SUMMARY The rate of occurrence of anomalous ultra-low frequency electromagnetic (ULFEM) pulses has been claimed to have increased days to weeks prior to the M5.4 2007 and M4.0 2010 Alum Rock earthquakes. We re-examine the previously reported ultra-low frequency (ULF: 0.01–10 Hz) magnetic data recorded at a QuakeFinder site located 9 km from the earthquake hypocentre, and compare to data from a nearby Stanford-USGS site located 42 km from the hypocentre, to analyse the characteristics of the pulses and assess their origin. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the major barrier in the process of energy scaling for pulsed single-frequency fiber MOPA. Due to gain saturation effect, the laser pulse profile will be gradually distorted with the increase of pump power, which induces steep leading edge and narrower width for the amplified pulses. The resulting laser peak power would increase rapidly and thus the SBS threshold is reached earlier to limit the amplification of pulse energy.<br>A method to obtain high-energy pulsed single-frequency laser by pulse pre-shaping is demonstrated in this work. This holds when the injection pulse is at low intensity and has a frequency near the pump pulse frequency ω0. This paper discusses the design of low-frequency pulse width modulation for heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) compressors. HVAC units are traditionally controlled using nonlinear control techniques like hysteresis control. Using a very long pulse width, this method can treat an on/off air conditioner or heat pump compressor as a variable input for which traditional linear (or nonlinear) controls can be applied. The key advantage of this method is direct control over the compressor power using tunable saturation. Power control is especially useful when considering load management
