Abstract:
This thesis develops a model that provides a credible and reliable rough order magnitude (ROM) Life Cycle Cost Estimate (LCCE) for a newly constructed U. S. Navy Dock Landing Ship, LSD(X), over the various phases of design, procurement, and operations and support costs. The Systems Engineering Analysis (SEA) Curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) will use this estimate to help establish the costs of the proposed alternatives for LSD(X). This study also includes a cost benefit analysis through the comparison of LSD(X) to an alternative variant LSD(XB). The comparison examines how the baseline ROM LCCE of LSD(X) is affected by changes in technical parameters such as beam, number of LCACs, troop size, crew size and cargo capacity. Ultimately, this thesis provides a useful tool to aid decision makers in selecting the most cost effective alternative for the LSD(X) fleet for the expected 30 year operational period.

Tsalavoutas, Stefanos. "A psychological exploration of long-term LSD users." Thesis, University of East London, 2015. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/4617/.

Full text
Abstract:
All research involving the psychoactive compound lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was terminated globally following its prohibition more than 50 years ago, though illicit use remained fairly stable. A considerable resurgence of research interest in LSD has received considerable attention in various publications and professional fora. One of the main applications considered is LSD-assisted psychotherapy to address a number of difficulties like end-of-life anxiety, addiction/alcoholism, post-traumatic stress, and depression. However, due to the highly contradictory nature of early research findings and division in the literature, one is left uncertain as to whether psychology as a profession is currently equipped to critically evaluate these advances, let alone embrace them. The purpose of the present study was to contribute to current psychological knowledge on long-term LSD use. A group of long-term LSD users who claimed beneficial use were the focus here. A mixed methods design was employed. 110 users completed an online survey assessing for demographics, patterns of use, and specific personality traits through three psychometric measures, Big Five Inventory (BFI), General Self Efficacy scale (GSE) and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). Eight individual interviews were also conducted and analysed by Thematic Analysis (TA). Gaining different perspectives on reality and increasing self- awareness appeared to be essential elements of the belief system that these non-problematic long-term LSD users adopted in order to make sense of their LSD use. Qualitative findings also suggested the existence of a common set of life values, rules and the adoption of a hierarchical system between LSD users. Novices appeared to be tutored and guided by elders whose presence and input was valued and who were listened to and respected. A role for ‘wiser/elder’ users as those imparting valuable knowledge to novices was therefore also suggested. The underlying aim may possibly be an attempt to minimise risks and maximise potential benefits of LSD use. A prospective role for LSD as a deterrent of substance misuse, a ‘gateway drug to no drugs’ was also hinted and remains in need of iv further investigation. Claims regarding beneficial LSD use and ‘change’ through LSD use were confirmed by the participant sample. No noteworthy differences between psychometric scores of the LSD-using group and those of the general population (as suggested by normative data comparisons) were found, possibly due to methodological limitations, especially considering the highly subjective nature of the LSD experience and its effects. The determining role of extra-pharmacological variables or ‘set and setting’ in the outcome of LSD use suggested in earlier literature was re-validated. Knowledge on their specific components was enriched, and a potentially significant value for adopting a flexible, adaptable and solution-focused mind-set in order to better manage the effects of LSD was highlighted. Due to the highly selected nature of the participant sample, present findings should serve as suggestions for further research in order to clarify the aforementioned issues and to make explicit the mechanisms by which they operate. The complex nature of LSD, its use and its effects have been re-confirmed here. It is imperative that the current knowledge base on the substance is enriched before LSD is introduced in a clinical psychology professional context.

Abstract:
In this study, I use SCOT (Social Construction of Technology) theories to trace the history of lysergic acid diethylamide-25, which is commonly known as LSD. I show how the technological system of LSD corresponds to phases designated by SCOT theorist Thomas Hughes, specifically invention, development, innovation, growth, competition, and consolidation. I explain the importance of Timothy Leary and the CIA in the social construction of the LSD system, and their influences on the transformation of LSD from a chemical technology to a highly controversial drug. Finally, I discuss the fate of LSD research today, its usage among members of the public, especially youngsters, and the usefulness of SCOT theories for this study.<br>Master of Science

After presenting the historical origins of the counterculture in Brazil and in the United States, and also after contextualizing some of the relations between the members of these movements and the use of drugs, especially marijuana and lysergic acid, this work traces, mainly through the analysis of individual trajectories which intersect in one way or another, a social history of the arrival of LSD in Brazil. This thesis investigates in depth the first judicial process for trafficking and possession of the substance, begun in January 1970, in São Paulo, studying the trajectory of the main defendants, the media repercussion, the reports made a posteriori and the forms of action of the police and the justice system, at a time when not only the military dictatorship was experiencing its most violent phase, after the \"AI-5\", but the hardest drug law in the country\'s history was also in force.By analyzing the files of this process, as well as a wide variety of other sources, both oral and documentary, the beginning of the repression of LSD in Brazil is described, as well as the medical origins of the substance\'s arrival in the country.

However, a solution to the capability gap created by the loss of these ships is needed to maintain the effectiveness of the amphibious fleet across a broad spectrum of mission areas. This research effort considers future ship designs and fleet architectures to meet the capability gaps left by the decommissioning of the LSD-41 and 49 class ships. With respect to lift capacity, performance capability, cost and a risk assessment, the analysis showed the LPD-17 or a LSD(X) approximately 30% larger than the existing classes to be acceptable replacement classes. This analysis also supports further research to determine the most robust fleet architecture apart from the current eleven LHA or LHD, eleven LPD and eleven LSD paradigm.

Abstract:
Psychiatry is in a crisis. Mental health disorders are on the rise worldwide and there are currently not enough efficient treatment methods that would meet the patients’ needs. Hence, the societal and economic costs of mental health problems are enormous, as well as the suffering of individuals afflicted by mental health problems. Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin are substances that create an altered state of consciousness characterized by altered sensory perception and on some occasions, ego-dissolution, and mystical experiences. In recent studies, LSD and psilocybin have been shown to carry significant therapeutic potential in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders in conjunction with psychotherapy. The therapeutic effects of LSD and psilocybin have also been shown to persist for between 3-12 months post-treatment. LSD and psilocybin, like other classical hallucinogens, increase serotonin availability, which has been suggested to attenuate symptoms of anxiety and depression. In addition, LSD and psilocybin alter the activity of the default mode network, which has been suggested to be overly active in depressed and anxious patients. This essay is a literature review of the neural mechanisms of LSD and psilocybin, their potential therapeutic effects in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders, and how insights about said neural mechanisms may be useful in understanding the possible application of psychedelics in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. In sum, recent studies have provided converging and convincing evidence on therapeutic potential of LSD and psilocybin. Yet, few conclusions on the exact neural mechanisms of how LSD and psilocybin alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms can be made. Although the future of this research field looks promising, archaic national- and international regulations continue to be a hindrance to research into psychedelic drugs. Yet, due to the psychiatric crisis and the promising results so far, more studies in this field are warranted.

Abstract:
The effect of using curvilinear element blades (CEBs) on a low-solidity cascade diffuser (LSD) in a centrifugal compressor was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Centrifugal compressors require a higher efficiency and wider operating range to reduce the lifecycle costs of plants in which they are used and the effects their users have on the environment. A LSD has a wider operating range than a common vaned diffuser that has high solidity, but worse efficiency at the design point. For this reason, this research aims to improve the efficiency of the LSD and keep its operating range wide without changing the blade setting angle or two-dimensional geometry. As a first step, LSDs with three different curvilinear element profiles were compared with a conventional LSD, and the mechanism of the performance improvement was investigated by using a numerical simulation. These diffusers have the same two-dimensional geometry, blade setting angle, and number of blades but different blade stacking geometry in the span-wise direction. Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations were conducted using a one-blade path model with an inlet, impeller, and LSD diffuser passages. The LSD using the CEBs improved the efficiency by 1.9% over that of the conventional LSD at the design point while maintaining the same operating range. The calculation results reveal that the recirculation region decreased at the suction surface of the diffuser vane in the CEB case and the diffuser efficiency improved. The concaved suction surface increased the blade loading and induced higher velocity on the suction surface. The higher velocity prevented reverse flow on the suction surface at the hub side, and the secondary flow removed the thick boundary layer at the trailing edge to the downstream of the diffuser. Experimental verification was also conducted using a single-stage compressor with an impeller, diffuser, and scroll casing to verify the prediction. The experimental results showed the LSD using the CEB has a higher pressure rise at the stator region than the conventional LSD and verified the performance improvement due to using the CEBs.

Abstract:
A Low Solidity circular cascade Diffuser (LSD) in a centrifugal blower is designed by means of multi-objective optimization technique. An optimization code with a meta-model assisted evolutionary algorithm is used with a commercial CFD code ANSYS-CFX. The optimization is aiming at improving the static pressure coefficient at design point and at small flow rate condition while constraining the slope of the lift coefficient curve. Seven detailed design parameters describing the shape and position of the LSD vane were introduced. Moreover, a small tip clearance of the LSD blade was applied in order to activate and to stabilize the secondary flow effect at small flow rate conditions. The optimized LSD blade has been manufactured and the characteristic of optimized LSD is confirmed by the experimental test rig. Optimized LSD has an extended operating range of 114 % towards smaller flow rate as compared to the baseline design without deteriorating the diffuser pressure recovery at design point. The detailed flow in the diffuser is also confirmed by means of a Particle Image Velocimetery (PIV). The flow was compared between in the cases with and without tip clearance. In spite of the fluctuating flow at the diffuser inlet, secondary flow spreads to the whole area of LSD blade pitch stably. Stable secondary flow suppresses flow separation at the suction surface of the LSD. It is found that the optimized LSD blade shows good improvement of the blade loading in the whole operating range, while at small flow rate the flow separation on the LSD blade has been successfully suppressed by the secondary flow effect.

Abstract:
In radial compressors or blowers, a low solidity circular cascade diffuser (LSD) is one of the effective devices to improve the pressure recovery at design flow rate while guaranteeing a wide operating range. The improvement is mainly attributed to the so called secondary flow effect, which reduces the flow separation on the LSD blade at small flow rates. However, it is very difficult to find out the effective shape of the blade in order to promote this secondary flow effect. In this paper, a multipoint and multi-objective optimization technique is applied to design the LSD blade of a centrifugal blower. The optimization method has been developed at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), which makes use of an evolutionary algorithm, a metamodel as a rapid exploration tool, and a high fidelity 3D Navier-Stokes solver. The optimization is aiming at improving the static pressure coefficient at design point and at low flow rate condition while constraining the slope of the lift coefficient curve. Seven detailed design parameters describing the shape and position of the LSD vane were introduced, e.g. the radial spacing between impeller exit and the LSD leading edge, the radial chord length and the mean camber angle distribution of the LSD blade with five control points. Moreover, a small tip clearance of the LSD blade was applied in order to activate and to stabilize the secondary flow effect at small flow rate condition. The optimized LSD blade has an extended operating range of 114 % towards smaller flow rate as compared to the baseline design without deteriorating the diffuser pressure recovery at design point. The diffuser pressure rise and operating flow range of the optimized LSD blade are experimentally verified. It is found that the optimized LSD blade shows good improvement of the blade loading in the whole operating range, while at small flow rate the flow separation on the LSD blade has been successfully suppressed by the secondary flow effect. This is fully corresponding to the CFD predictions and demonstrates the effectiveness of the optimization methodology, by limiting the experimental testing to only two geometries.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the effect of the blade leading edge location (RLSD) of a low solidity cascade diffuser (LSD) on noise and diffuser performance in a centrifugal blower. The noise of the LSD was measured and analyzed comparing with that of vaneless diffuser (VLD) in view points of overall noise, discrete frequency noise and broadband noise. The numerical flow analysis was conducted in the impeller and the diffuser by using a Navier-Stokes solver. The noise of the VLD varied little in a wide flow rate range, on the other hand, that of the LSD increased remarkably in the small flow rate by about 7 dB. The noise of the LSD did not increase near the design flow and was almost equal to that of the VLD. It was found that the increase in noise due to LSD is dependent mainly on the broadband noise between 600∼1000Hz, which was closely correlated to the lift force of the LSD blade. The two kinds of discrete frequency noise appeared due to an interaction between the rotating impeller and the LSD blade and another interaction between the rotating impeller blades and the reverse flow toward the impeller exit, but their influence on the overall noise were relatively small. By shifting the LSD blade leading edge location downstream from RLSD = 1.1 to 1.2, the noise was reduced by about 3 dB at the maximum without deterioration of the diffuser performance. The maximum lift coefficient of the LSD blade was achieved as high as 1.5 at the high attack angle of 17 degrees even in the case of RLSD = 1.2, resulting in improvement of the diffuser performance by about 40% and in reduction of the unstable flow range by about 11%.

Abstract:
A high efficiency and a wide operating range are required in recent centrifugal compressors and blowers. Low solidity circular cascade diffuser (LSD) was proposed in place of vaned diffuser and channel diffuser for achieving both higher pressure ratio and wider operating range. In the present study, aerodynamic performance and noise characteristics of LSD were investigated changing a radial location of LSD leading-edge. It is known that an interaction occurs between jet-wake flow discharged from the rotating impeller and the LSD leading edge, however jet-wake flow pattern is almost uniformalized until the radial position of R = 1.20 in the vaneless diffuser. Aiming at reducing the noise generated by the interaction mentioned above, the LSD leading edge was moved from RLSD = 1.10 to 1.15 and 1.20 in a centrifugal blower with low specific speed. The frequency spectra of noise were analyzed and the noise due to LSD were discussed from the view point of overall noise, discrete frequency noise and broadband noise. In order to clarify the relationship between the flow field and the noise, flow behavior in the impeller as well as in the diffuser was simulated using a Navier-Stokes solver ANSYS-CFX. According to the present experimental results, about 40% improvement in diffuser performance and about 11% improvement in unstable flow range were achieved in small flow rates by the LSD compared with the vaneless diffuser except for a small deterioration in diffuser performance at the large flow rate. On the other hand, the noise increased clearly in the case of RLSD = 1.10 at the large flow rate and the small flow rates as well. By locating the LSD blade leading edge downstream farther from the impeller exit, a remarkable reduction in overall noise was achieved without deterioration of diffuser performance. It is found that the noise increase due to LSD is mainly dependent on the broadband noise based on the jet-wake flow, the interaction between the reverse flow and the impeller blades results in the discrete frequency noise defined by the frequency of cross product of the rotational speed of the impeller and the number of LSD blade, and a significant reduction in noise is achieved by uniformalization of the jet-wake flow.

Zimmerman and Chen. L51769 Limit States and Reliability-Based Pipeline Design. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010325.

Abstract:
The objective is to develop fully calibrated limit states design (LSD) procedures for pipelines. Limit states design, also known as load and resistance factor design (LRFD), provides a unified approach to dealing with all relevant failure modes and load combinations of concern. It explicitly accounts for the uncertainties that naturally occur in the determination of the loads which act on a pipeline and in the resistance of the pipe to failure. The load and resistance factors used are based on reliability considerations; however, the designer is not faced with carrying out probabilistic calculations. LSD suggests that if pipelines are designed directly for those scenarios which are known to be the major causes of pipeline failure, the result will be better design in terms of both safety and economy. This study shows that LSD is a rational and logical design process that can provide consistent levels of safety and give the designer a clear picture of the structural response of the pipe for all credible failure modes.

Abstract:

Paran, Ilan, and Allen Van Deynze. Regulation of pepper fruit color, chloroplasts development and their importance in fruit quality. United States Department of Agriculture, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2014.7598173.bard.

Abstract:
Pepper exhibits large natural variation in chlorophyll content in the immature fruit. To dissect the genetic and molecular basis of this variation, we conducted QTL mapping for chlorophyll content in a cross between light and dark green-fruited parents, PI 152225 and 1154. Two major QTLs, pc1 and pc10, that control chlorophyll content by modulation of chloroplast compartment size in a fruit-specific manner were detected in chromosomes 1 and 10, respectively. The pepper homolog of GOLDEN2- LIKE transcription factor (CaGLK2) was found as underlying pc10, similar to its effect on tomato fruit chloroplast development. A candidate gene for pc1was found as controlling chlorophyll content in pepper by the modulation of chloroplast size and number. Fine mapping of pc1 aided by bulked DNA and RNA-seq analyses enabled the identification of a zinc finger transcription factor LOL1 (LSD-One-Like 1) as a candidate gene underlying pc1. LOL1 is a positive regulator of oxidative stress- induced cell death in Arabidopsis. However, over expression of the rice ortholog resulted in an increase of chlorophyll content. Interestingly, CaAPRR2 that is linked to the QTL and was found to affect immature pepper fruit color in a previous study, did not have a significant effect on chlorophyll content in the present study. Verification of the candidate's function was done by generating CRISPR/Cas9 knockout mutants of the orthologues tomato gene, while its knockout experiment in pepper by genome editing is under progress. Phenotypic similarity as a consequence of disrupting the transcription factor in both pepper and tomato indicated its functional conservation in controlling chlorophyll content in the Solanaceae. A limited sequence diversity study indicated that null mutations in CaLOL1 and its putative interactorCaMIP1 are present in C. chinensebut not in C. annuum. Combinations of mutations in CaLOL1, CaMIP1, CaGLK2 and CaAPRR2 are required for the creation of the extreme variation in chlorophyll content in Capsicum.
