In the mid-eighties, the development of radioactive-ion beams enabled the exploration ofregions of the nuclear landscape away from the valley of stability. Close to the neutrondripline, in the light neutron-rich region, halo nuclei were observed. These nuclei exhibit asurprisingly large matter radius and a strongly clusterized structure. These two featurescan be explained by the weak binding of one or two neutrons which allows them to tunnelfar from the rest of the nucleons, surrounding the nucleus by a diffuse halo. These nuclearstructures have challenged the usual description of the nucleus,

The Bethe-Weizsäcker cycle consists of a set of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium and release energy in the stars. It determines the luminosity of low-metal stars at their turn-off from the main-sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram, so its rate enters the calculation of the globular clusters’ age, an independent lower limit on the age of the universe. The cycle contributes less than 1% to our Sun’s luminosity, but it produces neutrinos that can in principle be measured on Earth in underground experiments and bring direct information of the physical conditions in the sol

Where did the elements come from? Why are they found in the abundance that they are? These are two of the fundamental questions that the field of astrophysics has sought to answer. Abstract:
Within this thesis, nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were analyzed which have been performed at the gamma ELBE facility of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the HI gamma S facility of the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. The dipole strength up to the neutron separation energy, its distribution as well as its split into electric and magnetic strength were determined. The influence of crucial nuclear parameters, like deformation and neutron excess, on the data was investigated. For the first time a whole set of enriched gaseous targets was measured in the energy r

Abstract:
Two experiments have been conducted to ascertain if a cell with a palladium cathode, a platinum anode, and a solution of H2SO4 in D2O can produce excess heat under electrolysis compared to a similar cell with H2O. In each experiment, two cells were connected in series with constant current. The two cells were identical except for the fact that the heavy water cell used D2O instead of H2O in the electrolyte. Both cells in each experiment employed Pd cathodes, Pt anodes, and H2SO4 in the solution. On a piece of Pd foil that had been cold-rolled and cleaned like the cathodes but had not been elec

Abstract:
The threshold potentials were determined for the excitation energy necessary for low energy electrons to induce chemical reactions of carbon monoxide, and of nitric oxide adsorbed on a gold surface. The reactions were studied as a function of temperature (100 °C to 200 °C) and pressure (1.83 x 10-5 to 6.40 x 10-4 torr). The electron source was a thorium oxide coated iridium filament which was heated by a current between 1A and 3A to keep thermal distribution of the electrons to less than 0.4 ev. The reaction surface was a polycrystalline evaporated film prepared by subliming gold onto a stainl

Abstract:
This work details the synthesis of low density porous polymers, and characterisation with an emphasis on Time Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR). High energy laser physics utilises low density porous polymers to study astrophysical phenomena at high pressures and temperatures in the form of plasma. Low Z, low density Polymerised High Internal Phase Emulsions (PolyHIPE) and aerogels form a large part of these capabilities, however increasingly stringent laser target parameters are now required to develop new capabilities. For low density porous polymers, this demands greater control ove

Abstract:
In the framework of the exotic clustering in light neutron rich nuclei, an experimental study for the search of 8Li-alpha cluster configurations on 12B was performed. The 8Li-4He elastic scattering excitation function was measured by using the thick target inverse kinematics scattering method implemented by time of flight measurements that allows the elastic channel from the inelastic one discrimination. The 8Li beam was provided by the LNS radioactive beam facility EXCYT at the energy of 30 MeV. The absolute cross-section was measured for CM energy between 13 MeV and 19.5 MeV. The pr
