Abstract:

Abstract. The high-resolution CO2 record from Law Dome ice core reveals that atmospheric CO2 concentration stalled during the 1940s (so-called CO2 plateau). Since the fossil-fuel emissions did not decrease during the period, this stalling implies the persistence of a strong sink, perhaps sustained for as long as a decade or more. Double-deconvolution analyses have attributed this sink to the ocean, conceivably as a response to the very strong El Niño event in 1940–1942. However, this explanation is questionable, as recent ocean CO2 data indicate that the range of variability in the ocean sink has been rather modest in recent decades, and El Niño events have generally led to higher growth rates of atmospheric CO2 due to the offsetting terrestrial response. Here, we use the most up-to-date information on the different terms of the carbon budget: fossil-fuel emissions, four estimates of land-use change (LUC) emissions, ocean uptake from two different reconstructions, and the terrestrial sink modelled by the TRENDY project to identify the most likely causes of the 1940s plateau. We find that they greatly overestimate atmospheric CO2 growth rate during the plateau period, as well as in the 1960s, in spite of giving a plausible explanation for most of the 20th century carbon budget, especially from 1970 onwards. The mismatch between reconstructions and observations during the CO2 plateau epoch of 1940–1950 ranges between 0.9 and 2.0 Pg C yr−1, depending on the LUC dataset considered. This mismatch may be explained by (i) decadal variability in the ocean carbon sink not accounted for in the reconstructions we used, (ii) a further terrestrial sink currently missing in the estimates by land-surface models, or (iii) LUC processes not included in the current datasets. Ocean carbon models from CMIP5 indicate that natural variability in the ocean carbon sink could explain an additional 0.5 Pg C yr−1 uptake, but it is unlikely to be higher. The impact of the 1940–1942 El Niño on the observed stabilization of atmospheric CO2 cannot be confirmed nor discarded, as TRENDY models do not reproduce the expected concurrent strong decrease in terrestrial uptake. Nevertheless, this would further increase the mismatch between observed and modelled CO2 growth rate during the CO2 plateau epoch. Tests performed using the OSCAR (v2.2) model indicate that changes in land use not correctly accounted for during the period (coinciding with drastic socioeconomic changes during the Second World War) could contribute to the additional sink required. Thus, the previously proposed ocean hypothesis for the 1940s plateau cannot be confirmed by independent data. Further efforts are required to reduce uncertainty in the different terms of the carbon budget during the first half of the 20th century and to better understand the long-term variability of the ocean and terrestrial CO2 sinks.

Abstract:

Abstract During the Second World War, both in the Dutch East Indies and in Curaçao, journals were published in which Dutch authors could publish their works unhampered by German censorship. In addition, literary works in Dutch were published in the Dutch East Indies, South Africa and New York. A man involved in all these initiatives was Jan Greshoff, an author who had played an important role in Dutch literature during the time between the two world wars. In this article, the role of Greshoff in relation to the literary journal De Stoep, which originated in Curaçao after the German occupation of Holland in 1940, will be explored. Although he never went to Curaçao and never met the journal’s founder, Luc. Tournier, in person, Greshoff played an important role in the history of De Stoep during the years of the war, and thus indirectly in the development of Dutch literature in Curaçao.

Abstract:

Abstract Background: For DCIS, a preneoplastic lesion with a 15-50% chance of recurrence or progression, there is a reappraisal of the necessity of aggressive treatment with its attendant toxicities. HB21(Fv)-PE40, a conjugate of an Fv fragment of the human transferrin-receptor (TFR) mAb and a 40 kDa fragment of bacterial Pseudomonas exotoxin (PE), has potent tumor cell killing activity. HB21(Fv)-PE40 binds to abundantly expressed TFR on cancer cells; the molecule is internalized, processed, and trafficked to the cytosol. Inside the cell, PE-toxin catalyzes the transfer of ADP ribose from nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) to elongation factor 2 (EF2), inactivates EF2, and leads to an arrest in protein translation and cell death by apoptosis. However, due to its abundant expression in the liver, the recombinant immunotoxin (RIT) is potentially toxic. We hypothesized that RIT administration via the mammary ductal opening at the teat will destroy preneoplasias, both visible and occult, in the entire ductal tree, while systemic effects will be minimal. The intraductal approach could provide a direct, safe, and highly effective treatment for DCIS. Methods: We tested this concept in two models of DCIS using an ER/PR-, HER2+ cell line derived from a DCIS, SUM225-Luc, and in the ER/PR+, HER2- breast cancer cell line, MCF-7-Luc. In both cell lines, the IC50 of the toxin was in the nM range. DCIS developed within one week in the MIND models following i.duc injection of tumor cells in the 4th pair of mammary glands of female NSG mice. On day 7, the tumor-bearing mice received vehicle, TFR mAb alone, or the HB21(Fv)-PE40 conjugate by the i.duc or i.v route three times at weekly intervals and were observed for 1-6 months. Within two weeks of the treatment, IVIS imaging signals were undetectable in the mammary gland treated with RIT i.duc in both the models (P<0.0001). Mammary gland whole mount analysis, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry for Ki67, Ku80, TFR and CD31 showed that i.duc toxin rendered more than 90% of the mice tumor-free. Pharmacokinetics studies were conducted in mice with the RIT administered i.v. or i.duc. RIT was undetectable by TFR-ELISA in the blood of i.duc-treated mice. Conclusions. Overall, we have shown that HB21(Fv)-PE40 has remarkable antitumor activity by i.duc administration in two MIND models of DCIS. RIT was undetectable in blood after i.duc injection by ELISA, suggesting that the toxin remains inside the ductal system during its 30 min half-life. This preclinical study provides a solid foundation for a clinical study. Dose escalation studies of HB21(Fv)-PE40 by the i.duc route could be performed in patients with DCIS and early breast cancer who will undergo mastectomy as part of their treatment regimen. This study design will allow a detailed examination of the local (breast) and systemic effects of i.duc HB21(Fv)-PE40. It will introduce a potent agent for DCIS treatment and cancer interception in women at high risk of developing breast cancer. The contribution of the immune system remains to be explored. Abstract:

The article examines one of the episodes of the literary struggle of the late 1920s — early 1930s — the history of the entry of the Literary Center of Constructivists (LCC) into the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP). At the beginning of 1930, almost all literary groups and associations faced the need to define a new level of interaction with RAPP. LCC, as one of the literary groups closest to RAPP, seemed to have all the prerequisites for a successful association with the RAPP. But in reality, this did not happen. Members of RAPP are suspicious of constructivists; attacks at LCC are becoming more frequent in the press. Always considered a left-wing association, LLC is declared a petty-bourgeois group, with which, despite its disbandment, an irreconcilable struggle is required. This article bears upon not only the periodicals of 1930 but also and mainly upon the hitherto unstudied transcripts and other archival documents of RAPP. New archival materials reveal internal processes of the literary struggle at the turn of the decade, and make it possible to demonstrate how, even after the acceptance of the Constructivists by RAPP, the former continue to be perceived as a hostile group whose past was to always blame them.

Abstract:

Abstract Background: Metastasis is the prime cause of cancer associated mortality. Lymph nodes (LNs) facilitate the systemic exposure of tumor cells, resulting in fatal systemic metastasis. Treatment of metastatic LNs is therefore imperative. However, successful treatment of metastatic LNs is challenging. Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy is an emerging therapy approved for several advanced malignancies. However, ICI therapy in the context of metastatic LNs remains unexplored due to the absence of reliable models and inquisition techniques. Additionally, while systemically delivered ICI therapy has delivered encouraging results, response is often erratic and mired by unwarranted side effects. To harness the benefits of ICI therapy, it is imperative to uncouple therapeutic response from off-target events. The present study sought to develop an effective intervention strategy using α-CTLA4 mAb for the treatment of metastatic LNs that addresses this unmet need. Methods: Using a murine model of LN metastasis, the therapeutic efficacy of low-dose α-CTLA4 mAb administered to different sites locally, using a novel lymphatic drug delivery system (LDDS) or intraperitoneally (i.p.) was examined. The mouse model was established using luciferase labelled cells in a recombinant inbred strain of mice exhibiting systemic lymphadenopathy (LM8-Luc cells; MXH10/Mo/lpr mice). Results: Therapeutic response was observed in mice treated by all strategies with α-CTLA4 mAb. However, response was erratic in mice administered α-CTLA4 mAb to tumor-free LN through LDDS or intraperitoneally. Strong and fairly consistent therapeutic response was observed upon local delivery of α-CTLA4 mAb through LDDS to tumor-harboring LN. Additionally, incidence of complete response, as indicated by the total-eradication of tumor by the pre-determined experimental endpoint was observed in 66.67% of mice treated by the administration of α-CTLA4 mAb to tumor-harboring LN as opposed to only 33.33% and 28.67% in mice treated by administration of α-CTLA4 mAb to the tumor-free LN or intraperitoneally. Furthermore, treatment using LDDS to tumor-bearing LN was also found to prevent metastases to liver and lung and significantly prolong survival. In stark contrast, treatment through LDDS to tumor-free LN or i.p., worsened survival as opposed to control group, likely due to the onset of immune related adverse events. In keeping with the same, body weight and spleen weights for the i.p. group, which had the worst survival amongst all the experimental groups, was found to drop. Conclusions: Administration strategy is a critical variable that affects ICI therapy associated anti-tumor response and toxicity in the context of metastatic LNs. A finales de la década de 1920, Le Corbusier mostró un interés por la vestimenta moderna femenina, hasta el punto de proclamar que de la revolución vestimentaria dependía la revolución de la arquitectura. Esta afirmación causa sorpresa, porque las teorías de la arquitectura moderna y el diseño han rechazado o soslayado la cuestión vestimentaria. Por lo demás, la idea de Le Corbusier ha sido considerada ambigua. ¿Cómo, por qué, en pleno avance industrial, en la era de la máquina, basar la arquitectura en la vestimenta ? Sus escritos diversos sobre la cuestión, desde los años 1910 hasta la década de 1940, permiten apreciar dos puntos de vista opuestos que se hacen eco de las controversias y de las divergencias ideológicas características de esa época: estándar contra individualidad, teoría protética contra teoría rítmica. Es así como, concentrándonos en un diseño de vestimenta que esbozó en los años cincuenta, ponemos de manifiesto su posición positivamente paradójica y en qué medida esta es adecuada para «revestir» la teoría –su teoría–, así como ciertas teorías que le convocan.

Este artículo aborda aspectos de la trayectoria de la educadora Carolina Ribeiro (1892-1982), destacando su formación en el magisterio, la carrera de profesora y dirigente de la enseñanza paulista y las relaciones que mantuvo con la Iglesia Católica, en el proceso de estructuración nacional de la enseñanza en Brasil, en las décadas de 1930 y 1940. Dirigente de la Escuela Normal de San Pablo en el período de 1939 a 1948 y primera mujer en asumir el cargo de Secretaria de Educación de ese estado en 1955; Ribeiro construyó, a lo largo de su carrera, una estrecha cooperación con grupos de orientación católica, en especial la Liga del Profesorado Católico de San Pablo (LPC), participando activamente de una amplia disputa por el control ideológico del profesorado (Chagas de Carvalho, 1989). Lideró movimientos en defensa de la memoria de la educación paulista, que fue modelo para las reformas implementadas por otros Estados brasileros en la década de 1920 y mantuvo el tono crítico de las reformas que buscaban la estructuración del Estado nacional y amenazaban la hegemonía política y educacional de San Pablo en este contexto. El objetivo del enfoque en su trayectoria, por lo tanto, es recuperar discursos y prácticas no siempre convergentes, cuyos contenidos son resignificados en su recorrido, de acuerdo con las condiciones objetivas (Bourdieu, 1996) y con las aproximaciones y los diálogos que estableció teniendo en cuenta la amplia repercusión nacional que alcanzó tal modelo de enseñanza.

Early season infestations of adult tuber flea beetles, Epitrix tuberis Gentner, usually are concentrated at the edges of potato fields, and it generally has been assumed that they move into potato fields from the outside inward. This edge-effect suggests that tuber flea beetles overwinter outside potato fields, and other species of flea beetles have been reported to behave similarly (Wolfenbarger 1940; Dominick 1971; Burgess 1981). This may not be true of E. tuberis, however. Hoerner and Gillette (1928), in Colorado, noted that potatoinfesting flea beetles [probably E. cucurneris (Harris), E. subcrinata (Lec.), or E. tuberis] often congregated under piles of old potato vines in potato fields, and Hill and Tate (1942) observed flea beetles feeding on cull tubers in a potato field after harvest. These observations suggest, but do not confirm, that some flea beetles including E. tuberis may remain in harvested potato fields during winter.

Il y a plusieurs années, l’auteur de cet article faisait l’acquisition, chez un brocanteur de Sherbrooke, d’albums photos datant des années 1920-1930, sans références à leur provenance. L’intérêt du fonds venait de son potentiel documentaire en dépit du fait qu’il était sorti de son contexte d’origine. Le fonds contenait des images montrant des gens dans l’exercice d’activités diverses, aussi bien techniques, sportives, sociales que culturelles, mais aussi des lieux (principalement Québec, le lac Saint-Joseph, Sherbrooke et le lac Magog), des sites, un environnement construit et paysager, des moyens de transports, des outils et des objets usuels. Genest tente de montrer qu’il est possible, à partir d’une lecture attentive des images, de les faire parler suffisamment pour en tirer des informations relatives à l’époque, au milieu social, aux activités et aux valeurs des principaux personnages qui y figurent, jusqu’à reconstituer des pans de leur vie sur la seule base de leur pouvoir d’évocation.

Abstract:

Age, height and diameter distribution as well as height and diameter growth were studied in ten mesic black spruce stands originating from advance growth, forty years after cutting. All sampled stands showed a negative exponential type age structure. The majority of the trees were of layer origin established in the mature stands that were cut in the 1930's or 1940's. The sampled trees were generally distributed among numerous height and diameter classes. According to stem analysis, the ten sampled stands can be separated into two distinct groups based on their height growth performance, following the drainage pattern. Mean annual height and diameter increments were comparable to those described in yield tables for natural black spruce stands. Sites with adequate stocking and density should thus give good volumes. Stands of advance growth origin have the advantage of possessing some trees with a certain height immediately after the cutting. However, they are generally highly variable in diameter and height classes which can be an inconvenience in wood processing

El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar la fenomenología de la donación de Jean- Luc Marion y plantear algunas críticas de carácter fenomenológico-hermenéutico. En primer lugar, se quiere mostrar cómo las interpretaciones que el pensador francés elabora de la donación en el «primer Heidegger» están claramente influenciadas por la filosofía del así llamado «segundo Heidegger» y, por tanto, pierden de vista el trasfondo hermenéutico que anima toda investigación heideggeriana de la década de 1920. En segundo lugar, se pondrá de manifiesto cómo una fenomenología de la donación que reconduzca toda manifestación al puro darse de los fenómenos responde más a una problemática de carácter teorético-metafísico que a un planteamiento propiamente fenomenológico o hermenéutico.

A taxonomic revision and a key to the pseudoscorpion species of Neobisium Chamberlin, 1930―so far attributed to the subgenus Ommatoblothrus Beier, 1956―from Corsica, Sardinia and mainland Italy are provided. Polar bibliophiles, librarians and readers will be familiar with the three handsome facsimile volumes of the first Antarctic newspaper, published in 1907 and 1914 and edited in turn by E. Shackleton, L.C. Bernacchi and A. Cherry-Garrard during the National Antarctic Expedition, 1901–1904 and the British Antarctic Expedition 1910–1913. These expeditions were led by Captain R.F. Scott R.N. in Discovery and Terra Nova respectively. From S.Y. Discovery, beset for two winters in the ice of McMurdo Sound were made the first extensive sledge journeys into the interior of the Antarctic continent, including the great ice sheet or plateau. These were further prolonged, following Shackleton's Nimrod expedition, while the pursuit of science during both Scott expeditions led to the publication in London of two monumental sets of scientific and geographical results, plus new charts and maps.

Abstract:

In this article, I study the stylistic features of Japanese cinematography of the middle of the twentieth century, which was introduced to European critics and the general public in the 1950s. The cinematic style of the analyzed Japanese films is associated with the concept of visual complexity, borrowed from Le Fanu’s book Mizoguchi and Japan (Le Fanu, 2018). One of the manifestations of visual complexity in the films of Kenji Mizoguchi, YasujiroOzu, early Akira Kurosawa and other Japanese film directors of the ’50s, is that the viewer, experiencing anxiety and disharmony, is forced to build up in his mind an image, that is difficult to identify in the first moments of its screen existence, to regognizable objectivity. Another interesting aspect of visual complexity is the motionless long shots taken by a camera distanced from the object of observation—seemingly impassive, but at the same time bringing the viewer to a high degree of tension. These manifestations of visual complexity in Japanese cinema are compared to the outwardly similar forms created in the same period or somewhat later by such European film modernists and representatives of the American New Hollywood as Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrei Tarkovsky, Stanley Kubrick and, mainly, Robert Bresson. However, analyzing primarily Kenji Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu Monogatari (“Tales of Moonlight and Rain”) and relying on the article A Lesson in Japanese Film Style by André Bazin and works by Jean-Luc Godard, Mark Le Fanu and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, I show that, in Bazin’s words, Japanese films do not so much give a sense of the style of the work that characterizes their authors as they express the anonymous “artistic spirit of a distinct civilization” (as cited in Le Fanu, 2018, p. 179). This means that Japanese cinema of the period under study contains artistic traditions that were formed and developed long before the birth of cinema to a much more pronounced degree than European and American auteur cinema. In particular, Japanese cinematography is obviously influenced by theatrical traditions, primarily Noh, the ancient traditions of making folding screens, tapestries, and erotic miniatures. All this, in turn, is a part of Japanese mentality rather than of Japanese intellectual culture. And this largely distinguishes Japanese cinema from formally similar European and American film modernism, predetermined not so much by mental factors and old cultural traditions as by contemporary intellectual discourses, primarily existentialist and Christian-personalist philosophy.

Abstract:

Spatial evolution can be traced by land-use change (LUC), which is a frontier issue in the field of geography. Using the limited areas of Koh Chang in Thailand as the research case, this study analyzed the simulation of its spatial evolution from a multi-scenario perspective on the basis of the 1900–2020 thematic mapper/operational land imager (TM/OLI) remote sensing data obtained through the transfer matrix model, and modified LUC and the dynamic land-use change model (Dyna-CLUE). Over the past 30 years, the expansion of recreation areas and urban and built-up land has been very high (2944.44% and 486.99%, respectively) along the western coast of Koh Chang, which replaced the original mangrove forests, orchards, and communities. Logistic regression analysis of important variables affecting LUC revealed that population density variables and coastal plain topography significantly affected LUC, which showed strong β coefficients prominently in the context of a coastal tourist city. The results of the LUC and logistic regression analyses were used to predict future LUCs in the Dyna-CLUE model to simulate 2050 land-use in three scenarios: (1) natural evolution scenario, where a large patch expansion of agricultural land extends along the edge of the entire forest boundary around the island, particularly the southwestern areas of the island that should be monitored; (2) reserved area protection scenario, where the boundary of the conservation area is incorporated into the model, enabling forest preservation in conjunction with tourism development; and (3) recreation area growth scenario, where the southern area is the most susceptible to change at the new road crossing between Khlong Kloi village to Salak Phet village, and where land-use of the recreation area type is expanding. The model-projected LUC maps provide insights into possible changes under multiple pathways, which could help local communities, government agencies, and stakeholders jointly allocate resource planning in a systematic way, so that the development of various infrastructures to realize the potential impact on the environment is a sustainable coastal tourist city development.
