Abstract:
The study assessed the impact of performance management systems (PMS) on reward management and staff motivation at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in Malawi. Its objectives were: to assess the implementation of the PMS at LUANAR, focusing on its alignment with reward management practices and its effect on staff motivation; to examine the efficacy of the current PMS at LUANAR in enhancing reward management practices and staff motivation; and to identify challenges affecting the optimal functioning of the PMS along with devised interventions at LUANAR. The study utilized Performance Management and Equity Theories to assess PMS alignment with reward practices. A mixed-method design was employed, incorporating qualitative and quantitative approaches. The sample included 106 respondents, comprising: academic staff, administrative personnel, and management officials involved with PMS using purposive sampling for specific groups and simple random sampling for statistical representativeness. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews and structured questionnaires. A 100% questionnaire return rate was achieved. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns, while quantitative data were processed using descriptive statistics with SPSS version 20. The analysis showed that 67% of respondents viewed the alignment between PMS and reward management positively, although 27% noted inconsistencies in reward reflection. Motivation levels varied, with 49% experiencing an increase and 33% reporting a decrease, indicating issues with the clarity of performance-reward links. While 80% of respondents reported a high adoption rate, 10% faced barriers such as insufficient training. Performance metrics were positively rated by 60%, but 15% found them unclear. Additionally, concerns included inconsistent professional development opportunities and perceived inequities in rewards and feedback. Besides, the study noted that the ineffectiveness of the current PMS is due to a lack of coherent government policy and insufficient leadership support, leading to non-adherence to performance practices and a decline in service delivery, which negatively affects staff motivation and rewards. In response, the study recommends that LUANAR refine its PMS by ensuring transparent and consistent reward criteria, improving clarity in performance-reward links, and investing in comprehensive training programs. The university should also clarify performance metrics, standardize feedback protocols, and develop equitable professional development opportunities. Enhancing leadership support for the PMS and addressing perceived inequities in reward distribution are crucial for boosting staff engagement and effectiveness. These recommendations aim at addressing identified deficiencies and improve the implementation and impact of the PMS at LUANAR.

Abstract:
As part of continuous process improvements to teaching and learning, the management of tertiary institutions requests students to review modules towards the end of each semester. These reviews capture students’ perceptions about various aspects of their learning experience. Considering the large volume of textual feedback, it is not feasible to manually analyze all the comments, hence the need for automated approaches. This study presents a framework for analyzing students’ qualitative reviews. The framework consists of four distinct components: aspect-term extraction, aspect-category identification, sentiment polarity determination, and grades’ prediction. We evaluated the framework with the dataset from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). A sample size of 1,111 reviews was used. A microaverage F1-score of 0.67 was achieved using Bi- LSTM-CRF and BIO tagging scheme for aspect-term extraction. Twelve aspect categories were then defined for the education domain and four variants of RNNs models (GRU, LSTM, Bi-LSTM, and Bi-GRU) were compared. A Bi-GRU model was developed for sentiment polarity determination and the model achieved a weighted F1-score of 0.96 for sentiment analysis. Finally, a Bi-LSTM-ANN model which combined textual and numerical features was implemented to predict students’ grades based on the reviews. A weighted F1-score of 0.59 was obtained, and out of 29 students with “F” grade, 20 were correctly identified by the model.

Abstract:

In a comparative perspective, between literature and society, this thesis analyzes space and speech in two Angolan narratives, Quem me dera ser onda (1982), by Manuel Rui, and Bom dia camaradas (2000), by Ondjaki. In chapter 2, the analysis focuses on the representation of spaces of city Luanda, in three instances: private, collective and public, in other words: house/home, buildings/apartment anda school; as well as its relations with the speech. In chapter 3, I demonstrate how space and speech are interconnected to the counterspeech (mujimbo). Inside this, I hope also demonstrate how the system of social contradictions suture the structure of the narratives.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This final masters project questions the relation between the city of Portuguese origin and the territory/region where it’s inserted, specifically the singular question of the hills/slopes occupation, in other words, rugged topography. The goal is to understand these urban rupture phenomena, and how can Architecture help to solve them. It is also questioned the articulation processes that might connect the uptown and the downtown through the edified, with a strong infrastructural component that develops new routes and mobilities. The investigation focuses on the Miramar slope, in Luanda, an area that divides and splits, due to its morphology, the downtown and uptown areas into two distinct realities. This hill, a decharacterized area and urban rupture element that behaves like an urban void, is the focal point of a city scaled intervention. The intervention centres on the hill itself and on a strategy that connects this new and improved part of the lower city to the higher area. Therefore the city will be united in just one part, instead of two different ones. The project arises based on these premises and states itself as a complex building that creates voids and new pathways strategically located between the different volumes. These volumes are simultaneously a construction that takes advantage of the slope and adapts to it, housing a vast program of cultural and leisure uses. It is intended not only to break the existing physical barriers but also to promote new crossings between distinct elevations. Creating added value through the intervention, which is materialized in an exceptional building that behaves like a joint, creating qualified public space balanced with crossing, permanence and usufruct.
N/A

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Luanda is the starting point for a study on the tropical city, on its development, on its problems and necessities, but most importantly its a study on how to build a city. Its by understanding its various elements, such as the reality of the dichotomy of the formal and informal city, that it becomes possible to propose a course of development, because creating a city is more than building blocks, its about proposing a way to use said blocks, allowing for the creation of a city. This study focuses on how the history and culture affected Luanda, and what can be done for its development, all the while taking into account that the city is made by people, and must be though of as whole between the buildings and how people use those buildings. As such there is a focus on housing, which is a matter for planning, as well as for architecture. This shift in focus allows for further study and understanding of the culture, as well as bridging the gap that exists between urban planning and housing, allowing a more coherent response to a problem many cities face.
N/A

ABSTRACT: This essay is based on the analysis of an African neighborhood, located in Luanda (Angola). This analysis is related to the need to preserve the architectural and urbanistic identity of a region, documenting and cataloging the elements that allow us to recognize its existence in historical moments of the city, chronologically referencing it in time. The objective of this work is, and in a very modest way, to understand and alert the constant demolition of emblematic buildings that once characterized the landscape of the city and consequent transformation, but which gradually disappear from the real plan due to real estate speculation and the emerging need to give the city a new layer, associated with a modern and dynamic image.
N/A
