Abstract:
In this paper we demonstrate the existence of simultaneous lightness contrast in displays in which the target patches are both more luminant than their surrounds. These effects are not predicted by theories of lightness that assume that the highest luminance in a scene is perceived as white, and anchors all the other luminances. We show that the strength of double-increment illusions depends crucially on the luminance of both the surrounds and the target patches. Such luminance prerequisites were not met in previous studies, which explains why simultaneous contrast with incremental targets has

Introduction. Natural illumination calculations depend on the sky luminance distribution. The most often used diagram of sky luminance in handbooks and guidelines is the luminance distribution in the cloudy sky proposed by Moon and Spencer. This concept actually includes the tropical areas of Vietnam, where the overcast sky and clear sky does not typically occur. To improve the calculation of natural illumination, it is necessary to determine the luminance distribution in the real sky.

The surface-mode property of “blackness” is induced by simultaneous contrast with an adjacent, more luminant surround. As numerous studies have shown, the degree of blackness induced within an achromatic test field is a function of the relative luminance of the adjacent chromatic inducing field, but not of its hue. But in the converse case of chromatic test fields, susceptibility to blackening has been reported to vary with wavelength. The present study investigates this possibility, that some wavelengths are more susceptible. We also questioned whether “white” and “black” sensory components f

Much of what we know about human colour perception has come from psychophysical studies conducted in tightly-controlled laboratory settings. An enduring challenge, however, lies in extrapolating this knowledge to the noisy conditions that characterize our actual visual experience. Here we combine statistical models of visual perception with empirical data to explore how chromatic (hue/saturation) and achromatic (luminant) information underpins the detection and classification of stimuli in a complex forest environment. The data best support a simple linear model of stimulus detection as an add

It is widely presumed that throughout the primate visual pathway neurons encode the relative luminance of objects (at a given light adaptation level) using two classes of monotonic function, one positively and the other negatively sloped. We tested this hypothesis by recording from single neurons in areas V1 and V2 of alert, fixating macaque monkeys during presentation of a large, spatially uniform patch oscillating slowly in luminance and sur

It has long been held that luminance acts as a cue for depth perception. But varying the luminance of a stimulus inevitably alters its contrast with its background. Recent research shows that contrast is a depth cue. I have distinguished two kinds of contrast, external contrast, the contrast of a stimulus with its background, and internal contrast, the contrast within the stimulus. I compared the relative apparent depth of two stimuli (both directly and indirectly; stimuli were either sine-wave filled hemifields, sine-wave filled squares, or plain squares), as their luminances and internal con

The article proposes a new criterion for lighting quality that extends the existing UGR. The proposed criterion is tested in an experiment on real lighting installations - Moscow metro stations. At metro stations, the spatial-angular distribution of luminance is measured using a camera that shoots in RAW format and a luminance meter. A luminance meter is used to normalize the image to absolute luminance values. In the experiment, observers evaluate the quality of station lighting and compare the results with the calculation of a new criterion. A high correlation of the results obtained by obse

Abstract In recent years, the market share of OLED screens has increased year by year. Compared with traditional LCD screens, the advantages of OLED screens with bright colors and lower power consumption are attributed to the fact that LCD needs a backlight LED as the light source, and the pixels of the OLED screen emit light by themselves, so the power consumption of OLED is reduced and the thickness becomes thinner. In addition to the above reasons, OLED has a special advantage, that is, OLED can be bent, so the use of OLED screens is becoming more and more popular, and has even exceeded LCD
