Full textBantu languages commonly signal tense, aspect, mood, polarity, and clause-type distinctions with tonal as well as segmental cues. The inflectional tonal melodies on verbs may be viewed as underlyingly floating H tones (henceforth `melodic Hs') contributed by the morpho-syntax that are assigned by rule to different positions within the verb. Along with a small set of construction specific tonal adjustment rules, the number and position of melodic Hs distinguish one tonal melody from another.
The present dissertation makes two contributions to the study of the special role that tone plays in Bantu verbal morpho-syntax. First, it contributes extensive novel documentation of the verbal tone system of Idakho: a variety of the Luhya cluster of Bantu languages spoken near Lake Victoria in western Kenya and eastern Uganda. Second, I show how aspects of the Idakho system and that of other Luhya varieties like it have contributed to the development of rich diversity within the verbal tone systems of Luhya.
Part I comprises the descriptive component of the dissertation and emphasizes the impact of several factors known to influence verb tone in Bantu. Because many language consultants contributed to the project, the dissertation makes note of variation within and across speakers of Idakho. In Part II, I demonstrate the role that a preference for prosodically well-cued morphological boundaries has played in two striking tonal developments within the Luhya macrolanguage: the loss of a lexical tonal contrast reconstructed to Proto-Bantu and the introduction of tonal melodies in constructions for which there is no historical precedence for tonal inflection.

Full textThe aim of this research is to provide some ground work in the study of Luhyia socio-linguistics. A fair amount of research on indigenous forms of English has been conducted in South Africa as well as West Africa. According to Schmied (1991), Nigeria is covered by several books and articles on English, but other areas of Africa are relatively blank. Schmied himself has produced primary work on English in East Africa. Studies of language maintenance and language shift have been undertaken by eminent scholars such as Brenzinger (1992), Eastman (1990, 1992). However, it is Myers-Scotton's pioneering research on code-switching among the Luhyia speakers undertaken in the 1980s that proyided the initial inspiration and further foundation for this thesis. An attempt is made here to build on Myers-Scotton's insightful observations on code-switching among Luhyia speakers. In addition this thesis explores the type of English in use among the Luhyia, and its effects on the indigenous language with which it has come into contact.

Full textThis work develops the strategic plan of the Province of Luya, a province with a high potential to develop, due to the fact that it has a great variety of resources, which could be better exploited through the Free Trade Agreements to contribute to the dynamism of the national economy. The methodology used to formulate this strategic plan has been based on the Sequential Model of the Strategic Process developed by Professor Fernando D´Alessio. To this end, bibliographic information based on reliable sources was reviewed, from which the current situation of the region could be known. After that, an external and internal analysis was carried out to establish short and long term objectives which will be carried out carried out through the formulation, implementation and evaluation of strategies, in order to achieve the desired vision. In this sense, by 2028 the Province of Luya will be a leading local government applying good practices in public management, which will allow promoting its main economic activities, self-sustaining and generating opportunities; ensuring that the use of resources has a positive impact on the environment and that it has an impact on a better quality of life for citizens. The achievement of the vision will depend on the fulfillment of the short and long-term objectives, as well as the Balance Scorecard, which will monitor compliance and measure the results of the short-term objectives. Through the application of this strategic plan, the Province of Luya will be consolidated as a fundamental actor of the national and global economy.

Full textThere is a global problem with the final disposal of solid waste, due to the negative impacts it generates, such as environmental, economic, social and health damages; and our country is not exempt from this, because there is a need to cover 90% of districts in Peru that do not have infraestructures for the final disposal of waste. The sanitary landfill is a technique for the final disposal of solid waste on the ground, which requires the use of engineering principles to confine it in a certain area, after studing, implementation control and operation mechanisms, with the aim of preventing risks in the health and environmental damage. In the 70s, Japan developed a technology for the elimination of solid waste in semi-aerobic landfills, called the Fukuoka method, being an alternative solution for the final disposal of solid waste. The Fukuoka method was implemented for the first time in Peru, in the construction of the Mariscal Castilla - Alto Utcubamba Landfill, being a significant change technology for landfills; because it reduces moisture in the landfill layers, improves leachate water quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, reduces the amount of hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds, and early stabilization; in addition to having simple construction processes, easy to apply, they require common use machinery and equipment and are within the framework of current Peruvian regulations, which are detailed in the development of this thesis.

Full textThis research study addresses the ability to provide iron supplementation service to children from 6 to less than 36 months of age, whose distribution and consumption has a direct influence on the prevalence of anemia, currently considered a serious health problem. public that affects a large part of the country's population, with an average of 43.5% nationally and 45.1% in the department of Amazonas. The objective is to analyze the coverage of the iron supplementation service for children from 6 to less than 36 months in Pisuquia district, Luya province, department of Amazonas, within the framework of the Nutritional Articulated Program. From this, three specific objectives are proposed: First, it seeks to evaluate the availability of iron supplements in health facilities of the first level of care. Second, it seeks to analyze the delivery system of iron supplements to beneficiaries. Third, it seeks to evaluate the interest of the beneficiaries regarding iron supplementation. From what has been analyzed, the limiting factors for not achieving adequate coverage of the iron supplementation service for children from 6 to less than 36 months, are: i) low availability of iron supplements in health facilities, ii) weak system of iron supplements delivery to beneficiaries, and iii) little interest of the beneficiaries regarding iron supplementation. In this regard, a proposal is presented to address the direct causes that affect the entire value chain of the service, establishing goals in the coverage of iron supplementation that contribute to the reduction of anemia.
