Abstract:
A fictional book with five short stories that address the main pandemics in the world. The first story takes place in Ancient Greece, in 428 BC at the time of the Peloponnesian War. Tavros, the main character flees the plague by traveling to Gaul and discovers a mysterious water spring near the village of the Parisii. In AD 166, when Rome, is devasted by the plague, Marcus Aurelius sends out soldiers to the North. One of them, Lucius, arrives in the region of Lutecia and finds the same fountain that Tavros had been to. The water from this spring gives him strength to escape from the persecution of Christians and Jews. In his old age, Lucius becomes a Church elder and writes letters. One of them was read, many centuries later, by a Franciscan Parisian monk during the Middle Ages, who decides to pilgrimage to Jerusalem but is surprised by the Black Death. Back home, he is saved by the water spring, builds an orphanage and has his life converted into a book - which is red by a young journalist who takes the ship Demerara with his fiancée to Brazil in order to avoid the World War I, the Spanish flu and some Russian spies. The last story is about a Brazilian professor, called Lucius Felipe who, in 2019, travels to Paris to develop his postdoctoral studies. Unfortunately he has to return to Brazil due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But not before having visited Lutetia’s fountain and felt its power and the memories it holds.

Chokroverty, Sudhansu, and Luigi Ferini-Strambi, eds. Oxford Textbook of Sleep Disorders. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199682003.001.0001.

Abstract:
The 20th century witnessed a spectacular progress in uncovering the mysteries of sleep which continues in this 21st century. Concomitantly there is increased awareness about the importance of sleep and its disorders. Gaps, however, remain in many areas, particularly in the neurological aspects of sleep medicine, which is ironic as sleep is of the brain, by the brain, and for the brain. Despite availability of two to three neurologically oriented short books, there is a need for a new text covering the topic in a succinct and lucid manner, emphasizing the practical aspects of sleep neurology. This monograph is basically a clinical compendium but also provides an underlying basic science and technical background. The book should be useful to both the beginners and those advanced in the field, and is primarily directed at neurologists as well as internists, general practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, dentists, intensivists, neuroscientists, and those interested in advancing their knowledge in sleep and its disorders (eg, technologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals). To paraphrase Robert Frost, we still have “miles to go” before we sleep.

Toje, Asle, ed. Will China's Rise Be Peaceful? Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190675387.001.0001.

Abstract:
The rise of China will undoubtedly be one of the great spectacles of the twenty-first century. More than a dramatic symbol of the redistribution of global wealth, the event has marked the end of the unipolar international system and the arrival of a new era in world politics. How the security, stability, and legitimacy built upon foundations that are suddenly shifting, adapting to this new reality is the subject of Will China’s Rise be Peaceful? Bringing together the work of seasoned experts and younger scholars, this volume offers an inclusive examination of the effects of historical patterns—whether interrupted or intact—by the rise of China. The contributors show how strategies among the major powers are guided by existing international rules and expectations as well as by the realities created by an increasingly powerful China. While China has sought to signal its nonrevisionist intent, its extraordinary economic growth and active diplomacy have in a short time span transformed global and East Asian politics. This has caused constant readjustments as the other key actors have responded to the changing incentives provided by Chinese policies. This book explores these continuities and discontinuities in five areas: theory, history, domestic politics, regional politics, and great power politics. Equally grounded in theory and extensive empirical research, this timely volume offers a remarkably lucid description and interpretation of our changing international relations. In both its approach and its conclusions, it will serve as a model for the study of China in a new era.
