Abstract:
This chapter examines high-frequency trading (HFT), including core groups of strategies and resulting impacts. Using order-by-order market data analysis, the chapter shows that much of what is often construed to be useless noise of order cancellations actually represents meaningful order revisions, part of the real-time market bargaining. The chapter further shows that a small fraction of the order cancellations are a product of purely toxic liquidity. Market participants of different frequencies tend to react differently to such toxic orders, with higher-frequency traders largely ignoring and lower-frequency investors interacting with toxic liquidity.

Abstract:
This book illuminates a comprehensive social system that comprises explicit markets, tort liability, and criminal liability, and describes each of these three institutions as serving the same function in different social and physical circumstances. It defines exchanges as compensated transfers of rights and objects among individuals, and shows that markets, tort, and crime each operate to organize and facilitate, to govern, exchange of a particular kind of right in a particular exchange environment to which its own rules and procedures are well suited. Under perfect conditions, each operates to move rights and objects from lower- to higher-valuing owners by requiring every taker of rights to compensate every loser in full for the costs of the taking. Markets can organize voluntary exchange of property rights only where theft can be deterred, but when rights or objects are stolen, an involuntary transfer is initiated, and markets are incapable of organizing the completion of the involuntary exchange by compensating the victim. This is the role of tort and criminal liability, which complete the involuntary transaction begun by the theft by imposing a compensatory liability price on every offender equal to the costs imposed by the theft. Marginal-cost pricing in markets controls voluntary, lawful cost imposition by distinguishing inefficient from efficient cost imposition and encouraging the latter, and corrective justice in tort and crime, each in an institutional domain determined by the character of the rights being traded, controls involuntary, unlawful cost imposition in the same way.

Abstract:
Epigraphy reveals important aspects of the social life of ordinary people and slaves in the Roman world, habitually overlooked by elite literary authors. Inscriptions dealing with the lower orders might appear to have no overt social filter but are often influenced by the epigraphic culture of the elite. The chapter argues that through public documents, such as the statutes of collegia, the commemoration of benefactions, gravestones, and graffiti, some commoners gain a voice. Inscriptions give scholars a better understanding of life in the countryside and among the urban plebs .

Yamamoto, Eric K. Epilogue. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190878955.003.0011.

Abstract:
The concise Epilogue describes the U.S. Supreme Court’s late-2017 vacation of the courts of appeals rulings in the International Refugee Assistance Project v. Trump and Hawaii v. Trump cases (determining that the litigated controversy over the president’s January and March 2017 exclusionary executive orders was moot). It incorporates Justice Sotomayor’s dissent and notes that the lower court rulings “may be persuasive and cited as guidance, but not as binding precedent.” It observes therefore that the Korematsu conundrum persists at the heart of these and future liberty and security controversies: careful judicial scrutiny or near unconditional deference, judicial independence or court passivity.

Zola, Émile. Thérèse Raquin. Translated by Andrew Rothwell. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199536856.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Thérèse Raquin is a clinically observed, sinister tale of adultery and murder among the lower orders in nineteenth-century Paris. Zola's dispassionate dissection of the motivations of his characters, mere ‘human beasts’ who kill in order to satisfy their lust, is much more than an atmospheric Second Empire period-piece. Many readers were scandalized by an approach to character-drawing which seemed to undermine not only the moral values of a deeply conservative society, but also the whole code of psychological description on which the realist novel was based. Together with the important ‘Preface to the Second Edition’ in which Zola defended himself against charges of immorality, Thérèse Raquin stands as a key early manifesto of the French Naturalist movement, of which Zola was the founding father. Even today, this novel has lost none of its power to shock. This new translation is based on the second edition of 1868. The Introduction situates the novel in the context of Naturalism, medicine, and the scientific ideas of Zola's day.

Abstract:
This chapter paints a collective portrait of those who deserted from the Red Army across the frontline to the Germans. It investigates their age, ethnicity, social class, and gender. It concludes that defectors from the Red Army were broadly representative of the Soviet population at large. While minority nationalities, older men, and the lower social orders were over-represented, the largest group were Russians and 40 per cent were 30 years or younger. Every ethnicity, class, and age group in Soviet society thus contained defectors. The one exception is gender. While there were a significant number of women serving in the Red Army, defectors were nearly exclusively male.
