Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of different enamel preparation procedures and compare light cure composite (LCC) and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) on the bond strength of orthodontic metal tubes rebonded to the enamel. Twenty human molars were divided into two groups (n=10). Tubes were bonded using LCC (Transbond XT) in group 1 and RMGI (Fuji Ortho LC) in group 2. The tubes in each group were bonded following manufacturers’ instructions (experiment I) and then debonded using testing machine. Then, the same brackets were sandblasted and rebonded twice. Before the first rebonding, the enamel was cleaned using carbide bur (experiment II) and before second rebonding, it was cleaned using carbide bur and soda blasted (experiment III). Mann–Whitney and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests showed no significant difference between RMGI and LCC bond strengths in case of normal bonding and rebonding, when enamel was cleaned using carbide bur before rebonding. Enamel soda blasting before rebonding significantly increased RMGI tensile bond strength value compared to LLC (p<0.05). LCC and RMGI (especially RMGI) provide sufficient bond strengths for rebonding of molar tubes, when residual adhesive from previous bonding is removed and enamel soda blasted.

Abstract:
Iron-related disorders of the liver can result in serious health conditions, such as liver cirrhosis. Evidence on the role of modifiable lifestyle factors like nutrition in liver iron storage is lacking. Thus, we aimed to assess the association of habitual diet with liver iron content (LIC). We investigated 303 participants from the population-based KORA-MRI study who underwent whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dietary habits were evaluated using repeated 24 h food lists and a food frequency questionnaire. Sex-stratified multiple linear regression models were applied to quantify the association between nutrition variables of interest and LIC, adjusting for liver fat content (LFC), energy intake, and age. Mean age of participants was 56.4 ± 9.0 years and 44.2% were female. Mean LIC was 1.23 ± 0.12 mg/g dry weight, with higher values in men than in women (1.26 ± 0.13 and 1.20 ± 0.10 mg/g, p < 0.001). Alcohol intake was positively associated with LIC (men: β = 1.94; women: β = 4.98, p-values < 0.03). Significant negative associations with LIC were found for fiber (β = −5.61, p < 0.001) and potassium (β = −0.058, p = 0.034) for female participants only. Furthermore, LIC was highly correlated with liver fat content in both sexes. Our findings suggests that there are sex-specific associations of habitual dietary intake and LIC. Alcohol, fiber, and potassium may play a considerable role in liver iron metabolism.

Abstract:
Local mate competition (LMC) occurs when male relatives compete for mating opportunities, and this may favour the evolution of female-biased sex allocation. LMC theory is among the most well developed and empirically supported topics in behavioural ecology, clarifies links between kin selection, group selection and game theory, and provides among the best quantitative evidence for Darwinian adaptation in the natural world. Two striking invariants arise from this body of work: the number of sons produced by each female is independent of both female fecundity and also the rate of female dispersal. Both of these invariants have stimulated a great deal of theoretical and empirical research. Here, we show that both of these invariants break down when variation in female fecundity and limited female dispersal are considered in conjunction. Specifically, limited dispersal of females following mating leads to local resource competition (LRC) between female relatives for breeding opportunities, and the daughters of high-fecundity mothers experience such LRC more strongly than do those of low-fecundity mothers. Accordingly, high-fecundity mothers are favoured to invest relatively more in sons, while low-fecundity mothers are favoured to invest relatively more in daughters, and the overall sex ratio of the population sex ratio becomes more female biased as a result.

Abstract:
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity; however the treatment approaches are still unsatisfactory. We used a luciferase-transfected animal model to evaluate the therapeutic effects of curcumin. Human oral squamous cell carcinoma SAS cell line was stably transfected with luc gene, named SAS/luc cells. For the in vivo study, they were inoculated subcutaneously to 6-week-old male NOD/SCID mice which were separated into four groups for intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of curcumin: control, daily with 35 mg/kg, 70 mg/kg every 2 days, and 100 mg/kg every 3 days. We applied SAS/luc bearing animal model and bioluminescent imaging (BLI) to study the inhibition effect of curcumin on tumor growth. The cytotoxic effect of curcumin on SAS/luc cells was mainly at G2/M phase and a significant dose dependent increase of the apoptotic SAS/luc cells as represented by sub-G1 phase was shown. Therapeutic efficacy evaluated by both caliper assay and BLI showed a significant difference between curcumin-treated mice and the controls (p < 0.01). The significant inhibition effects of curcumin on the proliferation and the growth of human OSCC are observed both in vitro and in vivo. No significant body weight change (i.e. within 20%) was observed in all SAS/luc-bearing mice with or without curcumin treatment. This SAS/luc human OSCC bearing animal model combined with multimodalities of molecular imaging permits a sensitive and non-invasive approach to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy in vivo.

Abstract:
This essay shows that Jean-Luc Nancy's reconceptualization of corporeality in such texts as L'Intrus and Corpus can be an important ally to feminist theories of body. I introduce Nancy's ontology and argue that his rejection of the unified, integrated body of humanist discourses in favor of dis-integrated bodies constituted by multiple alterities and his consequent reinterpretation of body as a “being-exscribed” begin the task of thinking bodies beyond traditional dualisms and their ahistorical and rationalist frameworks. I then address three potential criticisms of Nancy's work and suggest that though there may be reasons to move cautiously in adopting the framework he provides, his work harbors resources directly beneficial to critiques of prevailing forms of gender normativity.Quel étrange moi!—Jean-Luc Nancy, Corpus

Abstract:
Objective – To determine the extent to which knowledge is currently addressed by the Library of Congress (LCC), Dewey Decimal (DDC), and Universal Decimal (UDC) classification systems. Design – Comparative analysis of the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems using Zin’s 10 Pillars of Knowledge. Setting – The Faculty of Philosophy and Science at a Brazilian university. Subjects – Forty one subject-related classes and 386 subclasses from the first two levels of the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems. Methods – To evaluate the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems, the researchers employed the 10 Pillars of Knowledge, a “hierarchical knowledge tree” developed by the lead author of this study (p. 878). According to the authors, the 10 Pillars of Knowledge seek to illustrate relationships between fields of knowledge while capturing their breadth. The first level of the Pillars consists of the following categories: Knowledge, Supernatural, Matter and Energy, Space and Earth, Nonhuman Organizations, Body and Mind, Society, Thought and Art, Technology, and History. Each of the 10 Pillars is further subdivided, resulting in a four level hierarchical structure of 76 categories. Of the 76 categories, 55 are unique subject areas. A selection of subject-based classes and subclasses from the first two levels of the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems were then mapped to the relevant subclasses within the Pillars. Analysis was limited to the first two levels of LCC, DDC, and UDC, except for the LCC categories of BF and BL where further subclasses were analyzed. Classes or subclasses in LCC, DDC, or UDC that were not subject based (for example, those based on publication type) were excluded from the study. In total, 41 main classes and 386 subclasses from LLC, DDC, and UDC were categorized using the 10 Pillars. Main Results – The LLC, DDC, and UDC systems were deemed to be complete and systematic in their coverage of only three of the 10 Pillars: Matter and Energy, Thought and Art, and History. This means that there was at least one class or subclass in each of the three systems that corresponded to the subclasses in these pillars. The remaining seven pillars were only partially covered by the three systems to varying degrees. For example, the coverage of religion in LCC and DDC show evidence of a bias towards Christianity and incomplete coverage of other faiths. In addition to the lack of completeness in terms of subject coverage, the researchers found inconsistencies and problems with how relationships between subjects were illustrated by the systems. For example, botany should be a subclass of biology, but the subjects occupy the same level in the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems. Researchers also noted cases where subclasses on the same level were not mutually exclusive e.g., the BR (Christianity) and BS (The Bible) subclasses in LCC. Overall, LLC performed slightly better than DDC or UDC, covering 47 of the 55 unique subject categories in the 10 Pillars. It was followed by UDC with 44 out of 55, and DDC with 43 out of 55. Some of the 55 unique subject categories in the 10 Pillars system were not represented by any of the systems: 3 subclasses under Society (Society at Large – Area Based, Social Groups – Age, and Social Groups – Ethnicity), 2 under Technology (Technologies – Materials and Technologies – Processes), and 1 under Foundations (Methodology). Conclusion – The researchers conclude that none of the three major classification systems analyzed provides complete and systematic coverage of the world of knowledge, and call for the library community to move to new systems, such as the 10 Pillars of Knowledge.

Abstract:
Mixed-lineage leukemia (MLL)/AF4-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is associated with poor prognosis even after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). The resistance to graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects may be responsible for the poor effect of allo-HSCT on MLL-AF4-positive ALL. Cytotoxic effector mechanisms mediated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) was reported to contribute to the GVL effect. We reported previously that MLL/AF4-positive ALL shows resistance to TNF-a, which is the main factor in GVL effect, by upregulation of S100A6 expression followed by interference with the p53-caspase 8-caspase 3 pathway in vitro. We examined whether inhibition of S100A6 can induce an effective GVL effect on MLL/AF4-positive ALL in a mouse model. To examine the long-term effects of inhibition of S100A6,MLL/AF4-positive ALL cell lines (SEM) transduced with lentiviral vectors expressing both S100A6 siRNA and luciferase (SEM-Luc-S100A6 siRNA) were produced. SEM-Luc-S100A6 siRNA cells and SEM-Luc-control siRNA cells were injected into groups of five SCID mice (1×107/body). After confirmation of engraftment of SEM cells by in vivo imaging, the mice in each group were injected with 4.8×107 human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Although there were no significant differences between the serum concentrations of human-TNF-a after injection of human PBMCs of SEM-Luc-S100A6 siRNA injected mice and those of SEM-Luc-control siRNA injected mice (P=0.95), SEM-Luc-S100A6 siRNA-injected mice showed significantly longer survival periods than SEM-Luc-control siRNA-injected mice (P = 0.002). SEM-Luc-S100A6 siRNA-injected mice showed significantly slower tumor growth than those injected with SEM-Luc-control siRNA (P < 0.0001). These results suggested that inhibition of S100A6 may be a promising therapeutic target for MLL/AF4-positive ALL in combination with allo-HSCT because it induce effective GVL effectson MLL/AF4-positive ALL which is resistant to GVL effects. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
This work is a film commentary, based on the critical analysis method introduced by Walter Benjamin. The starting point is an essay written in 1941, "About the concept of history", in which he puts forward a certain number of points leading to redifining the position and vocation of the historian in a sociolagically, technologically and politically shattered modern context. He asks the historian to rub history up the wrong way, by holding and saving moments, by moving points of views and envisaging the meaning of this moment in History. From this basic premise, Brice Dellsperger's film, Body double (x), is cast as a manifest and specific time, model of a type of film-making. Experimental, as well as formal, it was born from the remake, a phenomenon already known in modern arts between 1990 and 2000. For Body double (x) is a copy, frame for frame and word for word, of L'important c'est d'aimer (1976) directed by A. Zulawski. In this commentary, I use Benjamin's concepts : the thing content and the truth content. The thing content corresponds to the film material analysis, that is, the formal analysis of all the constituents of the picture, as well as the process, peculiar to the re-directing of the original movie. The truth content corresponds to the philosophical, historical and political angle on the film and performative process. The film, as a remake, questions about Copy and Original notions on a relational mode. Finally, by focusing looks on the body of one unique actor, Jean-Luc Verna, it restores an aesthetic and ethical link between the human figure and its representation

Carnal transcendence and sexual difference -- An amorous exchange -- Angels playing with placentas -- Fluid subjects -- Poetics -- Oneiric spaces -- Conclusion.
Carnal transcendence imagines a world in which the carnal has the weight and value of transcendence, and the divine is as liveable and readily evoked as the carnal. Carnal transcendence offers a means of thinking through difference in the work of Luce Irigaray, who asks: "why and how long ago did God withdraw from carnal love?" (1991a, p 16). This thesis argues that Irigaray enables her readers to explore the relationship between carnality, transcendence and difference, but resists elaborating it in her work. Carnal transcendence as difference risks remaining an exercise in rhetoric, rather than the transformative and creative philosophy that Irigaray imagines. -- Irigaray's resistance to the carnal is evident in her arguments for sexual difference, which offers our "salvation" if we think it through, and heralds "a new age of thought, art, poetry, and language: the creation of a new poetics" (1993a, p 5). Note the language of transcendence used here. When considered in the light of carnal transcendence, sexual difference imagines a differently sexed culture. This thesis argues that Irigaray's writing is contradictory on this point: it articulates the plurality of women's sexuality, but emphatically excludes theories of sex and gender that emphasise multiplicity. This thesis challenges these limitations by exploring the possibilities of the "other" couple in Irigaray's writing-mother and daughter - for thinking through carnal transcendence as difference. -- This thesis not only explicates a theoretical model for carnal transcendence as difference; it also attempts to put into practice a poetics - a playful rewriting of theory. This celebrates the carnality of Irigaray's writing - evident in her complex imagery of the two lips, mucus, the placenta and angels-and enables an exploration of the philosophical space of the "new poetics" that Irigaray is attempting to engender.

Tapia, Ribas Yuri. "Un piloto en su nave. Estudio sobre la unión del alma y el cuerpo como problema fundamental de la modernidad (de René Descartes a Jean-Luc Nancy)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/662850.

Abstract:
This dissertation, "A pilot in his ship". The study of the union of soul and body as the fundamental problem of modernity (from Rene Descartes to Jean-Luc Nancy), aims to offer the current state of the question of the philosophical problem of the union between the soul and the body considered as a fundamental problem of modernity. In order to achieve this objective we have formulated the following hypothesis: All Modern thought is essentially the attempt to restore, ground, or reformulate the union of soul and body. The perplexity of the trust of the human body within the present thought and the meeting of the philosophy of Jean-Luc Nancy, leads me us to formulate the hypothesis of my our work, which is already outlined in Heidegger. In both cases, we find a critique of the thought of subjectivity that is confined to the more general problem of the union of soul and body. This problem that inaugurates Descartes, conforms the development of the modern thought, but according to Nancy, not from a traditional conception. Constant attempts to solve the problem of the union of soul and body are due to the forgetting of its foundation as a problem of excessive joining rather than as an unequal substantial relationship. After analysing the subject of the union of the soul and the body in the work of Descartes, we can verify that the problem of the union of the soul and the body is fundamentally due on the one hand, to the theologization of Cartesian philosophy, and on the other hand due to a partial conception of Idealism. The problem of this union becomes recalcitrant and the solution, in the late nineteenth century and during the twentieth century, establishes the point of gravity in the discourses on the . body. From this perspective they are presented to Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Merleau-Ponty. Finally, the analysis of Nancy's proposal leads us to think the body from another metaphysical perspective that is able to take care of the problem without seeking the restitution of the union, but facing it from its own dislocated and convulsive "nature".

Abstract:
This chapter distinguishes between recent disciplinary swings to foreground the body, in a phenomenology of experience, and the more specific focus on how musical works write the body. Just as Mallarmé sees the dancer as an écriture corporelle, so music ‘after Debussy’ can be understood in a similar way. Debussy’s piano Préludes (Book 1) are examined in detail for their re-writing of the body. The work of Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Luc Nancy, Michel Serres, and Jean-Luc Marion are explored in terms of a phenomenology that places the perceiving body centre stage but read as a development in philosophical thought that was already being explored through art and music.

Abstract:
RE-SC-LUK obtained from recomoinant b. con Bacteria showed a molecular mass similar to that of recombinant two-chain LUK (RE-TC-LUK) as judged from SDS-PAGE. By “Western“ blot analysis immunoreactivity of RE-SC-LUK was observed with monoclonal antibodies directed against the B chain but not with those against the A1 chain of urokinase. N-terminal sequence analysis c RE-SC-LUK showed identity to the A, chain of RE-TC_LUK and provided evidence for its single-chain nature, i.e. integrity of the Lys-Ile bond which is split in TC-UK. In all other respects structural identity of RE-SC-LUK and RE-TC-LUK was demonstrated by fingerprinting of fragments. Similar to recombinant pro-urokinase (RE-SCU-PA), RE-SC-LUK exhibits only marginal amidolytic activity, which is greatly enhanced by treatment with plasmin, but considerable fibrinolytic activity in a fibrin agar plate test. Thus, RE-SC-LUK is characterized as a fragment (residues 136 -411) of RE-SCU-PA, which lacks the “growth factor” and “kringle” domains. Moreover further evidence is provided that a free N-terminus of the B chain is essential for amidolytic but not for fibrinolytic activity of urokinase in more complex systems.

Abstract:
The Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC) is a lever-powered, wheelchair-based mobility aid designed specifically for use in the developing world. Its drivetrain optimally converts upper body power in a wide range of terrains, giving the LFC operational capabilities that extend beyond those of currently available mobility products. In this work we present the design and analysis process used to create an LFC for trial in East Africa. All of the moving parts in the LFC are made from bicycle components and the entire chair can be fabricated without any machining processes. This allows the LFC to be manufactured for the same price as existing mobility aids and repaired anywhere in the developing world. Eight prototypes were produced in Kenya during August 2009, with six distributed to mobility aid users throughout East Africa. After four months of testing, the subject-averaged propulsion efficiency using the LFC was 20% greater than that of existing mobility products. Performance results and feedback from the subjects indicate that the LFC is ideally suited for active wheelchair users who require the seating and postural support of a wheelchair, and who desire to travel on rough terrain under their own power. Test subjects’ input was also used to codify future improvements to the LFC design, including narrowing the stance of the chair and lowering the rider’s center of gravity.

Abstract:
This work presents the dynamical modelling of a flying multibody system. We consider a quadrirotor Helicopter composed of flexible and rigid components. We use the Lagrangian approach to define the equations governing the motion. Deformation modes are used to represent elastic deformation of the substructure relative to a body reference frame. The dynamic model of the whole body interconnected by links is made taking into account the inertial coupling between the rigid body motion and the deformation. The numerical application is related to the quadrirotor XSF developed in the LSC (Laboratory of Complex Systems).

Abstract:
Mobility aids that are currently available in developing countries do not fully meet users’ needs. People require a device that is maneuverable within the home and that can travel long distances on rough roads. To address this problem, we have designed the Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC), a wheelchair-based mobility aid capable of navigating virtually any terrain by optimally utilizing upper body power for propulsion through a variable-speed lever drivetrain. The lever system achieves a 4:1 change in mechanical advantage, equating to leverage that ranges from 0.42X to 1.65X a standard wheelchair hand rim. In comparative trials, the LFC demonstrated capabilities that far exceed those of any mobility aid currently available in the developing world; it was able to cruise on smooth surfaces at 2m/s (5mph), climb muddy, grassy hills with a 1:3 slope, and navigate terrain with a coefficient of rolling resistance as high as 0.48. This operational flexibility should make the LFC usable on any terrain, from rural walking paths to tight indoor confines, and greatly increase the mobility of people with disabilities in developing countries. The LFC may also be attractive to wheelchair users in developed countries, as its performance breadth exceeds that of currently available products.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of autoclave curing process variables on the bond strength between film adhesive and polycarbonate adherends. Bond strength is measured in terms of the tensile shear load transfer capacity (LTC). Studied variables include cure temperature, cure pressure and their respective rates as well as the duration of cure time. Test coupons are made of two layers’ polycarbonate lexan adherends that are autoclave-bonded using aliphatic polyether film adhesive (Huntsman PE399). The relative significance of variables and variable combinations are investigated for their effect on the bond strength. Experimental test data shows interaction between autoclave variable cure temperature in combination with cure time, temp ramp rate and pressure ramp rate have significant effect on bond strength and failure mode.
