Abstract:
This paper presents an empirical analysis of the geopositioning precision of multiple image triangulation using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) images at the Chang’e-3(CE-3) landing site. Nine LROC NAC images are selected for comparative analysis of geopositioning precision. Rigorous sensor models of the images are established based on collinearity equations with interior and exterior orientation elements retrieved from the corresponding SPICE kernels. Rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) of each image are derived by least squares fitting using vast number of virtual control points generated according to rigorous sensor models. Experiments of different combinations of images are performed for comparisons. The results demonstrate that the plane coordinates can achieve a precision of 0.54 m to 2.54 m, with a height precision of 0.71 m to 8.16 m when only two images are used for three-dimensional triangulation. There is a general trend that the geopositioning precision, especially the height precision, is improved with the convergent angle of the two images increasing from several degrees to about 50°. However, the image matching precision should also be taken into consideration when choosing image pairs for triangulation. The precisions of using all the 9 images are 0.60 m, 0.50 m, 1.23 m in along-track, cross-track, and height directions, which are better than most combinations of two or more images. However, triangulation with selected fewer images could produce better precision than that using all the images.

Abstract. This paper presents a review of lunar topographic mapping in the two decades of the 21st century, including descriptions of lunar exploration missions, relevant payloads and data, mapping techniques, as well as global and regional mapping products. Various lunar photogrammetric mapping techniques such as construction of geometric models of lunar orbital images, block adjustments, shape from shading, co-registration of lunar orbital image and elevation data have been developed to process lunar orbital images and generate mapping products. Global topographic products at hectometer and decameter scales have been produced from orbital images and/or laser altimeter data. Regional topographic maps of the landing sites and other sites of interest have been generated at meter-scale using the sub-meter to meter resolution orbital images. Detailed local topographic products at centimeter to millimeter scales of the landing sites and rover traverse areas have been produced using descent images acquired by the landers and stereo images acquired by the rovers. These multiple-scale topographic mapping products have been extensively used to support various science applications, as well as engineering applications such as surface operations of the rovers.

Abstract:
Space exploration is brewing to be one of the most sought after fields in today’s world with each country pooling in resources and skilled minds to be one step ahead of the other. The core aspect of space exploration is exoplanet exploration, i.e., by sending unmanned rovers or manned spaceships to planets and celestial bodies within and beyond our solar system to determine habitable planets. Landscape inspection and traversal is the core feature of any planetary exploration mission. It is often a strenuous task to carry out a machine learning experiment on an extraterrestrial surface like the Moon. Consequent lunar explorations undertaken by various space agencies in the last four decades have helped to analyze the nature of the Lunar Terrain through satellite images. The motion of the rovers has traditionally been governed by the use of sensors that achieve obstacle avoidance. In this project we aim to detect craters on the lunar landscape which in turn will be used to determine soft landing sites on the lunar landscape for exploring the terrain, based on the classified lunar landscape images.

Abstract:
The research project describes the key mission and systems engineering trade-offs involved in the end-to-end design of an orbiting mission to the Moon, using a "Smaller, Faster, Cheaper" mission approach. This approach is extended to enable the design of a new payload - within the management, cost, schedule, and physical constraints - of the low cost lunar orbiter mission. The payload is designed to image the Moon's permanently dark regions that are believed to contain water ice. To determine the best cost reduction management and engineering approach, the principles for reducing space mission cost are examined and planetary missions are assessed in terms of cost and risk drivers. 'Interplanetary' trajectories and attaining orbit around another body are shown to be the major risk areas encountered by traditional planetary missions. In addition to this, programme management is highlighted as an emerging high risk area for smaller, faster cheaper planetary missions. The preliminary mission design, covering lunar transfer, spacecraft and ground station is described. A 400 kg, three-axis stabilised, lunar orbiter, capable of delivering 20 kg of payload into a low lunar polar orbit is designed. The ground segment comprises one (possibly two) low cost ground stations, linked via the Internet. Images, raw data and telemetry can also be accessed via the Internet. The design-to-launch timeframe spans three years and the total mission cost target of $20 Million is met. The spacecraft is compatible with a range of existing lunar payloads, but the prime mission requirement will be to return images of the Moon's permanently dark craters for the first time. In order to design a low cost payload for imaging the Moon's permanently dark regions, the areas likely to contain the water ice are first characterised. The best and worst case lighting conditions for imaging are then calculated for these regions. The amount of light reaching a crater floor is a function of the crater depth-diameter ratio, solar irradiance incidence angle and local topography. The limiting case is shown to be imaging under starlight illumination only, which is modelled and estimated between 5 to 10µW/m2 over the 350 to 900 nm spectral band. These ultra-low light level conditions have led to identification and evaluation of several solutions in terms of both signal-tonoise ratio performance and development within the constraints of the smaller, faster, cheaper programme. This is achieved using a charge coupled device (CCD) camera employing a commercial sensor and optics. Large format Charge Injection Devices and Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductors (Active Pixel Devices) were identified as promising emerging technologies. The baseline low light level imager solution is a CCD array operated in Time Delay Integration mode in order to provide optical images from areas within permanent shadow. An intensified CCD offers a back up solution. The research demonstrates that a low cost lunar mission is technically feasible and additionally, that it is possible to meet a specific (if modest) application target through `smaller, faster, cheaper' payload design. It provides an approach that meets key challenges of planetary exploration at very low cost that can potentially be applied to other near Earth targets.

Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology (SMART-1), represented European Space Agency (ESA) first mission to the moon. It fulfilled the goal of improving the scientific knowledge of earth’s natural satellite, while testing new technologies that had never been used in space exploration. Among the on board instruments of SMART-1 was the Advanced Moon micro-Imager Experiment (AMIE). It was an imaging equipment whose mission was to map the lunar surface providing state-of-the-art resolution. Containing six filters inside its visual scope AMIE allowed the study of the surface composition by multispectral imaging. This thesis aims at building a set of maps covering approximately all the Moon surface as it was mapped by the SMART-1 spacecraft, using the 31945 images captured by the AMIE instrument. During the Earth escape phase the instrument’s CCD was damaged by radiation, causing the accumulation of dark current and invalidating the laboratorial image calibration algorithm. The acquired dataset also suffered from scattered light that got beneath the CCD filters and reduced their contrast. In order to overcome this problem, a new calibration procedure was developed using the in-flight collected data and theoretical models, as well as a method to compensate for the reduced contrast in the filters. For building the lunar maps, the images were individually analysed and classified accordingly to their visual quality and grouped by their illumination conditions, allowing the creation of visually balanced maps. Image mosaicing and projection techniques were used to compensate the geometrical distortions and compose the calibrated images into a set of 88 maps of the Moon. Increasing the flexibility of the process, a comprehensive tool that allows the edition of the images in the mosaiced maps, as well as brightness and contrast correction and adjustment is also presented.

Abstract: Images as a way of getting to know-thinking the spatial senses in the city of Americana. We have proposed to fascinate/enchant the senses of students and teachers with the photographical language, with pinhole cameras (hand-made cameras produced by the students), as we walked the city borders, capturing images, producing images, blurring postcards. The photographers became the producers of their own images, questioning knowledge and moving thought. Experimentation and fabulation express the image strength of the way students and teachers see the urban space, finding new perspectives of the places, allowing them to create distinct senses

This research develops a comprehensive study about teachers imaginary of children in a public kindergarten school in São Luís / MA. For this, seeks to check the images present in the narratives, drawings, reports of childhood, and other manifestations of the teachers; understand childhood revealed by these images and to analyze what they suggest about the place reserved for this phase of life for researched group. The path taken to that weaving is given by comprehensive phenomenology, based on hermeneutics, the main theoretical is Gilbert Durand´s (1993, 2002, 2010) anthropology of the imaginary and support discussions on specific areas of the human sciences: Childhood Sociology, Anthropology of Children, Developmental Psychology and Pedagogy, performing a convergence of these theories to the understanding of the researched object. Images were collected from the questionnaires, conducting an interview, the representation of childhood through plastic images and narrative on such images. The subjects of this research were six (6) teachers at a public school of that city. We found that in the group studied appear imaginary elements that reveal a balance with regard to the symbolic representation of childhood, but in general, we find that there is a greater tendency to a daytime representation, with an antagonistic appreciation of child. The understanding of the images revealed attitudes of teachers towards the child in the social context, pointing a symbolic place for childhood in the imaginary of the group.

The object of study of this research project considers the concepts of image, body and place based on the analysis of three artistic experiences developed for this project in visual poetics and on the relationships established with artistic references. Serving as a basis for conceptual study, one of these experiences involves individual authorship, while the other two involve my participation in collective/group works. The concepts in analysis – image, body and place – reverberate in the productions Entremeios, Porões a-paralelos and Interfaces Digitais POA-VAL, Laboratório_1 in different ways due to the diverse manners in which they incorporate their constitutive elements: the place as a space of artistic experience as well as the artwork’s presentation space; the image projected on this place, and the body’s actions in this space of artistic experience and presentation. The artistic references discussed in this study deal with a few milestones in art as well as more contemporary works that put into practice this research project’s key concepts, always considered within the bounds of my artistic experiences. In relation to works by Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham, Jeffrey Shaw and the SCIArts Group, among others, points of approximation and distance have been established. Fundamental theoretical references for this study are the authors: Edmond Couchot, Philippe Dubois and Michel de Certeau.

The study of the dissertation presents has as purpose to understand the pratical discourse and (re)construction of a regional image of food, used by the owner of the two thematic restaurants, located in the region of Fortaleza, Ceará: Chica Sinhá and Lá na Roça. Especialized in sertão’s culinary, this firms shows us, in details of their compositions, a large field of simbolic relactions and productions, from them emerge and which help to build. This way, I back to look for the history, as a process full of cognitive staying and cognitive ruptures, searching to reflect about the way of social objetivation of the regional cusine ideia, adopt and reframe by the mentioned restaurants. Following a verified trend also in the other places of Brasil and the rest of the world, in Ceará, the adoption of tourism by the government (as a growing form of aceleration the local economic devoloping) and the expressions changings imposed to the modern urban food consumption (driven by industrialization and padronization of the gender food) they are in the midle of conceptions and padronization movements this type of peculiar cusine.
