In this Ph.D. thesis, a novel high-resolution Godunov-type numerical procedure has been developed for solving the unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for constant and variable density flows. The proposed FSAC-PP approach encompasses both artificial compressibility (AC) and fractional step (FS) pressure-projection (PP) methods of Chorin [3, 4] in a unified solution concept. To take advantage of different computational strategies, the FS and AC methods have been coupled (FSAC formulation), and further a PP step has been employed at each pseudo-time step. In the first part of this study, a numerical investigation of the two-dimensional steady flow past cylinders was carried out. A wing with a Wortmann FX-63-137-ESM airfoil section has been used to study some unique problems encountered in wing aerodynamics in the range of Reynolds numbers between 50,000 and 500,000. The wind-tunnel testing conducted in the 6'x 6' Stability tunnel included strain-gauge data, pressure data, and flow-visualization studies. The laminar separation bubble which frequently occurs on the upper surface of the wing is found to dominate its performance and gives rise to a hysteresis loop for lift and drag. Changes in airfoil performance due to positive flap or control surface deflections resembl

Abstract:
The tubercles on the pectoral flippers of humpback whales are thought to give superior manoeuvrability to these marine mammals. Numerical simulation of the flow over hydrofoils with and without leading-edge tubercles were conducted to test the protuberances’ effect on the hydrofoils hydrodynamic performance. Results showed that tubercles provided additional lift for post-stall conditions at low Reynolds number, but only had detrimental effects on the lift and drag generated at high Reynolds number.
