Abstract:
The Loyola University Chicago Family Firm Stock Index (LUCFFSI) tracks the performance of publicly traded, family controlled firms headquartered in the Chicago area. Family controlled firms have governance structures that are expected to result in improved performance compared to non-family controlled firms. The LUCFFSI, over the period from September 28, 1990, to July 28, 1995, outperformed local and national indices. We discuss the design of this price-weighted index. This chapter describes how Bob Thomas met kindergarten teacher Margaret Mary Murphy during a speaking engagement at Robina Lyle Elementary School in Chicago. He then started exclusively seeing Margaret, whom he would call “Maggie.” With the grind of the season behind him, Thomas continued the rigor of the first year of law school as new friendships were forged at Loyola University with study groups among the students. Certain classes and instructors stood out to him as favorites, such as Professor Richard A. Michael. Meanwhile, the happy day for Bob and Maggie arrived on June 23, 1979, as they

This introductory chapter reviews the central problem facing past theories of activist group participation: the assumption that all activists share the same motivations for joining and committing to activist groups and that all activists follow the same biographical pathways after participating in activist groups. The chapter illustrates this problem through a vignette of three activists mobilizing for LGBT equality at their Christian colleges and universities, one who fits the traditional portrait of a highly politicized activist, but two others who come from relatively conservative or apolit

This chapter reflects on how, after a four-year journey with tiresome nights of classes while balancing professional football and being a new husband, Bob Thomas got set to tackle his final term at Loyola University in the spring semester of 1981. His daily routine required driving to Lake Forest for meetings and practices from his home in the western suburbs, into Chicago for law school in the evenings, and then commuting back home. By May, he had plowed through the remainder of his coursework. Only the bar exam—looming in late July—stood between him and his goal of becoming a practicing atto
