.18, representing a potential downside of 17.07% against the current price of €12.27. Thus, based on the analysis conducted on Ryanair Holding Plc, our final recommendation is to SELL.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Transportation)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 123).
The purpose of this thesis is to assess the potential for low-cost airlines in Asia. Low-cost airlines have been very successful in North America and Europe and have significantly impacted the airline industry and its stakeholders. In what ways and to what extent this might be repeatable in Asia is the underlying question of this thesis. An investigation of the low-cost airline business model reveals that there are a number of key elements that make it so successful on both sides of the Atlantic. But what works in North America and Europe may not be feasible in Asia. An analysis of the Asian airline industry shows that it differs from the rest of the world in several important dimensions, which will substantially affect prospective low-cost airlines. On the one hand, the rigid regulatory frameworks in most parts of Asia and the fact that many traditional Asian airlines have some of the world's lowest unit costs may not allow Asian low-cost airlines to thrive in the same way as they have in other parts of the world. On the other hand, a breakdown of Asia's socioeconomic indicators shows that the continent is bound to experience significant growth in intra-Asia air travel over the coming years. The low-cost airline business in Asia is therefore challenging in several ways but potentially very lucrative. The possible impacts that an increasing presence of low-cost airlines in Asia would have on the various stakeholders in the region are substantial. While some of these stakeholders will likely benefit from a growing presence of low-cost airlines in Asia, others might have a lot to lose. This thesis analyses several stakeholder groups and suggests potential response options.

Full text
Abstract:
Representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that passenger complaints filed for the first quarter of 2015 were up 14.4% over the same period of the previous year. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies for mitigating low-cost airlines' passenger complaints. Porter's generic strategies provided the conceptual framework for this research study. Data were collected from 3 ground service managers employed by a low-cost airline in Florida using semistructured interview questions, direct observation, field notes, and review of the airline's website and public documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Member checking and methodological triangulation were used to ensure data saturation. Inductive line-by-line analysis of participant interviews and review of documents and website to identify similar words and phrases resulted in the emergence of 5 themes: complaints, training, customer retention, policies and procedures, and low-cost strategies. The implication for social change exists because airline managers can apply insights gained from this study to mitigate passenger complaints, thereby increasing the number of customers, lowering fares, and maintaining profitability. In this way, the study may support the creation of additional jobs for airlines as well as other industries providing services to an expanded workforce necessary to accommodate more passengers. Further, in supporting better performance for low-cost carriers, this study may help these businesses to offer low fares to customers previously unable to afford travel, enabling them to visit new places and gain a better understanding of other cultures.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The emergence of low cost airlines (LCAs) has attracted attention from passengers, competitors, the public, and researchers alike. It seems prodigious that LCAs prosper in today's time of economic downturn and are therefore able to counter the industry's trend. lATA's member airlines have accumulated losses of $31 billion since the beginning of the new millennium. Furthermore, industry icons such as American Airlines and British Airways are fighting for survival while some, namely Air Canada, are on the edge of bankruptcy: a fate which others, like Sabena, have not been able to escape. However, the low cost business model has triumphantly entered the aviation market since the deregulation of the markets in the U.S. in 1978. Low cost airlines like Southwest Airlines and Ryanair not only achieve double-digit profit margins, but also have the highest market capitalisation of the industry. This thesis examines the reason for the success of LCAs in the U.S. and EU. LCAs operate with a much lower cost base than most carriers, especially the major hut-and-spoke (H&S) airlines. The low cost business model aims at increasing both aircraft and staff productivity. It also simplifies the sequence of operations workflow and pricing structure. The thesis gives special consideration to the cost structure of LCAs. The advantages of LCAs lie within the areas such as labour, seat density, and distribution. The second objective of this thesis is to evaluate the development of LCAs and consider the implications for the European transport industry. Whereas American LCAs have operated for more than twenty-five years, the boom of their European counterparts did not commence until the end of the 1990s. Ryanair and easyJet have growth rates of more than thirty percent. The author agrees with the expectations of aviation experts that LCAs will grow until they serve approximately a quarter of the market; hence, the business model of low cost is sustainable. However, only three to four low cost airlines will survive the fierce competition in Europe.

Ryanair Holdings plc (Ryanair Holdings) is a holding company of Ryanair Limited. It is a passenger transport airline which has an ultra-low-price strategy coupled with a standard reduced quality service, where extra services are paid by the consumer. These nominated ancillary services are divided into non-flight, Internet-related and in-flight, which include the sale of beverages, food and goods. Additionally, it markets accommodation and travel insurance services through its website and even provides its own baggage services at Dublin airport. It serves short-haul routes ("point-to-point") between Ireland, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Morocco and Israel. In June 2017, Ryanair had a main fleet of more than 360 Boeing 737-800 aircraft and offered more than 2,000 regular short-haul flights per day, serving approximately 200 airports throughout Europe. The main goal of this Equity Research project is to determine Ryanair's stock intrinsic value through a detailed analysis of the company performance in the last couple of years and also through the most accurate prospecting of the market. The valuation of the company was based on the Free Cash Flows to the Firm and the WACC methodology which was considered the most suitable for the company according to the literature review. In addition, we also performed a Relative Valuation to complement our analysis.

Abstract:

Nowadays, the European airline market is characterized by two major different airline business models; the full service airlines and the low cost airlines. Secondary, appeared for the first time in 1985 in form of the Irish low cost carrier Ryanair. In recent days, the European low cost market stands out through its growth potential and high competitiveness. Therefore, startup companies aiming to join the wave of success as well as insolvency of newly established airlines are part of the daily occurrence. The challenge, that established low cost airlines are faced with, is to create competitive advantages against new entrants and direct competitors under the circumstances of environmental changes. In addition to the described problem a model was developed in order to picture the situation. This paper aims to provide an answer to the specific question: How do low cost airlines use relationship marketing in order to enhance, maintain and attract new customers? The second step is to figure out how those tools affect the airlines generic strategy. The purpose of this study is to find out how low cost airlines in Europe deal with tools of relationship marketing and what are the effects those tools have on generic strategies. This thesis is based on a case study within the European low cost airlines market, with a special focus on three airlines: Ryanair, EasyJet and Air Berlin. These questions are addressed using information obtained in interviews with respondents from the airlines that were recently conducted in Brussels and Bremen by personal interviews and additionally by telephone interviews and email contact. The results show that relationship marketing tools are used in a different extent by the airlines. The authors could not find evidence that using relationship marketing tools is the single solution to compete more successfully than without. It is further argued by the authors that RM is just one aspect strengthening the generic strategy in order to gain sustainable competitive advantage.

Low-cost carriers (LCCs) are an increasingly important part of the global air transportation industry. Due to the short-haul strategy, LCCs are more difficult on long-haul market and hard to achieve economies of density. However, the ability of LCCs to stimulate demand is running out, and many markets seem to be at or near the saturation point. To differentiate themselves from other LCCs, some low-cost operators are adopting different business models that include entering alliance (JetBlue and Aer Lingus, Air Asia and Jetstar). One current trend is that while international alliances among major airlines continue, some low-cost airlines have formed and some are now preparing for low-cost airline alliances. Since LCC alliance is in the initial stage, few researches have been paid to the operational strategies for LCC alliance. Therefore, how to determine the airline flight frequencies is very important for LCC alliance. This study develops an airline network modeling and interactive programming responsive to LCCs code-share alliances, to determine the operational strategies in airline network design, airline flight frequencies and airfare. Consider bargaining interactions by international code-share alliances agreements and competitive interactions by LCCs alliance with full service carriers (FSCs), this study designs a two-stage interactive algorithm. In the first phase, the bargaining interactions between two partner–LCCs in a LCC alliance negotiation was taken into consideration. In order to determine the LCC alliance networking and the optimization of the individual LCCs, this study formulates the network modeling of pre-alliance and the integrated alliance network, respectively. In the second phase, the competitive interactions between LCC alliance and the other competitor in airlines market was taken into consideration. Through competitve scenario analysis were determined. The optimal operational strategies corresponding to different competitor reactions. A numerical example with an Asian LCC and an Australian LCC were provided to illustrate the results and the application of the proposed models. Moreover, a group of optimal solutions for airline flight frequecies and airfares was determined. An optimal LCCs alliance operational strategy was also determined. The results showed that the parallel code-share alliance makes both sides of LCC members increase profits, reduce operating costs and also increase market shares. On the other hand, the complementary code-share alliance makes them enter long-haul market and extend the network scope. Scenario analyses are also discussed. The results of this study explore the effect of LCC alliances on airfares, allied routes and route frequencies, and the allied network structure. In addition, it is envisaged that the results of this study may shed light on low-cost alliance strategies.

Low-Cost Airline or Budget Airline means some air carriers offer lower price tickets than other competitors in the same market. This business model was originated from U.S.A by the Southwest Airline, and introduced to Europe around 1990s. Although Low-Cost Airline has long history in those area, but it still is obscure Glossary for us. So, this study not only talks about Low-Cost Airline but also analyzes this industry. This dissertation will discuss multi-subject, such as airline industry system, history of the southwest and its management policy, elements of Low-Cost Airline and comparison with traditional airline, history of Low-Cost Airline in Europe and current situation. Low-cost carrier in recent years in the aviation market set off a wave. Some low-cost airlines even threat the conventional airlines in the market, such as Southwest Airlines in the United States, Air Asia in Malaysia. On the other hand, some low-cost carriers went bankruptcy due to poor management, such as Zoom Airlines in Canada, and Oasis Hong Kong Airlines. A natural question arises: which type of business model, low-cost carrier, conventional carrier or chartered carrier, should airline operations adopt, low-cost carrier? This study applies Porter's (1990) ``Diamond`` analysis, together with SWOT analysis, to the aforementioned question. The research identifies the corresponding competitive conditions and strategies for each business model. This gives important implications for the aviation business in Taiwan.

The Southwest Airlines created the low-cost airline business model in 1970s, after aviation liberalization and opening up policies in the U.S. and European, the booming of low-cost airlines. This makes the people who didn’t use aircraft in the past began to take air travel. Many secondary airports in the area caused the travelers a lot of growth by low-cost airlines flight, and promote the region’s tourism, economy and employment opportunities. In view of this, started the study idea of the influence of low-cost carriers on air travel related industry in Taiwan. The Asia’s largest low-cost airline – AirAsia is the subject of this study. Historical data on the low-cost carriers business were collected. Questions for conducting in-depth interviews with experts in air travel industries were devised from the study of these historical data. In addition, a survey of government’s air, tourism data, the influence of low-cost carriers on air travel related industry was developed finally. The results show, the AirAsia to open Taipei route, on the Taoyuan International Airport, retail, hotels and other travel related industries have brought real benefits. The home base of AirAsia is Malaysia, which people came to Taiwan to engage in substantial growth in tourist numbers and to create a substantial growth in tourism foreign exchange earnings. Finally, the results of this study were compared with historical data. It is hope that the results would be able to provide any other countries planning to develop low-cost carriers, some practical reference in planning their air and tourism industries strategies.

With the rapid changes in the global airline market, the original model of low cost carrier has gradually changed. In recent years, ultra low cost carrier have been proven to influence airline markets in a different way from low cost carrier. However, behind the lowest base fares, there are more passenger complaint that need to be resolved. In the past, the research mostly differed from other business models in distinguishing between ultra low cost model, and less on passengers' perception of service quality and attitude toward ultra low cost carrier. Therefore, based on Theory of Reasoned Action, this study explores whether Taiwanese passengers' acceptance of low cost service for ultra low cost carrier has an impact on monetary value and behavioral value, as well as the influence of attitudes toward ultra low cost carrier and subjective norms on purchase intention. And further, we test the correlation between perceived value and attitude. A survey of 216 passengers in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport was carried out, using multivariate analysis.
