Ce travail est un commentaire d'œuvre, inspiré de la méthode d'analyse critique instruite par Walter Benjamin. Le point de départ est un essai écrit en 1941, "Sur le concept d'histoire" dans lequel il avance un certain nombre de points conduisant à redéfinir la place et la vocation de l'historien dans un contexte moderne, socialement, technologiquement et politiquement, bouleversé. Il demande à l'historien de brosser à rebours le poil "trop lisse" de l'histoire, soit de bloquer et de sauver des moments, de déplacer les points de vue et d'envisager la signifiance de ce moment pour l'ensemble de histoire. A partir de ce postulat, le film de B. Dellsperger, Body double (x), est mis en perspective comme temps particulier et manifeste, exemplaire d'un certain type de cinéma. Expérimental, formel, il est directement issu du remake, un phénomène que connurent les arts contemporains entre 1990 et 2000. Car Body double (x) est une copie, plan à plan et mot à mot, de L'important c’est d’aimer (1976) réalisé par A. Zulawski. Dans ce commentaire, les concepts benjaminiens de teneur chosale et teneur de vérité sont pratiqués. La teneur chosale correspond à l'analyse matériologique du film : à l'analyse formelle des constituants de l'image, de l'ensemble du processus propre à la remise en scène du film original. La teneur de vérité correspond à la mise en perspective philosophique, historique et politique du processus performatif et filmique. Le film, en tant que remake, questionne les notions de copie et d'original sur un mode relationnel. Enfin, en concentrant les regards sur le corps d'un unique acteur, Jean-Luc Verna, il rétablit un rapport d'ordre esthétique et éthique entre la figure humaine et sa représentationThis work is a film commentary, based on the critical analysis method introduced by Walter Benjamin. The starting point is an essay written in 1941, "About the concept of history", in which he puts forward a certain number of points leading to redifining the position and vocation of the historian in a sociolagically, technologically and politically shattered modern context. He asks the historian to rub history up the wrong way, by holding and saving moments, by moving points of views and envisaging the meaning of this moment in History. From this basic premise, Brice Dellsperger's film, Body double (x), is cast as a manifest and specific time, model of a type of film-making. Experimental, as well as formal, it was born from the remake, a phenomenon already known in modern arts between 1990 and 2000. For Body double (x) is a copy, frame for frame and word for word, of L'important c'est d'aimer (1976) directed by A. Zulawski. In this commentary, I use Benjamin's concepts : the thing content and the truth content. The thing content corresponds to the film material analysis, that is, the formal analysis of all the constituents of the picture, as well as the process, peculiar to the re-directing of the original movie. The truth content corresponds to the philosophical, historical and political angle on the film and performative process. The film, as a remake, questions about Copy and Original notions on a relational mode. Finally, by focusing looks on the body of one unique actor, Jean-Luc Verna, it restores an aesthetic and ethical link between the human figure and its representation

Carnal transcendence and sexual difference -- An amorous exchange -- Angels playing with placentas -- Fluid subjects -- Poetics -- Oneiric spaces -- Conclusion.
Carnal transcendence imagines a world in which the carnal has the weight and value of transcendence, and the divine is as liveable and readily evoked as the carnal. Carnal transcendence offers a means of thinking through difference in the work of Luce Irigaray, who asks: "why and how long ago did God withdraw from carnal love?" (1991a, p 16). This thesis argues that Irigaray enables her readers to explore the relationship between carnality, transcendence and difference, but resists elaborating it in her work. Carnal transcendence as difference risks remaining an exercise in rhetoric, rather than the transformative and creative philosophy that Irigaray imagines. -- Irigaray's resistance to the carnal is evident in her arguments for sexual difference, which offers our "salvation" if we think it through, and heralds "a new age of thought, art, poetry, and language: the creation of a new poetics" (1993a, p 5). Note the language of transcendence used here. When considered in the light of carnal transcendence, sexual difference imagines a differently sexed culture. This thesis argues that Irigaray's writing is contradictory on this point: it articulates the plurality of women's sexuality, but emphatically excludes theories of sex and gender that emphasise multiplicity. This thesis challenges these limitations by exploring the possibilities of the "other" couple in Irigaray's writing-mother and daughter - for thinking through carnal transcendence as difference. -- This thesis not only explicates a theoretical model for carnal transcendence as difference; it also attempts to put into practice a poetics - a playful rewriting of theory. This celebrates the carnality of Irigaray's writing - evident in her complex imagery of the two lips, mucus, the placenta and angels-and enables an exploration of the philosophical space of the "new poetics" that Irigaray is attempting to engender.

La tesis doctoral que se presenta a continuación pretende ofrecer el estado de la cuestión actual del problema filosófico de la unión entre el alma y el cuerpo considerado como un problema fundamental de la modernidad.
Para poder lograr este objetivo hemos formulado la siguiente hipótesis:
Todo el pensamiento moderno es esencialmente el intento de restitución, fundamentación o reformulación de la unión del alma y el cuerpo.
La perplejidad ante la confianza del cuerpo humane dentro del pensamiento actual y el encuentro de la filosofía de Jean-Luc Nancy, nos conduce a formular la hipótesis de nuestro trabajo, la cual se encuentra ya esbozada en Heidegger quien en su segundo volumen de su Nietzsche, suscribe la idea que toda metafísica moderna ha tratado de privilegiar el alma, conciencia o espiritu, el cuerpo o ha buscado un equilibrio aceptable entre éstos. En ambos casos encontramos una crítica al pensamiento de la subjetividad que queda circunscrita al problema más general de la unión del alma y el cuerpo. Este problema que inaugura Descartes, a la hora de aplicar la regla de la distinción entre la res extensa y la res cogitans conforma el desarrollo del pensamiento moderno. No obstante, según Nancy el problema fundamental no está en la concepción tradicional que ha desarrollado la Filosofía, ya sea por descifrar un nexo oculto, una preponderancia no vista en el discurso o un error en la demostración. Los intentos constantes por resolver el problema de la unión del alma y el cuerpo se deben al olvido de su fundación como un problema de juntura excesiva antes que como una relación sustancial desigual. El olvido del caracter esencialmente convulso de la unión vuelve imposible la tarea de la Filosofía de pensarnos más allá de un modelo de subjetividad, la cual busca la conciliación y la armonía.This dissertation, "A pilot in his ship". The study of the union of soul and body as the fundamental problem of modernity (from Rene Descartes to Jean-Luc Nancy), aims to offer the current state of the question of the philosophical problem of the union between the soul and the body considered as a fundamental problem of modernity. In order to achieve this objective we have formulated the following hypothesis: All Modern thought is essentially the attempt to restore, ground, or reformulate the union of soul and body. The perplexity of the trust of the human body within the present thought and the meeting of the philosophy of Jean-Luc Nancy, leads me us to formulate the hypothesis of my our work, which is already outlined in Heidegger. In both cases, we find a critique of the thought of subjectivity that is confined to the more general problem of the union of soul and body. This problem that inaugurates Descartes, conforms the development of the modern thought, but according to Nancy, not from a traditional conception. Constant attempts to solve the problem of the union of soul and body are due to the forgetting of its foundation as a problem of excessive joining rather than as an unequal substantial relationship. After analysing the subject of the union of the soul and the body in the work of Descartes, we can verify that the problem of the union of the soul and the body is fundamentally due on the one hand, to the theologization of Cartesian philosophy, and on the other hand due to a partial conception of Idealism. The problem of this union becomes recalcitrant and the solution, in the late nineteenth century and during the twentieth century, establishes the point of gravity in the discourses on the . body. From this perspective they are presented to Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Merleau-Ponty. Finally, the analysis of Nancy's proposal leads us to think the body from another metaphysical perspective that is able to take care of the problem without seeking the restitution of the union, but facing it from its own dislocated and convulsive "nature".

Ce document de thèse décrit la recherche des désintégrations en trois corps des mésons beaux neutres qui contiennent un KS ou un pi 0 dans l'état final. Ces événements sont reconstruits au moyen du spectromètre LHCb installé auprès du collisionneur proton-proton LHC, sis au Cern à Genève. La phénoménologie des ces modes est riche et couvre la possibilité de mesurer tous les angles du triangle d'Unitarité de la matrice Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) qui décrit les amplitudes de transition par courant chargé faible entre quarks. Une illustration portant sur la mesure de l'angle gamma est développée dans ce document plus en détail. L'accélérateur LHC et les éléments utiles du spectromètre LHCb sont rapportés en mettant l'accent sur le travail conduit au cours de cette thèse sur l'étalonnage et l'alignement du détecteur de pieds de gerbe du calorimètre électromagnétique. Nous avons construit une méthode de calibration du détecteur au moyen de particules qui le traversent au minimum d'ionisation. Les résultats et les performances de ces calibrations sont discutées. Une méthode de discrimination des pi 0 et des photons de haute énergie est présentée, bénéficiant des mesures des caractéristiques des cascades électromagnétiques dans le PreShower et le calorimètre. Ces informations sont combinées dans une analyse multivariable. La stratégie de contrôle des performances du discriminateur directement à partir des données est discutée et cet outil est appliqué à la recherche des états finals B to hh pi 0. Une recherche similaire des modes de désintégration B{d,s} to KShh, où h peut être un pion ou un kaon chargé a été conduite. Ce mode de désintégration permet de mesurer la phase faible du mélange des mésons Bd ou Bs et la comparaison de ces déterminations avec celles extraites des modes charmonia peut permettre de mettre en évidence une phase faible au-delà du Modèle Standard dans l'amplitude de désintégration. La première étape de cette analyse consiste à établir les signaux des modes non encore observés B{s} to KShh. Ce travail exploratoire présente la première observation du mode B{s} to KSK pi.

Le travail présenté dans cette thèse concerne l’étude des désintégrations en trois corps sans quark charmé des mésons beaux neutres, dont l’état final contient un K0S. Ce travail de recherche s’est réalisé dans le cadre de l’expérience LHCb au LHC, en analysant un échantillon d’événements de 3 fb−1 collecté dans le Run I du LHC. L’analyse d’amplitude de la désintégration B0→K0Sπ+π− représente la partie principale de ce travail de thèse. La mesure des amplitudes est effectuée au moyen d’une étude du plan de Dalitz de la désintégration intégrée dans le temps sans étiquetage de la saveur de la particule belle. Nous avons mesuré les rapports d’embranchements relatives des désintégrations quasi-deux-corps à partir de cette analyse de Dalitz. Egalement, nous avons mesuré l’asymétrie CP directe des désintégrations quasi-deux-corps B0→K*+(892)π−, B0→K0*+(1430)π−, B0→K2*+(1430)π− et B0→f0(980)K0S. Nous avons observé pour la première fois l’asymétrie CP directe dans la désintégration B0→K*+(892)π− avec une signifiance supérieure à cinq déviations standard. Cette mesure est en accord avec la moyenne mondiale, avec une précision amélioréeStudies of charmless three-body decays of the neutral B mesons with a K0S in the final state are presented in this thesis. The analyses are performed with the full statistics recorded by the LHCb spectrometer during the Run I of the LHC. The amplitude analysis of the decay B0→K0Sπ+π− represents the main part of this thesis analysis. A time-integrated untagged Dalitz-Plot analysis of the decay is performed. The fit fractions of the quasi-two-body decays are obtained. Likewise, the direct CP asymmetries of the quasi-two-body decays B0→K*+(892)π−, B0→K0*+(1430)π−, B0→K2*+(1430)π− and B0→f0(980)K0S are obtained. The largest sensitivity is obtained for ACP (B0→K*+(892)π−). This measurement is the first observation of the CP asymmetry with a significance larger then five standard deviations. The measurement is in agreement with the world average, with an improved precision

Notre travail interroge les différentes pratiques de création de Ghérasim Luca (livres-objets, albums, portfolios, plaquettes, poèmes-tracts et poèmes-affiches, récitals scéniques et télévisuels, cubomanies, dessins au point) à l’aune des expériences sémiotiques qu’elles engagent. Dire des signes qu’ils sont mis en jeu, c’est insister sur la dimension matérielle et éminemment sensible des mouvements de production et de réception. La question du sens est indissociable de celle du médium, dès lors que les signes se donnent à éprouver comme corps (corps sonores, corps graphiques ou typographiques) par des corps. La notion de surgissement permet de rendre compte de cette spatialité, qui a partie liée avec des phénomènes théâtraux, ceux d’apparition et de disparition : la page blanche, la bande sonore, l’écran, le panneau de bois peint, sont autant de lieux où peut s’inventer et se déployer une pensée incarnée. Quant à la notion d’opacification, employée en linguistique pour décrire certains phénomènes métadiscursifs, elle mérite d’être réévaluée et déplacée : nous nous efforçons de passer du domaine strictement verbal à un champ plus largement sémiotique.Notre parcours s’organise en quatre étapes solidaires, qui manifestent l’intrication des approches historiques, sémiotiques, linguistiques, médiologiques, stylistiques, mais aussi scientifiques et philosophiques. La première partie consiste en une exploration des créations plastiques, graphiques, sonores, qui intègre les diverses collaborations auxquelles Ghérasim Luca a pris part en Roumanie puis en France. La deuxième partie dégage un imaginaire linguistique, nourri de diverses traditions (l’atomisme de Lucrèce, l’alchimie, la Kabbale), qui fait du vide un principe structurant, et de l’écriture un travail d’agencement. Cet imaginaire, qui relève d’une pensée de la langue dans la langue, est lui-même volontiers mis à distance : il ne s’agit pas d’adhérer à ce qui serait une théorie, mais de circuler librement entre des conceptions apparemment inconciliables. La troisième partie décrit les jeux de perturbation du sens à partir du statut tout à fait singulier accordé aux autonymes, aux néologismes et aux noms propres dans les recueils de la période française : les divers types de trouble sémiotique et l’invention d’un hors-lexique participent d’un mouvement de déstabilisation. La quatrième et dernière partie est consacrée au geste de reprise, qui se décline sous de multiples formes, parmi lesquelles on compte le collage et le détournementThis work questions the different practices of Ghérasim Luca (book-objects, albums, portfolios, booklets, pamphlet-poems, poster-poems, scenic and audiovisual recitals, cubomanies, drawings) in light of the semiotic experiences they initiate. Asserting that signs are at stake means insisting on the material and highly perceptible dimension of both production and reception. From the moment that signs are perceived as bodies (audible bodies, graphic and typographic bodies) by other bodies, the question of meaning is linked to the question of medium. With the notion of emergence, we can analyse spatial phenomena, linked to theatrical ones, such as appearance and disappearance : the white page, the audiotape, the screen, the wooden panels are places where an embodied thinking can arise and expand. The notion of opacification, which is used by linguists to describe metadiscursive phenomena, can be reconsidered and redefined : we try to exceed the verbal domain and to adopt a global semiotic perspective, which includes non-verbal matters.This study is composed of four interdependent parts, which show the interpenetration of historical, semiotic, linguistic, mediologic, stylistic but also scientific and philosophical approaches. The first part explores the plastic, graphic and audio creations of Ghérasim Luca, including collaborations with several artists in Romania and France. The second part identifies what we could call a linguistic imaginary, fuelled by three different traditions (Lucretius’ atomism, alchemy, Kabbalah), which considers void as a founding principle, and writing as a layout. This imaginary, which inquires the possibility of thinking about language within the language, is playfully held at a distance by Ghérasim Luca : the point is not to adopt a theory, but to circulate freely between apparently incompatible approaches. The third part describes various phenomena of meaning disruption and focuses on the specific status given to autonyms, neologisms and proper nouns in his French period : the different kinds of semiotic troubles and the invention of a lexicon beyond the lexicon take part in the destabilisation process. Dans ce travail de thèse, certaines étendues d’eaux continentales regroupant plusieurs types de système de dépôt comme les lacs, mers intérieures et lagunes ont été regroupées au sein d'un nouveau groupe de système sédimentaire mentionnés sous l'appellation de Wind-driven Water Body (WWB).Afin de caractériser l'évolution et l'enregistrement sédimentaire d'un exemple de WWB, une étude sédimentologique intégrée du bassin quaternaire du Lac Saint-Jean (Québec, Canada) a été menée à partir d'une approche intégrant géologie de terrain et imagerie géophysique très haute résolution (CHIRP 2D). A l'échelle du cortège sédimentaire, le régime glaciaire à paraglaciaire de la sédimentation et le rebond glacio-isostatique ont contrôlé au premier ordre, à la fois la succession lithologique et les architectures grandes échelles du bassin pour générer un Cortège de Régression Forcée (CRF) atypique. Au sein de ce cortège de régression forcée fini-glaciaire, une dynamique de système WWB s'est progressivement affirmée à partir de 8,5 cal. ka BP. Elle s'est exprimée par la mise en place d'une dynamique littorale importante occasionnellement associée à une circulation interne générant des courants de fonds lors d'épisodes de vents forts.Finalement, l'analyse sédimentologique du bassin du Lac Saint-Jean a permis de dégager plusieurs interprétations ayant attrait (1) à l'évolution des systèmes WWB et (2) aux séquences de déglaciation en domaine précédemment englacé. De plus, ce travail représente une contribution à l'échelle régionale pour les modalités de la dernière déglaciation du Sud-Est du QuébecIn this study, a certain number of continental enclosed basins including several depositional systems such as lakes, inland seas or lagoons have been grouped in a new sort of sedimentary system referred to as Wind driven Water Body. To characterize the sedimentary evolution and record of a WWB basin, an integrated sedimentological study has been carried out on the quaternary Saint-Jean basin (Québec, Canada) based on field onshore geology and offshore geophysics (CHIRP 2D).At the system-tract scale, the glacial to paraglacial sedimentation and the glacio-isostatic rebound controlled at first-order the lithofacies succession and large-scale architectures to generate an original Falling Stage System Tract (FSST). Within this FSST, since 8.5 cal. ka BP a WWB related sedimentary evolution overprinted the glacial to paraglacial evolution. This expressed in the form of the emplacement of an important coastal dynamics, occasionally accompanied by a lake-scale hydrodynamics at the origins of bottom currents during strong wind to storm events.Finally, the sedimentological analysis of the Saint-Jean basin brought numerous interpretations related to (1) the sedimentary evolution of WWB systems and (2) deglaciation sequences in previously glaciated domains. In addition, this work supplements the regional quaternary framework concerning the latest deglaciation evolution in southeast Quebec

Chez Platon, il oscille entre chôra, nourrice du vivant, et matrice animale qui gouverne le corps féminin Mais la chôra, n’est pas « Triton Genos » mais premier environnement de l’être qui est exproprié dès son origine. S’en suit l’errance du corps maternel fondatrice de la métaphysique. La volonté d’effacer le corps maternel est au cœur de la métaphysique définie comme haine et jalousie à l’égard de ce corps. Aristote théorise l’engendrement en soi mais inaugure la tradition de l’infériorisation des femmes due à leur matrice que la médecine gréco-‐latine entérine. Le christianisme comme « métaphysique des sexes » invente une figure du corps maternel purifié avec la Vierge Marie. Aux XVIIe et XVIIIème siècles, le sujet possède son corps et ses enfants et assombrit la dignité de la personne. Le corps maternel agonise et ce matricide dit la nouvelle économie libidinale qui perpétue l’enfouissement renouvelé de la mère. Le corps qui arrive est machine, sans organes et sans utérus. Un corps fabriqué, instrument de soi, qui célèbre la naissance sans mère. Le corps auto-‐engendré dit le phantasme masculin d’en passer sans le corps maternel. Son analyse dans la cartographie des philosophes femmes du XXème siècle, universaliste, différentialiste, queer, cyborg, est incontournable. Le point culminant de notre étude mesure les enjeux actuels des biotechnologies, phase finale de l’effacement du corps maternel puisqu’elles tendent à l’externaliser et à l’assujettir. Devant le commencement radical qu’ouvre la naissance qui se fait grâce à la chair matricielle pensante des femmes, ne faudrait-‐il pas bâtir la nouvelle métaphysique sur une ontologie de la vie basée sur l'ordre symbolique de la mère, seule issue possible pour sortir du désordre de la pensée ?This study seeks to uncover the maternal body in the history of Metaphysics. In Plato, it varies between the chora, nurse of the living and the animal matrix which rules the feminine body. However, the chora is not « triton genos » but the first environment of the being who is expropriated from its origins. The maternal body can begin to wander and Metaphysics lays on that wandering. The Will of erasing it is at the heart of Metaphysics defined as hatred and jealousy. Aristotle thinks through the Begetting in itself but also ushers in the tradition of devaluing Women’s bodies in particular their womb, which is exactly what the Greek Latine Medicine confirms. The Christianity as “Metaphysics of the Sexes” invents a purified figure of the maternal body with the Virgin Mary. With the XVII and XVIIIe centuries, the subject owns his body and his children and this darkens the Dignity of the Person. The maternal body is dying and this matricide illustrates the upcoming libidinal Economy that perpetuates the burial of the Mother. The new body is a machine, without organs and without a womb. This manufactured body, tool of the Self, celebrates the Birth without the Mother. The self-begotten body represents the male fantasy to procreate without the female body. Analysis of it in the cartography of Women Philosophers, alternately universalist, differentialist, queer, cyborg is highly needed. The climax of this study measures the actual stakes of Biotechnologies, considering them as the final step of a large and global Erasing of the maternal body in an attempt to externalise and enslave it. In front of the radical beginning that opens Birth, made possible by the female thinking matrix flesh, why not build a new metaphysics upon the Symbolic Order of the Mother, this is the only way to leave forever the original Disorder of philosophical Thinking?

La rencontre entre le cinéma et les arts du volume relève d’un principe de perméabilité. Le travail des cinéastes, qui se sont essayés à l’installation, témoigne de phénomènes d’hybridations connexes. Si le cinéma gagne l’espace d’exposition, c’est pour y retrouver les données séculaires de sa monstration. Le septième art voit dans sa déterritorialisation vers l’objet d’art tridimensionnel, l’expression réaffectée de son histoire. Le déplacement du cinéma dans le champ des œuvres d’art en volume doit donc être interrogé selon un principe de survivance. En feignant d’amortaliser les êtres qu’il capture, le cinéma trouve dans la sculpture un moyen de présentifier la mort. Dans notre travail plastique, cette entreprise passe par un procédé formel reconnaissable : le renversement. De ce geste plastique, dont nous postulons qu’il est métonymique d’une forme d’enfouissement, naît l’idée que le cinéma et la sculpture s’inscrivent tous deux dans un régime funéraire de l’artThe meeting of cinema and sculpture must be analyzed through a principle of interrelationships. The work of movie directors, who tried to realize sculptures and installations, proves similar phenomena of hybridization. When cinema leaves the theatre for an exhibition, it is also to find again, with the updating of new plastic forms, the secular data of its screening. With its transfer towards the sculpture the cinematographic art acquires the new expression of its personal history. Knowing this, the movement of cinema towards sculpture must also be questioned in the light of a principle of survival. By pretending to a-mortalize the beings that it shoots, the cinema find in sculpture a means to nurture its macabre labour. Besides, this display of death undergoes a very identifiable formal process : the inversion. We may then identify this plastic gesture with the metonymical figure of a burying. Thus, both cinema and sculpture seem to join in a funeral system of art

With the start of the age of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) two challenges face theoreticians and computational physicists. The first is about understanding theories beyond the Standard Model and producing verifiable predictions that can be tested against what the LHC and subsequent machines would produce. The second is to improve computational methods so that the new experimental precision is matched by a theoretical one. But this improvement is also crucial for the detection of potential deviations from Standard Model predictions and possibly also finding the elusive Higgs. This work tries to address problems in both areas. In the first part we study the effects of adding tension in considering a black-hole on a brane. Such black-holes are predicted by some models as potential phenomena at the LHC. We calculate the effects of adding tension on observable quantities of black-holes, namely, quasinormal mode frequencies and Hawking radiation, and we show how this improves predictions. In the second part we investigate the computational problem of extending the Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) method to 1-loop level. The BCFW has been successfully used in recent years to compute scattering amplitudes at tree-level by suitably complex-shifting external momenta and reducing diagrams to simpler ones. In our investigation we establish that the BCFW can be extended to 1-loop, which means that 1-loop integrands can be treated as trees and can be broken down further into even simpler trees using the BCFW. We explicitly look at the effects of the shift for the lowest three n-point cases, but also demonstrate how the result extends to arbitrary n.

Diabetic nephropathy accounts for a major portion of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. It is composed of glomerulopathy and tubulopathy. Unfortunately, Most previous studies were focused on glomerulopathy. Thus, our laboratory has been studying the roles of renal tubules (esp. the proximal tubule which constitutes the majority of renal parenchyma) in diabetic nephropathy. Hyperglycemia and advanced glycation end- product (AGE) are important in diabetic nephropathy. Moreover, our laboratory had recently shown that ketone body may stimulate high glucose in many ways and thereby may also play some roles in diabetic nephropathy. The signal transduction pathways in diabetic nephropathy may include protein kinase C (PKC), prostaglandins, nitric oxide (NO) and oxidative stress. However, the roles of transcription factors in diabetic nephropathy is still undefined except for the possWe found that all three maneuvers (high glucose, AGE and ketone body) inhibited cellular mitogenesis in the LLC-PK1 cells (at 72 hours) which were preceded by the activation of NF-kB at 1-4 hours (by electrophoretic mobility shift assay ; EMSA). The activation of NF-kB occurred concomitantly with the suppression of I-kB. Additionally, NF-kB activation was inhibited by PDTC (10-50 mM) but not by the pretreatment of Bis-indolaleimide (a specific PKC inhibitor) which suggets that NF-kB was not activated by PKCTo further elucidate the roles of NF-kB activation in high glucose, AGE and ketone body-induced inhibition of cellular mitogenesis and the induction of NO. We studied the effects of NF-kB decoy and antioxidants (including captopril which is an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor as well as an antioxidant) on the above results. We found that NF-kB decoy specifically inhibited NF-kB activation induced by all three maneuvers at 4 hours. Antioxidants (captopril, N-acetylcysteine and Vitamin E) also had simiWe conclude that high glucose, AGE and ketone body activate NF-kB in the LLC-PK1 cells. NF-kB (but not oxidative stress per se) mediates the production of NO (but not iNOS protein per se). Additionally, NF-kB (but not NO production per se) also mediates the inhibition of cellular mitogenesis by the above three maneuvers. Thus, NF-kB may be an important signal transduction pathway in diabetic tubulopathy.

In the present study, ethanol extract of fruit body of Antrodia cinnamomea (EEAC) was applied for the investigation using murine model. When the experimental mice treat 8 mg/kg of b.w. level, the primary tumor was significantly suppressed and the concentration of metalloproteinases (MMP)-9 and MMP-2 in serum were also reduced. The results of gelatin zymography assay showed that EEAC at 8 mg/kg of b.w. may suppress the activity of MMP-9 in lung tissue. When the animals were treated with EEAC at 8 or 80 mg/kg of b.w., respectively the clinical prognostic indicator such TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 were keep of a low concentration level. However, no significant variation VEGF in serum was detected in the treated mice. In the present study show that may significantly reduce the metastasis of lung cancer in the experimental mice. It is concluded that EEAC may effectively mediate the factors for the promotion of metastasis of cancer cells and reduce the growth of primary tumor. Results obtained from the present study may suggest that EEAC may possess a potentiality for cancer chemotherapeutic activity.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. The hallmark of DN is cellular hyperplasia, hypertrophy, expansion of extracellular matrix and deranged growth factors (e.g. transforming growth factor-β, TGF-β and its downstream smads) and cell cycle regulators (e.g.p21Waf1and p27Kip1) in the gomeruli and renal tubules. Hypertrophy consists of increased synthesis and/or decreased degradation of protein. Ubiquitination and proteasome pathway is one of the important mechanisms for protein degradation (e.g.Smad, p21Waf1and p27Kip1). But the role of protein ubiquitination in DN remains unknown. High glucose and advanced glycation end-product(AGE) have been proposed to be essential factors in DN. For example, we had shown that high glucose decreased cellular mitogenesis while increasing cellular hypertrophy and collage synthesis by inducing TGF-β1 protein expression in the proximal tubule-like LLC-PK1 cells. Apart from patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, serum ketone body (e.g.β- hydroxybutyrate) level is also often elevated in patients with type I or type II diabetes mellitus. However, the effects of ketone body on proximal tubule is still unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of -hydroxybutyrate in LLC-PK1 cells in terms of cellular growth. We found that high glucose (500mg/dl) and β-hydroxybutyrate (10mM) decreased cellular proliferation in LLC-PK1 cells at 48 h. Meanwhile, -hydroxybutyrate also increased TGF-β, p21Waf1 and p27Kip1 transcriptional activity at 18-24 h. Interestingly, dominant negative Smad2 and Smad3 plasmids reversed -hydroxy- butyrate—inhibited cellular proliferation. They also reversed β-hydroxy- butyrate—induced p21Waf1 and p27Kip1 protein expression and TGF-β transcriptional activity. Additionally, β-hydroxybutyrate decreased p27Kip1 ubiquitination. In conclusion, β-hydroxybutyrate—inhibited cellular proliferation by inducing TGF-β/Smad2/3, p21Waf1 and p27Kip1 in LLC-PK1 cells. Moreover, β-hydroxybutyrate-induced p27Kip1 protein expression was accompanied by decreased p27Kip1 ubiquitination .

The purpose of this study was to investigate those aspects of resilient schools which are particularly beneficial for schools within rural communities in Mpumalanga. The study was done in two phases: a literature review focussing on the culture of learning of resilient schools and an empirical investigation focussing on the culture of learning of resilient schools within rural communities in Mpumalanga. Two secondary schools were selected according to criteria of resiliency. The study involved qualitative approaches, in-depth observations and interviews with key informants: principals, teachers, learners and members of the school governing bodies.
The data demonstrate that there is no distinctive aspect of the culture of learning of resilient schools because all aspects are interrelated and interdependent. This study discovered that the most effective aspect, which benefits the culture of teaching and learning in resilient schools, was the involvement of all stakeholders.Educational Management
