Nownes, Anthony J., and Colin Glennon. "An Experimental Investigation of How Judicial Elections Affect Public Faith in the Judicial System." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://doi.org/10.1111/lsi.12159.

Full text
Abstract:
Judicial scholars have often speculated about the impact of elections on the administration of justice in the state courts. Yet relatively little research has concerned itself with public perceptions of state court selection methods. Of particular interest is the concept of legitimacy. Do elections negatively affect public perceptions of judicial legitimacy? Bonneau and Hall (2009) and Gibson (2012) answer this question with an emphatic “No.” Judicial elections, these studies show, are not uniquely troublesome for perceptions of institutional legitimacy. This article aims to extend the findings of Bonneau and Hall and Gibson via a laboratory experiment on the effects of elections on public perceptions of judicial legitimacy. In the end, we find that because elections preempt the use of the other main selection method—appointment—they actually enhance perceptions of judicial legitimacy rather than diminish them.

Millet-Mendoza, Claire. Thesis, Grenoble, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012GRENS032.

Full text
Abstract:
Aging is the cause of different dermatological diseases, facilitated by extrinsic factors, especially UV radiation: skin cancers, dermatoporosis, ulcers … Chronic ulcerations cause chronic pains, hospitalizations, increasing cost of health, death in the elderly population. Yet, the link between skin aging, microvascular aging and ulcers remains still unclear. Our objective is to study microvascular function on the gaiter skin area of elderly, because abnormal microvascular reactivity could contribute to ulcerations in this region, after development of the techniques used to assess cutaneous microvascular reactivity to young subjects. The first part of our work is interested in the most recent methods of measure of the cutaneous blood flow. It aims at comparing the Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging and the Laser Doppler Imaging in terms of reproducibility then at estimating the correlation of the measures according to these two techniques. The second part is a methodological study concerning the microdialysis, to determine wether intradermal or subdermal microdialysis fibers insertion can be used to assess post-occlusive hyperemia and local thermal hyperemia. In the third part, we study the physiological aging of in the supramedial malleolar skin, high-risk area of ulceration to the elderly subject. Further studies are required to determinate whether the changes in the physiological microvascular responses to local heating explain the higher incidence of skin ulcerations in the elderly

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with the design of the replacement the Z 143 LSi landing gear with the new VUT 100 type landing gear in a retractable system. The first part of this thesis is devoted to the description of the Z 143 LSi aircraft and its landing gear and the description of the retractable landing gear type VUT 100. The next part describes the possible variants of the installation the VUT 100 landing gear, which are critically evaluated. Then there is selected the final variant for the installation, which is designed in Catia V5 software. The final design includes remotorization with Lycoming IO-390 and new design of engine bed. For the proposed solution, a new mass analysis with the calculation of centrations, new cases of ground load, a new flight envelope of load and additional cases of load of a new engine bed are prepared. The proposed engine bed is analyzed by the finite element calculation method in the MS Patran software. Finally, a possible scheme of the chassis retraction system is proposed.

Abstract:
We present new 6 cm observations of the binary radio, X-ray and ɿ -ray star GT0236+610 (LSI+61°303) obtained in August 1984 and September 1986. Ve calculate an improved period for the source's periodic radio outbursts of 26.50 ± 0.03 days. No significant period derivative was found. Based on an analysis of 201 flux density measurements from 1977 August to 1986 September, we find evidence for a possible 4 year modulation of the amplitude of the 26.50 day periodic radio outbursts. A precessing jet model for this long period modulation is discussed.

Liu, Yang. "A resource aware distributed LSI algorithm for scalable information retrieval." Thesis, Brunel University, 2011. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5559.

Full text
Abstract:
Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is one of the popular techniques in the information retrieval fields. Different from the traditional information retrieval techniques, LSI is not based on the keyword matching simply. It uses statistics and algebraic computations. Based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), the higher dimensional matrix is converted to a lower dimensional approximate matrix, of which the noises could be filtered. And also the issues of synonymy and polysemy in the traditional techniques can be overcome based on the investigations of the terms related with the documents. However, it is notable that LSI suffers a scalability issue due to the computing complexity of SVD. This thesis presents a resource aware distributed LSI algorithm MR-LSI which can solve the scalability issue using Hadoop framework based on the distributed computing model MapReduce. It also solves the overhead issue caused by the involved clustering algorithm. The evaluations indicate that MR-LSI can gain significant enhancement compared to the other strategies on processing large scale of documents. One remarkable advantage of Hadoop is that it supports heterogeneous computing environments so that the issue of unbalanced load among nodes is highlighted. Therefore, a load balancing algorithm based on genetic algorithm for balancing load in static environment is proposed. The results show that it can improve the performance of a cluster according to heterogeneity levels. Considering dynamic Hadoop environments, a dynamic load balancing strategy with varying window size has been proposed. The algorithm works depending on data selecting decision and modeling Hadoop parameters and working mechanisms. Employing improved genetic algorithm for achieving optimized scheduler, the algorithm enhances the performance of a cluster with certain heterogeneity levels.

Baumann, Florian. "Vieillissement et comportement d’échelle dynamique hors équilibre." Thesis, Nancy 1, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007NAN10106/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Ageing phenomena and dynamical scaling behaviour have been observed in many out-of-equilibrium systems, but a general framework for the description of such systems is still missing. A first step in this direction is the theory of local scale-invariance (LSI), which attempts to identify generalised forms of spatio-temporal dynamical scaling. For systems with a dynamical exponent z = 2, it has already been known how to treat stochastic partial differential equations and the consequences have been verified in many explicit models. In this thesis a reformulation and extension of LSI for systems with z ? 2 is presented. We infer for the first time generalised Bargmann superselection and discuss extended dynamical symmetries of Langevin equations with z ? 2. We can establish a formalism for the calculation of non-equilibrium correlation -and response functions and the results are confirmed in several new model calculations. Secondly, the ageing behaviour in reaction-diffusion systems is investigated. Although the main features of ageing as seen in magnets are still valid, important differences in exponent relations are found. Explicitly, the contact process is studied through field-theoretical methods and two bosonic models are solved exactly. For the latter, we show how to extend LSI with z = 2 to nonlinear models. Thirdly, the ageing behaviour in semi-infinite magnetic systems close to the surface is considered. The results show that the general scaling picture known from infinite systems remains valid, but some ageing exponents and scaling functions differ from the bulk quantities

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

McNown, Scott Raymond. "Coordinate transformations for approximate LSI modeling of LSV systems, and applications to restoration." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282148.

Full text
Abstract:
A method is presented for finding coordinate transformations (warpings) of "objects" and "images," related by a shift-variant linear system model, such that the warped objects and images are approximately related by a shift-invariant linear system model. Such warps have utility for inverse solutions to linear problems, in which solution times for shift-invariant systems are less than the solution times for shift-variant systems. To this end, a measure of shift-variance for sampled linear systems is proposed. This measure allows for a variability in the sampling locations, as well as separable multipliers in the object and image domains (collectively called warping parameters), so that the measure may be used as the objective function for an optimization problem. Properties of the desired solution, which includes adequate field coverage and limits on the allowable warps, are also proposed. These features are combined in a formally stated optimization problem, which will search for a set of sample locations and multipliers to minimize the shift-variance of the warped system. The performance of a number of optimization algorithms which were directed at this task are presented. Also reported are results for finding the optimal warpings for some example one-dimensional systems. Inverse solutions, using both linear and non-linear techniques, are obtained using this warping method, and these results are compared to related inverse solutions which directly perform shift-variant inversion.

Pacalo, Carla Ann. "Learning Style AND Entrepreneurial Operations:A Small Business Study." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/64401.

Abstract:
Americans spent approximately $47.7 billion on pet products and services in 2010, an increase of 4.8% over 2009, making the pet industry a market segment ripe with opportunity for entrepreneurial small business venture (American Pet Products Association, 2013). Small businesses invite innovation, create and provide new jobs, foster entrepreneurial spirit and creativity, and create competition that drives future business endeavors (Hillary, 2001). The pet dog industry is a salient example of entrepreneurial activity in which the pressures of business, economics, and learning coalesce. Because small businesses bolster about half of the private-sector economy and represent more than 99% of all business firms (Small Business Administration, 2013), it is useful for small business owners to learn and prosper as entrepreneurs. "Entrepreneurship is a learning process, and a theory of entrepreneurship requires a theory of learning" (Minniti, 2010, p. 9). However, there is still limited knowledge and understanding of the interaction between learning and entrepreneurship, and such a process remains one of the most neglected areas of entrepreneurial research and thus understanding (Deakins and Freel, 1999). This study explored entrepreneurial decision making by using the construct of David A. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory to examine an entrepreneurial operation in the pet dog-training industry. The researcher worked hand-in-hand with the entrepreneur in a collaborative partnership to explore the phenomenon using narrative inquiry research methods. A series of semi-structured interviews were used to collect and analyze stories and identify key considerations for learning style in relation to entrepreneurship. The results showed the entrepreneur's preferred learning style aligned with his expressed style and demonstrated a keen sense of operations awareness. Additionally, the entrepreneur had learned how to leverage his strengths over time while recognizing and compensating for his weaknesses. For a novice or someone with a desire to learn more about their own entrepreneurial inclinations, results from a learning style instrument could provide such understandings with helpful implications for small business ownership. Future studies could contribute to entrepreneurial research and add greater voice to the pet dog industry.

Abstract:
This research examines the possible correlations between a computing student's learning preference and their academic success, as well as their overall satisfaction with their major. CS and IT seniors at BYU were surveyed about their learning preferences and satisfaction with their major. The research found that IT students who are more reflective in their learning preference tend to have higher grades in their major. Additionally, it found that student age and their parents' education level were significant players in their academic success. However, there were no correlations found between major satisfaction and academic performance.

Abstract:
This master’ thesis deals with the design of the front landing gear for Zlín 40 aircrafts. The main emphasis in the research part of the work is placed on the selection of a new nose landing gear and the subsequent design of the structure. For the structural design was prepared a new mass analysis and load cases. The load-bearing capacity of the structure is verified using analytical and numerical methods of FEM. An important step of the work is the design concept of structure. The aim of the work is to point out the new possibilities of the nose landing gear structure and verify its feasibility for the case of future implementation.

Riley, Owen G. "Termediator-II: Identification of Interdisciplinary Term Ambiguity Through Hierarchical Cluster Analysis." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4030.

Full text
Abstract:
Technical disciplines are evolving rapidly leading to changes in their associated vocabularies. Confusion in interdisciplinary communication occurs due to this evolving terminology. Two causes of confusion are multiple definitions (overloaded terms) and synonymous terms. The formal names for these two problems are polysemy and synonymy. Termediator-I, a web application built on top of a collection of glossaries, uses definition count as a measure of term confusion. This tool was an attempt to identify confusing cross-disciplinary terms. As more glossaries were added to the collection, this measure became ineffective. This thesis provides a measure of term polysemy. Term polysemy is effectively measured by semantically clustering the text concepts, or definitions, of each term and counting the number of resulting clusters. Hierarchical clustering uses a measure of proximity between the text concepts. Three such measures are evaluated: cosine similarity, latent semantic indexing, and latent Dirichlet allocation. Two linkage types, for determining cluster proximity during the hierarchical clustering process, are also evaluated: complete linkage and average linkage. Crowdsourcing through a web application was unsuccessfully attempted to obtain a viable clustering threshold by public consensus. An alternate metric of polysemy, convergence value, is identified and tested as a viable clustering threshold. Six resulting lists of terms ranked by cluster count based on convergence values are generated, one for each similarity measure and linkage type combination. Each combination produces a competitive list, and no clear combination can be determined as superior. Semantic clustering successfully identifies polysemous terms, but each similarity measure and linkage type combination provides slightly different results.

Gildenhuys, Carin. "Investigation of the role of the extracellular β-agarase, produced by the bacterial epiphyte Pseudoalteromonas sp. LS2i, in the virulence response towards the agarophyte Gracilaria gracilis." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/4266.

Gracilaria gracilis that grows naturally at Saldanha Bay, South Africa is economically important as a source of agar. The Gracilaria yields from natural beds at Saldanha Bay are however unreliable, and consequently the South African Gracilaria industry has experienced a number of setbacks over the years. The only way a consistent supply can be assured is by mariculture to supplement the natural harvests. In 1993 the Seaweed Research Institute (SRU) found that mariculture of G. gracilis in Saldanha Bay is feasible but that there is potential to improve yields by technical research and development (Anderson et al.1996a). Jaffray and Coyne (1996) developed a pathogenicity assay that demonstrated that agarolytic bacteria isolated from Saldanha Bay Gracilaria induced disease symptoms such as thallus bleaching, while non-agarolytic isolates did not. It is thought that unfavorable environmental conditions such as elevated water temperature and nutrient depletion, which occur during the summer months in the surface layers of the water column in Saldanha Bay, induce the onset of agarase production or result in changes in the bacterial community structure in which agarase-producers become more dominant. By using the pathogenicity assay, Jaffray and Coyne (1996) identified the highly agarolytic Gracilaria gracilis pathogen, Pseudoalteromonas sp. LS2i. The aim of this study was to characterize the bacterial pathogen, Pseudoalteromonas sp. LS2i to further our understanding of virulence regulation and specifically, the role of the agarase enzymes in the process of seaweed-pathogen interaction. Two agarolytic clones, pEB1 and pJB1, were obtained after constructing and screening a Pseudoalteromonas sp. LS2i genomic library in Esherichia coli. Restriction enzyme mapping suggested that both clones contain the same agarase gene. Southern hybridization studies confirmed the origin of the cloned DNA and sequencing studies revealed the 1062 bp ORF, putative promoter region, putative ribosome binding site and putative transcriptional start point of the cloned agarase gene. The ORF showed sequence identity to several other β-agarases and was identified as a member of the GH-16 family of glycoside hydrolases. The agarase was purified from the E. coli JM109 (pEB3) transformant. The molecular weight was estimated to be 39 kDa by SDS-PAGE. Zymogram analysis confirmed that the purified protein is agarolytic and TLC analysis revealed that the predominant end-products of agar hydrolysis are neoagarohexaose and neoagarobiose, which indicates the same mode of action as that observed for the agarase produced extracellularly by Pseudoalteromonas sp. LS2i.
