Abstract:
To proactively defend computer systems against cyber-attacks, a honeypot system—purposely designed to be prone to attacks—is commonly used to detect attacks, discover new vulnerabilities, exploits or malware before they actually do real damage to real systems. Its usefulness lies in being able to operate without being identified as a trap by adversaries; otherwise, its values are significantly reduced. A honeypot is commonly classified by the degree of interactions that they provide to the attacker: low, medium and high-interaction honeypots. However, these systems have some shortcomings of their own. First, the low and medium-interaction honeypots can be easily detected due to their limited and simulated functions of a system. Second, the usage of real systems in high-interaction honeypots has a high risk of security being compromised due to its unlimited functions. To address these problems, we developed Asgard an adaptive self-guarded honeypot, which leverages reinforcement learning to learn and record attacker’s tools and behaviour while protecting itself from being deeply compromised. In this paper, we compare Asgard and its variant Midgard with two conventional SSH honeypots: Cowrie and a real Linux system. The goal of the paper is (1) to demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive honeypot that can learn to compromise between collecting attack data and keeping the honeypot safe, and (2) the benefit of coupling of the environment state and the action in reinforcement learning to define the reward function to effectively learn its objectives. The experimental results show that Asgard could collect higher-quality attacker data compared to Cowrie while evading the detection and could also protect the system for as long as it can through blocking or substituting the malicious programs and some other commands, which is the major problem of the high-interaction honeypot.

Abstract:
AbstractEnterprises are striving to remain protected against malware-based cyber-attacks on their infrastructure, facilities, networks and systems. Static analysis is an effective approach to detect the malware, i.e., malicious Portable Executable (PE). It performs an in-depth analysis of PE files without executing, which is highly useful to minimize the risk of malicious PE contaminating the system. Yet, instant detection using static analysis has become very difficult due to the exponential rise in volume and variety of malware. The compelling need of early stage detection of malware-based attacks significantly motivates research inclination towards automated malware detection. The recent machine learning aided malware detection approaches using static analysis are mostly supervised. Supervised malware detection using static analysis requires manual labelling and human feedback; therefore, it is less effective in rapidly evolutionary and dynamic threat space. To this end, we propose a progressive deep unsupervised framework with feature attention block for static analysis-based malware detection (PROUD-MAL). The framework is based on cascading blocks of unsupervised clustering and features attention-based deep neural network. The proposed deep neural network embedded with feature attention block is trained on the pseudo labels. To evaluate the proposed unsupervised framework, we collected a real-time malware dataset by deploying low and high interaction honeypots on an enterprise organizational network. Moreover, endpoint security solution is also deployed on an enterprise organizational network to collect malware samples. After post processing and cleaning, the novel dataset consists of 15,457 PE samples comprising 8775 malicious and 6681 benign ones. The proposed PROUD-MAL framework achieved an accuracy of more than 98.09% with better quantitative performance in standard evaluation parameters on collected dataset and outperformed other conventional machine learning algorithms. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Every computer connected to a wide computer network is vulnerable to the occurrence of data, information, resources and services that exist in the system from actions such as intrusion, wiretapping, theft and misuse of important data to damage to network systems, which are carried out by irresponsible intruders, wiretapping, theft and misuse of important data by individuals, groups, within a company/government agency or private sector, even damage to computer network systems may occur. in a company, which is done by an intruder or attacker who is not responsible. Honeypot honeyd is a method that can be applied, implemented in medium to large scale companies, especially those that have implemented computer-based systems and technology, to prevent, anticipate bad actions before they occur and take quick action when bad impacts occur. Honeypot honeyd with low-interaction, which is to interact indirectly with the attacker, because honeyd positions itself as a bait or a shadow server that is deliberately attacked so that the results of the attack can be known and analyzed. In this research, honeyd honeypot is a shadow server that resembles a real server, which has several services along with ports that are deliberately opened for attack. The results of this research can be seen that there is an infiltration or direct attack, seen from the increase in network traffic above normal on the monitor system, and also can be seen log files from Honeyd in detail what the attackers have done or are currently doing to be analyzed and then take precautions, anticipation, socialization of security in carrying out activities that are directly related to the outside world through the network, improving both servers, network systems and existing services. Thus the honeyd honeypot can help save important data, resources and can improve computer network security systems.

Abstract:
Nowadays, web applications have become most prevailing in the industry, and the critical data of most organizations are stored using web apps. Thus, web applications pose a large target for assorted cyber-attacks. As mitigation for them, among many proposed solutions, web application honeypots are much sophisticated and robust protection. In this paper, we propose a low interaction, adaptive, and dynamic web application honeypot that imitates the vulnerabilities through HTTP events. The honeypot is built with SNARE and TANNER; SNARE devises the attack surface and sends the requests to TANNER, which evaluates them and determines how SNARE should respond to the requests. TANNER is an analysis and classification tool, which analyses and evaluates HTTP requests served by SNARE, and composes a dynamic response by its emulation engine. The honeypot works abreast major complex vulnerabilities, deceiving the attacker by lying under the surface of a real web application.

Abstract:
The high need for information technology that can be accessed anywhere and anytime indirectly opens a big opportunity for irresponsible parties to attack and destroy the system. The server farm is one of the targets most hunted by attackers, intending to damage, and even retrieving victim data. One of the efforts to deal with this problem is to add server security by using honeypot. The existence of a honeypot is one of the efforts to prevent system hacking by creating a fake server to divert attackers access. In its application, the logs generated from the honeypot are only letters and numbers, making it difficult to analyze the logs. It became a problem it will being a lot of log data being processed. To make it easier for administrators in analyzing logs, a visualization system using the ELK Stack is proposed. Honeypot and ELK Stack integration can be a security system solution in detecting attacks while providing visualization to administrators. Five testing schemes were carried out to provide a comparative study between the low interaction honeypot Cowrie and Dionaea. Cowrie delivers a better performance detection system (real-time) compared to the detection system offered by Dionaea, and the average delay time is 3.75 seconds, while ELK managed to provide better monitoring results to administrators through its visualization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The development of network technology, especially networking security system, demands the security system to evolve. Honeyd is honeypot with low interaction type which has smaller risk than high interaction type. It is because the interaction to honeypot does not directly engage with the real system. In this research, honeyd is integrated with iptables implemented to local network by trying several attacks, such as scanning host, DoS, and Ddos. From the result of honeyd log, the gained information data is processed with honeyd-viz and is expected to become an inputand solution to decide the security policy in network and make the system safer. The experiment showed that honeyd was able to detect the attack by Netscan android by doing scanning host in network.
