Abstract:
The tropical rain forest is facing increasing destruction and degradation and the ones in Africa much more so. The challenges include establishing the activities and factors which are contributing greatly to this situation. This study therefore critically assessed the influence of arable farming, lumbering and charcoal processing on deforestation in Rwamwanja refugee settlement camp in Kamwenge District, Uganda. This refugee camp is mainly habituated by refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The socio demographic data indicates that most of the refugees interviewed were male (94.3%), most of them (60.3 %) were married and ranged between 35 to 50 years old (62.1%). The results show that all these factors (arable farming, lumbering and charcoal burning) significantly contribute to the high rate of deforestation in this camp. However, the major contributor is lumbering (3.30) closely followed by Charcoal (3.26). The above two factors are mainly fueled by high income from lumbering and lack of energy for domestic use. The results further show that the increasing human population due to increasing number of refugees is resulting in increased settlement which in turn leads to increased deforestation as the above demands grow in this refugee settlement camp. The study recommends that there is need for a more detailed study to identify practical alternatives which would lead to effective protection of the forests around this refugee settlement. It is also further recommended that education and awareness on tree conservation for the local refugee communities becomes part of the settling in program including identifying other income generating activities and other sources of energy for the refugees.

Swiatlo, Jeffrey A. "Analysis of shear damage to southern pine lumber." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53188.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted as a second part in the shear damage research project at Virginia Tech. The objectives were to verify the results obtained by Gallagher (1984) in the first study under normal mill operations as well as develop a method to compare and evaluate the extent of shear damage in relation to other defects present in southern pine lumber. This was accomplished through two sawmill studies and two kiln cart surveys performed in different geographic locations. Visible indicators such as stump-pull that are used to determine shear damage extent are often misleading. Stump-pull, used as a scaling deduction for shear damage, does not fully determine the extent of shear damage present. Shatter is often present in greater amounts over the cross section of the butt of the log. The recommendation of six inches of butt trim that was determined to minimize value losses in the first study is supported by the results obtained in this research. A trim of six inches removed 94 to 99 percent of shear damage in this study. Defects other than shear damage were present on dried and surfaced lumber. Drying checks and splits along with shake were often observed on the lumber ends. These defects often extend further up on the lumber ends, past the seven inch simulated trim. Shake was determined to be the limiting defect. Shatter, in the absence of shake, was determined to be limiting. Kiln cart surveys conducted at mills that utilize a large percentage of sheared logs can be an inexpensive and effective tool to enable mill personnel to determine the extent of shear damage in relation to other defects present on lumber ends based on green trim already taken.

Hamilton, Evan D. "A linear programming and sampling approach to the cutting-order problem." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/32724.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of forest products, a cutting order is a list of dimension parts along with demanded quantities. The cutting-order problem is to minimize the total cost of filling the cutting order from a given lumber grade (or grades). Lumber of a given grade is supplied to the production line in a random sequence, and each board is cut in a way that maximizes the total value of dimension parts produced, based on a value (or price) specified for each dimension part. Hence, the problem boils down to specifying suitable dimension-part prices for each board to be cut. The method we propose is adapted from Gilmore and Gomory's linear programming approach to the cutting stock problem. The main differences are the use of a random sample to construct the linear program and the use of prices rather than cutting patterns to specify a solution. The primary result of this thesis is that the expected cost of filling an order under the proposed method is approximately equal to the minimum possible expected cost, in the sense that the ratio (expected cost divided by the minimum expected cost) approaches one as the size of the order (e.g., in board feet) and the size of the random sample grow large. A secondary result is a lower bound on the minimum possible expected cost. The actual minimum is usually impractical to calculate, but the lower bound can be used in computer simulations to provide an absolute standard against which to compare costs. It applies only to independent sequences, whereas the convergence property above applies to a large class of dependent sequences, called alpha-mixing sequences. Experimental results (in the form of computer simulations) suggest that the proposed method is capable of attaining nearly minimal expected costs in moderately large orders. The main drawbacks are that the method is computationally expensive and of questionable value in smaller orders.

Zhao, Juan. "Chinese state-owned enterprises: government departments or (lumbering) free marketeers? : a comparative study of strategic cognition." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/105354.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the last round of political and academic debates over the privatisation of State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Eastern Europe in the 1990s, the prominence of SOEs in China and concerns about state capitalism has triggered a new era of disputation amongst policy makers, economists and the public. Whether Chinese SOEs, are more political arms of the China government than free-market, profit-optimising entities is the main focus of western politicians. In contrast, academic discussion about SOEs has lagged practical interest. Empirical investigations into the direct relationship between firm ownership and cross-border actions and performance have given rise to mixed results. Competing explanations of these results have been based on contrary premises and support has been offered via varied explicit and implicit interpretations of institutional theory. However, where governments believe that profitable SOEs make the state stronger and as hybrid organizational forms of SOEs are increasingly prevalent in the 21st century, the validity of stereotypical assumptions about SOEs becomes questionable. The SOE debate is back at centre stage. Discussions and investigations of SOEs require an updated research perspective that is able to provide a new thread in its contribution to the academic debate, whilst also addressing the immediate practical concerns. In order to achieve this aim, rather than applying the traditional top-down approach, this research refer to the work of Weber and Glynn (2006), a micro-level strategic cognitive perspective is connected to the macro-level institutional context to develop a theoretical framework for this study of SOE strategic behaviour. Under this theoretical framework, this study attempts to understand how the management cognition (micro institution internal to the firm) responds to the macro institutional forces (external to the firm), affecting the firm’s strategic behaviour. In particular, managers’ convergent interpretations of strategy in the field is argued to reveal the salient institutional dynamics that prompt their collective strategic actions. Revealed collective (strategic) cognition is taken as a tool to tap the nature of the institutional dynamics that embody the imprint of government influence. This research uses the annual reports of 21 SOEs and POEs in the Chinese auto parts industry from the year 2011. Both the congruence and variance of the strategic cognitions of these two groups are identified. The findings of a predominantly convergent pattern of strategic thinking add to the explanatory power of institutional theory in firm strategic behaviour. In general, this research shows that under reinforced institutional pressure from the market and government policy, SOEs and POEs in the auto industry share similar strategic mindsets. Rather than being passive government policy-followers, SOEs are also predominantly driven by economic goals, even though SOEs still assume social stability roles and are disadvantaged in market competition through path dependence and organization culture. The identified convergent salient institution dynamics of SOEs and POEs strategy behaviour also reconcile and extend some of the competing arguments pertaining to the dynamics of SOEs’ and POEs’ activities. In particular, driving forces of Chinese firms’ internationalization are mainly domestic market forces (supply chain and factor market change) rather than government forces. Practically, the findings of this research address the pressing concerns in host country governments and decision makers in industries in relation to the internationalization ambitions and activities of Chinese SOEs (exemplified as the ‘Trump Hypothesis’). Methodologically, the integrated application of cognitive based techniques in the Chinese language provides a methodological contribution for future studies.

This chapter describes the messy and convoluted routes by which money and programs move through the global AIDS system. It takes the huge and frenetic organization of the global AIDS enterprise, and a commitment of significant time and money, to create the encounters between altruists and brokers. The United States is clearly the predominant funder, providing considerably more than the Global Fund, to which many countries contribute. Taken together, bilateral donors—governments that give aid directly to a recipient country—provide about three-quarters of total funding. The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), launched by President George W. Bush in 2003, provided for prevention, treatment with antiretroviral drugs, and mitigation of the effects of AIDS.

Abstract:
The paper provides a scientific insight into the history of human interaction with the environment. It focuses on the history of the Slavonian (oak) tree forests and lumbering that inspired the artists and their images. On the one hand, there is the well-known pre-war Vinkovci photographer, Franjo Körner (1901-1945), whose valuable collection of 97 glass plate negatives was accidentally discovered in 2020. Unlike Körner, another artist from Vinkovci used words to express his passion and love for the Slavonian (oak) tree forests. Being a professional forester, Ivan Kozarac wrote numerous poems, short stories and novels inspired by the Slavonian landscape. From the perspective of new cultural geography i.e. literature geography, the landscape is not simply a material artifact that reflects the culture in straightforward ways but is laden with symbolic meaning that needs to be decoded concerning the social and historical context.

Abstract:
Global warming is one of the most important topics in power generation field. Wood pellet is carbon neutral fuel and it is expected to reduce CO2 emission from fossil fuel. Recently in Japan, wood pellet is already utilized in many pulverized coal fired boilers in a limited range of a few percent. For the further CO2 emission reduction, high co-firing ratio of wood pellet is expected. The firing system of wood pellet is required to be separated from the coal firing system in the view point of technique, and it is desired to slightly modify the existing coal firing system from the view point of dissemination. IHI developed a wood pellet mill which equipped some devices to the coal mill. By modifying one coal mill in a commercial power plant to the pellet mill, grinding wood pellet was succeeded, and co-firing rate of 25 % was achieved. This paper shows the economic and technical evaluations of wood pellet utilization in coal fired power plant including the impact of lumbering to the forest.
