The stag beetle genus Lucanus Scopoli, 1763 (Coleoptera: Lucanidae, Lucaninae, Lucanini) consists of 118 species (without subspecies), of which 64 species known from China. Two new species, Lucanus niu sp. n. and Lucanus zenghuae sp. n., are described from Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Diagnostic characters of the two new species are illustrated and compared with closely related congeners.

A new stag beetle fossil is described from the Yixian Formation in northeastern China. A new genus is established based on this well-preserved specimen. Prolucanus beipiaoensis gen. et sp. nov. is firmly placed in the extant lucanid subfamily Lucaninae based on its broad prosternal process and geniculate antennae. Our discovery represents the first fossil record of Lucaninae from the Late Mesozoic of China and the oldest reliable record belonging to the subfamily. It was Levi's search for the “indistinto originario” ( Paura della libertà 19), the primordial magma where darkness and light are still fused, that attracted him to the land of interior Lucania; an area where instinct and reason, magic and science, nature and spirit were still one. And it perhaps was the same search that attracted him later on to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. But Lucania was to remain the most congenial place to Levi's needs. In this essay I have a twofold purpose: to examine one aspect of this “indistinto originario,” the feminine, and Levi's complex relation with woman

The arrangement of the mitogenome in these two lucanid beetles was the same as that in the inferred ancestral insect, and the nucleotide composition was highly biased towards A + T as in other lucanids. Erosive burning in solid rocket motor is a phenomenon that occurs at the beginning of the motor operation and represents an increase in the burning rate in the motor compared to the designed rate. During development of the rocket motor, this problem should be solved constructively, if possible, by changing the shape and dimensions of the propellant grain and motor elements.
