Abstract:
It has long been almost taken for granted that Luke-Acts is a historical work. Recently, however, C. H. Talbert has argued that Luke-Acts is biography rather than history, thereby re-opening the question of the genre of Luke-Acts. In what follows I will discuss one feature of Luke-Acts which does not support the contention that it is biography. I will argue that the preface of Luke-Acts resembles the prefaces of histories more than those of biographies or any other ancient prose writings. And I will further attempt to specify what historical prefaces it most resembles, and thus what sort of historian, on the evidence of the preface, the author of Luke-Acts was Comparison of prefaces cannot by itself settle the question of the genre of Luke-Acts, but it may make an important contribution. It is often true (and certainly true in the case of Luke-Acts) that the author speaks most directly in his preface. Because of this the preface may provide the best indication of the writer's own understanding of what he is doing, which is an important consideration in addressing the question of genre.

Abstract:
Far from indicating that “Luke” had to investigate all the traditions before he could write them up as an historian, παρηκολουθηκότι in Luke 1:3 means almost the opposite. Luke is already credentialed to write because, having entered into Christian tradition as tradent and interpreter from some time in the past, he is fully qualified to write “as one who has a thoroughly informed familiarity with all the events from the top.” This study represents the most comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the possible meanings of παρακολουθέω in the classical and Greco-Roman periods based on an extensive sweep of all the many senses and referents in lsj and bdag. Τhe perfect participle placards one trained in a tradition and not the judicious labors of an historian’s research.

Abstract:
The Gospel of Luke reveals an important aspect, namely, the combination of history and eschatology. Therefore, many scholars have discussed whether Luke is more a historian rather than a theologian or vice versa. In his historical and eschatological discourse, the evangelist talks about the Parousia. The coming of the Son of Man at the end of time is a certainty and people have to prepare for his arrival. In this paper I aim to describe the attitude of the members of Lucan communities towards the second coming of the Son of Man having Luke 17 as a starting point. Firstly, I intend to evaluate the text of Luke 17:20-37 from a literary point of view, followed by a synoptic comparison to Matthew 24:36-44 in order to better underline Luke’s theological orientation. The final step involves a series of theological (eschatological) insights: the unexpected second arrival of Christ and the necessity of an orientation towards everlasting life. All of the images within the text of Luke 17:20-37 have an exhortatory intent: faith must always remain strong. And Christians should be faithful and vigilant at all times. This vigilance and the orientation towards the everlasting realities are important paths to salvation.

Abstract:
The death of Colin Hemer in 1987 has deprived the fellowship of New Testament scholars of one who, like his late mentor F. F. Bruce, was able to bring to bear on the study of the text of the New Testament the insights and discipline of one trained in the Classics. Hemer's posthumously published The Book of Acts in the Setting of Hellenistic History is an attempt on a large scale to argue the case for the historicity of Acts with respect to attention to matters of detail, and, as a consequence, the trustworthiness of its author. Luke the historian, contends Hemer, deserves to be judged according to the historiographical conventions of his day, the conventions of a venerable historiographical heritage whose great exemplar in the Hellenistic era was Polybius. Hemer's bringing of a vast collection of epigraphical and archaeological evidence to bear on the question of Lukan historicity should shake the presuppositions and conclusions of the sceptical and help NT scholars to appreciate both Lukan accuracy and Acts' ‘topicality’.

Abstract:
Στάσις is an important theme in Luke-Acts, but one that remains understudied. Many Lukan scholars equate στάσις with Roman seditio or treason, thereby overlooking the rich philosophical reflection on στάσις in Greek political thought. In this article, I analyse Luke's use of the concept of στάσις in his depiction of Jesus’ trial against the background of Thucydides’ model of στάσις in book 3 of his history. Thucydides’ reflections on στάσις were highly influential for later historians such as Josephus, and I argue that Luke too employs the common topos of στάσις as a violent internal conflict and not an act of rebellion or insurrection to reveal how the conflict between Jesus and his opponents is symptomatic of a deeper inversion of social bonds and language within a community. He does this, I argue, to set the stage for the story of Acts where στάσεις erupt throughout the Empire wherever the gospel is preached.

Abstract:
This article argues that historians of literacy, including Carl Kaestle, Harvey Graff, Suzanne de Castell, and Allan Luke, have not taken into account America's Hispanic literacy legacy. Drawing examples from historical accounts, diaries, and Spanish civil law, the author illustrates the depth and breadth of Hispanic contributions to American literacy. The article sharply contrasts the (relatively recent) image of “literacy deficient” Hispanic Americans with the rich legacy of their forebearers, who brought a new world of literacy to early America.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how understandings of history in diverse texts of the Graeco-Roman period illuminate Lukan eschatology. Two strands of Lukan scholarship have contributed to an enduring tendency to underestimate the centrality of eschatology to Luke/Acts. Hans Conzelmann's thesis, that Luke focused on history rather than eschatology as a response to the parousia's delay, has dominated Lukan scholarship since the mid-twentieth century, with concomitant assumptions about Luke's politics and understanding of suffering. Recent Lukan scholarship has centred instead on genre and rhetoric, examining Luke/Acts predominantly in relation to ancient texts deemed the same genre while overlooking themes (including those of an eschatological character) that these texts do not share. This thesis offers a fresh approach. It illuminates the inherent connections between Luke's understanding of history and its end, and demonstrates significant ways in which Luke's eschatological consciousness shapes key themes of his account. By extending comparisons to a wider range of texts, this study overcomes two clear methodological shortfalls in current research: limiting comparisons of key themes to texts of similar genre, and separating non-Jewish from Jewish texts. Having established the need for a new examination of Luke's eschatology in Chapter 1, in Chapter 2 I set out the study's method of comparing diverse texts on themes that cut across genres. Chapters 3 to 6 then consider each key text and Luke/Acts in relation to a different aspect of their writers' conceptions of history: the direction and shape of history; determinism and divine guidance; human culpability and freedom; and the present and the end of history. The analysis shows that in every aspect of history examined, Luke/Acts shares significant features of the texts with which, because they do not share its genre, it is not normally compared. Setting Luke/Acts in conversation with a broader range of texts highlights Luke's periodised, teleological view of history and provides a nuanced picture of Luke's understanding of divine and human agency, all of which is affected in fundamental ways by his portrayal of the present time already within the final period of history. As a result, this study not only clarifies Lukan eschatology, but reaffirms the importance of eschatology for Lukan politics and theodicy.

Abstract:
The quest for the historical Jesus can be advanced by a consideration of disagreement scenarios recorded in the gospels. Such “conflicts” afford the opportunity not only to analyse the positions of the protagonists, but by comparing them, to better appreciate their relative stances. ¶ One area of disagreement that has remained largely unexplored is that between Jesus and the Pharisees over the “kingdom of God”. Indeed, “kingdom of God” formed the very foundation of Jesus’ preaching and thus ought to be the place where fundamental disagreements are to be found. As Luke 17:20-21 represents the only passage in the Gospels where the Pharisees show any interest in the kingdom of God, it forms the central hub of the thesis around which an account of the disparate beliefs of Jesus and the Pharisees on the kingdom of God is constructed. ¶ The main thesis is this. Luke 17:20-21 can best be explained, at the level of the Pharisees and Jesus, as betraying a fundamental disagreement, not in the identity of the kingdom of God, which they both regarded as primarily the Divine Royal Presence, i.e. God himself as king, but in the location of that kingdom. The Pharisees located the kingdom in the here-and-now, Jesus located it in heaven. Conversely, at later stages in the formation of the pericope, the pre-Lukan community identified the kingdom as the Holy Spirit located in individuals with faith in Jesus and the redactor identified the kingdom as Jesus, located both in the Historical Jesus and the Jesus now in heaven. ¶ Chapter 1, after the usual preliminary remarks, presents an analysis of Luke 17:20-21 as a chreia, a literary form ideally suited as the basis on which to compare the beliefs of the Pharisees and Jesus. The work of three scholars vital to the development of the main thesis is then reviewed and evaluated. By way of background, a portrait of the Pharisees is then presented, highlighting in particular, issues that will be of importance in later chapters. Finally, a section on the Aramaic Targums suggests that some targum traditions may be traced back prior to AD 70 and that these reflect the influence and beliefs of first century Palestinian Pharisees. ¶ Chapters 2 and 3 are a consideration of every instance of the explicit mention of God as king (or his kingship) and the Divine Kingdom respectively, in contemporary and earlier Jewish Palestinian literature and in Luke-Acts. A model of the kingdom of God is developed in these chapters that will be applied to Luke 17:20-21 in the next chapter. ¶ Chapter 4 presents a detailed exegesis of Luke 17:20-21, taking into account scholarship on the pericope since the last monograph (an unpublished dissertation of 1962) on the chreia. It offers a composition history of the pericope and measures previous exegesis against the view of the kingdom of God as developed in chapters 2 and 3. ¶ Chapter 5 presents a summary of the work that relates directly to Luke 17:20-21, some implications arising from the findings and, several possible avenues for future research.

Lohi, T. (Tuomas). Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2003. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514271572.

Abstract:
Abstract This work is concerned with the attitudes of the principal newspapers in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat, Hufvudstadsbladet, Maakansa, Suomen Sosialidemokraatti, Uusi Suomi and Vapaa Sana, towards Urho Kekkonen during the time leading up to his presidency, in 1944-1956. The account proceeds chronologically, employing principally a qualitative historical method, although with some quantitative aspects. A total of 1284 articles or news items concerned with Kekkonen were published in these leading newspapers during the period in question, the vast majority, 87.5%, in 1950-1956. Maakansa was the most active paper in writing about Kekkonen, and gained a position as his mouthpiece early in his career, whereas Hufvudstadsbladet was more passive in its view of him and Suomen Sosialidemokraatti and Uusi Suomi were the most critical. All in all, however, the majority of the leading newspapers tended for the most part to be critical of him during this period, although he gained some recognition even amongst his opponents, who admitted that he had been a forceful and effective personality as Minister of Justice, Speaker of Parliament and Prime Minister. The criticism was directed mainly at his arbitrary behaviour in foreign affairs and his alleged ties with the communists. The speech that he had made in parliament in March 1940, opposing the peace treaty that ended the Winter War, was the weapon most frequently used against him, whereas the question of war crimes did not arouse much debate regarding him in the columns of the press, nor did the negotiations over the Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Kekkonen did not usually intervene in any way in the discussions concerning him in the press during the 1940's, but as Prime Minister he reacted strongly to the growing criticism, usually venting his feelings through articles in Suomen Kuvalehti or Kyntäjä, or through private correspondence. He particularly despised the writings of Suomen Sosialidemokraatti and its columnist "Jahvetti", and was also annoyed at the attitudes of the Uusi Suomi columnist "Timo"

Abstract:
This thesis will document the process of rehearsing and performing a one-woman show based on the life of the poet Emily Dickinson. The script is a cutting of the full-length play, The Belle of Amherst, written in 1976 by William Luce. This self-directed project will document the process that all actors use when developing a role. The first part of developing a role includes historical research, character analysis, and script analysis. The second phase is the rehearsal process. This includes developing the physical and vocal qualities of the character and staging the action of the play. Because this performance is self-directed and self-produced, this thesis will also discuss production aspects that a director or producer usually addresses: set design, lighting, sound design, costuming, publicity, and dramaturgy. A portion of the thesis is also devoted to analyzing the cuts made to the script, a task normally reserved for a playwright. A one-person show has some unique challenges for a performer. These challenges involve making choices about how to interact with the audience, how to transition from scene to scene, and how to incorporate imaginary characters into a one-sided conversation. The question of how to portray an historical figure in an accurate and entertaining way will also be discussed.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter contains some final reflections on history-writing as well as on the gospel writers themselves. It notes that the conception of history engendered in part by Mark and Luke constitutes a coherent framework within which to perceive the elements of time and history and, moreover, to demythologize the future. The chapter also dwells on the anonymity of Luke and Mark, especially in comparison to the more well-known Greco-Roman historians, yet it argues that their very anonymity as writers, however, may prove to have been their greatest strength: without a care for either the opportunities or the pitfalls that haunt the mainstream historian in his quest for fame and fortune, Mark and Luke managed to conceptualize narratives of “good news.”

Abstract:
Many of the components on a gas turbine are subject to fouling and degradation over time due to debris buildup. For example, axial compressors are susceptible to degradation as a result of debris buildup on compressor blades. Similarly, air cooled lube oil heat exchangers incur degradation as a result of debris buildup in the cooling air passageways. In this paper, we develop a method for estimating the degradation rate of a given gas turbine component that experiences recoverable degradation due to normal operation over time. We then establish an economic maintenance scheduling model which utilizes the derived rate and user input economic factors to provide a locally optimal maintenance schedule with minimized operator costs. The rate estimation method makes use of statistical methods combined with historical data to give an algorithm with which a performance loss rate can be extracted from noisy data measurements. The economic maintenance schedule is then derived by minimizing the cost model in user specified intervals and the final schedule results as a combination of the locally optimized schedules. The goal of the combination of algorithms is to maximize component output and efficiency, while minimizing maintenance costs. The rate estimation method is validated by simulation where the underlying noisy data measurements come from a known probability distribution. Then, an example schedule optimization is provided to validate the economic optimization model and show the efficacy of the combined methods.
