Abstract The uses of enslaved labor outside the context of staple crop production become evident through an examination of colonial Somerset County, the southernmost Maryland county on the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore. By the early eighteenth century, conditions in Somerset amounted to something of a paradox. The county’s planters were thoroughly embedded in the larger Chesapeake plantation society and replicated, insofar as they were able, the features of that society, including the use of slave labor and cultivation of tobacco. Yet poor soil conditions pushed residents to the edges of the

A clinical study was performed in order to determine if healthy test subjects can differentiate between adjacent and separated pairs of vertebrae in the lumbar spine. The variable of interest was number of correctly specied pairs of vertebrae. The test subjects were evaluated in terms of sensitivity and specicity of this test. Bootstrap resampling was applied in the data analysis. The results clearly indicated that the test subjects in this study were able to successfully determine whether a pair of adjacent or separated vertebrae was tested during the procedure.

Chapter 1 explores the origins of the Pacific Northwest timber industry in the early twentieth century, focusing on how employers’ efforts to control and contain labor radicalism shaped the demography and living circumstances of workers. Lumbermen believed that the best way to mollify organized labor was to recruit married men and families to work in their lumber camps and sawmills, and, in order to recruit families, the lumbermen constructed a vast network of company towns that significantly shaped the way people from timber-working communities understood and used the surrounding forests.

On exposure of the skin area over the contractional muscle to coherent radiation, the change of the speckle field intensity fluctuations occurs. The dynamics of this process is dictated by the dynamics of the object under study. So, making investigations on the spectral properties of the reflected scattered laser radiation, we can judge about the character of changing the skin surface itself.

Abstract:
Introduction: Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have an unnatural cognitive loss of aging and have an increased chance of developing Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Another factor that also increases this risk is the chronic inflammation caused by obesity, described by a body fat percentage (BF%) above healthy values. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether BF% in older adults with MCI correlates with AD biomarkers, such as total TAU protein and beta-amyloid. Methods: Twenty-one older adults with MCI were evaluated, 11 men and 10 women with a mean age of 66.3 (standard deviat

Abstract:
Introduction: Little is known about the impact of enzyme-inducing antiseizure drugs (EI-ASD) on the reduction of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in men with epilepsy (MWE). Objectives: To evaluate the BMD in MWE exposed to EI-ASDs (phenytoin, carbamazepine and phenobarbital) and its relationship with the duration of epilepsy. Methods: We evaluated BMD from 74 consecutive MWE (median age (range), 52.5 (25- 74) years) exposed to previous or current EI-ASDs, followed at UNICAMP-Brazil. Individuals were split into two groups (young-group, 31 individuals [25-49 years]; older group, 43 subjects, [50-74 y

Abstract:
The study involved 15 men with movement disorders of central origin. We used percutaneous electrical stimulation of the spinal cord with the application of electrodes in the projection of the lumbar thickening, proprioceptive stimulation, and their combination. The data obtained showed the effectiveness of the combined course of percutaneous electrical stimulation of the spinal cord and proprioceptive stimulation on changes in the excitability of spinal locomotor neural networks. Key words: electrical stimulation, spinal cord, proprioceptive stimulation, rehabilitation, motor neuron.
